UNITED RESERVES TRAVEL TO TOTTENHAM

Manchester United's Reserves will target a second Premier League 2 win in five days when visiting Tottenham Hotspur on Friday in another live MUTV game (KO 12:00 BST).

Warren Joyce’s side extended this season’s unbeaten home record in the league by beating Arsenal 1-0 on Monday, courtesy of Ro-Shaun Williams’s first goal at Reserves level.

Forward Scott McTominay’s late withdrawal from the starting XI changed United’s approach against the Gunners but, with Sam Johnstone once again impressing in goal, the Reds saw out a narrow victory at Leigh Sports Village.

Sean Goss is set to make his long-awaited comeback from injury in Friday’s encounter at Tottenham’s training ground and Joyce is hoping for further improvement from his side.

The coach told MUTV: “I couldn’t fault the boys when we didn’t have the ball against Arsenal as they stuck to the plan and worked hard, but we were poor in possession.

“We had four or five chances but should have done better. We kept going and ground out a result. There were a lot of positives but I just want better possession and a bit more composure about our play.”

United clinched the title in the away fixture against Spurs last season, though that game was played at White Hart Lane. The Reds are currently sixth in the PL2 table, six points behind leaders Everton and six ahead of second-bottom Tottenham, who have lost their last five games.

“We’re here to win, we’re here to play football,” defender Joe Riley told MUTV. “We want to be playing for something. We won the league last season and want to be up there again this year.”

RESERVES: TOTTENHAM 1 UNITED 1

Premier League 2 | Tottenham Training Centre | Scorers: Harrison 31 | Riley 20

Manchester United's Reserves travel back north from London with a point after a 1-1 draw with Tottenham in Enfield.

Joe Riley opened the scoring for the Reds but Shayon Harrison levelled for the home side 11 minutes later and neither side was able to conjure up a winner after a tight second half.

Kyle Walker-Peters was bright as Spurs enjoyed a positive opening but keeper Dean Henderson remained largely untroubled. Sean Goss, back in the United side after a lengthy spell out due to injury, made an important clearance from a Walker-Peters cross, following a run by Harrison that deceived three defenders.

A first Reds shot on target yielded a goal as Goss found in-form Riley with a fine pass and the left-back calmly dummied a defender as he cut inside before slipping his finish wide of Thomas Glover. Spurs responded 11 minutes later when Cy Goddard's effort was blocked by Ro-Shaun Williams but, with Henderson already grounded, Harrison emphatically lashed home the rebound from outside the box.

Warren Joyce's side finished the half on top with Matty Willock forcing a diving save out of Glover and Goss unable to get his shot on target. When Goss took a quick-free kick to enable Matthew Olosunde to power his way into the box, Willock was squeezed out in the middle as United had to settle for going in at the interval on level terms.

Devonte Redmond, charged with the responsibility of playing as the lone striker, teed up Goss for a drive that flew well wide and the visitors lost Josh Harrop to injury shortly before the hour mark, with Demi Mitchell coming off the bench.

Both teams struggled to create anything of note until Spurs twice came close to taking the lead in a matter of minutes. Henderson made a smart one-handed stop to thwart Walker-Peters after a slide-rule pass by Joe Muscatt and Anthony Georgiou was booked for simulation as he fell under Riley's challenge when latching onto the rebound. From the next attack, Regan Poole's outstretched leg somehow blocked a Harrison shot from close range when a goal seemed inevitable.

Goss was withdrawn 13 minutes from time after a polished return and United tried to muster a late rally with Olosunde's attempt deflected through to Glover. Harrison wasted a glorious chance to earn three points for Spurs when angling his finish wide from a Walker-Peters cross in the 86th minute. There was no further late drama as Spurs at least arrested a five-game losing streak while United are still seeking a first win on the road in Premier League 2.

United: Henderson; Williams, Tuanzebe, Poole, Riley; Goss (Kehinde 77), El Fitouri; Olosunde (Warren 82), Willock, Harrop (Mitchell 58); Redmond. Subs not used: O'Hara, Scott.

RESERVES: BRENTFORD 3 MANCHESTER UNITED 2

Friendly | Griffin Park | Scorers: Mepham 12, 60, Alves 22; Riley 64, Goss 71

Manchester United narrowly lost out in an entertaining friendly at Griffin Park, which was arranged in conjunction with the deal that saw Brentford's Joshua Bohui join the Reds in the summer.

The Reds found themselves trailing by three goals with less than half an hour to play, but a spirited fightback, culminating in goals by Joe Riley and Sean Goss, almost saved the day.

Assistant Under-23 boss Tommy Martin was in charge of the team for this fixture, which was, of course, the team's first game since Warren Joyce's hugely successful spell as Reserves boss ended when he departed to take the up the post as first-team manager at Wigan Athletic.

United, wearing a change strip of blue shirts and white shorts so as not to clash with Brentford’s traditional red and white stripes, started the game brightly against the west London side.

The Bees, however, were in no mood to play second fiddle to their illustrious visitors, and in the 12th minute they swept into the lead when Chris Mepham lashed home an unstoppable shot from well outside the area.

And, as if to prove that their opening goal was no fluke, the Bees struck again, 10 minutes later, when Herson Alves headed home from Reece Cole’s right-wing cross.

It has to be said that Brentford were good value for their lead, but United almost reduced the margin in the 36th minute, when Matthew Willock’s fierce drive was kept out by a flying save from keeper Dominic Kurasik.

Four minutes before the break and Brentford were within inches of stretching their when Tom Field’s shot struck the woodwork.

United’s woes increased in the 59th minute, when Mepham claimed his second goal of the game, and Brentford’s third, after United had failed to defend a corner.

The game appeared to out of United’s reach, but first Riley found the net, with a long-range, curling shot in the 64th minute, and then, seven minutes later, Sean Goss beat keeper Kurasik from distance.

Bohui made a brief cameo appearance against his former club after being introduced into the game with 12 minutes to go.

United almost snatched a last-ditch equaliser in dying embers of the game, when Riley just failed to get on the end of Charlie Scott’s cross.

United: O'Hara; El Fitouri (Diedrick-Roberts 83), Williams, Poole, Riley; Olosunde (Scott 58), Goss, Willock, Mitchell (Doughty 61); Kehinde (Bohui 78), Redmond. Sub not used: M.Johnstone

UNITED RESERVES HOST SUNDERLAND

Manchester United’s Reserves resume the Premier League 2 campaign with a home game against Sunderland on Monday night (kick-off 19:00 GMT).

The Reds have not played in the league since drawing 1-1 away at Tottenham Hotspur on 28 October, though they have since contested a friendly at Brentford – the side’s first game since coach Warren Joyce departed to take up the first-team reins at Wigan Athletic.

Interim boss Nicky Butt is set to take charge of Monday’s game at Leigh Sports Village, which is live on MUTV, with the club yet to appoint Joyce’s successor.

Champions United remain unbeaten at home this term and are currently fifth in the table, a point ahead of Monday’s opponents, who have stuttered after a bright start to the season and lost 4-0 at Arsenal in their last game.

One player who is likely to be involved for the Reds is midfielder Sean Goss, who returned from a long-term back injury to set up Joe Riley’s opener in the draw with Tottenham and scored in the 3-2 friendly defeat at Brentford.

Under-18s coach Kieran McKenna watched the league game at Enfield and was impressed with the former Jimmy Murphy Player of the Year nominee’s performance.

"It was good to see Sean Goss up close in his first game back," McKenna told MUTV. "Everyone here has spoken about what a talent he is.

"I think he played against me at my former club Tottenham a couple of seasons ago and I could see his talent then. It was great for me to look at him up close and he was very impressive on the day."

RESERVES: MANCHESTER UNITED 0 SUNDERLAND 2

Premier League 2 | Leigh Sports Village | Scorers: Larsson 43, Kirchhoff 61

Manchester United's unbeaten home run in Premier League 2 came to an end on a stormy Monday night as the young team under Nicky Butt's interim management lost 2-0 to a Sunderland side featuring a few first-team players.

Two of those senior stars, Sebastian Larsson and Jan Kirchhoff, scored a goal in each half for the Black Cats after using all their experience to overcome the difficult conditions and increasingly impose themselves on the game.

With Butt's ex-team-mate Paul Scholes and the former United and current Sunderland manager David Moyes both watching from the relative shelter of the stands, the two sets of players started the contest in swirling winds at Leigh Sports Village.

Larsson's famed prowess with set pieces put the young United defence on alert, although his maiden attempt to score from open play flew high over Kieran O'Hara's crossbar in the 13th minute when both sides were still adapting to the weather. Another player from Sunderland's first-team squad, USA international Lynden Gooch, went much closer moments later when the 20-year-old's low drive across goal whistled past the far post.

At the other end, Reds midfielders Sean Goss, Matty Willock and Josh Harrop were doing their best to keep the ball down and to knit some moves together, and it was the latter who drew the first bookable foul of the night when the visitors' right-back Josh Robson clattered into him close to the corner flag. Larsson later received a warning from the referee but no yellow card when his challenge left United's Scott McTominay needing to change his boots.

Harrop inadvertently teed up the game's first effort on target after 30 minutes when his flicked pass inside the area was deflected into the path of Regan Poole. The Reds centre-back showed composure to cut inside one of his counterparts and fire in a left-footed shot which the Sunderland goalkeeper Mika Domingues pushed away impressively.

Poole was unfortunately involved in the opening goal for the Black Cats two minutes before half-time when he took the ball off Gooch's toes, only for it to reach Larsson. But Axel Tuanzebe was the really unlucky figure in the pivotal moment, as his outstretched foot helped the resulting weak shot from Sunderland's star player to spin away from O'Hara's dive and into the empty side of the net.

As if piqued by the manner of the breakthrough, the Reds raised the tempo and took the game to their visitors early in the second period, causing enough concern for Larsson to debate a free-kick and talk his way into the referee's notebook. But the Black Cats weathered that brief storm on the pitch and doubled their advantage just after the hour mark.

Kirchhoff doubled Sunderland's lead in the 61st minute after breaking up a United move in midfield and feeding a pass to the rapid Rees Greenwood. When the young winger's run lured O'Hara from his goal, the task of squaring the ball back into his senior team-mate's path became a simple one and Sunderland's no.6 smashed it between two Reds defenders on the line.

The Black Cats caused more trouble for Tuanzebe and company when Gooch charged into the area but although the young American went down with the sprawling O'Hara in attendance, penalty appeals were waved away. The same striker tried a different method of beating the keeper moments later but United's no.1 was equal to his effort with a fine flying save.

Willock on the run and Larsson with a free-kick at the other end both had shots from distance that rose above the respective crossbars before the latter had O'Hara scrambling to gather his ground strike.

The wind had died down and the game had opened up by this point, much to the Black Cats' advantage, and a third goal for them seemed more likely than a deficit-reducer for the Reds. That said, Devonte Redmond could have done better than blast over when McTominay knocked down Harrop's floated ball into the Sunderland box. And Redmond looked to have won a penalty when he was felled by George Brady's challenge, but the referee again declined to point to the spot.

There were further attempts to score from distance at both ends, with Harrop stinging Domingues's palms and yet another dead ball from Larsson being whipped over the goal frame in injury time. However, Sunderland had already done enough to claim their fourth Premier League 2 victory and inflict the Reds' first home defeat of the season and first loss anywhere since late September.

United: O'Hara, Williams, Tuanzebe, Poole, El Fitouri (Olosunde, 78), Goss, Kehinde (Mitchell, 69), Willock (Scott, 78), McTominay, Harrop, Redmond. Subs not used: Moutha-Sebtaoui, Doughty.

UNITED RESERVES FACE READING ENCOUNTER

Manchester United’s Reserves will be desperate to bounce back from a rare home defeat when travelling south to face Reading on Monday night (kick-off 19:00 GMT).

The live MUTV encounter provides an ideal opportunity to recover from a disappointing 2-0 home reverse to Sunderland in the first competitive fixture following coach Warren Joyce's move to Wigan Athletic.

Head of Academy Nicky Butt remains in interim charge and the ex-United midfielder takes the team to Wycombe Wanderers' Adams Park hoping for a first away win of the campaign. The Royals' second string are coached by ex-Portsmouth man Martin Kuhl with Butt's former Reds colleague, Jaap Stam, managing the first team.

Joe Riley was sorely missed against Sunderland as his performances at left-back have been outstanding this term, while the Reds continue to struggle for firepower due to the lack of an out-and-out striker.

United lie in eighth spot in the 12-team Premier League 2 table with Reading three points and a couple of places behind.

RESERVES: READING 2 UNITED 2

Premier League 2 | Adams Park, Wycombe | Scorers: Hyam 25, Mendes 52 | Harrop 28 pen, 29

Manchester United's Reserves secured a point from a 2-2 draw against Reading with Josh Harrop scoring twice in quick succession in the first half, the first from the penalty spot. Dominic Hyam and Joseph Mendes netted for the home side in an entertaining affair as both sides struck the woodwork in the closing stages.

The game started at breakneck speed with chances at both ends early on as Kieran O'Hara and Regan Poole made blocks before Callum Gribbin was squeezed out by Hyam's challenge as he looked to latch onto a return pass by Harrop.

Gribbin, making only his second Reserves appearance of the season following a hat-trick for the Under-18s at Liverpool recently, looked a man on a mission as he darted around from his position on the right of the attack, collecting a few knocks along the way.

Devonte Redmond, with a flicked header from a Sean Goss cross, and Andrija Novakovich traded efforts before United suffered a blow when Joe Riley, who missed the defeat to Sunderland last time out due to injury, pulled his hamstring. Sadiq El Fitouri came off the bench while Scott McTominay failed to get any bend on his shot when picked out by the lively Gribbin.

The goals that were being threatened arrived in a flood with Reading breaking through on 25 minutes. From a Josh Barrett centre, Mendes had an attempt blocked by Axel Tuanzebe but Hyam was left with a simple task of finding an unguarded net.

Three minutes later, Gribbin robbed Zak Jules of the ball and was clipped by Luke Southwood as he advanced past the keeper. Harrop stepped up to send Southwood the wrong way by stroking home and, 36 seconds later, he was on the scoresheet again.

A mere 10 seconds after the restart, the Reds' top scorer claimed his fifth of the campaign by winning the ball, drifting past a couple of defenders and firing past Southwood. McTominay was in an offside position in front of Southwood but the referee overruled his assistant when this was pointed out and awarded the goal.

Novakovich and Goss were off target with decent efforts while there was a slice of fortune when Tuanzebe's clearance cannoned off Poole and over the bar after O'Hara kept out a free-kick by Liam Kelly. Interim coach Nicky Butt made a tactical switch at the break, swapping right-back Ro-Shaun Williams with central defender Poole, and Harrop was unlucky not to clinch a hat-trick when curling wide of the far post from an El Fitouri pass.

Reading showed real appetite for the occasion, though, and drew level seven minutes into the second half when Hyam headed a corner down to Mendes, who profited from being in too much space and touched home from close range. Novakovich scooped wide as the hosts gained the upper hand, although Southwood had to deal, comfortably, with a volley by Harrop from outside the box.

Jake Sheppard could only find the side netting, under pressure from Harrop, after being put through by substitute Tyler Frost as the Royals continued to carry a real threat. However, Goss was close to reaching a misdirected Matty Willock shot and, with three minutes left, Williams's run allowed Goss to rattle the bar with a ferocious drive that deserved to be the winner.

There was still time for Reading to go close on a couple of occasions and Goss tried an audacious chip in stoppage time that forced a flying save out of Southwood. With virtually the last kick, Sam Smith rounded O'Hara but his weak shot trickled against a post.

The result leaves United still seeking a first away win of the Premier League 2 campaign with a match against Chelsea at Aldershot next on the agenda. The clash on 9 December will be screened live by MUTV.

United: O’Hara; Williams, Tuanzebe, Poole (Olosunde 85), Riley (El Fitouri 21); Goss, Redmond, Willock; Gribbin (Mitchell 84), McTominay, Harrop. Subs not used: Moutha-Sebtaoui, Kehinde.

RESERVES : TUANZEBE READY FOR CHELSEA TEST

Manchester United's Reserves travel to Aldershot tonight for the club's final Premier League 2 fixture of 2016 - away to Chelsea.

The Friday-night fixture, which kicks off at 19:05 GMT and will be shown live on MUTV, offers another opportunity for the Reds to pick up a first win on the road in the new competition and a repeat of last season's 1-0 victory would of course be welcomed.

Reserves captain Axel Tuanzebe has good memories from that game, when Matty Willock's strike secured the points at Stamford Bridge, and he is keen for a similar performance at Aldershot's Electrical Services Stadium.

"Chelsea are always a strong side and they've always got physical, talented players," the centre-back told ManUtd.com. "It'll definitely be a challenge to see if we can get the win.

"I played defensive midfield there last season, marking Kasey Palmer, who is a talented lad. I had to do a job for the team, a difficult job as he's a tricky player, and I had to be disciplined in more of a holding role instead of joining up with the attacking play.

"These are the things we'd been told in the analysis of the team so you have to learn and also understand these roles because you might be asked to do them again in the future. I've done that [job] since for England as well so it's good to have that in your locker.

"We won 1-0 last season, even though we were already champions. That shows the nature of Warren Joyce because he doesn't give up until the very end of the season. Regardless of us winning the championship, he wanted us to put on a perfect finish with a win and it's always important to end things on a high."

Nicky Butt is still in interim charge of United's Reserves following Warren Joyce's switch to Wigan Athletic and the coach is likely to be without influential full-back Joe Riley, who pulled up with a hamstring problem at Reading last time out. Callum Gribbin made his first start of the season at this level in that game and impressed but the midfielder might not be involved as he will be required for FA Youth Cup duty on Monday against Southampton at Old Trafford.

United's Reserves still have two Premier League International Cup games to play before Christmas - against Sparta Prague on 15 December and Middlesbrough a week later, both at Leigh Sports Village.
