Manchester United defender Luke Shaw doing 'great' in comeback from injury

The Man Utd left-back has been out injured since September but is nearing a comeback.

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw is back training on the pitch and doing 'great' as he steps up his recovery from injury.

Shaw, 20, has been sidelined since September after he suffered a double fracture of the right leg in United's Champions League group stage defeat to PSV Eindhoven.

The England international returned to training just a fortnight ago and provided a positive update on his progress on Instagram earlier in the week.

Now his manager Louis van Gaal has given further upbeat news and revealed he is now back on the pitch, albeit not yet training with the football coach.

Van Gaal said: "He's very positive, he's doing great, I cannot deny that so he's training on the pitch. But now he's training with the physiotherapist and he has to train with the football coach and that still hasn't happened."

If Shaw's recovery continues to progress well, he could be in line for a first-team comeback in the FA Cup final - if United beat Everton this Saturday at Wembley.

INJURY UPDATE AHEAD OF FA CUP SEMI-FINAL

Louis van Gaal does not have any fresh injury concerns ahead of Manchester United’s Emirates FA Cup semi-final against Everton, with only three long-term absentees set to miss the trip to Wembley.

Luke Shaw has been training individually with a physio and the young left-back is making good progress but is not ready to return just yet. Adnan Januzaj also needs to build his fitness before featuring for the first-team, while Bastian Schweinsteiger is not expected to play again this season.

Chris Smalling hobbled away from a late collision during Wednesday night’s 2-0 win over Crystal Palace, but thankfully the defender declared himself fit during his post-match interview with MUTV.

While speaking to the club’s official channel on Thursday, van Gaal gave this update on the injury situation: “The squad is nearly fit. Only Shaw and Schweinsteiger are unable to play and maybe Januzaj because he didn't play yet in the second team. But we have a full squad of fit players.”

Wayne Rooney played in midfield against the Eagles and was substituted to a fine ovation from the supporters on 78 minutes, presumably with Saturday’s match against his boyhood club in mind.

When asked to comment on Rooney’s good form in the team, van Gaal was reluctant to single out his captain. “Of course but that counts for every player I think. Not only Wayne. The media and now you are talking about Wayne but we have a squad of 27 players and I am happy with everybody.”

Picking a starting XI while excluding others is always difficult and the manager knows he will have to disappoint part of his squad. "Every player wants to play in a semi-final," he said. "I have to select 18 players and I have now 24 players fit so I have to disappoint six players and that is not fine for a manager."

Chris Smalling will be fit for Manchester United's FA Cup tie with Everton despite picking up knock in win over Crystal Palace

* Manchester United beat Crystal Palace 2-0 at Old Trafford on Wednesday
* Defender Chris Smalling picked up a knock following a tackle late on
* But he'll be fit for Saturday's FA Cup semi-final with Everton at Wembley

Chris Smalling will be fit to start at Wembley after hobbling through Manchester United’s win over Crystal Palace.

The central defender limped towards the end of Wednesday night’s 2-0 win at Old Trafford, raising fears he could be a doubt for the weekend.

But Smalling felt no ill-effects of the knock and will be ready for the FA Cup semi-final against Everton on Saturday.

Chris Smalling will be fit for Man United's FA Cup semi-final with Everton despite picking up a knock

‘I'll be fine,' Smalling said. ‘It was just a 50-50 but it's nothing serious.’

The midweek win, coupled with Manchester City’s draw at Newcastle, has again opened the door to a top-four finish.

A Damien Delaney own goal and Matteo Darmian’s first for the club saw United go two points behind their rivals with four games to play.

Smalling added: ‘I think we've done exactly what we've needed to do, and it's about having City and Arsenal looking over their shoulder, and we've put a bit more pressure on. Now we look forward to Saturday.’

Louis van Gaal knows he needs silverware and a top-four finish at the end of what has been a chastening campaign for United.

They go into Saturday against an Everton side bereft of confidence following Wednesday night’s humbling at Anfield, with Roberto Martinez on the brink amid a run of six games without a win.

VAN GAAL'S INJURY UPDATE FOR LEICESTER CLASH

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has no new injuries ahead of Sunday’s big Barclays Premier League clash with Leicester City at Old Trafford.

The Reds squad came through last weekend’s Emirates FA Cup semi-final against Everton unscathed, meaning only Bastian Schweinsteiger and Luke Shaw remain sidelined, although the boss hinted the latter has an outside chance of playing in the cup final on 21 May.

United are seeking three more points this weekend to maintain the top-four push and put the Foxes’ title celebrations on hold, with Claudio Ranieri’s side knowing victory would secure their first-ever league crown.

Louis van Gaal told MUTV on Friday: "We don’t have any injuries, except Shaw, who is already not injured any more but is building up, and Schweinsteiger."

Asked if Shaw could make the cup final against Crystal Palace, van Gaal replied: "He can, maybe, but it shall be difficult because he has to play first a lot of matches in the second team.

"We have to wait and see because you cannot say anything. It’s going very well with him."

DARMIAN SUFFERS ANKLE INJURY

Matteo Darmian will be assessed on his return to Manchester after injuring his ankle in the early stages of United's 1-0 triumph at Norwich City.

The Italy international started at left-back with Marcos Rojo moving into the middle to cover Daley Blind's absence. However, the defender was caught when attempting to block Ivo Pinto's run down the flank and stayed down in real discomfort before leaving the field of play and being helped onto a stretcher.

He returned to watch the game from the dug-out and saw Juan Mata bag the crucial winner with 18 minutes left.

"We have to wait and see," said manager Louis van Gaal, after being asked to provide an update on last summer's signing from Torino. "Darmian has a kick on the ankle so we will have to see the reaction tomorrow (Sunday).

"It is too early to say. Now he is walking in a brace but, tomorrow, it can be good again because a kick is a kick."

Januzaj joins injury list

Adnan Januzaj and Matteo Darmian will both miss Manchester United's final match of the season against Bournemouth on Sunday.

Januzaj, who played the final few minutes of the Reds' defeat at West Ham, picked up a knock in training and joins Darmian on the injured list after the Italian went off with an ankle problem in the win at Norwich City last weekend. Bastian Schweinsteiger and Luke Shaw are also both still unavailable.

There was better news on Ashley Young, who will train with the squad on Saturday.

"Ashley is coming in, so he is restored of his injury and can train tomorrow (Saturday) with our squad. But it is one training session," Louis van Gaal told MUTV.

"Unfortunately Januzaj has been injured in the training session, so he is out for Sunday. We have to wait and see for the final. The rest is like it was. Darmian is still out but can be in. It is dependable on the progress. Schweinsteiger is out and Shaw is out."

Asked whether Januzaj and Darmian could be available for the FA Cup final on 21 May, van Gaal told MUTV: "They can possibly be back."
