manutd.com -Real Madrid have upped the stakes for the Red Heart United charity match against Manchester United by enlisting two world greats, Zinedine Zidane and Luis Figo, to take on the Reds at Old Trafford.

Zidane and Figo will join a host of former Real players including Fernando Hierro, Fernando Redondo, Steve McManaman, Jose Amavisca, Alfonso, Emilio Butragueno, Pedro Contreras, Manolo Sanchis, Christian Karembeu and Ivan Helguera at the Legends match on 2 June, which will raise money for the Manchester United Foundation.

The first leg of this charity thriller was played last June at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium and finished 3-2 in favour of Real Madrid. Last week, Edwin van der Sar, Jaap Stam, Teddy Sheringham and Nicky Butt were added to the list of United greats who have already pledged to play at the game.

"The game is certainly going to be a crowd pleaser," said manager Bryan Robson. "Judging by the players that Real Madrid are bringing to Old Trafford, I’d say they are taking it very seriously, but so are we!

"They narrowly beat us last year and we are all determined to make a comeback at Old Trafford but, above all else, we want to put on a great show for all the fans. The work the Manchester United Foundation does in the community is really important to us and it’ll be a great day to raise funds and highlight its achievements."

Van Nistelrooy to play for legends

Ruud van Nistelrooy has been confirmed as the latest big name to appear in Manchester United's legends game against Real Madrid at Old Trafford on June 2.

Van Nistelrooy intends to play for both teams in the fixture, which will give the Dutchman a chance to finally acknowledge the United fans who supported him during five years at the club given the abrupt manner of his exit. During his time at Old Trafford, the former striker scored an incredible 150 goals.

Ruud van Nistelrooy is returning to Old Trafford to represent both Manchester United and Real Madrid in the Legends game on 2 June.

manutd.com - The Dutchman has thrown his support behind the Red Heart United charity day and is travelling to Manchester with his family to show his young children where he used to fire goals with incredible regularity in his playing days.

After leaving the Reds for Real in 2006, he feels he never really had the chance to say farewell to the supporters who still appreciate his exceptional marksmanship over a five-year period at the club.

"I'm really looking forward to getting on the pitch and playing in front of that crowd again that I always played for," he admitted to ManUtd.com.

"I never had the chance to say goodbye after I left so I'm looking forward to it. I want my children to be part of the day and share the experience as I'll be taking them to Old Trafford for the first time.

"I won trophies at Manchester United and Real Madrid but my proudest memory from both clubs is training and playing week in, week out with my team-mates. It will be an honour to play alongside both sets of players again.

"Playing at Old Trafford gave me so many unforgettable experiences, so to come back and play in front of the fans again makes this a really special event."

Van Nistelrooy was back in Manchester for the unveiling of the new Sir Alex Ferguson statue but his base in Marbella means he has been watching more of Real in the flesh of late. "It is easier to get to Madrid as it's two hours away so I've been there a couple of times," he added. "I went to United's game against QPR in November after the presentation on the Friday.

"I still watch them a lot on TV and follow their progress but the first time I was back was for the statue and the second time is now only six weeks or so away and I am really looking forward to it."

Van Nistelrooy will line up with the likes of Fernando Hierro, Steve McManaman, Luis Figo and Zinedine Zidane for Madrid while he will be jostling for a position with Teddy Sheringham, Dwight Yorke, Andy Cole and Dion Dublin for United.

Legends' squads almost complete



The squads are beginning to take shape for the Red Heart United Legends match at Old Trafford.

manutd.com - Manchester United will take on Real Madrid on 2 June, following live music from the likes of JLS and Amelia Lily, with proceeds from the event going to charity.

Bryan Robson is managing the Reds, who were beaten 3-2 at the Bernabeu last summer, and has a wealth of talent at his disposal with new introductions in defence, Norwegians Ronny Johnsen and Henning Berg, helping to enhance that area of the side.

More names are expected to be added to the list in due course.

Scholes joins Legends team



Just weeks after retiring, Paul Scholes will return to Old Trafford to play in the Red Heart United legends match with Real Madrid at the request of team manager Bryan Robson.

Scholes will join a host of former team-mates including Andy Cole, Jaap Stam and Edwin van der Sar to face the Spanish giants, who will include the likes of Zinedine Zidane, Luis Figo and Claude Makelele among their ranks.

Having recruited Scholes, who bowed out of football after last weekend's 5-5 draw at West Brom, Robson relished the prospect of seeing the United hero play again: “I think Scholsey will love not just being on the pitch with Real Madrid, but also with Zinedine Zidane.

“In the past he has said that Scholsey was the best midfield player in the world, so it will be nice for Paul to play against him again and the rest of the Real Madrid players. We all still love participating in the game and playing for charity is something players enjoy doing.”

Real Madrid travel to Old Trafford hoping to defend a 3-2 victory claimed in the first leg at the Bernabeu last year. And although the match is being played in aid of the MU Foundation, Scholes is keen to turn the deficit around.

“It would be great to win the game,” Paul explained. “But there are some true greats in their team; players who have won World Cups and European Championships.”

“The skill, dedication and passion it takes to be the best in the world is something you never lose. It may be for charity, but it’s going to be a very tough game.”

That sentiment is echoed by the great Zidane, who is only too aware of Scholes' abilties having once described him as 'the complete footballer': “He’s almost untouchable in what he does,” Zizou said.

“I never tire of watching him play. You rarely come across the complete footballer, but Scholes is as close to it as you can get. One of my regrets is that the opportunity to play alongside him never presented itself during my career.”

The Red Heart United legends match will be pre-empted by an opening ceremony in which JLS, Amelia Lily and Tinchy Stryder will all perform a selection of hits, offering a fantastic day out for the whole family.

In keeping with the two clubs’ origins, fans can also try their hand at various Spanish and British themed games whilst sampling traditional cuisine from both nations.

Berg warning for Scholes

Henning Berg has joked that Paul Scholes needs to curb his tough tackling in the Red Heart United game this coming weekend.

The Norwegian will line up again with his former team-mate when Manchester United and Real Madrid's legends teams meet during a family day out to remember at Old Trafford.

Scholes' final competitive fixture in a red shirt was the Reds' 5-5 draw at West Brom when he came on as a substitute and picked up a yellow card for a late challenge. Berg is hoping the midfielder avoids the wrath of the referee on Sunday because his fitness will be much needed against the Spanish aristocrats.

"Scholesy is fit so he will have to play 90 minutes for us," Berg told ManUtd.com. "He’ll just have to be careful not to get a yellow card like he did at West Brom. We want him to last the full match!

"Hopefully, for this Real Madrid game, we will have a few more players in our squad so we won’t all have to play 90 minutes each, like we did against Rangers recently.

"I think it does help if we can change the players a little more than we did in that game but it was still an enjoyment to play, as well as seeing the lads again."

The former defender has turned his hand to management after retiring and is keen to find new employment in England after he was not given the opportunity to prove himself at another of his old clubs, Blackburn, when dismissed after only 57 days in charge.

"I was working in Norway for seven years and, obviously, coming to Blackburn felt like a good opportunity," he explained. "I knew it was a gamble and, having had my time cut so short there, I would like to have another go at establishing myself and proving what I can do in this country.

"I would like to get back in. It'd be strange if I hadn't learned anything from Sir Alex Ferguson as I know I was only with him for a few years but I still remember what we were doing, how we behaved and what he did. He has been a big influence in terms of how I have been managing."
