Default Tyrell Malacia

A dynamic young left-back with the desire to attack... and statistically superior to Luke Shaw! Tyrell Malacia could be the perfect signing for Manchester United this summer, but who is the £13m star hoping to restore the Red Devils to their glory days?

* Manchester United have agreed a £12.9m deal for Feyenoord star Tyrell Malacia
* Malacia is a player Ten Hag had identified as a key signing before joining United
* The 22-year-old star is known for his speed, agility and dynamism going forward
* He is also good at reading the game and making important tackles for his team
* Sportsmail have revealed everything you need to know about the new signing

Feyenoord star Tyrell Malacia is set to become Erik ten Hag's first signing with the player set to complete a medical after Manchester United agreed a £12.9million deal for the player.

The 22-year-old was on a list of targets Erik ten Hag submitted to the Red Devils after agreeing to join the club from Ajax. He felt the Dutch international would be a beneficial signing for United.

Sportsmail have profiled the left-back, who is set to arrive at Old Trafford ahead of next season. We have outlined exactly who the Dutchman is, how he will fare in the Premier League, where he will play for United and so much more.

Who is Tyrell Malacia?

Malacia is a product of the Feyenoord youth academy. He joined the system at the age of nine and honed his skills with the junior side of the club until 2015 when he signed his first professional contract.

Malacia continued to represent the Feyenoord U19's before being called up to join the first team on their training camp in Spain alongside Mats Knoester and Dylan Vente.

The youngster made his professional debut for the club in December 2017 - playing a full 90 minutes when Feyenoord beat Napoli 2–1 in their Champions League fixture.

Malacia went on to make his Eredivisie debut on 13 December 2017 when Feyenoord played against SC Heerenveen.

Feyenoord star Tyrell Malacia is set to become Manchester United's first signing this summer. Malacia is a product of the Feyenoord youth academy and plays for the Dutch national team

During that time, Malacia began to establish himself on the international scene. He earned caps at U16, U17, U18 and U19 level for Holland. He also represented his nation in the U17 European Championship.

However, on August 27, 2021, Malacia received his first call-up to the Dutch first-team for games against Norway, Montenegro and Turkey. He was handed his debut on September 4, 2021, in the match against Montenegro.

Malacia has continued to excel domestically and internationally. He was even named in the UEFA Europa Conference League Team of the Season in 2022, after winning a runners-up medal during the tournament.

How well suited is he to the Premier League?

Malacia has the pace and acceleration to thrive in the Premier League. He also has the dynamism and athleticism to help Manchester United rediscover their attacking prowess.

However, there may be some concerns about Malacia's height - given the fact he is only 5ft 6in, while the likes of Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane are 6ft 3in and 6ft 2in respectively.

Malacia has the pace and acceleration to thrive in the Premier League next season. However, he is regarded as a small defender with the likes of Harry Maguire trumping him

Nevertheless, Malacia excels in his ability to tackle and intercept the ball well. He also is also fast, powerful and dangerous at both ends of the field.

That being said, Malacia could improve the quality of his crosses - considering he could be feeding more balls into the box than any other Manchester United defender as his stats trump Maguire, Varane and Luke Shaw in that particular area.

Where would he fit in Erik ten Hag's system?

Malacia is a dynamic young defender that excels in the left-back position. However, he has the ability to play at centre-back when needed due to his versatility.

There will be competition in the form of Shaw for a place in Ten Hag's starting XI, and making himself No 1 choice will be easier said than done as the England international established himself as United's first-choice left-back a long time ago.

But, statistically, Malacia is the superior defender. He makes more clearances, tackles, interceptions and crosses than Shaw. He is also deemed to be fitter, faster and more dynamic than the 26-year-old.

Malacia also launches more attacks from the defensive third of the pitch compared to Shaw. However, the England star does make more blocks, win more aerial duels and create more chances than the 22-year-old defender.

What is his playing style?

Malacia is a creative young player with great technical ability. He is known for using his speed and explosive power in 1v1 situations. He also carries the ball well up the pitch and distributes effectively to his team-mates.

Malacia also possesses excellent ball control and has the ability to change the direction of play by passing or dribbling - making him a real offensive threat.

The 22-year-old boasts an endless amount of energy and likes to get ahead of the ball - overlapping with his winger to provide crosses into the box.

Malacia is a dynamic young defender that could play as a left-back in Erik ten Hag's system. Malacia is a creative young player with great technical ability and impressive pace. Malacia will have to compete with Luke Shaw for a place in the Manchester United starting XI

His fluidity and dynamism going forwards on the left-hand-side makes him a real asset to his team - providing lost of activity down the flank during 90 minutes.

Defensively, Malacia is regarded as relatively small in stature. However, that does not impede his performances on the pitch.

He is courageous, tenacious and willing to put himself on the line for his team-mates.

The Dutch international is also fearless and aggressive in his defensive approach but possesses good awareness, recognition of play and spatial consciousness.

His ability to anticipate play and time his tackles well allows him to make key interceptions and clearances for his team-mates throughout the games.

How badly do Manchester United need him?

Manchester United registered an interest in signing Malacia when the transfer window first opened. However, their pursuit of the 22-year-old defender took a hit when they turned their attention to Frenkie de Jong.

Ten Hag was eager to secure the services of the Barcelona midfielder and neglected Malacia as a result. Therefore, the Dutch international was poised to join French side Lyon instead of the Premier League giants.

However, with De Jong talks advanced, United have switched their sights back to Malacia's deal and have an now reached an agreement with Feyenoord for £12.9m plus a further £1.7m in add ons - trumping Lyon's offer of £12.9m all in.

United's move for the youngster is an interesting one considering they are well stacked in the left-back position.

Nevertheless, Ten Hag believes Malacia will provide the squad with the extra bit of quality Manchester United need for the 2022-2023 campaign.

United are expected to offload Alex Telles amid building interest from elsewhere but Malacia will still have to compete with Luke Shaw for a place in Ten Hag's starting XI.

What's been said about him?

Ten Hag has been a long-term admirer of Malacia - with footage recently emerging of the Manchester United manager crediting the defender during a game against his old club Ajax.

In a compilation of Malacia's best moments posted online by a fan, the cameras focused on Ten Hag in the dugout. The Ajax boss was seen pointing in the player's direction and shouting: 'That kid at left back is amazing.'

The high praise certainly didn't stop there, with Ten Hag then ordering assistant coach Michael Reiziger sat next to him to 'take note of him'.

Last year, the 52-year-old was asked if Malacia was one of his transfer targets while still at Ajax. Ten Hag remained coy with his response but let everyone know what he thought of the defender.

'We do think he is a good player, yes,' Ten Hag said. 'A transfer for Malacia to us is not an issue in the first place. Before we get all speculations again; it does not play at all.

'We can accommodate a departure of [Nicolas] Tagliafico within our current selection. If it is really necessary, we have a shadow list indeed. Whether Malacia is on that list? I'm not going to tell you.'

Incoming £13m left back Tyrell Malacia arrives at Carrington ahead of his Manchester United medical as Erik ten Hag seals his first signing as boss amid tough transfer window

* Dutch left back Tyrell Malacia has been pictured arriving at Man United's base
* He was driven into Carrington early on Monday as he prepares for his medical
* Malacia is set to join in a £13m deal as Erik ten Hag finally makes his first move

Manchester United have taken a step closer to landing Erik ten Hag his first signing as Dutch left back Tyrell Malacia arrived at Carrington ahead of his medical.

It has been a frustrating start to the transfer window for United, who have watched a number of their rivals add to their squads in recent weeks.

But Malacia is United bound in a £13million deal from Feyenoord and the 22-year-old looked relaxed as he was driven into United's Carrington training base early on Monday morning.

Inbound Manchester United signing Tyrell Malacia (pictured back) seen arriving at Carrington. The 22-year-old left back is heading for Manchester United in a £13million deal from Feyenoord

Malacia is only 22 but his stock has rocketed since becoming a mainstay in Feyenoord's first team and he will hold ambitions of locking down the left back spot for club and country in a World Cup year.

He will challenge Luke Shaw for the starting spot at Manchester United and will be confident he can win that battle.

Malacia played 136 times for Feyenoord and played a key role in helping guide them into the Europa Conference League final last season, where they lost narrowly to Jose Mourinho's Roma.

The Dutchman has looked to be on the verge of a move to France after Lyon agreed a deal with Feyenoord.

Malacia will be Erik ten Hag's first signing since becoming Manchester United's new manager

But United, alerted to his availability, acted quickly and gazumped Lyon's offer to bring him to Manchester.

Ten Hag wants to make a series of additions to his squad this summer but has so far been frustrated.

Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong is a primary target, while Antony, a striker who worked with Ten Hag at Ajax, is feared to be too expensive with a £70m price tag on his head.

Centre back Lisandro Martinez, also of Ajax, is a top target, but United face stiff competition from Arsenal, with the bidding in that race currently at £38m.

Ten Hag, who has already laid out hid core principles to the players back in training so far, is overseeing large-scale change in the squad.

Paul Pogba, Edinson Cavani, Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata and Nemanja Matic have all departed over the last month and Malacia is set to end the drought of arrivals.

Meanwhile it emerged on Saturday that Cristiano Ronaldo wants to leave the club again, telling his employers to allow him to move on if they receive an appropriate offer.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner only returned to United last August, but he has been unhappy for several months due to the team's poor form and regular turnover of managers.

He wants to challenge for major honours in the final years of his career, and feels this is unlikely to happen if he stays at United.

Erik ten Hag's Man United revolution is FINALLY underway as Dutch left back Tyrell Malacia becomes the first new face at Old Trafford, completing a £14.6m switch from Feyenoord

* Manchester United have made their first signing of the summer in Tyrell Malacia
* The Dutch left-back arrives from Feyenoord as Erik ten Hag's first United signing
* Ten Hag is now looking to add Christian Eriksen and Frenkie de Jong to his side

Tyrell Malacia has become Erik Ten Hag's first signing as Manchester United manager after completing a transfer from Feyenoord worth £12.9million plus another £1.7m in add-ons.

The 22-year-old Holland left back has spent the last two days undergoing a medical at the club's Carrington training base, and United confirmed that he has signed a four-year deal.

A statement read: 'Manchester United is please to confirm that Tyrell Malacia has joined the club, signing a contract until June 2026 with the option to extend for a further year.'

Malacia is United's first recruit under Ten Hag and he will join in time to go on a pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia on Friday.

Malacia, who has made 136 appearances for Feyenoord and five for Holland, said: 'It's an incredible feeling to have joined Manchester United. This is a new chapter for me, a new league with new team-mates and a tremendous manager leading us.

'I know from playing against his teams in the Eredivisie, the qualities that he has and what he demands of his players.

Tyrell Malacia has sealed a £14.6m move to Manchester United, becoming their first signing. Malacia said that he has felt encouraged after holding talks with Ten Hag over his United move

'Whilst I know that I am still young and will continue to develop, I can promise the United fans that I will leave everything on the pitch every time I pull on the red shirt.

'I'll always be thankful to Feyenoord for all they have given to me and my family. None of this would be possible if it wasn't for them.

'Now I'm ready to focus on the future with United, and help my new club achieve success.'

Malacia was pictured with a big smile as he signed his contract alongside Ten Hag, who will be relieved to finally have his first signing secured in the week of the squad jetting off for their pre-season tour.

The club have also verbally agreed terms with free agent Christian Eriksen over a three-year deal and remain in talks over Barcelona midfielder Frenkie De Jong and Ajax centre back Lisandro Martinez.

Speaking on the first recruit arriving, John Murtough, Manchester United football director, said: 'Tyrell is an exciting, dynamic young footballer with excellent experience for his age, including five seasons in the Eredivisie, a European final and full international honours for the Netherlands.

'We look forward to seeing him continue to develop under the guidance of Erik ten Hag and his coaching team in the years ahead.

'Everyone at Manchester United welcomes Tyrell to the club.'

The 22-year-old saw his reputation soar having made 136 appearances for Feyenoord. Ten Hag will now see Malacia and Luke Shaw battle to be his starting left back next season

Malacia is no stranger to Manchester United having followed them closely as a youngster.

The left back revealed prior to his move that his admiration for Holland and United hero Robin van Persie formed part of his desire to play for the Red Devils one day; a dream that is now reality.

'I always followed Manchester United because Robin van Persie played there as a Feyenoord player. That's why I got an extra feeling with that,' he told Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf.

'In the youth of Feyenoord we played a youth tournament at United and I said: "I will come back here one day". That has now come true and that is of course wonderful.'

Van Persie played for United from 2012 until 2015 and in his first season at the club, spearheaded the team's Premier League title triumph in Sir Alex Ferguson's final season as manager.

Tyrell Malacia is confident his Man United move will NOT harm his chances with Holland after Oranje boss Louis van Gaal advised Ajax star Jurrien Timber against Old Trafford switch over lack of guaranteed minutes

* Tyrell Malacia is confident his Man United move will not affect Holland chances
* Malacia became Erik ten Hag's first signing as United manager last week
* It comes after Louis van Gaal is understood to have convinced Jurrien Timber to turn down United due to a lack of minutes potentially harming Holland prospects
* Malacia hasn't spoken to Van Gaal but is confident of his decision to join United

Tyrell Malacia is confident his decision to join Manchester United will not jeopardise his place in the Holland national team.

Malacia made a £14.6million move from Feyenoord last week, becoming Erik ten Hag's first signing as United boss.

That distinction may have fallen to his Holland team-mate Jurrien Timber, but it's understood that Louis van Gaal - the Dutch coach and former United manager - persuaded the young Ajax defender to turn down a move to Old Trafford because a lack of game time may have harmed his international prospects.

Malacia hasn't spoken to Van Gaal over his decision and was asked if he is confident it will not have repercussions with Holland.

Tyrell Malacia is confident his Man United move will not affect his chances with Holland. Malacia became Erik ten Hag's first signing as United manager, joining in a £14.6m move

'Yes, but in the end the coach will make the decision, so we will see,' said the 22-year-old left-back after making his debut in United's 4-0 win over Liverpool in Bangkok.

'I didn't speak to him (Van Gaal). I did speak with Robin van Persie about United and his time in the Premier League: some great memories, some good stories, so it's always good, positive.

'Of course it's a big difference. I wanted this all my life, I worked hard for it, so I have to work harder now.

'I like to attack, I think that's one of the reasons why he (Ten Hag) brought me here.

'He wants to attack with the left-back and right-back. So I have to prove to everyone why I'm here.'

Malacia is ready to battle with Luke Shaw for a place in Ten Hag's side with Alex Telles and Brandon Williams the other two left-backs currently in the United squad.

'You always want to play, it's everybody's aim, so you have to work hard for it,' he added.

'There are some good left-backs here - Telles, Brandon, Luke, me - so you have to work hard and prove ourselves in training, and in the end the coach will make a decision.'

Malacia played in the second half of United's victory over Liverpool at the Rajamangala National Stadium as Ten Hag's side built on a three-goal lead in the first half to run out comfortable winners.

'I'm happy that I made my debut and we got the win,' he said. 'I already feel like I'm home. They made me feel like I'm home already, so I'm happy to be here.

'You always want to win games, especially against Liverpool. But in the end these games are to get fit, so it's another plus.

'For everybody, it's a new season, a fresh start, a new coach, so we will do everything to improve ourselves and do better than last season.'

United flew out of Bangkok straight after the game to Melbourne where they play their next two matches at the MCG against Melbourne Victory and Crystal Palace.

Axel Tuanzebe has flown home from the tour due to a personal issue, and will be replaced by teenager Will Fish.

'He is looking really good': Victor Lindelof heaps praise on his new Manchester United teammate Tyrell Malacia after the Dutch left back impresses in training

* Tyrell Malacia was Erik ten Hag's first signing as Manchester United manager
* The Dutch defender joined the Red Devils from Ajax for £13 million
* 28-year-old centre back Victor Lindelof called Malacia a 'great guy'

Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof has praised his club's recent signing Tyrell Malacia, after being impressed by the left back's personality and attitude.

Malacia became Erik ten Hag's first signing as Manchester United manager when he joined from Ajax earlier this month for £13 million.

The 22-year-old has made a couple of appearances in United's pre-season friendlies, but has mainly turned heads through his performances in training.

'He is looking really good,' Lindelof told MUTV of Malacia, 'I've talked to him a little bit, and he seems like a great guy. I think he's going to fit right in with the squad with all of the guys.

'I'm looking forward to training with him more and working with him, but he is looking really, really good.'

The Swedish defender is feeling refreshed after a summer break and is excited for the new season under ten Hag. He continued: 'It was great to have some time off over the summer and of course when I came back I felt fresh and ready and yeah it's been feeling good.

Tyrell Malacia has impressed since signing for Manchester United earlier this month. Victor Lindelof was full of praise for his new teammate and excited the new season

'Training has been very good. I think we have stepped up a lot and it's hard, like it should be in pre-season. And he [Erik ten Hag] demands a lot and I think it's been absolutely great, so yeah, a pleasure.

'Everyone is looking forward to the new season and we are doing everything we can to prepare the best we can for that game and for the rest of the season.'

United get their Premier League campaign underway against Brighton on Sunday, August 7.

'He's calm, physical, athletic... he reminds me of Patrice Evra': Rio Ferdinand lavishes praise on Man United's Tyrell Malacia after his full debut against Liverpool... and admits Luke Shaw will now struggle to get back into the team

* Tyrell Malacia made his first start for Manchester United on Monday night
* Malacia came up against Mohamed Salah and acquitted himself well
* United beat Liverpool, with Malacia delivering a standout performance
* Rio Ferdinand has now compared him to United legend Patrice Evra
* Ferdinand believes Luke Shaw will now struggle to displace Malacia

Rio Ferdinand has compared Tyrell Malacia to Manchester United legend Patrice Evra after the full back shone on his first start for the club against Liverpool on Monday.

Malacia had found himself behind Luke Shaw in the pecking order for the opening two games of the season. But after impressing off the bench against Brentford, he was given the nod to play ahead of the Englishman at Old Trafford.

The 23-year-old did not disappoint as United picked up a 2-1 victory, and Ferdinand approved of the way he dealt with Mohamed Salah, despite the Egyptian scoring a late consolation goal.

Former United defender Ferdinand can already see similarities between Malacia and Evra, who won five league titles and the Champions League during his time with the Red Devils.

'Malacia was tremendous, outstanding. The whole back four were brilliant,' Ferdinand told the Vibe With FIVE podcast.

'He reminds me of Patrice Evra in many ways. He’s athletic, he looks like a pound-for-pound strong kid. There aren’t many left-backs in European or world football in the last four or five years who have gone out of a game and kept Mohamed Salah quiet.

‘Yes, he scored a little goal but in the main of the game he kept him quiet. Salah would’ve come off that pitch thinking 'he's a tough competitor'.

'In terms of the physical duel, he was on him. In terms of getting up to him as soon as he took a touch and hitting him, he was there.

‘Whenever he did get past him the odd time in the game he has the pace to cover and get back. I thought in all elements of his game, even on the ball, he’s so calm and composed.

Tyrell Malacia impressed on his first start for Manchester United against Liverpool on Monday. He has already been compared to Patrice Evra by former United defender Rio Ferdinand. Malacia had a fascinating battle with Mohamed Salah throughout the game at Old Trafford

‘Look, we’re only a couple of games into his Manchester United career but what he’s shown so far, nothing but positive.'

Malacia looked at home in a back four alongside Diogo Dalot, Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez as Erik ten Hag made some big calls by leaving out Harry Maguire and Shaw.

Ferdinand believes Shaw now has an uphill battle on his hands to get back into the team after Malacia's eye-catching display.

'Luke Shaw’s going to have to do something to get back in this team now. In a time when confidence has been at a low ebb, he’s (Malacia) come in and been very confident immediately. It’s difficult to do that in a team like this,' Ferdinand said.

'I choose Malacia in my team': Holland legend Wesley Sneijder backs Manchester United full-back to start at the World Cup

* Tyrell Malacia has impressed since breaking into Man United's starting XI
* He was brought in to replace Luke Shaw following the brentford defeat
* Wesley Sneijder believes that he should also be starting at the World Cup

Holland legend Wesley Sneijder says he thinks Tyrell Malacia should start for the Dutch at this winter's World Cup.

Malacia has been in fine form since replacing Luke Shaw in Manchester United's starting XI following the crushing 4-0 defeat at Brentford.

The 23-year-old has been one of the standout performers as Erik ten Hag's men have turned their start to the season around, earning particular praise for his performances against Arsenal and Liverpool.

He already has five caps for his country and World Cup finalist Sneijder thinks he should be starting in Qatar.

'I choose Malacia in my team, because he comes up high and is much higher,' he said, as per Voetbal Zone. 'Then you get more into a 3-5-2 and I like that.

Malacia could line up alongside Jurrien Timber, who backed away from a United move after Netherlands head coach and ex-United boss Louis van Gaal warned he might not make his squad for Qatar if he didn’t earn ample game time.

Tyrell Malacia plans to use Gary Neville's 'nice words' as fuel to aid his development... after the ex-Man United captain lauded the left-back's 'personality, fight and spirit' during Erik ten Hag's tumultuous start

* Tyrell Malacia wants to use Gary Neville's praise as fuel to improve his game
* The Manchester United left-back joined from Feyenoord for £12.9m this summer
* He impressed off the bench last month as United were beaten 4-0 by Brentford
* Neville praised the 23-year-old's 'personality, fight and spirit' after coming on
* Malacia has since been a regular fixture at full-back under manager Erik ten Hag
* He admitted that beating Liverpool was huge in turning United's season around

In-form left-back Tyrell Malacia is keen to use praise from Manchester United legends such as Gary Neville to help fuel his development at Old Trafford.

Malacia joined the Red Devils from Feyenoord for an initial fee of £12.9million this summer and has since become an important part of Erik ten Hag's first team plans.

As Man United were humiliated with early season defeats to Brighton and Brentford, the full-back was praised for his tenacity off the bench.

Speaking earlier this month, Neville heaped praise on Malacia for the 'personality, fight and spirit' he showed after coming on as a second-half substitute in the 4-0 defeat to Brentford.

Malacia, who is currently on international duty with Holland, is eager to use Neville's acclaim as fuel to kick on.

Manchester United's Tyrell Malacia is keen to use praise from Gary Neville as fuel to improve. The ex-Red Devils star lauded the left-back's 'personality, fight and spirit' earlier this season

'Those are nice words and I will definitely take them into my development, but we have to watch my performance from game to game,' he told ESPN.

'Yes, [the Premier League is] definitely beautiful, if you get to be here. Especially now that I get to play every week.'

His hard-work off the bench earned the 23-year-old a starting spot during Man United's 2-1 triumph against Liverpool a week later.

Since the victory at Old Trafford, Malacia has been a regular fixture at left-back for Ten Hag, featuring in the Red Devils' wins against Southampton, Leicester and league leaders Arsenal ahead of former first-teamer Luke Shaw.

When asked whether Liverpool was the turning point, the 23-year-old replied: 'I think so. Of course, we didn't start the first two games well.

'The training week after that you see that you get to start in the starting eleven and you get to start against Liverpool. What more do you want?

'The intensity is a bit higher. Every week is a final. That is a big difference, but I focus on my own game.'

Tyrell Malacia 'DIDN'T agree' with Louis van Gaal's decision to trial him at centre back for Holland against Belgium... but defiant Dutch boss insists the Man United left back 'did very well' in a new role

* Manchester United's Tyrell Malacia was trialled out as a centre back by Holland
* Malacia regularly plays at left back but was redeployed by boss Louis van Gaal
* The United star has explained how he 'disagreed' with Van Gaal's judgement

Manchester United left back Tyrell Malacia has revealed he took issue with Louis van Gaal's decision to trial him at centre back in Holland's win over Belgium.

Malacia played 45 minutes as left centre back alongside Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk and Inter Milan's Stefan de Vrij.

With Bruno Martins Indi expected to miss the World Cup in Qatar, Van Gaal is seeking solutions at centre back and gave Malacia a trial in the role, not to the buy-in of the United left back.

'I went two or three times too much forward,' Malacia told reporters, as quoted by Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf.

Louis van Gaal (right) chose to trial out left back Tyrell Malacia (left) at centre back vs Belgium. Malacia (left) did 'very well' in eyes of his boss but the defender 'didn't agree' with role switch

'That is not possible in this position as quickly. But I was corrected by others.

'I didn't agree with it at the time, yes. That's right. After the game we talked about that moment for a while and then it was over.

'I'm comfortable with United at the moment. The national coach thinks that I should also be able to play in the centre of the defence. But I feel best on the left.'

Malacia looked to be slotting into a left wing-back role when he came on for Nathan Ake, with Daley Blind expected to slot into the centre back role.

But Van Gaal persisted with his plans to get a better look at Malacia in a new position and after he played his role in keeping a clean sheet for a 1-0 win, the Holland boss was left satisfied, even if there is room for improvement.

'I put Malacia in the left centre back role because [Bruno] Martins Indi is not going to make it to the World Cup squad in time due to injury,' Van Gaal told ESPN NL.

Malacia remains convinced that his best position remains wide on the left as a full-back. Holland are seeking alternative solutions at centre back ahead of the World Cup in Qatar

'I have to look at other players who can play there and I wanted to see what Malacia could do, so (Nathan) Ake was substituted.

'The defensive work he did very well, but the constructive work in the build-up could have been a lot better.'

Holland defeated Belgium 1-0 thanks to a second half strike from Van Dijk, securing their spot in the Nations League finals.

Default Re: Tyrell Malacia

'WHEN I HAVE A SETBACK, I THINK OF THEM'

So what was it like growing in up in Rotterdam? Quite a battle, to be honest, because I was always small. I liked to play football with the big boys so I had to fight and show my qualities all the time.

There were a lot of different cultures where I grew up. It always like, well sometimes it was hard, but it was always fun. I enjoyed it. I was always outside playing with my friends and family.
I did do some kickboxing, in the street where my grandma lives. They had a gym so I was there a lot but what I loved doing most was playing football.

I was good at school but it was not for me. Yet I enjoyed my time there.

I did like books but I wanted to play outside. So I would be reading but, at three o’clock, I could go out and play football. I still read now because of my mother. She always read a lot of books. Especially when I stopped school at 17, I kept reading for myself because it’s important.
I like crime books and those based on a true story. Those are the kind I really like.

When I was back in Holland, I did a project in combination with Feyenoord. I went to some schools and told them about my time and how I did at school and, you know, what reading means for me. It’s really important and can give me a better feeling.

Sometimes, you have the choice of the movie and the book and I like the book more than the movie. I can live in the book, you know, using my imagination.

But we were always out on the street and we always had a ball in the car! Everywhere we went, we played football.
My grandfather was there at every game with me, whether I played locally or outside the country. He was always there with me, along with my father and mother. Of course, without them, I wouldn’t be here. They are my big motivation every day.

My mother was always there for me. She worked a lot and my dad was also always working but still they were looking out for me, and also my grandma and grandad.

When I have a little setback, I think about them, my family, and why I am here.

I also have a group of friends, who grew up together. But I don’t call them friends anymore. They are like family for me. So they are always there too – in the good times and the bad times. They are still here.

I always kept the faith that I wanted to be a footballer.

I played for local teams, two clubs, and then I went to Feyenoord when I was eight. I went to a friendly against Liverpool with my grandad. I don’t remember that much apart from the atmosphere and everything.

Back then, I was already there inside the stands and then I was on the pitch so it was amazing. A lot of the players we good to me. There was a goalkeeper, I was really close to him, Kenneth Vermeer. He was – and still is – a good friend. I’m still in contact with other players and they always help me too.

I think true people always stay around so they always stay with me.

I wouldn’t say I’ve come a long way, I would say we as I certainly didn’t do it on my own. So we came a long way but I still have to make steps and there is a lot of space for improvement.

That is what we are going to work on.
