Default Re: [UEL] Anderlecht vs Manchester United

GET TO KNOW UNITED'S OPPONENTS ANDERLECHT

Manchester United make the trip to Brussels to face RSC Anderlecht in the Europa League on Thursday, but who are the Belgian side and what can the Reds expect in the quarter-final tie?

Who are they? Founded in 1908, Anderlecht play their football at the Constant Vanden Stock Stadium in Brussels, which first opened in 1983 and holds 21,845 fans for European matches. But the club are in the process of switching to a bigger home and are due to move to the 60,000-capacity Eurostadium, which will also be the home of the Belgium national team and host fixtures at Euro 2020, when construction work is completed in 2019. Anderlecht are the most successful Belgian club in history, with more European trophies (five) and Belgian top-flight title wins (33) than any other team. Their full name is Royal Sporting Club Anderlecht and their nickname is the 'Purple and Whites', which reflects the colours of the club's traditional home kit.

How did they get here? Anderlecht's European journey this season began as early as July in the Champions League but there was disappointment at the first hurdle as FC Rostov, whom the Reds beat last month to reach the last eight of the Europa League, claimed a 4-2 win over two legs in the third qualifying round tie. It meant the Belgians dropped into the secondary European competition and faced a play-off tie against Czech side Slavia Prague, which they easily navigated with a 6-0 aggregate win to reach the group stages. In Group C, they were pitted against German outfit Mainz 05, Gabala FC of Azerbaijan and French side Saint-Etienne, the latter of whom the Reds knocked out in the Round of 32 stage of the competition. Anderlecht progressed to the knockout stages in second place with a respectable record of 11 points from six games – winning three, drawing two and losing just once. They looked to be heading out in the Round of 16 after Russian outfit Zenit Saint Petersburg overturned a 2-0 first-leg defeat to lead 3-0 in the second leg, before a dramatic late header from Kiese Thelin took Anderlecht through on away goals. Apoel Nicosia of Cyprus presented a tough challenge in the last round but two 1-0 wins saw the Belgians advance to their first European quarter-final in 20 years.

What's their current form like? After narrowly finishing top of the newly-named Belgian First Division A in the regular league season, two points ahead of fierce rivals Club Brugge, Anderlecht have begun the Championship play-offs campaign, where the top six teams in the division play each other twice to determine who will qualify for next season’s Champions League and Europa League respectively. They've got off to a good start with four points from the first two games, a 2-1 win away at Zulte Waregem followed by a goalless draw at home to Gent last weekend. They have also fared well on home soil in Europe in recent months, winning five of their last six games.

Who's their boss? Anderlecht’s manager is Rene Weiler, who is in his first season in charge after replacing Albanian coach Besnik Hasi last summer. The 43-year-old spent his first two years of coaching with German second-tier outfit FC Nurnberg before arriving in Belgium. The former defender, who was capped once by Switzerland, established his reputation in his home country with Schaffhausen and Aarau.

Who are the players to look out for? Considered one of the brightest young prospects in world football, 19-year-old Belgian playmaker Youri Tielemans seems destined for the very top, with a number of top European clubs reportedly tracking his progress. An intelligent all-round midfielder with an excellent range of passing, Tielemans was voted Belgian Young Player of the Year in 2013 and 2014, and made his senior international debut last November. Captain Sofiane Hanni is one of the club's more creative players, with the French-born Algerian notching several assists already in this season's competition, and he was last season's Belgian Footballer of the Year after scoring an impressive 17 goals from midfield for former club KV Mechelen. The highly-rated Nicolae Stanciu became the most expensive signing made by a Belgian club when joining Anderlecht last summer from Steaua Bucharest in his native Romania, where he made a name for himself as a technically-sound player with an eye for goal, and is another player the Reds must be wary of.

Have they faced the Reds before? Well, Anderlecht were the opposition on a landmark occasion for the Reds in our first-ever European game back in September 1956, as goals in either half from Dennis Viollet and Tommy Taylor gave Matt Busby's team a 2-0 win in front of 35,000 fans at the former Emile Verse Stadium. The second leg of the preliminary round tie, however, was a memorable experience which went down in history as a rampant United annihilated the Belgians with a 10-0 win at Manchester City's former Maine Road ground, which remains the Reds' biggest competitive victory to date, to storm into the first-round proper of the European Cup.

What's their record like against English teams? It would be fair to say Anderlecht have a mixed record historically when it comes to facing opponents from England in Europe. The aforementioned demolition by the Reds aside, the Belgians have only won seven of their 32 games against English teams, drawing five and losing 20. They have also never tasted victory on English soil on 15 previous trips – including, most recently, a 2-1 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane in the Europa League group stages last season, having won by the same scoreline at home. However, Anderlecht have faced English opponents three times in major finals and achieved one notable triumph in their home city of Brussels, beating West Ham United 4-2 in a thrilling contest at Heysel Stadium. The others ended in disappointment: a 4-3 defeat by Arsenal over two legs in their first ever European final in 1970 and an agonising loss on penalties against Spurs in the 1984 UEFA Cup showpiece, following a 2-2 draw.

What's their overall history in Europe? Anderlecht have a chequered recent history in European competitions but enjoyed plenty of success during arguably the most successful period in the club's history, claiming five trophies on the continental stage between 1974 and 1984. During that memorable decade, the Purple and Whites won two European Cup Winners' Cups, two European Super Cups and one UEFA Cup. Meanwhile, Anderlecht’s last European quarter-final was in the 1996/97 UEFA Cup, where they lost to Inter Milan, just six years after being eliminated at the same stage by another Serie A side in Roma.

Manchester United supporters face arrest if they approach Anderlecht's ground without a match ticket

* Manchester United face Anderlecht in the Europa League on Thursday night
* Bags will not be permitted in the ground amid strict anti-terrorism measures
* Borussia Dortmund's team bus was rocked by three explosion on Tuesday
* Brussels is still on high alert following last year's terror attacks in the capital

Manchester United fans face being arrested if they try to get near Anderlecht's ground without a match ticket amid heightened security around Thursday's Europa League quarter-final.

Supporters have also been warned that bags will not be permitted inside the Constant Vanden Stock Stadium as part of strict anti-terrorism measures implemented around Brussels.

The Belgian capital has been on high alert since March 22 last year when co-ordinated attacks in the city killed 32 people and injured hundreds of others.

It means that all public events are subject to enforced security, including army presence, extra security sweeps and controls.

Thursday's first leg involving United and Anderlecht will come under even greater scrutiny following the bomb attack on the Borussia Dortmund team bus in Germany on Tuesday night that injured their defender Marc Bartra and forced the postponement of the Champions League quarter-final tie with Monaco.

Fans face being arrested if they approach the Constant Vanden Stock Stadium without a ticket

A statement on United's website warned the 1,250 fans expected to attend the game that they will face stringent security measures.

It read: 'Fans without tickets are being told not to travel as they will not get into the stadium. Belgian police advise that all supporters without tickets on the territories of Anderlecht will be administratively arrested, by decision of the Mayor.

'No bags at all will be permitted inside the stadium, including handbags. Unfortunately there are no storage facilities at the stadium, so we advise you not to travel with bags.

'This strict policy has emanated from concerns over terrorist incidents and will be very strictly enforced. Medical supplies will be allowed into the stadium after checks.'

At Anderlecht's pre-match press conference on Wednesday afternoon, an Anderlecht spokesman said that the club and security forces are 'prepared' for the game.

Asked how the incident in Dortmund might affect the players, forward Massimo Bruno: 'We have to live with that. We are footballers and we must go on playing. We have to think of something and stick together. Everything will be safe tomorrow.'

Manchester United's Europa League tie due to a 'bad feeling' in his ankle says Jose Mourinho ahead of first leg against Anderlecht on Thursday

* Wayne Rooney trained with Manchester United team mates on Wednesday
* However he is out of the game vs Anderlecht on Thursday with an ankle problem
* Manager Jose Mourinho said Rooney could return to face Chelsea on Sunday

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Wayne Rooney has not travelled to Belgium for their Europa League tie on Thursday.

United play the first leg against Anderlecht in Brussels and travelled on Wednesday, but Rooney was not among the squad.

Mourinho said that this was because Rooney has a 'bad feeling' in his ankle despite training with the squad earlier in the day.

He says the England forward could be fit to return at the weekend, when United play Chelsea in the Premier League.

Mourinho said of Rooney: 'He has a bad feeling in his ankle and he's not ready yet. Let's see for the weekend.'

Imbang lagi...

United nggak punya winger kanan yang bisa diandalkan. Lingard standar aja mainnya. Kadang bagus tapi seringnya biasa aja.

Default Re: [UEL] Anderlecht 1-1 Manchester United

JOSE MOURINHO REACTS TO ANDERLECHT DRAW

Jose Mourinho was disappointed his Manchester United side could not turn their dominance into victory in Thursday night’s Europa League draw against Anderlecht.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s first-half goal was cancelled out by Leander Dendoncker late on as the Reds drew 1-1 in the first leg of the quarter-final in Brussels, leaving the tie open heading into next week’s return at Old Trafford.

Read what the boss had to say in his post-match interview with BT Sport and press conference...

Positive result but could have been better
“The result is positive – to play at home with an advantage, to start the game with an advantage, it is a good result but I think the result should be much better. We can only blame ourselves because we had an easy game to play in the second half and we didn’t play in attack with that instinct. We lost the ball easily too many times, we stopped our counter-attacks because of sloppy decisions, sloppy touches of the ball and then we gave them opportunity to have some counter-attacks. But luckily our defenders were very much in the game and they resolved all of these problems. But if I were a Manchester United defender I would be very upset with the attacking players because they have to kill the game and they didn’t.”

Need to kill off matches
“We have to kill matches. We had chances, control, but we don't score goals; we risk. There was lots of space to kill, good chances. Lots of chances that we don't get because of a bad touch, sloppy touch, a flick, bad decisions in the last third. There was a team with good organisation at the back, but one mistake and we were punished.

“In my poor English I cannot find a better word [than sloppy]. You have to play more seriously. Put the performance of two or three of our attacking players together and you squeeze not much juice out of it. Rashford, Lingard, Ibrahimovic, Martial. They were very similar. But the people behind: very solid, very focused. The defenders did the serious work but the people who had to kill the game didn't. We start the game at Old Trafford in front, but we had all the conditions to kill the game.”

Strong defensive performance
“It was a strong performance from the team from a defensive point of view. [Jesse] Lingard, [Henrikh] Mkhitaryan, [Marcus] Rashford – they did defensively what we asked them to do, to compact the team, to control direct opponents, to cover some spaces. We were very solid defensively and that is not just about the defenders, it’s about the team as a team. But then when the team is broken, because we go to counter attack, we cannot lose so many balls because it’s not just about the chances we missed because we didn’t miss so many chances, it’s about half-chances. The chances where we feel the space is there, the time is there, the end decision is wrong.

Sometimes where you have to play two-touch, we play one touch and lose the ball. Other times you have to play one touch, you keep the ball, you turn, one more touch, you lose the ball. It looks like the decisions were wrong and probably the only one that everything was correct, the timings, the touches, the decisions was Paul [Pogba]’s shot, which was a good save by the keeper but obviously this is what happened to us all season, we have chances, we don’t score enough goals.”
