Re: Manchester United Tour 2014
Reds head Stateside on Tour 2014
Paul Scholes says Manchester United's Tour 2014, presented by Aon, promises to be both an enjoyable and beneficial trip for the players. The Reds legend has been involved in a number of pre-season tours to the States and he travelled to Miami this week to help launch this year's visit. While summer training can be intense for the players, Scholes insists the US provides the perfect backdrop with top-class facilities in some exciting cities. "The visits to the States have always been great and it's a country we always enjoy going to," Paul told us. "The facilities and stadiums are great and we always get really well looked after – the people can't do enough for you. We've got eight million fans in America so to be able to play games in front of them is fantastic." The Reds could face some stern tests as one of eight teams involved in the International Champions Cup. Also involved are Real Madrid, Internazionale, AS Roma, AC Milan, Manchester City, Olympiacos and Liverpool, and Scholes insists playing against strong opposition will further aid the squad's preparations for the new campaign. "The players prefer playing top-class teams. There are a lot of massive teams involved and that will be something all the players and staff will look forward to," he added. "Pre-season is the time when you get your fitness, the plan is always to get as fit as you can and the manager will use as many players as he can on tour to make sure everybody is ready for that first game of the season." United face Italian giants
• United to play AS Roma and Inter Milan during the club’s Tour 2014, presented by Aon Manchester United has today announced that the team will play AS Roma and Inter Milan during the club’s Tour 2014, presented by Aon. Re: Manchester United Tour 2014
09/06/2014 10:37 - ManUtd.com, Gemma Thompson Rafael: Roma test will help us Rafael says the players' fitness during Tour 2014, presented by Aon, will be aided by playing in Denver when Manchester United take on AS Roma. The 26 July fixture forms part of the International Champions Cup and will be played at Sports Authority Field which stands at 5,280 feet above sea level. Rafael has played at a similar altitude before and says it's definitely a challenging experience. Speaking to ManUtd.com before the end of the season, the Brazilian said: "It’s so, so hard!*When people watch on TV they must think ‘ah it’s okay, it’s not difficult,’ but I tell you it’s hard. You can’t breathe properly. "It will definitely really help us with our fitness. Just look at Antonio [Valencia]. From playing in Quito [Ecuador's capital], you can see how much energy he has on the pitch and all the running he does – that’s how it helps. So playing at high altitude in Denver will be good for us." While Rafael unfortunately missed out on selection for the World Cup in his native Brazil, it means he can focus fully on being ready for the new era at Old Trafford, beginning with next month's trip to the United States. The first few fixtures under incoming manager Louis van Gaal will also include meetings with European Cup holders Real Madrid and the Champions League winners of 2010, Inter Milan.* "It will be fantastic to play against such historic teams during our tour. Everyone will want to play in those matches," added Rafael, who'll turn 24 shortly before the trip. "Pre-season is so important. It means everything to your season – if it goes well and you have a good pre-season it can mean you are set up for the rest of the season with your fitness. "It’s always good to have everyone together and to train hard and enjoy the trip as well. We always look forward to going to the States." |
