David Beckham and Sir Alex Ferguson Retirements Signal the End of an Era

David Beckham was a winner everywhere he went.

After winning league championships with Manchester United, Real Madrid and Los Angeles Galaxy, Beckham won Ligue 1 with Paris Saint-Germain this past season.

Earlier today, Beckham decided to retire as a champion when he announced his retirement from football, effective at the end of the season.

The announcement of Beckham's retirement might be somewhat surprising, considering he just completed a transfer to PSG this past January.

However, when analyzing the former England captain's play, it was clear his career would end in the near future.

During the five months Beckham spent at PSG, he was primarily utilized as a substitute. He averaged a 78.7 percent pass completion percentage, according to WhoScored.com.

This was the fifth lowest percentage of completed passes on the club who played at least nine matches.

Beckham was used primarily as a substitute, starting just two of the 13 fixtures he partook in this year.

At the age of 38, Beckham is ten years removed from his final season with Manchester United.

United, who were the club with which Beckham built his brand over a decade ago, also had retirement news this past week.

After spending 26 years at Old Trafford, manager Sir Alex Ferguson is retiring following Sunday's fixture at West Bromwich Albion.

The announcement of Ferguson's departure was similar to Beckham's.

Although Ferguson was still succeeding in his managerial duties, he did not have the same power that he appeared to possess in recent years.

This was evident in the multiple transfer saga's involving star forward Wayne Rooney over the past three years.

Fittingly, Beckham and Ferguson will retire within weeks of each other.

Both Beckham and Ferguson represented two distinct footballing brands.

Ferguson represented the blue-collar image of a football manager. Despite the wealth and resources of Manchester United, Ferguson was not focused on acquiring the biggest transfers on an annual basis. He was more interested in developing from within through youth players.

Whenever a player thought they were bigger than Man United, Ferguson would force them out of Old Trafford.

The central message of Ferguson's Manchester United teams was that no individual was bigger than the club.

Beckham was made into that example ten years ago.

Arguably the biggest superstar athlete in the world at the time, Ferguson and Beckham's relationship ruptured in 2003.

Following a loss to Arsenal in the FA Cup, the manager kicked a boot across the dressing room, hitting Beckham above the eye. Ferguson refused to apologize for his actions, claiming whatever happens in the dressing room was "sacrosanct."

Several weeks later, Beckham was infamously dropped for a Champions League quarterfinal match against Real Madrid.

Although the midfielder did score two goals as a substitute, it was clear Beckham would leave Old Trafford in the summer.

The departure of Beckham ten years ago signified the movement of the star's brand to Madrid. But it also showed the end of an era where star players and managers can stay together for long stretches of time.

In the years following Beckham's departure, the two biggest stars developed at United, Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo, were involved in transfer sagas.

Ronaldo did leave after being prodded by Ferguson to stay an extra year. However, Rooney does not want to stay and there is a good chance he could leave this summer.

Both Ronaldo and Rooney also highlight the route of vagabond football superstars, who will jump to different teams when afforded the opportunity.

Granted, neither player was a part of Manchester United until their late teens.

This exemplifies that there is a lack of a connection between clubs and star players, a gap which emerged in the aftermath of Beckham's transfer.

Following his move to Madrid, Beckham played for four different clubs. He was unable to find the same safety that Ferguson brought due to the lack of job security for managers.

The departure of Ferguson from football concludes the era of managers who would control clubs for decades.

No boss will have the ability to wield the same power that Ferguson had at their clubs, nor will they attempt to control their superstar players.

For this reason, Ferguson and Beckham's relationship will go down in history as one that highlighted the emergence of the superstar player and the way in which that player is handled.

The departure of Beckham from Manchester United in 2003 signaled that players could leave their clubs if they felt it was necessary to do so.

Meanwhile, there will never be a manager like Ferguson, who will keep his millionaire-earning players in line through a "hairdryer" style of treatment.

Fergie Time... for an autograph! After 27 years of blasting refs, Sir Alex lines up for photos and souvenirs for officials

After 27 years of giving the hairdryer treatment to English officials, you'd expect the Premier League's referees to be glad to see the back of Sir Alex Ferguson.

However, after Ferguson's final game in charge at Manchester United, referee Michael Oliver, fourth official Chris Foy and linesmen Ceri Richards and Dave Bryan posed for photographs and even asked for the Scot's autograph.

Ferguson celebrated his 1,500th game in charge of the Red Devils on Sunday, and watched his side play out a thrilling 5-5 draw against West Brom, the first in Premier League history.

Super fans: Linesman Dave Bryan (right), referee Michael Oliver (centre right), Chris Foy (left) and Ceri Richards (centre left) pose with Sir Alex Ferguson (centre) after the match

Form an orderly queue: Match officials wait for Sir Alex Ferguson's autograph after the match

Sharing a joke: Ferguson prodded Chris Foy as he came onto the pitch

But the retiring 71-year-old has had few kind words to say about match officials during his time in charge at Old Trafford.

Ferguson, who shared a joke with Foy as he made his way onto the pitch to a guard of honour, has had harsh words to say about the referee in the past.

In 2009 during a match between United and Chelsea, Foy allowed play to continue when United defender Patrice Evra was down injured, allowing the Blues to sweep forward and net at the other end.

As the rules state the official should halt play for a head injury, Ferguson felt Foy should have stopped the game for the France defender to receive treatment.

Last goodbye: Ferguson celebrated his final game at The Hawthorns, a 5-5 thriller against West Brom

Making a point: Ferguson has had disagreements with Foy in the past

After Chelsea won the Community Shield four years ago he said: 'The referee saw it, he clearly saw it.

'I’m disappointed because he [Foy] has stopped the game twice before that.

'Once when [Michael] Ballack went down he jumped up and was back on his feet again in seconds.

'That decision cost us the game. We’ve said it time and time again, all we want is consistency.'

The former Aberdeen manager has also had a pop at Sunday's referee Oliver in the past.

No go: Foy has also received a ticking off from the Scot when he has refereed Manchester United games

During the game between Swansea and United earlier this season, Wales defender Ashley Williams kicked the ball into the back of Robin van Persie's head as he lay on the floor, an act, Ferguson claimed, that could have killed the Dutchman.

'The referee has had one of those games. I know he is a young referee but dear me what a performance that was,' said Ferguson afterwards.

But Sunday afternoon was a day for celebration and the usually combative Scot was in a jovial mood.

Ferguson's side threw away a three-goal lead to allow Steve Clarke's team back into the game, with Chelsea loanee Romelu Lukaku netting a hat-trick on the final day of the season.

Lucky to be alive? Ferguson fumed at Oliver after he failed to send Ashley Williams off for kicking the ball into the back of Robin van Persie's head during the match between United and Swansea

Raging: Ferguson gives Mike Dean his opinion on Boxing Day last year

Seriously? Ferguson has a history of berating officials for giving decisions against his team

SVEN GORAN ERIKSSON: The day I signed a contract at United to replace Fergie

Former England football manager Sven-Goran Eriksson was never one to shirk controversy and here he reveals how he signed a contract to replace Alex Ferguson.

Sir Alex Ferguson was a genuinely nice man. We met many times and even had dinner together on a few occasions.

But woe to the person who threatened or bothered Manchester United in any way.

Then Ferguson would not spare his venom. I know, because he often aimed that venom at me.

Warring words: Sir Alex Ferguson (right) talks with then Lazio manager Sven Goran Eriksson

He caused a fuss before practically every friendly we played with England. Friendlies were completely useless, he thought. Players only got hurt. Sometimes Ferguson would call at seven o’clock in the morning, ordering me not to select one of his players for a friendly. The player was injured or else he needed to rest, Ferguson claimed. I was not going to let Ferguson bully me. If I wanted a Manchester United player in my squad, I was going to select him.

On September 23, 2003, the defender Rio Ferdinand was training with United when representatives from England’s anti-doping organisation came to the training ground to conduct tests on four randomly selected players, among them Ferdinand. For some reason, Ferdinand skipped the test, leaving the training ground and going home. It was viewed as a very serious offence, on a par with testing positive.

The FA showed no mercy to Ferdinand. The new chief executive, Mark Palios, instructed me not to select Rio for the decisive Euro qualifier in Turkey on October 11. Ferguson, not surprisingly, did not appreciate the FA’s actions. He called me at the crack of dawn.

He wanted me to select Ferdinand in the squad, directly disobeying the order I had been given by my employer. ‘I can’t select Ferdinand,’ I said. ‘You have to call and yell at someone else.’

National service: Eriksson was in charge of England for five years but left after the 2006 World Cup

It is strange to think that by that point I could already have replaced him as manager of Manchester United. That is what very nearly happened. Ferguson had announced that the 2001/02 season would be his last. He had managed the team for 16 years and won everything there was to win, including the Premier League seven times. He was getting on a bit and probably wanted to finish on top.

One day I got a phone call from Pini Zahavi, a leading football agent. He wanted to know if I could come for breakfast at a club in London the following morning. He did not want to say on the phone what it was about. It was very secretive. ‘Sure,’ I said, ‘no problem.’

When I arrived, Pini was there with Peter Kenyon, the chief executive of Manchester United. Straight off the bat, Kenyon asked me did I want the job as manager of Manchester United as of next season? I didn’t think about it.
‘Yes,’ I said. ‘I do.’

I knew it would be tricky. I had a contract with England until the 2006 World Cup and I would be severely criticised if I broke that contract. But this was an opportunity to manage Manchester United, probably the biggest club in the world. I would be able to stay with England through the World Cup. My appointment would not be made official until after the tournament.

Signed: Eriksson met with Peter Kenyon (above)

A contract was signed – I was United’s new manager. A couple of weeks passed and Pini called again. He wanted another meeting. When I got there, I knew something was wrong. Kenyon explained that Ferguson had changed his mind. He did not want to leave the club after all, but had agreed to stay in the job for another three years.

I don’t know why Ferguson had changed his mind. In the papers they wrote that his family thought he would miss football too much. Maybe his U-turn had to do with United’s relatively poor season. Surely Ferguson did not want to leave his career on anything but a high.

I know that he was made aware that the club had picked me as his successor. Had he vetoed my appointment? It did not matter. He kept his job and I kept mine.

But to this day, Pini has the signed contract where it says I was Manchester United’s new manager.

I had a lot of respect for Ferguson. How could you not? He had built so many great teams throughout the years and I appreciated that his teams always tried to play attacking, positive football.

But during my time with England, I had no problems with any of the club managers in the Premier League, except him. Ferguson defended Manchester United’s interests at any cost. It was a good trait to have, but it made my job more difficult.

I had already been involved in a few scraps with him, but a bigger confrontation occurred with just a month to go before the 2006 World Cup in Germany. This time it involved our biggest star, Wayne Rooney.

It all started with a game between Chelsea and Manchester United on April 29, 2006. Chelsea were comfortably 3-0 up with ten minutes to go. The match was over when Rooney, for some reason, threw himself into an unwinnable tackle. Wayne immediately grabbed his foot and grimaced. He had to come off.

The England team doctor, Leif Swärd, was also at the game and I asked him to go down to check on Rooney. When Ferguson saw Leif outside the Manchester United dressing room, he pointed at him and said: ‘Don’t let him in.’

It turned out Rooney had broken a metatarsal bone, just as David Beckham had done before the 2002 World Cup. Later, Ferguson called me. ‘You can’t pick Rooney for the World Cup,’ he said.
‘Who says that?’ I asked.

‘My doctor,’ Ferguson replied. ‘Rooney is injured.’

‘OK,’ I said. ‘Then I will come with my doctor to talk to you.’

I think it was a Sunday morning when Leif and I met Ferguson and United’s doctor at the Manchester United training ground.

We drank some tea and chatted before talk turned to the subject we were there to discuss – Rooney’s injury. He cannot play in the World Cup, Ferguson said flatly.

The United doctor brought out some X-rays that he said showed that Rooney’s broken bone would not heal in time.

When the doctor finished, there was a moment’s pause before Leif looked him in the eye.

‘Why do you sit here and lie to me?’ Leif asked.

I thought Ferguson and his doctor would fall off their chairs. I almost fell off my own chair. I had never heard Leif even raise his voice.

‘What do you mean?’ the guy asked.

‘I operate on breaks like that all the time,’ Leif continued. He knew their story was not true.

Leif was one of Europe’s foremost specialists on this kind of foot injury. I just wish I could have filmed Ferguson’s face, and his doctor’s, when Leif explained that Wayne’s break would heal in time for the World Cup. Maybe he would have to miss the first game, but he would be ready for the second, no problem.

When Leif had finished, I turned to Ferguson. ‘Sorry, Alex,’ I said. ‘I will pick Rooney.’

Before I selected my final squad, he called me again. This time he was screaming into the phone – that was his way of communicating – something about making my life very difficult if I went against him and picked Rooney. Now I’d had enough of his shouting.

‘Alex,’ I said, ‘I wish you a very nice holiday, but I am going to select Wayne Rooney for the World Cup. Goodbye.’ Then I hung up.

It was the last time I spoke with Sir Alex Ferguson during my time as England manager.
