Bastian Schweinsteiger is a doubt for Manchester United's Barclays Premier League trip to Newcastle United on Tuesday night.

The Germany international was injured towards the end of the 1-0 Emirates FA Cup win over Sheffield United and, initially, it looked as though he would be leaving the field on a stretcher. Instead, he gamely battled on rather than leave the Reds - who had already used all three substitutes by that point - down to 10 men and, thankfully, Wayne Rooney kept his nerve to fire home an injury-time penalty.

With another fixture on the horizon, Morgan Schneiderlin, Michael Carrick and Ashley Young were rested after their recent exertions, while the boss felt Andreas Pereira showed his quality with a cameo appearance off the bench.

"It shall be difficult of course [for Schweinsteiger to face Newcastle]," said van Gaal. "I don't know yet but I think he has a knee problem. Everyone thinks he has an ankle problem but I think it's more the knee than the ankle. We'll have to wait and see.

"Schneiderlin is not injured but he's in the red zone and had an overload. In the Christmas period, he played every game and we have to take care of that. I don't take risks and, because of that, we have a very young bench. I trust these players also because Pereira is coming in and was a very good substitute, I think.

"With our injuries and players in the red zone, we have to take care of it. I think we have done it well."

Manchester United winger Ashley Young was substituted due to injury during the first half of his team's clash with Liverpool on Sunday.Although Young isn’t a first-team regular, he’s a useful individual to have around the squad. In a group that has been much changed under the tutelage of Louis van Gaal, the winger is one of the most experienced players around and someone who knows all about the Old Trafford club.

During the Dutchman’s first season in charge at United, Young was forced to wait for his chance in the team. But when he did eventually get a run in his preferred position on the left flank, he impressed.

Even though Young isn’t an unmovable first-team presence, Van Gaal will want to get him back in the fold sooner rather than later.

Injured Darmian taken to hospital

Manchester United's Matteo Darmian became the fifth full-back to join the injured list after being withdrawn during the 1-0 defeat to Southampton.

The Italian made a brave aerial challenge to prevent Shane Long from reaching a cross but was clattered into by the visiting striker and was clearly in pain as he received treatment on the field.

Although initially looking determined to continue, it was clear he was in no condition to return to his duties and he was replaced by Paddy McNair before another substitute, Charlie Austin, headed a killer blow three minutes from time.

"It is bad because he is now in hospital," van Gaal said after the game. "He was spitting blood. It looks like his rib and his chest, but we have to wait and see as I cannot say. It was not a nice view for the players to see that.

"I can only say that is the fifth full back who has been injured so that is what I have to do every week - make solutions to sort the problem."

Marcos Rojo, Ashley Young, Luke Shaw and Antonio Valencia have all been forced to undergo surgery.

Ashley Young could be back within just six weeks despite fears a serious groin injury had ended his season

* The winger-turned- full back could be back as early as six weeks though

Ashley Young is hopeful he will return for Manchester United this season and could be back in as little as six weeks after suffering a groin injury which had threatened to end his season.

His expected return date is currently between six and eight weeks, which means he could return for United at the end of March.

Louis van Gaal's side face rivals Manchester City on March 20.

Young did the damage during United's 1-0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield and Van Gaal wasn't optimistic of seeing his winger-turned-full back again this term.

He said: 'Ashley Young has a severe groin injury,' Van Gaal said in an interview with MUTV.

'It shall be operated on, so he's out for a long time.

'It's unbelievable, but we're not lucky with that. (Phil) Jones and (Bastian) Schweinsteiger cannot come back this weekend.

'You can count it and we have seven injuries.'

Young's absence remains a cause for concern amid the mounting injuries piling up for the club, blighting the defence in particular.

The club are considering bringing in reinforcements before the transfer window closes, despite the uncertainty over the manager's future.

VAN GAAL'S INJURY UPDATE ON FOUR REDS

Louis van Gaal has confirmed Matteo Darmian will miss Manchester United’s Emirates FA Cup fourth-round tie at Derby County on Friday, although he does not believe the injury is serious.

Darmian became the fifth full-back to join the injury list when he collided with Shane Long during the first half of last weekend's 1-0 defeat to Southampton. The Italian was quickly replaced by Paddy McNair and sent to hospital to undergo a thorough examination of his problem, but on Monday he used his personal Instagram account to tell fans: “Thank you all for the support, I'm fine! See you soon.”

Van Gaal has also confirmed to MUTV that Michael Carrick may return to his team for the first time since registering his 400th United appearance against Sheffield United on 9 January, but the midfielder will not play for 90 minutes against Championship side Derby at the IPro Stadium.

Asked about United’s current injury situation, the manager gave this update on Thursday: “It’s more or less the same. Darmian is now out and maybe Michael Carrick shall come in but of course he’s not able to play 90 minutes. But it’s very good he is coming back. With Darmian, it is very positive actually. It’s not too severe but he’s not able to play against Derby.”

Bastian Schweinsteiger suffered an injury during the second half of the Sheffield United match and that forced the German to miss the three following games. Phil Jones has also not featured since the 2-1 victory over Swansea City at Old Trafford on 2 January and van Gaal is reluctant to state when they will return.

“I cannot say [if they are close] because every time I make a remark about injuries it is always difficult because injuries have developments and you have to wait and see,” the manager said. “Also they have to train and be adapted to the rhythm of the Premier League which is high. When you are more weeks injured it takes more time to adapt to that rhythm.”

Marcos Rojo, Luke Shaw, Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young are still absent with long-term injuries.

UNITED DUO INJURED IN UNDER-21 MATCH

Adnan Januzaj and Guillermo Varela were both withdrawn due to injury in the first half of Manchester United Under-21s' 7-0 thrashing of Norwich City on Monday night.

The duo picked up knocks and, although they both tried to battle on, were replaced by substitutes Matty Willock and Tim Fosu-Mensah within three minutes of each other.

Januzaj appeared to be holding his hamstring while Varela was the victim of two late challenges as he tried to make progress down the left flank.

On the plus side, Phil Jones played for almost an hour with coach Warren Joyce confirming everything went to plan for the centre-back, even though he was involved in a clash of heads with team-mate Willock. Memphis Depay played the full match and appeared to enjoy the chance to showcase his skills in a one-sided affair.

Will Keane netted five times for the rampant Reds with Andreas Pereira and Tim Fosu-Mensah also on the scoresheet.

MIXED NEWS FOR UNITED'S INJURED PLAYERS

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal is likely to be without three players who were on Under-21 duty on Monday when naming his squad to face Sunderland this weekend.

Phil Jones, Guillermo Varela and Adnan Januzaj all picked up knocks during the second string's 7-0 win over Norwich City at Old Trafford. Although Bastian Schweinsteiger is still sidelined, there is more encouraging news on Marcos Rojo and Antonio Valencia following their operations.

"It's not looking good because I also let my players play in the second team and various players were injured again," the manager told MUTV at the Aon Training Complex on Friday afternoon. "They're not very nasty injuries but I still have to give them time to recover.

"It is a big pity because Jones is a very good central defender and we are missing him and also Marcos Rojo for a long time already.

"I cannot say Bastian is returning within two weeks because I have given him, more or less, a little holiday as he also has to change his mindset. It's good for players. I have done that also with Antonio Valencia, Marcos Rojo and Luke Shaw, for example, when you are injured for longer than normal.

"The light at the end of the tunnel is more for Rojo and for Valencia. They are coming back and I hope it's as soon as possible."

Van Gaal also revealed to MUTV that striker Will Keane has been rewarded for his spectacular form at Under-21 level with a place in Saturday's squad.

The Reds are unbeaten in 13 league visits to the Stadium of Light and will close the gap on the Barclays Premier League top four with victory ahead of Sunday's schedule, when Arsenal face Leicester City and Manchester City take on Tottenham Hotspur.
