Manchester United and City target Fred has held off deciding on his future until after next month's World Cup.

Sportsmail revealed on Thursday that Jose Mourinho was closing in on a £52.5million move for the Brazil star and the Old Trafford club were hopeful of concluding a deal before kick-off in Russia.

But the Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder wants to wait until after the tournament to make a final decision.

'Maybe after the World Cup I will make the choice,' he said. 'Now I am only thinking about the World Cup.'

The 25-year-old Brazilian has made no secret of his desire to move to the Premier League, and Shakhtar have already lined up a replacement by agreeing to sign Maycon from Corinthians for £5m.

Fred looked set to join Manchester City in the January transfer window before United made their interest known and his price began to rise.

Fearing a repeat of the Alexis Sanchez auction, City walked away from the deal and switched their sights to Jorginho of Napoli.

The former Internacional player, who has seven caps for Brazil, is one of two midfielders wanted by Mourinho this summer. The United boss also wants as many as four defenders, but may have to settle for two.

Toby Alderweireld has been identified as the central defender United require to play the ball out from the back, although Spurs will demand up to £75m for the a player who will be 30 when his contract runs out in a year's time.

Manchester United hope to make Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred their first signing of the summer in a £52.5million deal.

Talks over a transfer worth £43m plus add-ons have advanced after Jose Mourinho identified the 25-year-old Brazilian as the defensive midfielder he needs at Old Trafford.

Fred could have a medical after Brazil fly to England on Sunday to play Croatia at Anfield next week in a World Cup warm-up game, and United want the transfer tied up before the tournament in Russia.

Shakhtar have already lined up a replacement after agreeing a £5m deal for Maycon from Corinthians.

The Ukrainian club's president Rinat Akhmetov confirmed that Fred will be sold for more than Fernandinho and Alex Teixeira who joined Manchester City and Jiangsu Suning for £30m and £45m respectively.

Fred also looked set to join City in the January transfer window but the deal fell through when United declared an interest, and the Premier League champions switched their sights to Jorginho of Napoli.

'We will sell Fred to a good and strong club, do not doubt it,' said Akhmetov.

'For how much? I can only say that he will cost the potential buyer more than Fernandinho and even more expensive than Alex Teixeira.'

The former Internacional player is one of two midfielders wanted by Mourinho this summer to replace Michael Carrick and, probably, Marouane Fellaini.

The United boss would also like to sign as many as four defenders, but may have to be satisfied with two.

United hope to sign Belgium centre back Toby Alderweireld after making a formal approach to Tottenham.

'He is Italian and our hardcore must always be formed by players of our national team,' said Juve chief executive Guiseppe Marotta. 'It's a profile that interests us.'

Marotta confirmed that Juve want to extend Alex Sandro's contract despite interest from United and Paris Saint-Germain in the Brazil left back.

United have also drawn up a list of targets at right back which includes Sime Vrsaljko, of Atletico Madrid, Monaco's Djibril Sidibe, and Joao Cancelo who has been on loan at Inter Milan from Valencia.

Liverpool - Manchester United kabarnya terus bernegosiasi dengan Shakhtar Donetsk untuk transfer Fred. Pelatih Brasil Tite menilai wajar kalau MU menginginkan Fred.

Fred jadi salah satu incaran MU di bursa transfer musim panas ini. Sky Sports melaporkan negosiasi berjalan dengan baik dan mengarah ke kata sepakat.

Driven into the club's Carrington training ground in a black Mercedes, having played his part in Brazil's 2-0 win over Croatia at Anfield on Sunday, Fred is close to becoming the club's first summer signing.

The car had a female passenger in the front - believed to be a staff member at the club - with Fred in the back.

He passed the medical at their training ground and is expected to be unveiled soon.

Man Utd have announced a deal for Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred in their first move in the transfer market this summer.

Manchester United Fred have agreed a £52m deal with Shakhtar Donetsk for Fred.

The 25-year-old midfielder is set to sign a four-year deal at Old Trafford, with the option of a further year, after he completed a medical at Carrington earlier this week.

Fred arrived in the north-west on Friday night ahead of Brazil's friendly with Croatia at Anfield two days later and stayed in Liverpool city centre with his team-mates.

The Brazilian was chauffeured to United's training ground in the back of a black Mercedes van on Monday morning for his medical as the final touches were put to the deal.

United announced the deal with a statement on their website saying: "Manchester United is delighted to announce it has reached agreement with Shakhtar Donetsk for the transfer of Frederico Rodrigues de Paula Santos (Fred)."

Fred returned to London after his medical where he again linked up with his international team-mates at Tottenham's Spurs Lodge training base in Enfield.

United's new midfielder is preparing for Brazil's friendly with Austria in Vienna on Sunday ahead of flying out to Russia for the World Cup, which kicks-off on June 14.

Depending on Brazil's progress in the tournament, Fred may yet feature on United's pre-season tour of the U.S. The squad are due to fly out to Los Angeles on July 15 but only those players who exit the World Cup before the quarter-final stage are expected to link-up then.

Porto right-back Diogo Dalot, who is also set to have a medical at Carrington this week, will be fit to travel to the Land of the Free with United later this summer.
