De Gea skippers Spain U21s David De Gea was one of a number of Reds involved in international action on Thursday. The young keeper captained Spain Under-21s to a thumping 7-2 win in Georgia after winning the European Championship with them in the summer. Benfica's Rodrigo hit a hat-trick for the reigning champions and De Gea had little chance with the home side's goals. "Great victory," he Tweeted. "Now flying to Lugo for the second game with Georgia on Monday." Another goalie, Ben Amos, was an unused substitute in England Under-21s' 6-0 romp against Azerbaijan but a third United keeper - Sam Johnstone - was one of three Old Trafford representatives in the Under-19s' 0-0 draw in Holland. Will Keane played in attack and Larnell Cole came off the bench for the second half to make his international debut. "The three new lads [including Cole] were involved for the first time and they can all be happy with their contributions," coach Noel Blake commented to TheFA.com. Robbie Brady continued his fine form for club (Hull) and country with the opening goal in Republic of Ireland Under-21s' 2-1 success against Hungary in European Championship Group Seven. The official FAI site reported that the winger "turned on the style". And Paddy McNair started in midfield for Northern Ireland's youngsters*as they pulled off a fine 1-0 win away to Switzerland. Manager Paul McKee said of the friendly display on the official website: "That’s one of the best performances I have seen from an Under-17 Northern Ireland team." __________________________________________ 01/09/2011 11:30 - manUtd.com, Adam Marshall Duo eye England debuts Tom Cleverley and Phil Jones are hoping to make their England debuts in Friday night's Euro 2012 qualifier with Bulgaria. Cleverley is grateful for another chance to impress after reliving an embarrassing first impression in senior training with Jones finding his team-mate's own goal very amusing in the exclusive interview with FATV. "It was an own goal in a full-sided game," the midfielder recalled. "I was gutted the game got called off anyway but it meant I had to leave on the own goal really. "At least I scored in my first session! I tried rolling back to Rob Green and it came off my shin and ended up flying in the net. It was a pretty embarrassing moment for me." Jones admitted Wayne Rooney has helped him settle in to the senior set-up under Fabio Capello. "He's Wayne Rooney - a good character and a lively character," said the defender. "He's been very helpful and understanding and has certainly made me feel welcome at international level and on club duty. He's a fantastic player and you can only learn from him. It's great to have him around. "Everyone's world-class players here and it's about the collective team spirit. We've got to come together and produce the goods on Friday night. There's no fear, just excitement to get out there." Cleverley echoed those sentiments as he relishes his first taste of an England international after missing out on a debut against Holland due to the riots in London. "There's a good vibe," he stressed. "Everyone seems in good form for their clubs. "It's my first experience of senior international football and I'm expecting quite a hostile environment as their fans and players will be up for it. So I'm expecting a tough test."

International Reds round-up Wayne Rooney produced a masterclass in how to lead the line as England triumphed 3-0 in Bulgaria. All the goals came inside the first half with Gary Cahill claiming the opener before Rooney rose to powerfully head home a Stewart Downing corner ahead of team-mate John Terry. Seconds before the break, Ashley Young teed up his Reds colleague for a simple tap-in and the striker went on to lead the home defence a merry dance throughout the second half - although he looked uncomfortable in the final moments after over-stretching when hunting a hat-trick goal. Chris Smalling made an accomplished debut at right-back, despite being subjected to a thorough examination by Martin Petrov and co, as he made one vital headed clearance and defended resolutely. Young was substituted just past the hour mark with his job done in front of Dimitar Berbatov in the crowd as Fabio Capello's side remain on course for a place at Euro 2012 - Tuesday's opponents Wales doing England a favour with a 2-1 win over Montenegro. After the game, it emerged that the FA reported racial abuse from the home fans aimed at Young to UEFA delegates at the stadium. Javier Hernandez did what he does best for Mexico, despatching a typically clinical finish to earn his country a 1-1 draw with Poland and continuing his remarkable strike-rate at international level. Nani played his part in Portugal's 4-0 win at ten-man Cyprus in Group H - helping to set up one of Cristiano Ronaldo's two goals before going off with five minutes remaining. Jonny Evans picked up a last-minute yellow card as Northern Ireland slipped to a costly home reverse against Serbia in Group C. Patrice Evra played the full 90 minutes of France's hard-fought 2-1 success in Albania and, on Saturday, Darren Fletcher marked his comeback with a goal and an assist for Scotland in the 2-2 draw with Czech Republic.

Boss keeps fingers crossed Sir Alex admits he's keeping his fingers crossed that all his players come back from international duty unscathed. United have five representatives in Fabio Capello's England squad and Wayne Rooney appeared to pick up a minor injury towards the end of the 3-0 victory in Bulgaria on Friday night. The in-form striker is expected to be fit for Tuesday's clash with Wales at Wembley and is one of 10 players who could be in action for their countries ahead of Saturday's teatime encounter with Bolton. However, the boss is pleased that the international calendar has rescheduled matches for Tuesday to give clubs a vital extra 24 hours of preparation for domestic weekend commitments. "You've just got to accept it," he told MUTV. "There's nothing you can do about it. "Over the last year, we had Paul [Scholes], Gary [Neville], Ryan [Giggs] and Edwin [van der Sar] who had retired from internationals so we had the benefit of having those players for weekends. Now those players, bar Giggsy,*are away from us*so most of the players are going to internationals. "We have to keep our fingers crossed that they come back healthy. Sometimes we're lucky, sometimes we're not. It's not in our hands. "The only benefit is the internationals are now Tuesday fixtures and that gives us an extra day to prepare for weekend games." |
