Default Manchester United 2017 / 2018 Awards

VOTE FOR MANCHESTER UNITED'S 2017/18 AWARDS

The polls for Manchester United’s end-of-season awards are now open at www.ManUtd.com/POTY, enabling fans around the world to decide who wins four of the club's big prizes.

Ander Herrera is the current holder of the historic Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year trophy and, before him, the midfielder's Spanish compatriot David De Gea made history by becoming the first man to claim the accolade in three successive seasons.

Our no.1 is among the frontrunners to win it again this campaign but is likely to face stiff competition from a number of team-mates, including top scorer Romelu Lukaku, Nemanja Matic and Jesse Lingard.

It is important to note that fans can vote for any current first-team United player who has made at least one senior appearance for Jose Mourinho this season.

Meanwhile, an online vote will also decide who wins the Denzil Haroun Under-23s Player of the Year, with Ethan Hamilton, Kieran O’Hara and Demi Mitchell all nominated for the prize by the coaching staff.

Tahith Chong, James Garner and Lee O’Connor have all been shortlisted for the prestigious Jimmy Murphy Youth Team Player of the Year prize, which is bound to be a tight and competitive poll.

Elsewhere, supporters are encouraged to select the Goal of the Season from a list of 10 contenders.

Hayooo pilih yang mana ?

VOTE FOR UNITED'S GOAL OF THE SEASON

Manchester United’s 2017/18 Player of the Year awards night will take place on Tuesday 1 May at Old Trafford – and you can now help to decide who wins the Goal of the Season prize.

We have picked out 10 eye-catching strikes from throughout the campaign for you to view, but which one will get your vote?

Antonio Valencia v Everton, Old Trafford, 17/09/17

The Ecuadorian got the Reds’ 4-0 win over the Toffees back in September up and running with an absolute screamer inside four minutes. Picked out by Nemanja Matic from the left, the right-back smashed an emphatic half-volley from 20 yards past Jordan Pickford to open the scoring in style. Antonio’s thunderbolt has already scooped three awards – the club’s and the Premier League’s Goal of the Month accolade, as well as being voted United’s best strike of 2017 by fans in a poll on Twitter. Is it worthy of another one?

Ashley Young v Watford, Vicarage Road, 28/11/17

The former Hornet stole the show on his return to one of his old clubs, as the Reds ran out 4-2 winners in a six-goal thriller back in November. Having already scored one brilliant goal in the game, the no.18 went one better with a sublime free-kick from 25 yards which was beautifully curled into the top corner. Is it the best of the bunch?

Jesse Lingard v Watford, Vicarage Road, 28/11/17

The aforementioned victory over the Hornets was wrapped up in impressive fashion by our irrepressible no.14, who went on a mazy solo run from inside his own half before stroking a composed finish past Heurelho Gomes to seal the win four minutes from time with his first Premier League goal of the season. It was voted our Goal of the Month for November, but does it get your vote for our best effort of the campaign?

Juan Mata v Leicester, King Power Stadium, 23/12/17

The Spaniard certainly had his shooting boots on when the Reds visited the Foxes just before Christmas. Having already netted the equaliser to cancel out Jamie Vardy’s opener, the midfielder scored his second of the game with a pinpoint free-kick as United came from behind to lead. Although the Reds would ultimately be frustrated by Harry Maguire’s late leveller, Mata’s fine finishing was to be admired. Does his delightful set-piece win you over?

Jesse Lingard v Burnley, Old Trafford, 26/12/17

Lingard made a telling impact when he stepped off the bench at half-time against Burnley on Boxing Day. With United trailing 2-0 at the break, the livewire forward got the Reds back into the game with a sublime finish, applying a deft flick to a Young cross. He then slammed in a late equaliser to earn United a point, but was the first of his goals worthy of getting your vote?

Anthony Martial v Everton, Goodison Park, 01/01/18

United’s first goal of 2018 was something special, as Martial opened the scoring in the Reds’ 2-0 victory over the Toffees with a sweet strike. The Frenchman brought a flicked pass from fellow countryman Paul Pogba under control before curling an exquisite effort into the corner of the net from the edge of the box early in the second half. Is it your pick of the contenders?

Romelu Lukaku v Huddersfield, John Smith’s Stadium, 17/02/18

After netting in the league meeting between the sides just two weeks earlier, the Reds’ no.9 proved to be the scourge of the Terriers once again in the Emirates FA Cup with a brace to see United safely through to the quarter-finals. The Belgian opened the scoring inside three minutes with a brilliant goal, latching onto a Mata pass before cutting inside and firing home ruthlessly beyond Jonas Lossl in the home goal. Does Romelu’s predatory finish give him the edge when it comes to your vote?

Nemanja Matic v Crystal Palace, Selhurst Park, 05/03/18

A goal that will live long in the memory, Matic’s first strike in a United shirt was one to savour. With the Reds coming from two goals down to level matters at Selhurst Park, it looked like the spoils would be shared in a thrilling match. But the Serbian midfielder had other ideas, taking aim with his left foot from 25 yards with an unstoppable half-volley, which flew past Palace keeper Wayne Hennessey and won the game for the Reds. It also topped our Goal of the Month poll for March, but is it deserving of the season’s best goal gong in your view?

Marcus Rashford v Liverpool, Old Trafford, 10/03/18

A young man for the big occasion, United’s no.19 proved to be the difference against our fierce rivals Liverpool last month, with a double in a 2-1 victory at the Theatre of Dreams. The first of his two strikes was an absolute cracker, cutting inside Trent Alexander-Arnold and unleashing a thunderbolt past Loris Karius. Is Marcus’s magnificent finish your favourite?

Chris Smalling v Manchester City, Etihad Stadium, 07/04/18

Last but most definitely not least is Smalling’s memorable Manchester derby winner against City. After Paul Pogba had cancelled out City’s commanding lead with two goals of his own, the Reds struck the decisive blow in the 69th minute as Smalling met an Alexis free-kick on the volley and rifled the ball past Ederson to complete an astonishing turnaround at the Etihad Stadium. Is Chris’s derby-day winner worthy of the accolade?

TOUGH CHOICE FOR KIERAN MCKENNA

Manchester United Academy coach Kieran McKenna admits he had a tough choice selecting three of his title-winning Under-18s squad to form the shortlist for the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award.

Exciting wide man Tahith Chong, midfield prospect James Garner and versatile defender Lee O'Connor ended up getting the nod and the chance to succeed Angel Gomes, the 2016/2017 winner.

Chong may have been elevated to the Under-23s but features in this category after illuminating United teams at various levels with his speed and skills. Garner, the England Under-17 captain, has also taken on the armband for the Reds and is maturing nicely as he starts to dictate games from the middle of the park.

Republic of Ireland youngster O'Connor is another with leadership qualities who has already forced his way into Ricky Sbragia's Reserves squad and always looks unflappable under pressure and comfortable in possession.

"It was hard," McKenna told MUTV. "A lot of different factors come into it - a player's age, whether he's a first-year or second-year [scholar] or an Under-16s - in terms of who we put forward.

"It could have been a number of candidates that we picked but, in the end, I thought Tahith, Lee and Jimmy could get the opportunity. Credit to those boys as they are three who have worked really hard and had very good seasons for different reasons.

"Those three would also be the first to acknowledge they've had a really good group of boys to play with, week in and week out, and to train and compete with on a daily basis."

SBRAGIA PRAISES TROPHY CONTENDERS

Manchester United's Under-23s may have had a difficult season in Premier League 2 but the three candidates for the Denzil Haroun Player of the Year award have all earned praise from coach Ricky Sbragia.

Ethan Hamilton has been a consistent performer in midfield and made the substitutes' bench for the Emirates FA Cup tie at Huddersfield Town earlier this year. Goalkeeper Kieran O'Hara nailed down the no.1 slot and has forced his way into the Republic of Ireland squad, while Demi Mitchell was very influential before departing for Hearts on loan in January.

"Ethan has been a reliable up and downer," Sbragia told ManUtd.com. "It can be forgotten but he's been like that all season. You see the flair and skill players getting attention and forget some of the other things. He's been very consistent, has led by example and trains well.

"He gives his all and that's all you can ask. That's Ethan and you just accept him. He's just there and okay, he never gets a lot of recognition, even if he did get that senior call-up and a taste of first-team level.

"Kieran has done well all season and been rewarded with promotion to the Republic of Ireland full squad from the Under-21s. He's saved us a lot of times and made some particularly good stops in the win at Liverpool.

"Demi showed in Scotland when he went up there that it's not a big step up for him. No disrespect to Scottish football but I think he went in there and dealt with it. It was a change for him in how Craig Levein at Hearts sees him playing and following the path he wants him to play.

"I spoke to Demi and he loves it. It's first-team football, and he was playing extremely well before the injury, it's been a great progression for his footballing experience."

POTY AWARDS: A CHANCE TO MAKE HISTORY

The polls have closed, the votes are in and a history-making night at the Manchester United end-of-season awards lies ahead of us.

Awards night is always one of the most eagerly-anticipated events on the club calendar, and the 2017/18 event promises to be another glamourous, star-studded evening full of intrigue and excitement.

Tonight’s showpiece is especially tantalising, as whoever claims the two most prestigious prizes on offer – the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year and the Players’ Player of the Year – will go down in Manchester United history, for different reasons.

The Busby-named award, voted for by the fans, has several deserving candidates, and each of the frontrunners are on the brink of their own special achievements.

David De Gea would become the first player to win the accolade for a fourth time, putting him one ahead of the legendary Cristiano Ronaldo, who was victorious in 2004, 2007 and 2008.

The Spaniard lost his crown to compatriot Ander Herrera last season, but has every chance of reclaiming the title after yet another fantastically consistent year.

Academy graduate Jesse Lingard could become the first homegrown player to win since Ryan Giggs did so in 1998. The 25-year-old has enjoyed his best campaign to date, notching 13 goals and becoming an increasingly influential presence in Jose Mourinho’s side.

Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic are not yet 12 months into their time at the club, but either could become the first to win the honour in a debut season since Robin van Persie did so in 2013.

The Players’ Player of the Year award is determined by the players’ votes, and was won last year by regular captain Antonio Valencia.

This award can often go to one of the more unsung heroes, such as Valencia last year and Chris Smalling 2016, who turn in the kind of consistent performances that rarely grab the headlines but earn them high respect from their peers.

Phil Jones recently suggested that Ashley Young was among those deserving of recognition.

“He’s a player who doesn’t get the plaudits that he should do,” said United’s no.4. “Maybe because he’s older, or because he plays left-back when people think he’s an attacking player. Everyone writes him off – you see it in the newspapers every day – but he produces every single time.”

Could Young emerge as the players’ choice tonight?

Elsewhere, there are ten goals up for the Goal of the Season prize, which was won last year by former Red Henrikh Mkhitaryan for his miraculous ‘scorpion’ kick against Sunderland.

Lingard’s solo slalom at Watford, Matic’s last-gasp volley at Crystal Palace and Valencia’s stunning Everton striker are among the favourites.

The final two of the five awards on offer concern the club’s famed youth set-up: the Denzil Haroun Reserve Team Player of the Year and the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year.

Demetri Mitchell, Kieran O’Hara and Ethan Hamilton are the nominees for the former, with the successful starlet joining notable winners of the past such as Nicky Butt, John O’Shea and Darren Fletcher.

The Jimmy Murphy award will be contested by James Garner, Tahith Chong and Lee O’Connor, one of whom will join an elite group of former winners that includes Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Marcus Rashford.

We’re poised for a fascinating evening at Old Trafford as we find out who will be triumphant in 2018, and MUTV will take you right to the heart of the action from 18:30 BST onwards. Tune in for the best of the build-up, a host of big-name interviews and, most importantly, to find out who has claimed our five awards.
