We can all name the United greats, but when were they at their peak? In a new series for United Review we select the seasons when they truly excelled - featuring the one and only 'Keano'.

Picture the Irishman at his absolute best and the 1999/2000 vintage is as close as you’ll get to that image of perfection. His goal return was a season’s best, and only in 1993/94 and 1998/99 did he play more often, but those statistics alone don’t do justice to the finest of his 13 seasons in red.

Much is made of his contribution in the history-making, triple trophy campaign referred to simply as ‘The Treble’. Indeed, his inspirational display against the mighty Juventus in the Delle Alpi remains rightly regarded as his magnum opus.

Yet rather than his appetite for glory having been sated by the finest haul of silverware ever landed by an English club in one season, his hunger grew.

“Some live off what they’ve done in the past,” Keane told the official magazine. “That’s not my way and never will be.”

In the campaign after the Treble, Keano – or ‘Keanie’ to his team-mates – was true to his word. He was in his absolute pomp: captain, warrior and the finest midfielder in the country, bar none. What made this season better than his others?

At the age of 29 he retained the physicality that had made him such a box-to-box powerhouse.

Except now it came with the nous of a player who’d won the lot across 200 United games. His passing was exemplary, his eye for goal never sharper and his force of will dragged the team through those inevitable games when they collectively weren’t ‘at it’. He hit new heights of excellence almost weekly, and all against the backdrop of a contract negotiation that threatened his possible departure.

Two goals against old foes Arsenal put the cap on a commanding display against nemesis Patrick Vieira, sealing a pulsating 2-1 win at Highbury. He scored the only goal against Palmeiras in the Intercontinental Cup final in Tokyo.

He was outstanding on the evening when news of his renewed contract was announced to the Old Trafford crowd a few minutes into a 3-1 home win against Fiorentina, in which he scored. Between times he was rarely less than majestic.

Occasionally he reminded us he was human, such as the night he scored an own goal in our Champions League exit to Real Madrid.

But even this glitch was not enough to deny him the PFA and Football Writers' Player of the Year awards – the latter being won with a then record 53 per cent of journalists’ votes.

He was appreciated by his own fans, too, becoming the first player to win the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award in consecutive years.

It was lifting the Premier League trophy for a fifth time that meant most to him, proving just reward for a season in which he’d contributed more than anyone.

Roy Keane has hit out at Manchester United's flops following their 3-1 defeat by Liverpool at Anfield, claiming some of the players are not worthy of playing for the side.

The Red Devils were thoroughly outplayed at Anfield on their way to a defeat that leaves them a stunning 19 points off their rivals, who stormed to the top of the table.

Worse for the Red Devils was they slipped 11 points behind fourth place Chelsea, leaving their hopes of qualifying for next season's Champions League in serious doubt.

Keane had little doubt on the main issues surrounding Jose Mourinho's side though, claiming that the club's transfer policy has been a failure.

As a result the former United captain believes United are well off the pace of their rivals and need to rebuild starting with the defence, with Keane critical towards Ander Herrera for being too easily beaten by Sadio Mane that led to Liverpool's crucial second goal.

'I certainly believe some of the players for United are not good enough,' Keane told Sky Sports.' They are so far behind [Manchester] City and Liverpool.

'Defensively they need to get a foundation, they were all over the place. They were found out today and that is a real concern for the future.

'All these players are trying, they are doing their best. But Herrera do your job properly, Decision making is costing games.'

Despite being one of United's star men, Paul Pogba failed to even get on the pitch at Anfield after being left on the bench by Mourinho.

Keane believes it is time for United to cut their losses next summer on the midfielder who rejoined the club back in 2016 for £89million, while the Irishman also declared that United had 'no chance' of finishing inside the top four.

'I think the players are giving everything. I think there’s one or two players not on top form, Pogba on the bench,' Keane added.

'Come the summer you move him on, he’s left United before. I just think they’re short, defensively they’re short.

'Man United, that’s where they’re at, I guess fourth is the best they can get. If you came down from the Moon and knew nothing about Manchester United, you'd think they were an average Premiership side.'

Roy Keane has returned to English football by becoming Martin O'Neill's assistant at Nottingham Forest.

The former Manchester United captain helped take training on Monday and has spoken of his desire to get Forest back into the Premier League.

O'Neill made clear his wish to appoint Keane as No 2 having worked with him at Republic of Ireland for five years, and negotiations were concluded on Sunday evening.

The former Manchester United captain got to work on Monday by attending his first session. Keane appeared in fine spirits as he stepped onto the pitch at Forest Training Academy. O'Neill took over at the City Ground earlier this month and wanted Keane to join him

There has been a delay of a fortnight as Keane weighed up whether to target a job as manager in his own right, but Forest have worked hard to bring him back to the club.

Keane played at the City Ground under Brian Clough between 1990 and 1993.

Keane said: 'I am happy to be back. The club gave me my chance and I will always remember them for that.

'When Martin got the job and gave me a shout, I thought that once a few things fell into place I'd be ready for it. Things moved pretty quickly over the weekend.

'It is nice to get the deal done and get involved with the first session. It is a huge challenge ahead and 20 years out of the Premier League. It will be tough but I am looking forward to it. I am ready.'

The move marks the first time Keane, 47, has worked in club football since a five-month spell as Paul Lambert's Aston Villa assistant in 2014. Keane watched Forest's 3-1 win over Wigan on Saturday from the stands.

He added: 'There are a lot of big clubs in the Championship fighting to get out of it. We will give it a good go, I have huge respect for Martin. I have seen the team a number of times. Hopefully with one or two signings and a bit of luck we can be competing.'

O'Neill has wanted to be joined by Keane since Forest made their approach. Speaking at his unveiling, he said: 'He was a great asset to me at Ireland.

'He was tough to handle, no doubt at all, but it's what makes him special. He was a fantastic footballer and he didn't win those things by just sitting around.'

Jakarta - Sejumlah klub Liga Inggris akan memotong gaji para pemain mereka selama pandemi virus Corona. Hal ini dikritik oleh eks kapten Manchester United, Roy Keane.

Chelsea, Southampton, hingga Arsenal adalah contoh-contoh klub yang berencana memangkas gaji para pemain mereka. Hal ini dikarenakan klub tidak mendapat pemasukan berarti selama kompetisi dihentikan, termasuk dari hak siar maupun tiket pertandingan.

Keane tak suka dengan keputusan itu. Ia berpendapat harusnya para pemain tetap menerima seluruh gaji mereka sesuai kontrak.

Apalagi klub-klub Premier League banyak dikuasai oleh para konglomerat. Sejauh ini, Mesut Oezil dikabarkan menjadi salah satu pemain yang menolak pemotongan gaji.

"Ada tekanan kepada para pemain di klub-klub besar, yang dimiliki orang kaya, untuk menerima pemotongan gaji. Kalau saya bermain di klub besar, saya tak akan mau melakukannya," kata Keane kepada The Football Show, dikutip Sky Sports.

"Memang ada tekanan kepada pemain, tapi itu kan terserah mereka mau melakukan apa dengan gaji mereka. Ambil seluruh gajimu dan jika kamu dermawan, kamu bisa menyumbangkannya untuk orang lain. Para pemain harusnya jangan merasa tertekan, apalagi yang bermain di klub besar."

"Mereka menandatangani kontrak, dan itu urusan pribadi antara pemain dan klub. Tak masuk akal kalau semua pemain harus menerima pemotongan gaji. Harusnya terserah masing-masing individu."

"Jika pemain ingin menerima gaji full, apalagi mereka tahu klub mereka dimiliki seorang miliarder, maka lakukan saja," terang pria asal Republik Irlandia itu.

Keane: Saya Tak Mengerti Rooney dan Ferdinand di MU

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia -- Mantan kapten Manchester United Roy Keane mengaku tidak bisa akur dengan bintang seperti Wayne Rooney dan Rio Ferdinand karena tidak mengerti gurauan mereka.

Keane meraih banyak sukses selama 12 tahun berseragam MU di bawah asuhan Sir Alex Ferguson. Eks pemain asal Republik Irlandia merebut tujuh gelar Premier League, empat Piala FA, dan trofi Liga Champions.

Sepanjang 12 tahun memperkuat MU, Keane melihat banyak pemain datang dan pergi. Di pengujung karier di MU, Keane kedatangan pemain seperti Ferdinand pada 2002 dan Rooney pada 2004. Keane sendiri meninggalkan MU pada 2005.

"Dinamika ruang ganti berubah karena ada banyak pemain muda datang. Sejujurnya ketika saya berada di pengujung karier, saya melihat sekitar ruang ganti dan melihat pemain seperti Rooney, Ferdinand, [Darren] Fletcher dan [John] O'Shea, dan semuanya berubah," ujar Keane dikutip dari Sky Sports.

Meski mengaku jarang berkomunikasi dengan Rooney, Ferdinand, dan pemain muda MU lainnya, Keane memastikan tidak memiliki masalah dengan mereka.

"Saya jarang berbicara dengan mereka, tapi saya selalu melihat gambaran besar apakah mereka akan jadi pemain yang cocok untuk MU. Itu yang paling penting," ucap Keane.

"Saya profesional dan mereka semua pemain yang sangat bagus, jadi saya senang bisa main bersama mereka. Tapi dalam hal bergurau, minum teh atau kopi bersama mereka, lupakan saja," ujar Keane.

'The league table doesn't lie': Roy Keane believes Manchester United will find it hard to 'get past Liverpool or Manchester City over the next 12 months' as he questions their defence

Roy Keane doesn't believe Manchester United will be able to compete with Liverpool or Manchester City during the next year.

In an interview with The Independent, Keane says that his former club are not good enough in defence yet.

'The league table doesn't lie,' he said, before adding that United 'are a bit short at the back.'

Manchester United are now on a 13 game undefeated streak after Saturday's extra-time FA Cup win over Norwich.

However, a poor start to the Premier League season has left them in sixth place in the league, still five points off Chelsea in fourth.

United have shown more promise going forward in 2020, especially since the arrival of Bruno Fernandes, who has given them extra quality in midfield and when finding the final ball.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made a large number of changes to the team for Saturday's FA Cup match, and they were slow to get going.

Odion Ighalo opened the scoring for the hosts, but a good goal from Todd Cantwell got Norwich back in the game, and the Canaries had a number of chances after that as well.

A red card gave Norwich problems, and United eventually wore them down in extra-time, with Harry Maguire nabbing the winner late on.
