SIR BOBBY WISHES PELE A HAPPY 80TH BIRTHDAY

Manchester United icon Sir Bobby Charlton has paid a personal tribute to Pele, his friend and fellow legend of world football, to celebrate the Brazilian’s 80th birthday today.

Although they never met at domestic level, the two were opponents as internationals with England and Brazil during the 1958, 1962 and 1970 World Cups, tournaments which were all won by Pele's side.

As global figures of the game, Sir Bobby and Pele have remained friends and a warm welcome has always been extended to the South American hero whenever he has visited Old Trafford.

Those visits memorably included one in April 1998 to officially open a new and improved Old Trafford Museum, to which he temporarily loaned his three World Cup winners' medals. Pele was also back at the Theatre of Dreams in 2012, with New York Cosmos, for Paul Scholes’s testimonial.

In a message to mark Pele’s 80th birthday, Sir Bobby said: “I have said it before and I will say it again, I sometimes feel as though football was invented for this magical player. A phenomenal footballer and one of the nicest people you could ever wish to meet. Happy 80th birthday, Pele – wishing you good health, happiness and many happy returns.”

Denis Law, another member of our esteemed United Trinity, has also wished Pele well and explained why the Brazilian was so revered as a player.

“Pele was an unbelievable footballer, he had style, grace, flair and made everything look so easy,” says the Scot. “The fact that he was only 17 when he played in a World Cup final speaks for itself.

“The precision in the way he played made him such a joy to watch. For all his football abilities, he is also a good man with a great presence. I would like to wish him a very happy 80th birthday and I’m glad he’s finally caught me up!”

Sir Bobby and Denis aren’t the only United legends who are fans of Pele. In a typically cultured quote, Eric Cantona has previously honoured the Brazilian by comparing his football to great art.

“An artist, in my eyes, is someone who can lighten up a dark room,” Cantona once said. “I have never and will never find the difference between the pass from Pele to Carlos Alberto in the final of the World Cup in 1970 and the poetry of the young Rimbaud. There is in each of these human manifestations an expression of beauty which touches us and gives us a feeling of eternity.”

Happy 80th birthday, Pele. We hope to see you soon!

Pele Diabadikan Menjadi Nama Baru Stadion Maracana
Bayu Baskoro - detikSport

Perubahan nama Stadion Maracana disetujui badan legislatif negara bagian Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, Selasa (9/3/2021). Stadion berkapasitas 78 ribu penonton itu bakal berubah namanya menjadi Estadio Edson Arantes do Nascimento - Rei Pele.

Legenda Sepakbola Pele Jalani Operasi Pengangkatan Tumor

"Teman-teman saya, terima kasih banyak atas pesan baiknya.

Brazilian legend Pele posts picture of him 'punching the air in celebration of every better day' as 80-year-old continues his recovery from latest health scare at Sao Paulo hospital

* Pele, 80, recently underwent an operation to remove a colon tumour
* The three-time World Cup winner was readmitted to hospital on Friday
* His daughter Kely Nascimento has said that he is already 'recovering well'

Brazilian legend Pele posted a picture on social media of him 'punching the air' to celebrate 'every better day' as the 80-year-old continued his recovery from his latest health scare.

On Friday, the three-time World Cup winner was readmitted to hospital just three days after leaving having previously undergone an operation to remove a colon tumour.

'As you can see, I'm punching the air in celebration of every better day,' Pele wrote on Instagram beside a photograph of him sitting in a hospital chair, watched by two medical staff.

Legend Pele pictured with two medical staff at the Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo

'A good mood is the best medicine and I have plenty of that. It couldn't be different,' he added Sunday.

'I have received so much affection that my heart is full of gratitude. Thanks to all the amazing staff at Albert Einstein Hospital!'

His condition had been described as stable.

On Friday, Pele was readmitted to hospital just three days after leaving having previously undergone an operation to remove a colon tumour.

Pele was briefly transferred back to an intensive care unit at the Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo, where he underwent surgery earlier this month, after suffering breathing difficulties.

However, he was seen in good spirits in a video as he worked out from his hospital bed.

Pele has been seen keeping fit in hospital as he continues his recovery after an operation. The Brazil legend was readmitted to intensive care just three days after leaving following an operation to remove a colon tumour, but says he is doing well despite a 'little step back'

His daughter Kely Nascimento posted a video of Pele on Instagram and added the caption: 'Instagram family, I saw you liked the updates so here's the update for today.

'First he did physio with super physiotherapist Adriano Barroco and with the help of Kely & Flavia's team of recreationists from 'The Kely & Flavia Show.

'Then a moment of self care and zen with the super nurse @leo_santiago007'

'Today was two steps forward!

'Thank you for all of the love and all of the messages.'

In the video Pele is seen punching the air with his fists while working on an exercise bike.

After Pele moved his legs, Kely joked: 'Move your arms, move your arms', with her father responding.

His daughter Kely Nascimento (left) posted a photo of them with Pele smiling on a hospital bed

Pele previously took to social media to tell fans he is doing well despite 'a little step back' in his recovery.

The three-time World Cup winner was expected to return home shortly after he left intensive care at the Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo on Tuesday. However, he returned to the ICU on Friday.

Pele has, however, since taken to Instagram to inform his followers that he has 'received visits from family members' and that he is 'continuing to smile every day'.

'My friends, I am still recovering very well. Today I received visits from family members and I continue to smile every day. Thank you for all the love I get from you,' Pele said on Instagram.

Kely Nascimento also took to Instagram with a photo of the pair to reassure fans that her father was already on the road to recovery following the procedure in September.

'There's already a lot of anxiety roaming the world these days and we don't want to be the reason for more,' she wrote on Instagram in a post which included a picture with her dad in hospital.

'This photo was taken just now. He is wearing a vest because he is Santista and the cold in SP bothers him! He is recovering well and within normal range. Promise!

'He doesn't like it when I say this so please don't tell him but he is an O'Keefe (sic) gentleman. The normal recovery scenario for a man of his age, after an operation like this, is sometimes two steps forward and one step back.

Pele shared the following message before he returned to the ICU on Friday evening. Plagued by health issues in recent years, Pele now uses a wheelchair during his public outings

'Yesterday (Thursday) he was tired and took a little step back. Today he took two forwards! I want to thank again, and always, the brilliant team here at Einstein and even more gratitude for all of the good energy that you are transmitting.'

Pele has struggled with his health in recent years and required surgery on his prostate in 2015, having been admitted to hospital twice in the space of six months.

In 2019, he was admitted again for a urinary infection - and in February of last year, his son Edinho said Pele was reluctant to leave the house because of hip issues.

Pele then revealed on September 6 that a 'suspicious lesion' had been detected during tests, prompting surgeons to operate.

The Brazilian legend - who vowed to tackle his issues 'with a smile' on his face - thanked fans for their well wishes when he initially left the ICU unit on Tuesday.

He said: 'I continue every day happier, with a lot of disposition to play 90 minutes, plus extra time.'

After winning the World Cup three times with Brazil, Pele remains an all-time great, and is his country's top goalscorer with 77 goals in 92 matches.

He rose to international prominence when he helped Brazil win the 1958 World Cup as a 17-year-old, repeating the feat in 1962 and 1970.

Officially, he scored 757 goals during a glittering career - club Santos claim his tally was closer to 1,000 - leaving him behind only Cristiano Ronaldo and Josef Biscan on the all-time list.

Additionally, he was was only recently overtaken as the top international goalscorer in South American history, when Lionel Messi scored a hat-trick for Argentina in their World Cup qualifier last week.

Messi has recorded his huge tally in 153 caps for Argentina, while Pele netted his 77 goals in 92 official matches for Brazil.

Pele plays down concerns over his health with Instagram post claiming he is only in hospital for a 'monthly visit' after reports he was admitted with 'swelling all over and heart failure issues with chemotherapy not working'

* Pele was taken into the Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo earlier this week
* Reports said the former footballer was suffering from 'swelling and heart issues'
* An update from the hospital said Pele was in a 'stable condition' and not in ICU
* Pele himself took to social media to tell his followers he was on a 'monthly visit'
* The 82-year-old thanked 'everyone who sends me good vibes' on Instagram

Brazilian soccer legend Pele on Thursday said in an Instagram post that he is at the hospital for a monthly visit and thanked his supporters for the positive messages he has received.

The 82-year old former forward, known as one of the greatest players of all time, posted a photo in which a picture of his face is projected on a building in Qatar, next to a message which says 'Get well soon.'

'Friends, I am at the hospital making my monthly visit,' he said in the post. 'It's always nice to receive positive messages like this. Thanks to Qatar for this tribute, and to everyone who sends me good vibes!'

On Tuesday, Pele was admitted to a hospital in Sao Paulo to re-evaluate a cancer treatment after he had a tumor removed from his colon in September 2021.

Pele, who has led Brazil to three world cup titles - 1958, 1962 and 1970 - has suffered health issues in recent years, but has remained active in social media.

Last month, he said he hoped to see Brazil's national squad capture a record-extending sixth title in Qatar.

Pele announced that he was only in hospital for a 'monthly visit' in an Instagram post

The 82-year-old, who is currently undergoing treatment for metastatic cancer, was taken into the Albert Einstein Hospital on Tuesday with swelling all over his body and heart issues.

It was also reported that his chemotherapy treatment is no longer working and Pele was suffering from mental confusion after being admitted.

However, an update from the hospital said the three-time World Cup winner did not need to be admitted to an Intensive Care Unit [ICU].

A statement issued to the Brazilian media said: 'After medical evaluation, the patient was taken to a common room, without the need for hospitalisation in a semi-intensive unit or ICU.

'The former player is in full control of vital function and [in a] stable clinical condition.'

Brazilian football legend Pele, 82, is in a 'stable condition' in hospital and not in intensive care after he was admitted on Tuesday suffering from 'swelling and heart failure issues'

The hospital confirmed Pele had been taken into hospital 'for a reassessment of the chemotherapy treatment of the colon tumour identified in September 2021.'

There is no time frame on Pele's hospital stay, and his wife Marcia Aoki and carer are by his bedside.

However, Pele's daughter Kely Nascimento, who is not in Brazil, had insisted on Tuesday that there was no need for alarm and that her father's hospital admission is 'no surprise or emergency'.

She posted on Instagram: 'Lots of alarm in the media today concerning my dad's health. He is in the hospital regulating medication.

Pele's wife and carer took him to hospital earlier this week but his condition is now stable. Pele's daughter Kely Nascimento insisted there was no need for alarm in a social media post. Pele has been in poor in health in recent years with a number of visits to the hospital

'There is no emergency or new dire prediction. I will be there for New Year's and promise to post some pictures.'

Pele was hospitalised for six days last year and underwent surgery to remove a tumour in his colon. The Globo news site in Brazil said Pele was undergoing routine examinations in Sao Paulo's Albert Einstein Hospital when the undisclosed issue was detected.

Taking on social media at the time, Pele allayed any fears over his health.

'My friends, thank you very much for the kind messages,' he wrote on Instagram.

'I thank God for feeling very well and for allowing Dr Fabio and Dr Miguel to take care of my health.

'Last Saturday I underwent surgery to remove a suspicious lesion in the right colon. The tumour was identified during the tests I mentioned last week.

'Fortunately, I'm used to celebrating great victories alongside you. I will face this match with a smile on my face, a lot of optimism and joy for living surrounded by the love of my family and friends.'

In 2020, Pele's son said his father was depressed over his poor health and reluctant to leave the house because he cannot walk without assistance, although Pele later publicly denied that statement.

The Brazilian had said: 'I am good. I continue to accept my physical limitations in the best way possible but I intend to keep the ball rolling.

'I have good days and bad days. That is normal for people of my age. I am not afraid, I am determined, confident in what I do.'

Pele is regarded as one of the greatest footballers in history and is the only player to win three World Cups.

He scored 655 goals in 700 club career games, while he also netted 77 times in 92 caps for Brazil.

Pele 'will spend Christmas in hospital' after medical reports show his cancer has WORSENED'... as his daughter asks for 'prayers' so he knows he's not 'alone'

* Pele was hospitalized on November 29 for doctors to reevaluate his treatment
* The Brazilian soccer icon has been battling colon cancer since September 2021
* An update said he requires greater care related to renal and cardiac dysfunction

Brazilian soccer icon Pele's health has worsened and he will spend Christmas in hospital as he continues to battle colon cancer.

Pele, 82, has been battling colon cancer since September 2021 and was hospitalized on November 29 for doctors to reevaluate his treatment.

The Sao Paulo's Albert Einstein Hospital released an update on Pele's condition Wednesday and revealed he now requires care for cardiac and renal dysfunction.

He has also been treated for a respiratory infection diagnosed following his hospitalization.

'Admitted since November 29 for a reassessment of chemotherapy therapy for colon tumor and treatment of a respiratory infection, Edson Arantes do Nascimento presents progression of the oncological disease and requires greater care related to renal and cardiac dysfunctions,' read the update from medical staff.

Brazilian soccer legend Pele's health has worsened as he continues to battle colon cancer. He has also been treated for a respiratory infection diagnosed following his hospitalization. Pele has been in and out of hospital since having a tumor removed from his colon in 2021

'The patient remains hospitalized in a common room, under the necessary care of the medical team.'

The legend's daughter, Kely Nascimento, said in an Instagram post that the support of his fans was a 'huge comfort' to him.

She wrote: 'Your love for him, your stories and your prayers are a HUGE comfort because we know we are not alone.

'Let's turn this room into a Sambadrome (just kidding), let's even make caipirinhas (not kidding!!).'

Pele has been in and out of hospital since having a tumor removed from his colon in September 2021 and has been undergoing chemotherapy in his fight against cancer.

The news comes after recent reports had provided fans with some optimism, claiming he had been improving.

'The patient continues to show improvement in the clinical status, in particular the respiratory infection. He remains in a regular room, is conscious and with stable vital signs,' medical staff at Sao Paulo's Albert Einstein Hospital said.

Sportsmail reported earlier this month that Pele had made 'progressive improvements' after he was taken to hospital for tests.

Despite initial concerns that he was close to death, his daughters Flavia and Kely Nascimento quickly moved to rubbish those reports and said he is 'sick' but was still supporting Brazil at the World Cup.

A previous update from the doctors treating him in Sao Paulo supported his daughters' claims but it appears his condition may have now taken a turn for the worse.

Pele is considered Brazil's greatest ever player and he had tweeted out that he would be watching his country's campaign at the World Cup in Qatar.

Pele, who is considered one of the greatest footballers ever, won three World Cups with Brazil. Brazil players held a banner showing support for Pele after their 4-1 victory over South Korea

He burst on to the global scene as a 17-year-old at the 1958 World Cup, helping Brazil to the first of their record five successes, before also winning the 1962 and 1970 World Cups with the national side.

He revealed he was 'rooting' for Brazil's current star players as he watched their World Cup last-16 match against South Korea from hospital.

However, Brazil's journey in the Gulf State came to an unexpectedly early end as they were shockingly eliminated by Croatia in the quarter finals.

Despite the World Cup exit, Pele offered congratulations to Neymar on matching his goalscoring record with Brazil during the game.

On Instagram, the legend posted a picture of Neymar, and wrote: 'I saw you grow, I cheered for you every day and I can finally congratulate you for reaching my number of goals with Brazil.

'We both know that this is more than a figure. Our biggest duty as athletes is to inspire. Inspire our teammates of today, the next generations and, above all, everyone who loves our sport.'

Pele went on to address Brazil's elimination from the tournament. 'Unfortunately this is not the happiest day for us.

'My record was set almost 50 years ago, and nobody had managed to get near it until now. You got there, kid. That shows how great your achievement is.'

The 82-year-old also watched the final of the tournament from hospital and once again took to social media to congratulate Lionel Messi and Argentina after their dramatic penalty shootout win against France.

Rest in peace, Pele..

UNITED SADDENED BY THE DEATH OF PELE

Everybody at Manchester United is saddened by the news that Brazil icon and friend of the club Pele has passed away at the age of 82.

Pele is credited with scoring a world record 1,281 goals in 1,363 appearances during a legendary 21-year career. It featured 77 goals in 92 matches for his country and the Brazilian remains the only player to win the World Cup three times.

United ambassador Sir Bobby Charlton has led the club’s tributes to his former opponent, long-time friend and fellow legend of world football.

While they never met at domestic level, the two played against one another as internationals with England and Brazil at the 1958, 1962 and 1970 World Cups, which were all won by Pele's side.

In a statement, Sir Bobby said: “Pele was a truly magical footballer and a wonderful human being. It was an honour to have shared a pitch with him and I send my sincerest condolences to his family, friends and the Brazilian people.”

Another member of the United Trinity, Denis Law, has also said: “This is very sad news indeed. Pele was an *unbelievable footballer; he had style, grace, flair and made everything look so easy. The precision in the way he played made him such a joy to watch. However, more than anything, he was a good man with a great *presence and a fantastic smile.”

Eric Cantona has previously honoured the Brazilian by comparing his football to great art. “An artist, in my eyes, is someone who can lighten up a dark room,” the Frenchman once said.

“I have never and will never find the difference between the pass from Pele to Carlos Alberto in the final of the World Cup in 1970 and the poetry of the young Rimbaud. There is in each of these human manifestations an expression of beauty which touches us and gives us a feeling of eternity.”
