Manchester United AGREE £60m deal to sign Casemiro from Real Madrid on a four-year contract, with Brazilian's medical to take place over the weekend as Erik ten Hag's search for a defensive midfielder FINALLY nears an end

* Casemiro has won five Champions League crowns in nine years at Real Madrid
* Leaving for Manchester United would mean missing out on the competition
* However, he has been tempted by a four-year deal and the option of another year
* Real would look to replace the Brazilian with Newcastle's Bruno Guimaraes

Manchester United have agreed a £60million deal for Real Madrid midfielder Casemiro after a breakthrough in talks.

A medical is scheduled for the weekend and the Brazil international will sign a four-year contract at Old Trafford, with the option of a further year.

Casemiro told coach Carlo Ancelotti of his decision to join United as the two met for talks on Wednesday evening after the 30-year-old was informed by Madrid president Florentino Perez that he could choose whether he wished to stay or go.

Ancelotti values Casemiro highly and is loath to see him go as he has been instrumental to Madrid's tactical set-up, winning 18 titles during his nine seasons there.

However, the midfielder is excited by the prospect of a new challenge in the Premier League of helping to revive United's flagging fortunes while the lucrative figures on offer make economic sense for the club and player.

Casemiro has three years left on his contract with Real but following the signing of Aurelien Tchouameni from Monaco his place is under threat. Casemiro was on the bench last week with Tchouameni starting.

A United delegation travelled to the Spanish capital earlier this week to sound out Madrid's hierarchy about the prospective move and hope to have it completed by Monday.

Though Casemiro is not the profile of player United had first pursued, Erik ten Hag believes his experience and knowledge can prove invaluable to his new team.

Manchester United have agreed a £60million deal for Real Madrid midfielder Casemiro. He has spent his entire European career with Real Madrid bar a brief loan spell with Porto. Erik ten Hag has moved on to Casemiro after failing in his pursuit of Frenkie de Jong

United had wanted a ball-playing number six but Barcelona's Frenkie de Jong is more inclined to join Chelsea should he leave while the demands of Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot were considered too high.

Once Casemiro is agreed, United will focus on adding a forward, right-back and back-up goalkeeper.

They retain an interest in loaning Christian Pulisic from Chelsea but have not held further talks at this stage. Atletico Madrid's Yannick Carrasco has been discussed also this week while Ajax forward Antony and Cody Gakpo of PSV Eindhoven remain targets.

Everton goalkeeper Asmir Begovic is the latest option to be discussed as cover for David de Gea.

Southampton are pressing to sign midfielder James Garner while defender Eric Bailly looks increasingly likely to join Marseille as they discuss a loan with option to buy for the centre-back.

Madrid are reportedly considering replacements for Casemiro as his transfer to United moves closer.

Despite having signed 22-year-old Aurelien Tchouameni in the summer the club, according to Diario AS, have made Bruno Guimaraes their No 1 option.

Newcastle's Brazilian international is on a short list of names that also includes Betis midfielder Guido Rodriguez.

Betis need to sell because they are currently over their permitted squad spend and unable to register new signings Willian Jose, Luiz Henrique and Luiz Felipe.

Adding physicality will be a plus for United after they were bullied in their 4-0 loss to Brentford on Saturday night.

Ten Hag received criticism after the game for starting such a small team in West London, with the selection of 5ft 9in centre back Lisandro Martinez proving especially unpopular.

Red Devils fans will be hoping for a much improved performance when they take on Liverpool at Old Trafford on Monday.

Manchester United CONFIRM they have reached an agreement with Real Madrid over the huge £70million signing of Casemiro... with midfielder set to undergo a medical this weekend

* Manchester United have confirmed an agreement is in place to sign Casemiro
* The midfielder is set to join from Real Madrid for £70million on a four-year deal
* The signing will end the Red Devils' long-running search for a central midfielder

Manchester United have confirmed they have reached an agreement with Real Madrid for the transfer of Brazilian midfielder Casemiro.

The deal is subject to visa requirements, a medical and the agreement of personal terms, but the 30-year-old is keen to move to Old Trafford, as confirmed by Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti today.

United posted on their club website: 'We all look forward to welcoming Casemiro to Old Trafford.'

Brazilian midfielder Casemiro is close to joining Manchester United in a £70million deal. The arrival of the Brazilian midfielder will be a welcome boost to United boss Erik ten Hag. United, who have lost their first two games of the season, have been looking for a midfielder

Erik ten Hag's side have been searching for a central midfielder all summer, but have been repeatedly rebuffed by several targets.

They first chased Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong, but off-the-field issues got in the way and they were eventually forced to give up their pursuit.

Personal terms then prevented Juventus star Adrien Rabiot moving to Old Trafford, but the Red Devils have finally completed a deal, with Casemiro set to join the club officially next week.

The midfielder won five Champions League titles during his stay in Spain with Madrid

Ancelotti accepted he had lost one of his star men today, saying: 'I have spoken to him and he wants to try something new. The club is being understanding because of the type of person that Casemiro is.

'Negotiations are on-going and there is nothing decided yet but his desire to leave is clear.

'If he goes there is no doubt about the respect and affection that exists for him here. If someone as nice, and serious, and professional as Casemiro leaves then you are sad but you understand and we respect him and his decision.'

Real Madrid - who posted a thank you video dedicated to the midfielder on social media this evening - are rumoured to be interested in signing Tottenham's Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg as a replacement.

The agreement comes after Casemiro told Real Madrid on Wednesday evening that he wished to move to Erik ten Hag's team after nine glorious years in the Spanish capital.

The deal is set to be worth £70million, with the Brazilian due to sign a four-year deal at the club.

He has played over 500 professional games during his career, including 63 at international level for his Brazil.

He has also won 17 major honours, including five Champions League titles and the Copa America.

Peter Schmeichel admits he's 'SURPRISED' that Man United have signed £70m Casemiro... insisting Erik ten Hag would have been better off signing a proven Premier League player

* Casemiro is expected to join Manchester United from Real Madrid for £70m
* Peter Schmeichel has questioned the midfielder's lack of Premier League nous
* He would have signed 'someone we know can play in the Premier League'
* Manchester United are currently bottom of the Premier League and pointless

Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has revealed his 'surprise' at seeing his former club pursuing Real Madrid's Casemiro.

United have been linked with a number of central midfielders over the summer, most notably Frenkie de Jong, and now appear to be close to bringing one in.

Casemiro is set to join the club for £70 million, pending the completion of his medical and visa application.

Not everyone is convinced by the 30-year-old Brazilian, though. Peter Schmeichel told BBC Sport: 'I'm surprised that this player is being mentioned at that amount of money and on those wages, at that age, when we don't know if he can do the job.

Brazilian midfielder Casemiro is expected to join Manchester United for £70 million. Peter Schmeichel has doubts about the move, questioning his lack of Premier League nous

'Maybe sign someone who we know can play in the Premier League for now, and then next season look at someone like Casemiro next year, who is also an exciting player to watch.'

The Red Devils have generally looked outside of the Premier League for squad improvements this summer, although they were briefly interested in Youri Tielemans and Ruben Neves.

Assuming Casemiro does sign for United, he will face a tough task in making the team competitive again.

Erik ten Hag's side currently sit bottom of the Premier League after two games and are yet to pick up a point. They were heavily criticised after being beaten 4-0 by Brentford last Saturday.

United will face Liverpool at Old Trafford on Monday, as both sides look to register first Premier League wins of the season.

Casemiro is 'NOT the answer' to Man United's problems, insists Liverpool legend Didi Hamann - as he claims it will take 'years and years' of backing Erik ten Hag in the transfer market before they will challenge for big trophies

* Didi Hamann has called Man United's signing of Casemiro 'a small step forward'
* Hamann said that it will be years before United are challenging for titles again
* The Liverpool legend made 280 appearances during his seven years at Anfield
* Casemiro joined United this week after nine trophy-laden years at Real Madrid

Liverpool legend Didi Hamann has hailed Manchester United new boy Casemiro as a great player, but warned that the marquee signing will not lead to title success.

Casemiro has joined Manchester United this week for a fee of £70million from Real Madrid, after an otherwise difficult transfer window during Erik ten Hag's first season in charge of the Red Devils.

Speaking to the Mirror ahead of United's game against Liverpool at Old Trafford on Monday, Hamann explained his view that signing Casemiro will not turn Ten Hag's squad into title contenders:

'Casemiro is a great player - you only have to look at what he has won at Madrid. But he isn't going to United to win the league, is he?

'We're only two games into the season and it's already obvious that United aren't going to be anywhere near the title race. They are years behind Liverpool and Manchester City - and they are losing ground on Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal as well.'

The former Germany international, who scored in the penalty shootout of Liverpool's legendary 2005 Champions League win, insisted that it will take 'years and years' for United to return to Premier League contention:

Didi Hamann has insisted that Casemiro is not the answer to Manchester United's problems. The Liverpool Legend hailed Casemiro as a 'great player' but said it will be years before United return to title contention

'Signing Casemiro is a small step forward - but he's not the answer. It is going to take years and years of backing Erik ten Hag in the transfer market before United are challenging for the big trophies again.

'But that's been obvious since [Sir Alex] Ferguson retired - and look at how many managers they have sacked in the process.' He added.

After a tumultuous transfer window that has seen United miss out on top target Frenkie de Jong and with speculation still ongoing over the future of Cristiano Ronaldo, the signing of Casemiro will no doubt be seen as a coup for Ten Hag's side.

However, as the transfer for the Brazilian midfielder was not completed in time for Friday's registration deadline, Casemiro will not feature for his new club against Liverpool on Monday.

Default Re: Carlos Henrique Casimiro (Casemiro)

Casemiro has earned the right to decide when his trophy-laden Real Madrid career ends... there is no anger towards the Brazilian as he heads for Man United and his huge £70m transfer is seen as a final act of service

* Man United have reached an agreement to sign Casemiro from Real Madrid
* Sportsmail revealed on Wednesday night that a £70m deal is nearing completion
* But there is no bitter sentiment directed towards the midfielder out in Spain
* Madrid fans believe Casemiro has earned the right to embark on a new challenge

After eight straight trophy-laden years as Real Madrid's midfield lynchpin, Casemiro has earned the right to try a new challenge aged 30 and bringing in £70million to the club in the process is being seen as a last act of service in an incredible career in Spain.

The lack of any anger towards him, as he prepares to jump ship just two weeks before the window closes, is a measure of the esteem in which Madrid supporters hold him.

The club are not overly upset either – they do not regret letting Cristiano Ronaldo, Raphael Varane and Sergio Ramos go and they think getting a big fee for Casemiro makes the same sort of sense.

Time will tell if they are right to believe that. The last holding midfield colossus the club had was Claude Makelele and they took years to properly replace him. Casemiro could play at the top for another five years while Madrid struggle to fill the vacancy. But €80m (£68m) spent in the summer on Aurelien Tchouameni has convinced them they are well prepared.

Newcastle supporters need not be too concerned about losing Bruno Guimarães because as things stand the club has no intention of spending the money they get for Casemiro on anyone else. Tchouameni and the very highly-rated Eduardo Camavinga are the future in the middle of the pitch for the Spanish champions.

Casemiro is set to sign for Man United after they reached an agreement with Real Madrid. There is no anger directed towards the midfielder, who has won 18 titles at Madrid, in Spain

Supporters of Barcelona in particular are envious of Madrid's apparent lack of sentimentality with these players who have won everything at the club but are allowed to leave without a tear shed.

They never got a euro for Lionel Messi when he moved to Paris Saint-Germain and have Sergio Busquets, Gerard Pique and Jordi Alba on long contracts they intend to see out. It's one of the reasons why one club has sailed fairly calmly through the pandemic and the other hit an economic iceberg.

Casemiro's decision to leave has also not surprised that many people. He has played his entire European career at Real Madrid save for one season at Porto, where he had Spanish coach Julen Lopetegui.

This is not the first time that there has been a sense that he wanted another adventure. Had Zinedine Zidane taken the PSG job then he may well have ended up there.

There is no anger on his part that the club bought Tchouameni in the summer. It goes with the territory that there are two international players for every position and in recent seasons he has actually been the exception in the squad with no real back-up.

Madrid supporters believe Casemiro has earned the right to embark on a new challenge. The arrival of Aurelien Tchouameni has threatened Casemiro's place in the Los Blancos side. The Brazil international has therefore decided the time is right to move on this summer

But the arrival of Tchouameni has served as a reminder that time waits for no player. He also only has to look around the dressing room to know that once into his thirties the club become increasingly less keen to offer long deals.

Luka Modric has accepted year-on-year renewals but he was also tempted by a longer contract when Inter became interested a few seasons ago.

Clubs from other supporters have joked that from this weekend, players can play with rolled down socks and no shin pads with Casemiro gone. In truth he has never been a hatchet man. He was the master of the half-foul, enough to break play up, but often not enough for a booking and never enough for a straight red (he never received one in his Madrid career).

This is a new challenge for Casemiro – what more can he do at Real Madrid after winning the Champions League five times with them? Last season he was not at his best but he still managed to be one of Madrid's best players as they beat Liverpool in the final.

United are signing a player widely regarded as the best holding midfielder – along with Sergio Busquets – in Spain, but they will be getting so much more.

Casemiro scores goals. The imperious midfield triangle of Toni Kroos, Luka Modric and the Brazilian is often flipped in games so that it's Casemiro who is furthest forward. He only scored once last season but managed 10 in the league across the previous two campaigns.

And above all they will be getting a modest pro whose humility belies what he has become at Madrid, one-third of the greatest midfield the club has ever had. He is a player so well respected at the club that when Real Madrid got wind of United's approach earlier this week their reaction to him was: you decide.

Casemiro begs Cristiano Ronaldo to stay at Man United, as he hails his 'incredible' team-mate... and claims moving to 'biggest club in the world' ISN'T money-motivated (despite a £375k-per-week deal!)

* Casemiro is hopeful of reuniting with Cristiano Ronaldo at Manchester United
* The pair played together for a number of years in Madrid, winning multiple titles
* Ronaldo is keen to leave United this summer to play Champions League football
* Casemiro says money is not the motivation behind his move to Old Trafford
* He is set to be one of the club's highest earners on around £375,000 per week

Casemiro has pleaded with Cristiano Ronaldo to stay at Manchester United ahead of his move to Old Trafford.

The 30-year-old midfielder will join United in a deal worth up to £70million from Real Madrid and is expected to be unveiled ahead of their clash with Liverpool tonight.

Casemiro played alongside Ronaldo at Real and he's hopeful of reuniting with the 'incredible' forward in Manchester after winning a host of trophies alongside the Portuguese, including four Champions League titles.

The Brazilian bid an emotional farewell to Real Madrid during a press conference on Monday morning and he was asked about Ronaldo's situation at United.

He praised the Portuguese star, saying: 'I haven't talked to Cristiano, I hope he stays because he's one of the best players in all the time. He's incredible.

'I want to bring my values to Manchester United, everything that Real Madrid taught me, to win from day to day, from every training session. I want to experience the Premier from within. I enjoy everything I have.'

Ronaldo told the club he wanted to leave earlier this summer and missed most of pre-season, eager to exit Old Trafford for a team in the Champions League.

Casemiro is eager for 'incredible' Cristiano Ronaldo to stay at Manchester United this season. Casemiro and Ronaldo played alongside each other during their time at Real Madrid. The Brazilian midfielder is set to be one of United's highest earners alongside David de Gea. Manchester United will be hoping the signing of Casemiro will lift the mood at Old Trafford

The likes of Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid have all turned down the chance to sign him and he could now be set to stay in Manchester.

Meanwhile, Casemiro hit back at those claiming he's moving to Old Trafford for financial gain, insisting he felt his time in Madrid was over following their Champions League win in May.

'Those who think I'm leaving for money is because they don't know me. I think there are few and they don't know me. It's not for money. They're wrong. That's not the case,' he said.

'At the end of the Champions League final I had the feeling that my cycle was over. I'm honest. After the holidays, with a clear head, the feeling was the same. It wasn't that fast. I already spoke with the club as soon as it finished the Champions League.

'My wife supported me from the beginning. My family was always by my side in this decision. It was very difficult to talk to the president, but he was always honest with him.'

Casemiro is expected to be one of the highest earners at the club alongside David de Gea, with a contract worth £375,000 per week on the table.

He flew to Manchester on Monday afternoon and is set to be welcomed by United supporters this evening when they host bitter rivals Liverpool.

United fans will be relieved that their search for a new midfielder is finally complete, despite manager Erik ten Hag missing out on top target Frenkie de Jong.

The Red Devils currently sit 19th in the Premier League and will be gunning for their first points of the season against Jurgen Klopp's side, having lost to Brighton and Brentford in their first two games.

Casemiro was paraded around Old Trafford by Manchester United before Monday night's clash with Liverpool, ahead of £70million switch to Old Trafford from LaLiga titans Real Madrid.

The Brazilian is set to sign a four-year deal at United, with an option of a further year, on a deal worth £375,000-a-week, and the player was unveiled at Old Trafford before making straight for Roy Keane to embrace the legendary former skipper.

Erik ten Hag's side previously confirmed on Friday that they had reached an agreement with Los Blancos for the five-time Champions League winner, and the player bid Madridistas an emotional farewell in a press-conference on Monday.

Despite struggling to contain his emotions at Monday's farewell press-conference, the Brazilian was able to look optimistically on his future, saying: 'I am excited to develop at a big club like Manchester United.

Manchester United showcased their £70million man Casemiro from Real Madrid on Monday. The Brazilian was photographed holding a United shirt ahead of the game at Old Trafford. The deal to bring Casemiro to the club was not completed soon enough for him to feature

'I'm sure one day I'll come back. I want to give back all the love they gave me.'

And United posted a video welcoming the player on their website, with the player saying: 'The opportunity to start a new challenge at Manchester United and in the Premier League is extremely exciting.

'I have worked with many great managers in my career and, having met with Erik and heard his ideas, I can’t wait to work closely with him, his staff and my new team-mates in the coming years.

'I’m ending one beautiful journey in Madrid whilst starting another in Manchester as determined as ever to win football matches, win trophies and make our fans proud by bringing success to this great club.

'Everybody knows the history of Manchester United, the significance of the club around the world and what it means to its supporters. To represent United is an honour and I am ready to give everything to help the team achieve our ambitions.'

But naturally much of the announcement concerned his former employers in Real Madrid and his early days at the club, as he reflected: 'When I left Sao Paulo, it was clear to me that I would play in Real Madrid's first team. Here I built my life, my family.

'The greatest title I have achieved is coming to train every morning at this club. As you know, I don't like the spotlight or being in the spotlight, I'll try to speak from my heart.

'If I talk about teammates, I can't not talk about: Modric and Kroos. We've won a lot and we've really enjoyed playing together.'

After a summer spent pursuing one LaLiga star midfielder in Frenkie de Jong, United have ended up looking to the Blaugrana's arch-nemesis to secure the services of another in the shape of Casemiro.

And the Brazilian brings a wealth of experience, know-how - and perhaps more important - a winning attitude to the Red Devils' dressing room.

After 336 games and 31 goals for Los Blancos, the 30-year-old midfielder won 18 trophies in the Spanish capital, including of course five Champions Leagues, three Club World Cups and three LaLiga titles.

United's high-profile catastrophic start to the 2022-23 season has rightly brought every player under the microscope, but after seasons of criticism targeted at Scott McTominay and Fred, the purchase of a world-class holding midfielder could mark a change in fortunes at Old Trafford.

As well as joining former Real team-mates Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo at Old Trafford, the 30-year-old will also link up with his partner in the centre of the park for the national team in Fred, who fans will hope he can get the best out of.

Casemiro's former, and future, team-mate Varane took to social media to welcome in the 'warrior' midfielder.

Varane wrote: 'Many battles fought together with my warrior Case ! Welcome to Manchester, amigo @casemiro', accompanied with a sword emoji.

There was not thought to be any issue at Real, and manager Carlo Ancelotti was keen to keep hold of his midfield linchpin, but the club made it clear they would not stand in the player's way if he felt a move was best for him.

However the prospect of a long-term contract just six months out from his 31st birthday is believed to have been the biggest factor in the Brazilian's decision to join Ten Hag's side.

Real have in the past been reluctant to offer lengthy deals to ageing stars, which caused the departures of legends Ronaldo and Sergio Ramos, and even Croatia star Luka Modric is only on a year-on-year renewal basis despite his years of service.

And the Brazilian has likely already endeared himself to United fans by openly asking wantaway star Ronaldo - with whom Casemiro won four of his Champions League titles - to stay at Old Trafford.

He added: 'I haven't spoken to Cristiano, I hope he stays because he's one of the best players of all time,' Casemiro added.

'Everything I did here, I want to do there too. I want to win the league there.

'I am going through one of the best moments of my career. I feel I'm really fit, mentally I feel great, and I feel like it's a great moment to take this decision.'

Default Re: Carlos Henrique Casimiro (Casemiro)

Ten Hag didn't plan to sign a midfield 'destroyer' instead of De Jong but £70m Casemiro could be JUST what United need... so, will he be paired with creator Eriksen or Brazil partner-in-crime Fred?

* Manchester United unveiled new £70m signing Casemiro on Monday night
* Arrival from Real Madrid is a different type of midfielder to Frenkie de Jong
* The Brazilian specialises in stopping attacks and stealing the ball back
* In that regard, he could help shore up United's increasingly shaky defence
* But Casemiro isn't a ball-playing midfielder in the same mould as De Jong
* Erik ten Hag must decide who is best to partner him with in United's midfield

Let's not kid ourselves here - Manchester United did not start the summer searching for a defensive midfield 'destroyer'.

Erik ten Hag specifically set his parameters for his new club to sign a composed, ball-playing No 6 who could link back to front and get United moving forwards. That player very much resembled Frenkie de Jong.

But as their chances of tempting De Jong away from Barcelona have vanished, United have ended up with a midfielder from a very different mould.

Casemiro, who has completed a £60million transfer from Real Madrid that could rise by a further £10m, is a footballer who thrives on stopping opponents in their tracks as opposed to sparking his own team's attacks.

You suspect if the Brazilian, a serial winner both domestically in Spain and in the Champions League, hits the ground running and United turn around their dismal start, they'll claim this was part of the plan all along.

Casemiro competes with Liverpool's Sadio Mane during last season's Champions League final - the Brazilian, moving from Real Madrid to Man United, is a top class ball stealer. Casemiro has achieved notable successes with Real, including five Champions League titles. Manchester United showcased new man Casemiro from Real Madrid on Monday evening

If the bad results keep coming in the weeks ahead - they made a good start in turning it around by beating Liverpool 2-1 as he watched from the stands - there will continue to be questions as to whether United have gone out and bought the wrong kind of defensive midfielder.

However, as familiar as De Jong would have been to Ten Hag, you can't deny that Brazil international Casemiro is more of what United need right now given they've conceded six goals in two games against Brighton and Brentford.

The 30-year-old prides himself in being one step ahead of the other team. In the last three seasons of Champions League football, nobody has won the ball back more than Casemiro and nobody has made more tackles.

In the player's own words, as told to Panenka magazine in Spain last February: 'The first thing I want to see after a game is how many recoveries or interceptions I have made.

'These are my numbers; my goals, my assists. Of course, everyone likes to score, to make a nice play, but my happiness comes in recovering the ball.

'That shows how much I have helped the team.'

Given the vulnerability of United's back line - a problem dating back to last season - they urgently need a Casemiro figure who can do all of those things and take some of the pressure off Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez and Co.

The speed with which the Casemiro deal was wrapped up - Real typically need to offload one big name each summer and did so ruthlessly here with midfield successors in place - means a solution has practically dropped from the sky.

Casemiro will walk straight into Ten Hag's team because he represents an upgrade on both Fred and Scott McTominay, the other two options in that position.

What will be fascinating is how Ten Hag then reconfigures his side to make best use of him.

For years, Casemiro has slotted in alongside Luka Modric and Toni Kroos in a hugely effective and successful Real midfield.

Put it this way, Casemiro goals and assists are collector's items. He understands his role is to win back possession and to move the ball on to someone more technically proficient when it comes to a pass.

Casemiro's statistics in LaLiga matches for Real Madrid over the last three seasons

The Brazilian's record in Champions League football over the last three season with Real

Casemiro tops the charts for possession won and tackles in the Champions League (right) over the last three seasons and rates highly in LaLiga for both measures (left) as well

With that in mind, Ten Hag could play him alongside Christian Eriksen and behind Bruno Fernandes in his 4-2-3-1 formation. Eriksen is an accomplished passer and much of the defensive donkey work would be alleviated.

But Eriksen may not be able to do all of the connecting work between defence and attack and would quickly find himself doubled up on by the opposition.

Given how shambolic United looked under pressure at Brentford, that would be a recipe for disaster.

McTominay would offer plenty of work-rate and running but lacks the passing qualities of the Dane when it comes to breaking a press and moving United forward.

So it may well be that Ten Hag emulates the Brazil coach Tite and pairs Casemiro with Fred in the United engine room.

Casemiro will add presence to a midfield where Fred and Scott McTominay are often United's only options. Fred and Casemiro are likely to be Brazil's first-choice midfield pairing at the World Cup

They started alongside each other in midfield during June's friendly internationals against Japan and South Korea, hinting Tite could favour this industrious midfield for the World Cup later this year.

It's easy to see how Casemiro's ball-winning ability and Fred's boundless energy can provide an effective anchor so the likes of Neymar, Richarlison, Raphinha and Vinicius Junior can do their thing in attack.

But Fred remains an inconsistent and often frustrating figure for United.

He undoubtedly tries hard but sometimes lacks the combative streak needed to thrive in the Premier League.

Casemiro can maybe help him win the midfield battles in the tougher games, whereas against other opponents Eriksen can ensure the supply lines are always open.

Another quality of the new arrival is that he has a knack of avoiding yellow and red cards despite tackling being such a big component of his game.

Casemiro has been sent off only twice in 521 senior matches for club and country. In the rough and tumble of English football, it will be interesting to see if this largely blemish-free disciplinary record continues.

With five Champions League successes under his belt, Casemiro is unquestionably a proven winner and should help to raise standards of professionalism in the United dressing room that have been sorely lacking of late.

But then we said similar of Raphael Varane, who arrived from Real 12 months ago, and also Cristiano Ronaldo when he made his emotional return to Old Trafford last September.

Only time will tell if Casemiro galvanises this ailing United team and drags them out of their malaise or if he is dragged down by the under-achievers around him. Ten Hag and United will pray it's the former.

siapa tau Fred jadi jago lagi kalo ditandemkan dengan Casemiro seperti ditimnas, atau trio gelandang Bruno-Eriksen-Casemiro, siapa tau bisa jadi next Kroos-Modric-Casemiro-nya United

Default Re: Carlos Henrique Casimiro (Casemiro)

Casemiro is MORE than just a destroyer… Real Madrid would often flip their midfield triangle to unlock defences and the Manchester United new boy's goal record is up there with Luka Modric and Toni Kroos in recent seasons

* Manchester United's newest signing Casemiro is more than just a destroyer
* The Brazilian became an integral part of Real Madrid's all-conquering midfield
* And while he mastered his role, he has plenty more to offer at Old Trafford
* Last three seasons he got 13 goals: one less than Modric, one more than Kroos
* Casemiro can also unlock defences when he's been allowed to push forward

If Carlos Casemiro is ever asked to respond to Graeme Souness's assertion that he is 'not a great player', do not rule out the Brazilian agreeing with it.

One of the best stories about him suggests he has always known his limitations.

As an 11-year-old at a Sao Paulo trial, he spotted that too many of the young hopefuls raised their hand when the coach asked who was a centre-forward - his position - so he said he was a defensive midfielder to have a better chance of making the cut.

'I always thought it was important to think on my feet,' he told Sportsmail two seasons ago.

In a trial of around 300 hopefuls he was among the 50 selected, and holding midfielder became his position from then on.

Where Casemiro might disagree with Souness, and with all the other doubts voiced this week, is that he is just a destroyer who can do nothing more than give the ball to someone else who can play.

Yes, he was the facilitator at Madrid: the little half-foul to break up counter-attacks, the pass that sets a more naturally gifted player away, but it is a fallacy that he can do no more.

Across the last three seasons he scored 13 goals: one less than Luka Modric, one more than Toni Kroos. In all, he hit 31 in 336 games.

Madrid would often flip their midfield triangle to unlock stubborn defences, and Casemiro would find himself further forward than Kroos and Modric, showing an ability to time runs into the box and finish like a forward.

Manchester United's newest signing Casemiro is more than just a destroyer in midfield

He has trailed Modric and Kroos for assists over the last three seasons but there were still 15 passes that led to goals in that time. He certainly will not need Christian Eriksen to do the passing for him.

Roy Keane's concerns that he goes into a 'bad dressing room' are valid but there is maybe no one better in changing habits. By his own admission he thinks more like a coach than a player and has the football analysis tool Wyscout installed at home.

'I watch all the games,' he said. 'My wife gets annoyed with me sometimes, but it's my job. There is a time for family, of course, but football is my work, it's my life and I have to be permanently thinking about it.'

And he is not just watching rival players. 'I always try to read the mind of the other manager; try to work out what they are planning. Sometimes the smallest details, five metres one way or the other, can change a game,' he said.

The care he takes over conditioning is equally meticulous. Recovery sessions in hyperbaric oxygen chambers, pressure therapy boots that compress the legs to increase blood circulation, cold-water treatments: whatever it takes to gain an advantage.

Many of those practices are now commonplace but there is a sense of responsibility with Casemiro. It is his code and it runs through everything he does.

'Football was an escape route to achieve something in life. I had the good fortune to take a path that a lot of friends did not,' he told Sportsmail.

'That's why I enjoy every day of my career. Everything I do, a training session, a talk with the manager. I do it with all my heart.'

His performance in the 2018 Champions League final against Liverpool showed off his abilities. He has trailed Modric and Kroos for assists over the last three seasons but there were still 15 passes that led to goals in that time. Across the last three seasons he scored 13 goals: one less than Modric, one more than Kroos

Mother Magda was a cleaner who brought him, his sister Bianca and brother Lucas, up on her own. Getting through that trial at Sao Paulo two decades ago was a life-changer. Eventually he signed professional papers with the club aged 16 and bought his mum a house. It was only then that she realised 'Carlinhos' wasn't just playing football for fun and he was going to lead the family out of poverty.

He is a leader at club level too.

'Sometimes people might think I don't speak a lot, but in the dressing room I try to talk one-to-one with the younger players,' he says. It remains to be seen whether he can do the same at United.

He played for Madrid's youth team and that earned him a respect that he might not have at Old Trafford, even with five Champions League winners' medals.

It is also true that at almost 31 he can't possibly have the same hunger he had as a kid. 'I attack the ball as if it were a plate of food,' he once told Jorge Valdano.

But a different sort of hunger overtook him in May after winning the Champions League in Paris.

He wanted a new challenge and to be part of building something new, or at least renovating something that has been laid to waste.

'He's everybody's ally on the pitch,' his former coach Julen Lopetegui says about him. 'He helps everyone.'

He is now at a club where that need is far greater than it was at the team he has left behind.
