Being booed by his own supporters does not bode well for Manchester United captain Harry Maguire... the England defender got a rude awakening in Melbourne which must be a concern for player and club

* Harry Maguire was booed by his own fans in Manchester United's friendly
* The defender got a rude awakening from United's supporters in Melbourne

If Harry Maguire thought it would be easy to make a fresh start at Manchester United under Erik ten Hag, the England defender got a rude awakening in Melbourne.

Maguire was booed every time he touched the ball in the first half of a 3-1 win over Crystal Palace at the MCG, which must be a concern for the player and his club considering the majority of fans in a 76,499 crowd were United supporters.

Club sources blamed the 'pantomime booing' on a minority of local fans, saying that most of the crowd were behind Maguire.

But after a year in which he lost his form and place at United, was jeered playing for England at Wembley and then had to evacuate his family from their Cheshire home following a bomb threat, this does not bode well for the United captain.

'I heard it as well,' said Maguire's team-mate Donny van de Beek. 'I didn't know what happened. But I think Harry was playing really well.

'He was aggressive and he won so many balls so that means he has a big personality. I like to see it.'

Ten Hag has given Maguire a vote of confidence by keeping him as captain but it came with a warning that his place is not guaranteed in the face of competition following the £55.3million signing of centre back Lisandro Martinez.

Aside from the late red card for teenage defender Will Fish, Maguire's reception in Melbourne was the only setback for United as Ten Hag's first-choice team went three goals ahead after Anthony Martial scored the first and then had a hand in the other two for Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho.

Martial has scored three goals in as many games on tour and is emerging as a strong contender to lead United's attack at the start of the season in the continued absence of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Joel Ward headed a late goal for Palace after Ten Hag had changed all 10 outfield players but United have now won all three games under the Dutchman with an aggregate score of 11-2.

At one point towards the end, Ten Hag was picked up by a pitch-side microphone shouting 'what the f*** are you doing?' as goalkeeper David de Gea launched the ball downfield when young substitute Charlie Savage did not offer him the option of a short pass.

United's new manager is clearly a hard taskmaster. 'I think it's pre-season and we are happy with the improvement we see but also you see a lot of work to do,' said Ten Hag. 'We scored some wonderful goals. The second especially was a great goal.'

United play their final tour game against Aston Villa in Perth on Saturday.

'He was aggressive, he got so many balls': Donny van de Beek leaps to the defence of Manchester United team-mate Harry Maguire after club captain was booed by some fans during club's pre-season win over Crystal Palace

Donny van de Beek has defended his Manchester United teammate Harry Maguire after the club's captain was booed by supporters in Melbourne.

Maguire was jeered when the teams were read out and again whenever he touched the ball during an awkward opening 30 minutes for the England international.

The centre-back endured a difficult campaign last year under both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and interim manager Ralf Rangnick, often being on the receiving end of much of the blame during a dismal season for the club.

However, speaking after the game, Van de Beek responded to the jeers that came from parts of the 76,000-strong crowd by stating that he thought his captain had had a good game and did not deserve such a reaction.

Donny van de Beek leaped to the defence of his captain after the game saying that he thought he performed well

'I heard as well. I didn't know really what happened,' the midfielder, who spent part of last season on-loan at Everton, said.

He added: 'But I think if I saw the game today I think Harry was playing really well.

'He was aggressive, he got so many balls, so that means he has a big personality.

'He has a lot of experience, so I think that's positive what he [showed], his performance today.'

Ten Hag will hope that such a reaction does not follow United for the remainder of their pre-season. They still have games to come against Aston Villa, Atletico Madrid and Rayo Vallecano to come.

Nevertheless, another win - the club's third from as many games this pre-season - continued United's encouraging start under manager Ten Hag.

Supporters will be particularly encouraged by the three goal scorers in United's win, with Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho all finding the net.

They were three players that struggled throughout last season, with Martial eventually going on loan to Sevilla while Rashford and Sancho both suffered from injuries and spells out of the team.

The Crystal Palace game marked the club's last in Melbourne, and penultimate in Australia, before they move on to Perth, where they will face Aston Villa at the Optus Stadium.

They return to Oslo to face Atletico Madrid before Ten Hag will experience a game at Old Trafford for the first time when his side line up against Rayo Vallecano.

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire 'given court date for hearing to clear himself' over conviction of assaulting a police officer and attempted bribery while on holiday with family in Mykonos in 2020

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has been given a date for a hearing where he can try to clear himself over a brawl that took place while he was on holiday.

As reported by the Sun, the appeal is set for June 7 next year and is expected to be held on the Greek island of Syros, near Mykonos.

Maguire was involved in a bust-up with police in Mykonos back in August 2020.

The England international and his brother Joe, were found guilty of assaulting an officer and attempted bribery, and were handed a suspended prison sentence of 21 months and 10 days.

The 29-year-old has since however maintained his innocence despite the conviction.

Maguire said at the time: 'I have instructed my legal team with immediate effect to inform the courts we will be appealing.

Harry Maguire has been given a court date next summer over his holiday bust-up in 2020. Maguire was handed a suspended prison sentence of 21 months and 10 days for assaulting an officer and attempted bribery while he was on holiday in Mykonos back in 2020. Next year's court date means he can focus on playing for his club and country this season

'I remain strong and confident regarding our innocence in this matter. If anything, myself, family and friends are the victims.'

Maguire and his brother got involved in the brawl after two men allegedly tried to inject their sister Daisy with a date rape drug.

Daisy collapsed, triggering a brawl and police rushed to the scene.

With the appeal set to be held next year, it means that the United defender is free to focus on his club's season as well as this winter's World Cup in Qatar.

Maguire had been withdrawn from Gareth Southgate's England squad in the immediate aftermath of his conviction, but quickly won his place back in the team.

'It was a NIGHTMARE start': Harry Maguire concedes Erik ten Hag's Man United reign couldn't have began any worse than it did after falling 2-0 behind to Brighton before half-time... as captain admits Red Devils are 'far too open'

* Harry Maguire admitted Manchester United were 'far too open' against Brighton
* The Red Devils lost 2-1 to the Seagulls during Erik ten Hag's first match in charge
* Maguire admitted that United needed to be more creative in the second-half
* The captain insisted: 'It's something we need to address or it'll keep happening'

Harry Maguire admitted that Manchester United suffered a nightmare start to the season as manager Erik ten Hag lost his first Premier League game in charge.

United were shocked 2-1 by Brighton, who celebrated their first win at Old Trafford thanks to two first-half goals from Pascal Gross.

Wantaway Cristiano Ronaldo came on in the second-half and the Red Devils clawed one back through an Alexis Mac Allister own goal in the 68th minute, but Ten Hag's side were ultimately unable to break Brighton down again and find an equaliser.

Maguire was disappointed that the team could not hand the new Dutch manager his first win at Old Trafford, especially considering their poor form last campaign.

'Everyone knew the task,' he said. 'We had a bad season last season. We've got a new manager trying to put his philosophy on the team but when we don't get it right we look far too open.

'It's great to have Lisandro Martinez at the club. We have competition for places at centre-back. We've not played much together and in that first period we weren't on the same wavelength.

Harry Maguire admitted that Man United 'looked far too open' in their 2-1 defeat to Brighton. It was a nightmare start for Erik ten Hag as Man United found themselves 2-0 down at half-time. The England star was booked for his skirmish with Leandro Trossard after the break

'Centre-back partnerships are built over time and we will get a lot better and keep clean sheets.'

He added: 'We went into the game positive, we had a good pre-season and it was the worst possible start to be 2-0 down at half-time at Old Trafford.

'We got a goal back but we huffed and puffed a bit and it's a bad start for us.

'We started pretty well and on the front foot and as a team we had control. Then we conceded the first goal and that knocked us badly.

'We need to look at not letting that first goal set us back as much as it did. It was a nightmare start to be 2-0 down at half-time.'

Unlocking Brighton's defence in the second-half proved a real challenge for United and Maguire admitted the team needed to be more creative in fashioning goal scoring opportunities.

He said: 'We spoke about getting the next goal [at half-time]. I think in the second half you saw good parts to our game but overall we didn't do enough.

'We had a lot of pressure and a lot of ball but we need to be a bit more creative and we need to improve on that.

'It's something we need to address or it'll keep happening. The first goal felt like a big blow to all 11 of our players.'

Axed Manchester United captain Harry Maguire WILL fight for his future and won’t push for a move amid Chelsea interest... but Erik ten Hag has his doubts and the defender's days at Old Trafford could be numbered

* Harry Maguire was axed by Erik ten Hag for Manchester United versus Liverpool
* The central defender is not pushing for a move and will fight for his place back
* Ten Hag does have doubts over the centre back and his days could be numbered

Harry Maguire is determined to fight for his Manchester United career despite renewed doubt over his role under Erik ten Hag.

As revealed by Sportsmail last week, Maguire was dropped to the bench for Monday night's clash with Liverpool, which United won 2-1.

The victory, Ten Hag's first as Old Trafford manager, sparked fresh uncertainty about the central defender's future as Raphael Varane impressed in his place.

As revealed on Saturday, Chelsea have checked on Maguire's availability as a back-up option for their No 1 target, Wesley Fofana of Leicester.

But as it stands, the England defender is not for sale, with Ten Hag insisting he remains in his plans. And Maguire is fully focused on winning back his place in the United starting XI.

Harry Maguire is determined to fight for his place at Manchester United after he was dropped. Erik ten Hag has his doubts over Maguire and the centre back's days may well be numbered. Maguire is under no illusion that he is fighting to salvage his Man United career right now

When Maguire next reports for training at Manchester United's Carrington HQ he'll be acutely aware of what lies ahead.

He isn't burying his head in the sand, he isn't brushing off the events of Monday night as a one off. He knows he is fighting for his United career.

Maguire will accept that challenge; a man from humble upbringings, he knows no other way.

You don't become England's first-choice central defender without overcoming a few unexpected hurdles.

More of England and the World Cup later - because, right now, Maguire's sole focus is on resuscitating a United career that is stuttering.

The subject of intense criticism from within United's fanbase for months, as well as being booed whilst playing for England, it's been an emotionally draining period for Maguire.

Physically, Maguire's been through the wringer too. We forget he played more football than any other player on the planet during the 2019-20 season.

Perhaps it's all catching up with the 29-year-old. Perhaps a spell out of the team, out of the firing line, will help refresh a career that is in need of reinvigoration.

Of course, Maguire won't be seeing it that way right now - he just wants his place back in the United team.

The euphoria of Monday night will live long in the memory for anyone of United red.

The same goes for Maguire, who was as happy as anyone that the Erik ten Hag era finally showed signs of life with victory over arch enemies Liverpool. Yet the fact United achieved it all without their captain may well have opened up a host of insecurities.

As predicted by Sportsmail on Saturday morning, Maguire was left out of the starting XI for the clash against Jurgen Klopp's side.

It remains to be seen whether his omission was a simple case of squad rotation or whether it signals the start of something much more damaging for Maguire.

The result, the manner of performance and, more pertinently, the apparent rapport between the new-look central defensive partnership of Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane should provide Maguire with cause for concern.

Behind the scenes there is a sense that Ten Hag, much like Pep Guardiola has done successfully at Manchester City, will rotate his defenders. Maguire will hope that is the plan.

Indeed, privately it is understood Ten Hag has told Maguire that he is still counting on him playing a key role this season.

But who could blame Ten Hag - at least for the time being - for sticking with the Martinez/Varane combination following the success of Monday night.

For months now, Maguire has been the subject of criticism from fans. There is a growing sense behind the scenes that Ten Hag will continually rotate defenders. Maguire must remember that there are plenty of matches to play across all competitions. With the 2022 World Cup approaching, Maguire knows he needs to be playing regularly

With that said, any assertions that Ten Hag does not rate Maguire should be discounted. The Dutchman did select Maguire as his captain earlier this summer after all.

However, it is clear there are emerging concerns from the United head coach about exactly where Maguire is positioned in his blueprint.

Indeed, sources have indicated to Sportsmail that Ten Hag gave consideration to leaving Maguire on the bench for the 4-0 loss to Brentford before ultimately deciding against a change.

As we now know, the United boss could no longer resist the temptation.

Maguire should take comfort in the fact there are plenty games to play. You'd expect the Carabao Cup, Europa League and FA Cup to provide Maguire with an opportunity to feature in his fair share of matches this season.

Injuries and suspensions should also hand Maguire a chance to play. Indeed, Varane's first season at United was beset by injury problems.

But all that sounds like playing second fiddle and why would someone of Maguire's profile be satisfied with that?

For now, it doesn't appear that the defender has much choice.

With just a week left to go of the transfer window, United are adamant Maguire is not for sale.

That stance was relayed to Chelsea officials last week when they enquired about Maguire's availability as a potential fall-back option to their first-choice central defensive target Wesley Fofana.

Whether that position changes remains to be seen.

You can see why Chelsea would be keen. Maguire has excelled playing in a back-three at international level, a system Blues boss Thomas Tuchel prefers.

His performance for England in a back-three at World Cup 2018 propelled him to stardom. Twelve months later he was joining United for £80million - a world record fee for a defender.

Once again the World Cup is approaching and Maguire can expect to play an integral role for his country.

But his situation at Old Trafford creates unwanted uncertainty for Gareth Southgate in the lead up to a tournament England believe they have a realistic opportunity of winning.

Yet with all that said; Maguire has only missed one match - though the repercussions of United's win without their skipper are inescapable.

All that that is out of Southgate's control - though the England boss's unwavering loyalty to Maguire indicates the defender has nothing to worry about.

The question is: will Ten Hag show Maguire the same level of devotion.

Paul Scholes says Harry Maguire will not be able to get back into the team unless Raphael Varane or Lisandro Martinez get INJURED as Erik ten Hag opts to go without his captain for second week running

* Manchester United recorded their first win of the season on Monday evening
* Erik ten Hag's side travel to Southampton in Saturday's lunchtime fixture
* Ten Hag opted to once again leave out Harry Maguire and Cristiano Ronaldo

Paul Scholes has said Harry Maguire will be unable to get back into the Manchester United team unless Raphael Varane or Lisandro Martinez get injured.

Erik ten Hag has named an unchanged side from Manchester United's win over Liverpool on Monday night.

The Dutchman's side travel to Southampton in the Saturday lunchtime fixture with the club bidding to win back-to-back games after enduring an abysmal start to the campaign.

Speaking on BT Sport ahead of United's Saturday fixture, Scholes said of Maguire's chances of getting back into the starting XI: 'Well not unless Raphael Varane or one of the others gets injured, that’s the only way he gets back into this team.

Erik ten Hag has once again left out Harry Maguire as the club bid to win back-to-back games. Erik ten Hag undertook one of the first major decisions of his United career with Monday's decision to exclude Harry Maguire and Cristiano Ronaldo from his starting XI

'That is something he has to hope for. But it will do him good if the team goes on a winning streak.'

Scholes added that Maguire will benefit from a period out of the team.

'It will be tough for him because no player likes to be left out. But I think it’s the right thing and it will do him good in the long run,' he said.

'If United can get a six, seven [or] eight game run going when they’re winning games and he comes back into a confident team because he will still get a lot of games.

'Varane with his injury problems, the League Cup, the Europa League games - he won’t want to play in those but if United can get a run of form going, it will be easier to integrate him.'

Ten Hag's decision to leave out Maguire and Cristiano Ronaldo signals one of first major decisions he has taken as United boss.

Peter Crouch highlighted the much improved performance against Liverpool at Old Trafford and said that every player 'went up a gear'.

'Every single United player against Liverpool went up a gear. The Brentford game was so disappointing, the way they bounced back from that with every single player’s level going up,' he said.

'Anyone can get up for a game against Liverpool at Old Trafford but it’s in these types of games that thew questions have been asked of United.'

Harry Maguire 'is reassured by Gareth Southgate that his England World Cup place is secure' despite Man United boss Erik ten Hag dropping the defender to the bench following shaky start to the season

* Harry Maguire lost his place in the Man United back line after 4-0 Brentford loss
* Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane have since formed a strong partnership
* But Maguire has been told by Gareth Southgate his England place is still secure
* That will come as a relief with the Qatar World Cup approaching in November
* Maguire will expect to be involved in upcoming pair of Nations League games

Gareth Southgate 'has told Harry Maguire his England place isn't under threat' despite Erik ten Hag dropping him from Manchester United's side.

The United captain started their first two Premier League games of the season but lost his place to Lisandro Martinez after the 4-0 loss at Brentford.

Summer arrival Martinez and Raphael Varane have since formed a solid central defensive partnership as United have won their three subsequent games.

It has left Maguire warming the bench and facing an uphill battle to win his place back, hardly ideal with the World Cup in November fast approaching.

Harry Maguire 'has been reassured by Gareth Southgate his England place is secure' despite losing his spot in Manchester United's defence. Maguire has been demoted to the bench by Erik ten Hag following a shaky start

However, according to The Sun, England manager Southgate has already contacted the 29-year-old and told him his place won't be affected by a lack of game time for his club.

They report that in Southgate's view, Maguire has plenty of credit in the bank from his 46 previous England appearances and that he will be part of his plans for Qatar.

Maguire is likely to be called up by Ten Hag sooner or later given United begin their UEFA Europa League campaign against Real Sociedad on Thursday, meaning a more intense schedule.

Southgate has moved to reassure Maguire he has plenty of credit in the bank with England

United host Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon prior to that.

The defender will hope to feature for England when they conclude their UEFA Nations League campaign with matches against Italy in Milan on September 23 and against Germany at Wembley three days later.

They open their World Cup campaign against Iran on November 21.

Maguire was excellent as Southgate's England side reached the final of the European Championship last year but his form slumped alarmingly last season.

Default Re: Harry Maguire

Giorgio Chiellini says he feels SORRY for Harry Maguire because Man United 'require too much of him just because they paid £80m' - with the Italian icon hailing under-fire England centre back as a 'good player'

* Harry Maguire lost his Man United place after a poor start to the season
* Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez quickly formed a good partnership
* Gareth Southgate has retained faith with Maguire in his latest England squad
* Italian great Giorgio Chiellini has sprung to the defence of his fellow defender
* Chiellini says it isn't Maguire's fault he is burdened with £80million price tag

Under-pressure Harry Maguire has found an unlikely ally in the form of Italy great Giorgio Chiellini, who believes too much is expected of the England defender.

Maguire has lost his place in Manchester United's defence after early season struggles, with manager Erik ten Hag axing his captain to create a partnership between Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez.

The 29-year-old, regularly a target of criticism from fans, is however trusted by England boss Gareth Southgate and was included in the latest squad despite losing his United place.

And veteran defender Chiellini, who retired from international football after this summer's Finalissima against Argentina, has come to Maguire's defence.

'I am sad for Maguire's situation because he is a good player,' Chiellini told The Times.

Harry Maguire lost his place in the Manchester United defence after a poor start to the season. But the England defender has found an ally in Italian defensive legend Giorgio Chiellini

'They require too much of him. Just because they paid £80million for him, he has to be the best in the world every match? It's not right.

'The value of the market is dependent on many aspects you can't control. It's not your fault.

'Him and [John] Stones are a good duo. OK, Maguire maybe is not Rio Ferdinand but he's good enough.

'With this situation it's not helping [England] to do the best. If you want to win the World Cup, it's impossible to do it with some problems in the key players, and for sure Maguire is one of the key players in the team.'

Maguire is likely to be involved when England play Italy in the UEFA Nations League in Milan's San Siro on Friday night.

The Three Lions conclude their Nations League group at home to Germany on Monday night and realistically need to win both matches to avoid relegation to League B of the competition.

Chiellini, 38, captained Italy to glory at the European Championship last year, when they defeated England on penalties at Wembley.

He left Juventus over the summer to move to Major League Soccer team Los Angeles FC, helping them win the Western Conference by a considerable margin.

New United manager Erik ten Hag backed his captain during pre-season but then dropped him. Maguire retains the trust of England manager Gareth Southgate with the World Cup ahead

Maguire started United's first two matches of the season but a 2-1 home loss to Brighton and a 4-0 thrashing at Brentford saw him lose his place.

Ten Hag's side subsequently won their next four Premier League fixtures with a central defensive partnership of Varane and Martinez.

Maguire played in the UEFA Europa League group opener against Real Sociedad, which United lost 1-0 before returning to the bench for the 2-0 win over Moldovan team FC Sheriff.
