Default Re: Frenkie de Jong

Manchester United are edging closer to agreeing terms with Barcelona for midfielder Frenkie de Jong after submitting an improved bid over £60m... as transfer saga looks set to end THIS WEEK

* Manchester United's initial £60m offer for Frenkie de Jong was deemed too low
* They are now thought to have made an improved bid for the Dutch midfielder
* New United boss Erik ten Hag won the domestic double with De Jong at Ajax
* The manager is hoping to bring a number of his former players to Old Trafford

Manchester United are inching towards a conclusion in their protracted pursuit of Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona and hope to have the transfer completed this week.

United are thought to have made an improved bid for the midfielder after their initial offer of £60m was turned down as Barca did not want to make a loss on a player they had signed for £65m from Ajax.

Erik ten Hag's side is thought to have now made an improved offer for the 25-year-old. Barcelona want to at least break even on him.

De Jong was initially reluctant to leave Barcelona, but has been persuaded by managers at both ends of the deal that joining United would be a good move.

Frenkie de Jong was initially sceptical about leaving Barcelona but was persuaded by Xavi. New United boss Erik ten Hag won the domestic double with de Jong in their time at Ajax

Ten Hag worked with the Dutch midfielder at Ajax from 2017-19, where the pair won the domestic double and reached a Champions League semi final in 2019.

He could be joined by a host of other Ajax stars, with Antony, Lisandro Martinez and Nicolas Tagliafico also linked with moves to Old Trafford.

Christian Eriksen is another name closely linked with United, and ten Hag is also looking to sign a centre back and backup goalkeeper.

The Red Devils will be keen to confirm their first summer transfer after missing out on Darwin Nunes to Liverpool and seemingly being snubbed by Jurrien Timber.

Having already lost Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard, United will need to strengthen considerably if they are to improve on their dire 2021/2 season.

Manchester United's deal for £70m Frenkie de Jong is 90 per cent complete - with Barcelona receiving an initial £55m for Erik ten Hag's No 1 target

* Manchester United's deal to sign Frenkie de Jong is edging near to completion
* The transfer is 90 per cent finished with only the finer details to be ironed out
* The Barcelona midfielder - who could cost £70m - was Erik ten Hag's top target
* The pair worked together at Ajax as they reached the Champions League semis

Manchester United are closing in on a deal to sign Erik ten Hag's No 1 transfer target Frenkie de Jong.

Sportsmail sources have indicated an agreement between United and Barcelona is for the Holland star is '90 per cent' complete with just the finer details of the deal left to finalise.

It is understood United will pay around an initial £55million to the Spanish club for De Jong. That fee could rise close to £70m.

A complete agreement is still to be found but there is a growing sense that a deal can be struck this week.

Manchester United's deal to sign Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong is 90 per cent complete. New United boss Erik ten Hag is edging closer to landing his No 1 transfer target De Jong - who worked with him at Ajax

De Jong is open to signing for United and agreeing personal terms with the Dutchman is unlikely to be a problem.

The Holland international has emerged as United's No 1 summer transfer target as Ten Haag looks to rebuild a team that struggled last season

De Jong and Ten Hag are understood to have a close relationship from their time working together at the Amsterdam Arena.

Indeed, the lure of a reunion with Ten Hag is described as a major factor in De Jong's willingness to become a United player this summer.

De Jong was initially sceptical about leaving Barcelona but was persuaded by Xavi. Ten Hag took his first pre-season training session this week and is shaping up his squad

He was initially reluctant to leave Barcelona, but has been persuaded by managers at both ends of the deal that joining United would be a good move.

Ten Hag worked with the Dutch midfielder at Ajax from 2017-19, where the pair won the domestic double and reached a Champions League semi final in 2019.

United initially bid £60m for De Jong, but that offer was turned down as Barca did not want to make a loss on a player they had signed for £65m from Ajax in 2019. They later returned with a bid of £68m, with Barcelona keen to at least break even.

Now the deal may reach as high as £70m as part of a new structuring of the transfer, and could be joined by a host of other Ajax stars - including Antony, Lisandro Martinez and Nicolas Tagliafico, who are all being targeted by United.

De Jong has played 140 times for Barcelona since joining from Ajax, scoring 13 times in his three seasons. His only trophy at the Nou Camp was the Copa del Rey in 2021.

Default Re: Frenkie de Jong

Frenkie de Jong will be a bargain if Manchester United sign him for £55m... the Dutch midfielder has had success with Erik ten Hag and his versatility can help the rebuild at Old Trafford

* Versatile Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong is set to join Manchester United
* He has previously worked with new United manager Erik ten Hag at Ajax
* The pair won the domestic double and reached a Champions League semi-final
* De Jong will be a loss for Barcelona, who would not sell him unless they had to

Frenkie de Jong was once sold for just €1 but if he can restore Manchester United to the elite of English football, it will be impossible to put a price on his true worth.

De Jong has been Erik ten Hag's No1 target ever since he arrived at Old Trafford and Sportsmail sources have indicated a deal between United and Barcelona for the Netherlands star is '90 per cent' complete, with just the finer details left to conclude.

There is optimism that the transfer will be completed this week. United will pay an initial £55million to the Spanish club for De Jong, a fee that could rise close to £70m.

If Declan Rice is valued at £150m, De Jong is a steal. The 25-year-old can control the pace of a game in the manner of Luka Modric or Marco Verratti, while also possessing a burst of pace over a short distance, brilliant vision and flawless touch and awareness.

When the Netherlands beat England in the Nations League in 2019, De Jong ran the show.

He was a key member of the Ajax team who reached the Champions League semi-finals in 2019 under Ten Hag, before they were defeated in heart-breaking fashion by Tottenham.

Versatile Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong is set to join Manchester United for £55m. Ten Hag could be set for a reunion with De Jong, one of his key players when the two were at Ajax. Erik ten Hag took Ajax to a Champions League final and won the domestic double with de Jong

Indeed, De Jong's close relationship with Ten Hag has been one of the key factors in his decision and agreeing personal terms is unlikely to be a problem.

Were circumstances different, Barcelona would not even contemplate selling De Jong, a player at the peak of his powers. Yet the Catalan giants' financial situation means they need to sell at least one big name this summer and De Jong is a prize asset, while Barcelona also have teenage Spain stars Pedri and Gavi in midfield.

Both are adored by supporters and were either sold, it would make president Joan Laporta hugely unpopular. Despite his quality, De Jong is different. He was bought from Ajax for £65m and had no previous affinity with Barcelona.

Given the urgent need to make money, it would be regarded by most as a decent deal if Barcelona could make a small profit on him.

Not that it would be quite as good as the agreement Ajax struck with Willem II in 2015. The clubs were haggling over a fee of about £740,000 and could not find a number that both were happy with.

Instead, De Jong moved to Amsterdam for a symbolic sum of €1, with Willem guaranteed a percentage of any future sale. De Jong is a potential star of this winter's World Cup.

After a dazzling display in Rotterdam in the Nations League this month, Wales boss Rob Page said De Jong was one of the best his team had faced. He added: 'Let's hope for fans' sake he is playing in the Premier League next season.'

Default Re: Frenkie de Jong

Barcelona 'want to sell Frenkie de Jong to Manchester United because they owe him £75m over the next FOUR years' as president Joan Laporta looks to restructure the club's wage bill

* The club are said to be keen to sell him to Manchester United this summer
* Barcelona are looking to raise capital this summer through player sales
* Frenkie de Jong is one of a number of players in the squad with a high value
* Owing to the pandemic and other clauses, Barcelona owe the midfielder millions

Barcelona reportedly need to sell Frenkie de Jong this summer owing to the enormous sums that they are liable to pay him over the next four years of his current contract with the club.

Speculation has been swirling around the Dutchman's future this summer, with Manchester United having agreed a deal in principle with the Spanish giants. It appeared at one stage as though the move was going to be a formality.

However, Barcelona president Joan Laporta last week threw a spanner in the works by suggesting that the Catalan club had 'no intention' of selling De Jong this summer.

Despite Laporta's bullishness over the midfielder's future, a report in Spanish publication Marca has outlined why Barcelona do want to sell the player.

According to the Madrid-based paper, should De Jong see out the remaining four years on his current deal, Barcelona will pay the player £75m in wages.

The report states that the reason this figure appears so astronomical is owing to the enormous financial deal that the club initially awarded the midfielder with in 2019. It is believed this amounts to around £12m per year.

Barcelona are said to owe Dutchman Frenkie de Jong around £75m over the next four years. It is suggested that this means Barcelona feel they must sell the player to Manchester United. Joan Laporta said that the club wished to hold on to Frenkie de Jong this summer

The pandemic and the financial problems football clubs, but in particular Barcelona, suffered during that period means that they deferred payments to De Jong to be paid after the event when their financial footing was more secure.

De Jong is said to have reduced his salary considerably over the pandemic-hit seasons, with it reducing from £12m to £2.5m in 2021-22 and then to £7.75m last season.

It is reported that De Jong's fixed salary could double by next season. Marca suggest that if he were paid £7.75m last season, owing to his deferred payments this could rise to around £15m next season. Then, they say, he will also be owed £2.5m in bonuses.

The next season, 2023-24, will see his salary increase even further. The Spanish publication say De Jong's salary for that year in total could come to £23m.

These figures all come before what Marca refer to as 'variables'. These are payable to the Dutchman upon him meeting certain conditions or the club winning titles or even just reaching the final of the Champions League.

These added variables could amount to around £6.8m, or £1.7m per year for four years.

Barcelona's financial struggles are no secret and the club must sell or offload players to ensure that it can bring others in this summer. The club has already sold off 10 per cent of its television rights for the next 25 years in a bid to boost the coffers this summer, with them not having been able to register Andreas Christensen and Franck Kessie, signed on free transfers, for a number of weeks.

Manchester United are the frontrunners for De Jong having identified him as their primary summer target.

Default Re: Frenkie de Jong

Manchester United's pursuit of No 1 summer transfer target Frenkie de Jong is being held up because Barcelona still owe the Dutch midfielder £17MILLION in deferred wages and bonuses

* Manchester United's No 1 transfer target is still Frenkie de Jong this summer
* Any move for Dutchman is being held up by financial difficulties with Barcelona
* They owe midfielder deferred wages and bonuses that he has not been paid
* Another United target, Anthony, feels as though he could be priced out of move

Manchester United's protracted move for Frenkie de Jong is being held up as he is owed over £17million in outstanding wages and bonuses by Barcelona.

The 25-year old agreed to defer some of his wages to help the club during the Covid pandemic but with his departure pending De Jong's representatives want the player suitably compensated before he joins Manchester United.

United have agreed an outline fee with Barcelona for de Jong and had hoped to have him signed prior to leaving on tour this Friday. Discussions are continuing with de Jong open to joining amid regular talks with Erik ten Hag.

De Jong has played 140 times for Barcelona since joining from Ajax, scoring 13 times in his three seasons. His only trophy at the Nou Camp was the Copa del Rey in 2021.

A switch has also been complicated by Barcelona president Joan Laporta publicly insisting the club have no intention of letting De Jong leave.

He said in a press conference presenting new signing Franck Kessie: 'Frenkie is not for sale. He is a Barcelona player. We don't want to transfer him.'

United are determined to add new signings before the week is out, however.

Barcelona still owe Frenkie de Jong money in bonuses and deferred wages. The news will come as a blow to United boss Erik ten Hag, who sees De Jong as a top priority

Having already reached agreement in principle on a three year deal with Christian Eriksen they are focusing attention on Ajax defender Lisandro Martinez.

Ajax anticipate new offers from both United and Arsenal over the next days with the Argentine keen to leave for the Premier League.

Lisandro's team-mate Antony was hoping to earn a move to United also but his £70m valuation is prohibitive and the Brazilian fears he will be priced out of a transfer.

The former Sao Paulo attacker joined the Dutch team in 2020 and has made 78 appearances in all competitions, scoring 22 goals and making 19 assists.

United have dismissed reports that they have already made a bid for the winger as 'nonsense' with their immediate focus on Lisandro.

They know there is an urgency around that deal with Arsenal pushing to sign the 24-year old who is valued at around £43million.

Both clubs have offered £38m and are discussing revised bids.
