Re: [LC] Manchester United 2-0 Hull City
Manchester United 2-0 Hull City - PLAYER RATINGS: Juan Mata shines as Jose Mourinho's side take advantage into EFL Cup semi-final second leg
* Manchester United beat Hull City 2-0 thanks to Juan Mata's second half goal * Juan Mata scored the opening goal of the match at Old Trafford on Tuesday * Marouane Fellaini added a second late on for the hosts against Hull * Spanish midfielder Mata shone for United as he was lively throughout Manchester United beat Hull City 2-0 on Tuesday night in their first leg EFL Cup semi-final clash. Juan Mata opened the scoring at Old Trafford after latching onto Henrikh Mkhitaryan's header to poke home from close range. Hull had chances of their own to equalise but United scored another through Belgian international Marouane Fellaini. Here, Sportsmail runs the rule over the performances of both sets of players. David De Gea – 6 A predictably quiet night though he looked beaten when Diomande hit the post. Made regulation saves from Maguire, Snodgrass and Hernandez and enjoyed having his name chanted by the Stretford End Antonio Valencia - 6.5 An important attacking asset for United these days. Ventured forward more and more as the game went on and his cross helped set up the all-important first goal Chris Smalling - 6 Did little wrong but could have played with slippers on most of the time. Took the captain's armband after Rooney departed Phil Jones – 6.5 Just the type you want in the wall when facing a Snodgrass free-kick. Did his job by putting his body on the line as you'd expect Matteo Darmian – 6.5 The Italian was a regular outlet from left-back. After only two minutes he set up a big chance for Mata, establishing the pattern of the game. Excellent cross for Fellaini's late second goal. Ander Herrera - 6 Not quite his normal self without Carrick alongside him but some of his interplay with Mata got big applause inside Old Trafford Paul Pogba – 6.5 Played deeper than in recent weeks and wasn't as effective. But still produced moments of quality including a 25-yard piledriver that Jakupovic struggled to keep out and a free-kick against the post Juan Mata - 8 United's best player even without his goal. Denied by Jakupovic early, set up two great chances for Mkhitaryan and was rewarded when he fired in the Armenian's flick on to score early in the second. Substituted. Juan Mata pokes home from close range to help Manchester United claim victory Wayne Rooney - 6 His best chance of becoming United's outright record goalscorer came and went when he fired a wide from close range. His link-up play was crisp enough though. Substituted Wayne Rooney missed the opportunity to become United's top scorer on Tuesday Henrikh Mkhitaryan - 7 Ironic that his biggest contribution came with his head, a nod-down for Mata's goal. His pace and quick feet troubled Hull but lacked his usual composure in front of goal with two missed chances. Substituted. Marcus Rashford – 6 Found it difficult to fill Zlatan Ibrahimovic's boots at centre-forward. Denied by a last-ditch tackle by Meyler, some thought it was a penalty, and his best effort was a shot from outside the box. Substitutes Anthony Martial (for Rooney 59) 6 – Had a couple of chances to find the net Jesse Lingard (for Mkhitaryan 71) 5.5 – Little chance to make an impact Marouane Fellaini (for Mata 79) 6.5 – Got a morale-boosting cheer on arrival and scored with towering header Subs unused: Romero (Gk), Fosu-Mensah, Blind, Carrick, Fellaini Goals: Mata 56, Fellaini 87 Manager Jose Mourinho 6.5 – His decision to bring on Fellaini brought late dividends and he milked it with a big hug Code:
