Default Mesut Ozil

Jose Mourinho and Mesut Ozil were a marriage made in heaven for two years at Real Madrid... so Manchester United signing Arsenal contract rebel on free transfer isn't as crazy as it sounds

* Manchester United are considering moving for Mesut Ozil on a free transfer
* United boss Jose Mourinho used Ozil to great effect while at Real Madrid
* Ozil was 'the best No 10 in the world', according to Mourinho a few years ago
* Mourinho had Ozil working hard defensively and tactically sharp in Madrid
* Cristiano Ronaldo also loved Ozil for his creative qualities at the Bernabeu

Jose Mourinho had a love-hate relationship with Mesut Ozil at Real Madrid. The German midfielder was just 22 years old when he became one of Mourinho’s first signings in 2010.

For two years it was a marriage made in heaven and it was Ozil’s wonder pass at the Nou Camp for Crisitano Ronaldo to score that, in effect, won the league for Mourinho’s Madrid.

But in their third and final season together, Mourinho’s demands on Ozil began to take their toll and the German was the reason behind one of numerous spats between Mourinho and Sergio Ramos.

Mesut Ozil and Jose Mourinho formed a formidable partnership together at Real Madrid, where the midfielder shone brightly and the club beat Barcelona at their peak to the La Liga title. Ozil's Arsenal career looks set to end this season and Manchester United are plotting a move

But with the news that Manchester United are interested in signing Ozil from Arsenal, it seems the good memories have obviously out-lasted the bad ones. This is after all the player Mourinho described in 2013, when he was back at Chelsea, as 'the best No 10 in the world'.

Ozil never really grasped Spanish during his time at Madrid but that did not matter to Mourinho because he did seem to understand every word spoken to him by his manager. He was a flair player but in those first two seasons he showed a grafter’s instinct to follow Mourinho's detailed pre-match orders, even when they were detrimental to him being the star of the game.

Ozil showed the love was still there when he handed Mourinho his Arsenal shirt in 2013

There were times in those gruelling Clasicos that Ozil was asked, not just to work his magic between the lines and feed the forwards, but also track Gerard Pique when ever he tried to come out with the ball from the back – which was at every given opportunity – and drop deeper to close down Xavi and Sergio Busquets.

There were times when Ozil was exhausted by Mourinho's demands. He was hooked early in the second half of the first Clasico of the 2011-12 season when Barcelona won 3-1 at the Bernabeu. But the two always fell back in love and he was man of the match at the Nou Camp in the season’s second league Clasico - that pass to Ronaldo is seen as the pivotal moment in a season that ultimately delivered Mourinho the Spanish league he craved.

Occasionally against Barcelona, Mourinho would even dispense with Karim Benzema and Gonzalo Higuain, neither of whom he had complete faith in, and play Ozil up front with Angel di Maria and Ronaldo. He was confident that although there was not an out-and-out centre forward in that trio they would get goals and Ozil and Di Maria would track back to make a five in midfield when the team did not have the ball.

Ronaldo loved Ozil too, no-one put the ball just where he wanted it more. He was seen as the one Real Madrid player that would have made his way into the Barca team of the same era.

But the Ozil–Mourinho relationship burned out in season three. In November 2012 Real Madrid played Deportivo at home and were 3-1 up at half-time. That didn’t stop Mourinho hooking Ozil in the interval. He had rollicked him from the touchline during the first 45 minutes and the verbal onslaught continued at half-time. Ozil did not reappear for the second half… but his shirt did.

Ramos put Ozil’s shirt on beneath his own and the plan was to score and take off his own jersey to reveal the German’s. It would have been the perfect protest to Mourinho for hooking one of the most popular players in the Real Madrid dressing room. He never scored, but the No 10 was so visible beneath his own No 4 that it made the front page of Marca the following day.

At the end of the 2012-13 season Mourinho was gone and Ozil was sold to Arsenal to finance the purchase of Gareth Bale. Some speculated that Mourinho had advised Real Madrid president Florentino Perez to get rid of Ozil. But it didn’t seem that way at the start of the 13-14 season when Mourinho – now at Chelsea – said: 'Ozil is unique. There is no one like him, not even a bad copy. He is the best No 10 in the world.

'He made things easier for me and for his team-mates with his vision and his decision making. I see a bit of Figo and Zidane in him. Signing Ozil makes Arsenal title contenders.'

The comments were perhaps just another way of winding up Arsene Wenger, putting pressure on him to win the league. But they also seemed genuine. Mourinho went to Spain to win La Liga and Ozil was one of the main reasons why he achieved his goal.

Mesut Ozil must snub Manchester United interest and return to the Bundesliga, says Karl-Heinz Riedle

* Mesut Ozil is expected to quit Arsenal when his contract ends after this season
* Manchester United are reportedly considering a swoop for the playmaker
* Karl-Heinz Riedle thinks Ozil would be best served by heading back to Germany

Former Germany striker Karl-Heinz Riedle has advised Mesut Ozil to quit Arsenal, snub the rumoured interest from Manchester United and return to the Bundesliga.

Ozil is expected to leave Arsenal after this season. He is currently in the final year of the five-year contract he signed when joining from Real Madrid in 2013.

United boss Jose Mourinho signed Ozil for Madrid from Werder Bremen in 2010 and has been linked with a move for the Germany international at the end of the season.

Manchester United have been linked with signing Germany international Ozil on a free transfer. Former Germany international Karl-Heinz Reidle thinks Ozil should return to Germany

But Riedle, a 1990 World Cup winner with Germany, thinks Ozil should head back to the Bundesliga.

'Ozil going back to Germany? Who knows,' Riedle told Omnisport. 'There's a rumour that he goes to Manchester United. He shouldn't do it.

'Ozil is a quality player. If you see his skills, it's just amazing what he can do on the pitch. We would be very happy if he comes back to a club in Germany, for sure. But I'm not his agent so I don't know where he ends up.

'Best option is if he would, from my point, come to the Bundesliga. It's a really good option because we get another national player back in our league.

'But if he is looking only for the money, then it would be very difficult to find the same kind of money in the German league than he can find in the Premier League.'

Ozil's Arsenal side are back in action on Saturday against Watford in the Premier League's late kick-off.

Arsenal have 13 points from seven Premier League games so far and are fifth in the standings.

Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil wants to join Manchester United when his contract expires at end of the season

* Sportsmail understands Ozil has told friends that Mourinho will move for him

Mesut Ozil wants Jose Mourinho to rescue him from his Arsenal malaise, and has set his heart on joining Manchester United when his contract expires at the end of the season

Sportsmail understands Ozil has told friends that he believes Mourinho will make a move for him next summer.

Unless there is a dramatic turnaround in the coming months, Ozil will become a free agent ahead of next season after telling Arsenal he is not prepared to sign a new contract.

Arsenal will look to eliminate the prospect of losing Ozil to United for nothing next summer by finding a buyer for the Germany international when the transfer window re-opens in January.

There has been minimal interest in Ozil, but Arsenal are confident they can find a buyer for Ozil before his contract expires.

Inter Milan have made their interest in Ozil public, but with the player believing United are ready to swoop, the former Real Madrid star may resist any January move.

Ozil and Mourinho have a long-standing relationship having worked together at the Bernabeu, and while the pair didn’t always see eye-to-eye in Spain, Mourinho rates Ozil as one of the best creative midfielders on the planet.

Ozil, despite his undoubted talent, has failed to produce the sort of performances that saw Arsenal pay a then club record £42.5million for him in 2013.

Indeed, his role in Arsene Wenger’s plans is likely to decrease in the coming weeks amid concerns from within the club about Ozil’s motivation this season.

Arsene Wenger will not want to lose Ozil to his biggest managerial adversary, particularly if Mourinho manages to get the best out of the German.

'Mesut Ozil on a free to Manchester United looks a shoo-in', claims Arsenal legend Ian Wright

* Manchester United are keen on bringing Arsenal's Mesut Ozil to Old Trafford
* The German's current deal at the Emirates Stadium runs out next summer
* Barcelona are also targeting Ozil but Jose Mourinho hopes to lure him to United

Mesut Ozil's transfer from Arsenal to Manchester United appears to be a 'shoo-in', according to former Gunners striker Ian Wright.

United boss Jose Mourinho is eager to rekindle his relationship with the former Real Madrid playmaker, whose contract at the Emirates Stadium runs out next summer.

And Wright believes Ozil, also a target for Barcelona, will snub a new deal with Arsenal to move to Old Trafford for free next term.

'Mesut Ozil on a free to Manchester United looks a shoo-in,' Wright told the BBC. 'I'm sure Jose would love to do that.

'That would frighten me to death. He is a great talent and having great players around him would lift him up as well.

Mesut Ozil's transfer from Arsenal to Manchester United is a 'shoo-in', Ian Wright has said. The Germany international's current deal at the Emirates Stadium runs out next summer. Jose Mourinho is keen on bringing the German playmaker to Old Trafford on a free next year

'I'm sure him and his agent would not push it this far if they were going to sign (for Arsenal).'

The German is free to talk to clubs outside of the Premier League and sign pre-contract agreements from January 1.

However, Mourinho hopes his relationship with Ozil will prove enough of a sway to lure him to the North West over a switch to the Nou Camp.

Ozil, meanwhile, is set to miss Wednesday's clash against Huddersfield but is expected to be fit for Saturday’s showdown against United on Saturday.

His absence could open the door for Jack Wilshere to make his first Premier League start since returning to the club following last season’s loan spell at Bournemouth.

Alex Iwobi and Danny Welbeck are also in contention to stand in for Ozil, if he fails to prove his fitness.

Meanwhile, Theo Walcott has returned to training after missing two weeks with his own illness.

Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil eyeing Manchester United move if he leaves... instead of a switch to Barcelona

* A new deal worth £235,000 a week has already been turned down by Ozil
* Ozil wants closer to £300,000 and has worked with Jose Mourinho before

Mesut Ozil favours a move to Manchester United over Barcelona should he leave Arsenal in the coming months.

Arsene Wenger confirmed this week that the Gunners are still negotiating with Ozil, whose contract runs down at the end of this season.

A new deal worth £235,000 a week has already been turned down, with the Germany international making it plain to friends he is eyeing a switch to United.

Mesut Ozil wants to join Manchester United, over Barcelona, if he leaves Arsenal next summer. United manager Jose Mourinho is keeping an eye on the playmaker's situation at Arsenal

Ozil wants closer to £300,000 and Jose Mourinho has been watching his situation closely as the United boss plans an overhaul at Old Trafford.

The 29-year-old would be open to a reunion with his old Real Madrid boss. The pair worked well together at the Bernabeu, with Ozil known to have quickly taken to Mourinho's methods.

United's need for added attacking flair is evident, particularly after Sunday's derby defeat by Manchester City, and Mourinho wants Ed Woodward to release the purse strings next summer.

Juventus join Manchester United in chase for Mesut Ozil, with close friend Sami Khedira hoping to help lure Arsenal star to Italy

* Juventus will join the race to sign out-of-contract star Mesut Ozil in the summer
* The World Cup winner will be a free agent and is set to leave Arsenal this year
* Manchester United have been heavily linked with a shock move for the German
* Reports in Italy claim Juve will step in and use Sami Khedira to entice him to join

Juventus will join Manchester United in battling it out for the signature of Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil, according to reports in Italy.

The 29-year-old is entering the final months of his contract and is set to walk away for free at the end of the season.

Ozil's availability is set to prompt a battle for his services among top European clubs, with Jose Mourinho and United early front-runners for the former Real Madrid man.

Reports in Italian publication Calciomercato this week however claim Juve have entered the race, looking to set the ground work in order to have Ozil ready to move to Turin once the summer transfer window opens.

The report reveals, 'Juventus have followed the German champion for three seasons,' indicating the interest of the Old Lady is longstanding.

Juventus will join Manchester United in battling it out to sign Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil. Juventus will use Sami Khedira to persuade his close friend to join, according to reports

Juve will face stiff competition from United, who have the advantage of being able to offer Ozil the chance to continue his work in the Premier League.

Mourinho is also well acquainted with the playmaker, after having managed him in La Liga with Spanish giants Real Madrid.

Mourinho made Ozil a key figure in his Madrid side and has previously stated that he believes the playmaker to be the finest No 10 in world football.

Juve have an ace up their sleeve however, in the form of veteran midfielder Sami Khedira.

Khedira, like Ozil, is of Turkish-German descent and played in the same Madrid side as his compatriot under Mourinho.

According to the report Juve will look to use this to their advantage, hoping Khedira can sway his close friend into making a move to Serie A and playing out the twilight years of his career in Italian football. Juve have also been heavily linked with a move for Liverpool's Emre Can.

Ozil wasn't selected recently as Arsenal were eliminated from the FA Cup in the third round by Nottingham Forest.

A weakened Gunners side picked by under fire boss Arsene Wenger saw Ozil and a host of fellow superstars rested from action as the cup holders were beaten 4-2.

'I think he's a player that can link a team together, he's got great quality and could be an answer short term': Paul Scholes believes signing Mesut Ozil would improve Manchester United

* Manchester United flattered to deceive in their 1-0 away win against Partizan
* United have not shot on target from open play in the last two Europa League ties
* Paul Scholes feels Mesut Ozil would help solve their lack of creativity problem

Paul Scholes has identified Mesut Ozil as the man to solve Manchester United's lack of creativity conundrum after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side flattered to deceive in their 1-0 away win to Partizan.

An Anthony Martial penalty was enough to separate the two sides on a night where United failed to register a single shot on target in open play for the second success Europa League fixture.

And Scholes, who for years was master-in-chief of pulling the strings and dictating United's attacking play, feels his former club should rescue Ozil from his Arsenal nightmare to give him the number 10 shirt at Old Trafford.

Speaking on BT Sport after the game, Scholes said: 'I can’t understand that (Ozil's situation at Arsenal). I think he’s a player that can link a team together.

'I think he’s got great quality, he’s shown that in his career, he could be an answer short term, I don’t know. I think that would be up to him.

'I can’t see it happening but I think he is a player that United could do with right now.'

Scholes had launched a scathing attack on United's lack of creativity at the end of the game, suggesting the players looked like 'strangers' on the pitch.

Paul Scholes has said that Manchester United should sign Arsenal star Mesut Ozil. United have not had a shot on target from open play in their last two Europa League games. Scholes said his former club lack a creative play to link the midfield and forward players. Mesut Ozil has been cast aside at Arsenal and Scholes sees the German as a good option

The 44-year-old said that United's limited options going forward are hindering them.

'There’s no link between the midfield players and the strikers,' he said. 'The weight of pass at times was so bad.'

'You want to be encouraged you want to see some bits of good play now and again, a one-two here and there, the number ten receiving the ball on the half turn, but there’s a lack of encouragement.'
