UNITED DEFENDER POOLE AGREES LOAN MOVE

Manchester United's Regan Poole has agreed a season-long loan switch to Northampton Town.

The Welsh youngster, who represented his country at the Toulon tournament this summer, will spend the 2017/18 campaign with the League One oufit.

After signing from Newport County in 2015, the defender has performed well for United Reserves at centre-back and in a holding midfield role. He made his first-team debut as a late substitute in the 5-1 win over Midjtylland in the Europa League tie at Old Trafford in February, 2016.

The switch will ensure a reunion with Cobblers boss Justin Edinburgh as the former Tottenham full-back handed Poole his debut as a 16-year-old when the pair were together at Newport.

"If it wasn't for Newport, I wouldn't be here [at United] now," the centre-back told Inside United after his arrival in Manchester.

"I have a lot to thank them for and [then] manager Justin Edinburgh. I still speak to him now, he's a really nice guy, and to throw me in for that Shrewsbury away game was a massive decision for him."

Poole is looking forward to linking up with his new team-mates and the Reds will keep close tabs on his progress over the course of campaign.

NORTHAMPTON TOWN SIGN MANCHESTER UNITED DEFENDER REGAN POOLE

Northampton Town have signed Manchester United central defender Regan Poole on a season long loan deal.

The talented defender began his career at Newport County, earning rave reviews in 15 appearances and attracting the interest of a host of top clubs, before he made the move to Old Trafford at the end of the August 2015 transfer window for a six figure fee. He made his United debut as a substitute in the 2015/16 last 32 Europa League game against Midtjylland.

Poole has also represented Wales from under 17 to under 21 level.

"Regan is a player I know well from my time at Newport County and he is an exceptionally talented player," said manager Justin Edinburgh.

"I gave him his debut as a 16 year old and he is a player with a fantastic temperament and someone who is well ahead of his years.

"He is a central defender who is comfortable on the ball. He is strong, he leaps well and he has all the attributes to be a top, top player. He is mobile and he will complement the other defenders we have at the club well.

"We are delighted he has committed to spend the season with us and I am very pleased to welcome Regan to the club.

“I think we have made some very strong signings this week and while work to strengthen the squad will continue, I am delighted with our recruitment so far.”

LOAN WATCH : UPDATE ON EIGHT REDS

Andreas Pereira became the eighth member of the Manchester United squad to move away from the club on loan this summer, when sealing a temporary switch to Valencia.

Only one of the Reds is still competing in the Premier League, Crystal Palace's Tim Fosu-Mensah, with Matty Willock, like Pereira, plying his trade overseas with Dutch outfit FC Utrecht.

Under-23s coach Ricky Sbragia will be keeping close tabs on the loanees as part of his role and is ensuring they are all settling into their new environments.

"I'm getting to know the ones on loan and will speak to them to find out how they are," he told ManUtd.com. "I enjoy that. I know from when I first came here that the big thing for us is to see how players are settling and what difficulties they are having. Having people from United going to watch them and speaking to them, rather than calling on the phone, makes it more personal and face-to-face so I'm happy with that.

"It shows they are far from being forgotten and, from my point of view, I like to do it. I will always pick a game that is convenient, if I have a day off, and will see how they are getting on."

Cameron Borthwick-Jackson (Leeds)
The full-back has appeared three times for the Championship side, and is unbeaten in those matches following two Carabao Cup wins over Port Vale and Newport County and a 0-0 league draw with Preston, when ex-Red Ben Pearson was sent off.

Tim Fosu-Mensah (Crystal Palace)
It's been a notable start to the campaign for the Dutchman who made his competitive debut for the Netherlands against France. The cap came on the back of some impressive personal displays for Palace, even if the Eagles have yet to score in the Premier League. He has played in all four of the Londoners' matches this term as a key part of the defence.

Dean Henderson (Shrewsbury Town)
The England Under-21 international has made five appearances for the Shrews and is gaining valuable experience between the sticks. He has kept two clean sheets already for Lee Hurst's team and the Town boss told the Shropshire Star: "I think it's a great platform for him coming here and playing League One football. Hopefully, it gets him seen a bit more in a competitive first-team game in the leagues."

Sam Johnstone (Aston Villa)
The reliable keeper has played five times for Steve Bruce's Midlanders this season after spending the end of last term with the Championship club. After a slow start, Villa are showing signs of improvement and Johnstone is holding down the no.1 slot, despite competition from Jed Steer, and making some fine saves.

Andreas Pereira (Valencia)
The promising midfielder sealed a return to La Liga on the final day of the Spanish transfer window after spending 2016/17 at Granada. It is expected he will make his debut for the Mestalla outfit in Saturday's game against Atletico Madrid after being handed the no.11 shirt.

Regan Poole (Northampton Town)
The Welshman has a new manager as his former boss at Newport, Justin Edinburgh, has been replaced by Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. Poole's only start so far came in a 1-0 home reverse to Fleetwood Town, with Andy Cole's son Devante grabbing the winner. However, the centre-back did help Wales Under-21s beat Switzerland 3-0.

Devonte Redmond (Scunthorpe United)
The midfield man has been involved in four games for The Iron since making his loan move. He came off the bench in two Carabao Cup games, including a defeat to Middlesbrough when former United colleague Ashley Fletcher was on the scoresheet. The 20-year-old made his League One bow as a late substitute in a 4-0 win at Plymouth Argyle and got 90 minutes under his belt in a 3-1 success against Sunderland in the Checkatrade Trophy.

Matty Willock (Utrecht)
The leggy midfielder joined brother Chris, who left Arsenal for United's Champions League rivals Benfica, in making a continental move during the window. Coach Erik ten Hag believes the youngster will thrive in the Netherlands, saying: "We are confident, having seen him play many times in the Premier League youth games, to promise that he can add value to Utrecht."

LOAN WATCH: UPDATE ON EIGHT REDS

Eight Manchester United players are continuing to spend time away from the club on loan.

Tim Fosu-Mensah, Andreas Pereira, Sam Johnstone, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, Dean Henderson, Regan Poole, Devonte Redmond and Matty Willock are the players currently enjoying loan spells elsewhere.

With the latest international break now upon us, ManUtd.com has taken a look at the loanees' progress in 2017/18 so far...

Sam Johnstone (Aston Villa)
The 24-year-old keeper has been a mainstay between the sticks for the Villans this term, featuring in all 11 matches of their Championship campaign, keeping five clean sheets. Most remarkably, he has made more saves than anybody else in the division and the Premier League so far, which has earned him a nomination for the Championship Player of the Month for September. Johnstone's impressive performances have provided the foundation on which the outfield players can build upon, which has seen Villa climb to seventh in the table with four straight wins - three of them being shut-outs.

Tim Fosu-Mensah (Crystal Palace)

It's fair to say it's been a difficult start to life at Selhurst Park for Fosu-Mensah, given Palace's early season form, but the 19-year-old defender has been one of the club's leading lights. The youngster has started all but one of the Eagles' seven league outings, missing the Old Trafford defeat due to his ineligibility, and his hearty defensive displays also saw him rewarded with a senior debut for the Netherlands as well.

Cameron Borthwick-Jackson (Leeds United)
The pacey left-back has played every minute of the Whites' Carabao Cup campaign, which has seen them beat Port Vale, Newport County and Burnley, to set up a fourth-round tie with Leicester City. Borthwick-Jackson will hope to retain his place for a second outing against Premier League opposition, which will help his fight for a more regular starting spot.

Andreas Pereira (Valencia)
Pereira has grown accustomed to the Spanish game having spent the 2016/17 campaign on loan at Granada, and he has impressed for Valencia thus far. The attacking midfielder has featured made five La Liga appearances for the club this term, and he played a major role in Simone Zaza's opener in Sunday's 3-2 defeat of Athletic Bilbao when regaining his place in the XI.

Matty Willock (FC Utrecht)
The athletic central midfielder joined Utrecht in order to gain experience playing in Europe this term, and he impressed immediately, scoring on his full debut for the club in the 6-0 defeat of Ajax Amateurs in the KNVB Beker. And Willock has since made his first outing in the Eredivisie - appearing as a late substitute in the 1-1 draw with Vitesse Arnhem on Sunday.

Dean Henderson (Shrewsbury Town)
Henderson has made a fine start to life in Shropshire, featuring in 10 of Shrewsbury's 11 League One matches, keeping five clean sheets, and conceding just six goals. The England Under-21 international's efforts have seen the Shrews cement a place at the summit of the table, as well as maintaining an unbeaten start in the league - a feat only achieved by two other English teams - United and Manchester City.

Regan Poole (Northampton Town)
The classy Welshman has featured in all four of Northampton's most recent league outings and, despite the club's indifferent form, he has impressed with his no-nonsense performances in the middle of the park. Poole's efforts have also seen him become a regular for Wales' Under-21s.

Devonte Redmond (Scunthorpe United)
The 21-year-old central midfielder featured in both of the Iron's Carabao Cup ties earlier this season, but he has been restricted to just one outing in League One. However, he did impress in two Checkatrade Trophy wins over Sunderland Under-23s and Grimsby Town, playing 90 minutes in both games.

LOAN WATCH: UPDATE ON EIGHT REDS

Eight Manchester United players are continuing to spend time away from the club on loan.

Tim Fosu-Mensah, Andreas Pereira, Sam Johnstone, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, Dean Henderson, Regan Poole, Devonte Redmond and Matty Willock are the players currently out of the club on a temporary basis.

As we enter 2018, ManUtd.com has taken a look at the loanees’ progress in recent weeks...

Tim Fosu-Mensah (Crystal Palace)
The 20-year-old, whose last appearance for United was against Crystal Palace in our final league game last season, has caught the eye so far during his loan spell at Selhurst Park. He’s made 18 appearances this season and his impressive form of late has coincided with an upturn in fortunes for Roy Hodgson’s men. The Netherlands international started the Eagles’ home games against Bournemouth and Watford but suffered a hamstring injury in the latter, which sidelined him for the Eagles’ 3-0 win at Leicester. He returned as a substitute in their 3-2 defeat against Arsenal before putting in an excellent performance in their goalless draw against Premier League leaders Manchester City, keeping Leroy Sane quiet and earning the Man-of-the-Match award.

Sam Johnstone (Aston Villa)
The 24-year-old keeper has continued to be a mainstay between the sticks for the Championship side as Steve Bruce’s men pursue promotion back to the Premier League. The sought-after stopper has kept 11 clean sheets in 26 league appearances so far during his season-long loan stint, including shut-outs in their 1-0 win at Middlesbrough and 5-0 victory over Bristol City in the last two games, which have pushed the Villans back into fifth in the table and firmly in the mix for a play-off place. Having also spent the second half of last season on loan at Villa Park, Johnstone is just two appearances short of 50 for the club – all but one of which have been in the Championship.

Andreas Pereira (Valencia)

The attacking midfielder, who spent last season on loan at fellow Spanish side Granada, has impressed so far in a Valencia side who have been one of the surprise packages of La Liga this season. Pereira, who arrived at on a season-long loan on deadline day, has scored one goal and recorded three assists in 19 appearances in all competitions so far – with his only strike so far a stunning effort in a 6-3 win over Real Betis in October. The 22-year-old has largely played either on the left or right flank in Marcelino’s favoured 4-4-2 formation this term and it’s paid dividends with some excellent displays as Valencia sit third in the table, two points behind second-placed Atletico Madrid. But, unlike in England, Pereira has had a rest over the festive period as the Spanish top-flight have enjoyed a winter break, with the action resuming again this weekend.

Cameron Borthwick-Jackson (Leeds United)
The pacey left-back has struggled to get regular game time this season under Leeds head coach Thomas Christensen, who has largely preferred Gaetano Berardi in the left-back position. Borthwick-Jackson played every minute of their Carabao Cup campaign but hasn’t featured since their 3-1 defeat at Leicester City in the fourth round on 24 October. The 20-year-old, who burst onto the first-team scene as a teenager at Old Trafford with some impressive performances under Louis van Gaal, will be hoping to get more opportunities to play in the second half of the season.

Matty Willock (FC Utrecht)
The athletic central midfielder joined Utrecht in order to gain experience playing in Europe this term, and he impressed immediately, scoring on his full debut for the club in the 6-0 defeat of Ajax Amateurs in the KNVB Beker. But, although he’s played a handful of times for the club’s Reserves, he has been unable to make his mark in the Dutch Eredivisie, having only made three appearances – the last of which was as a late substitute in their impressive 2-1 win at Ajax on 5 November.

Regan Poole (Northampton Town)
The classy Welshman has featured prominently in the Cobblers side languishing in the relegation zone in their second successive season in League One. Despite the September departure of manager Justin Edinburgh, who gave him his debut at Newport County, the teenager has been a regular fixture under his successor Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and has occupied a midfield berth in recent weeks. Although they have lost their last three games, the Wales Under-21 international has shown glimpses of promise in the position, which could bode well for the future.

Devonte Redmond (Scunthorpe United)
The central midfielder featured in both of the Irons’ Carabao Cup ties earlier this season, but he has been restricted to just one outing in League One – as a late substitute in their 4-0 win at Plymouth back in August. However, he was an ever-present in their Checkatrade Trophy campaign – playing in their games against Sunderland Under-21s, Grimsby, Doncaster and Leicester Under-21s. Boss Graham Alexander said Redmond “ticks all the boxes” when he signed on a season-long loan and the 21-year-old will be hoping he’s done enough to get more playing time in the second half of the campaign as they look to clinch a play-off place for the second season running.

Dean Henderson (Shrewsbury Town)
The England Under-21 international stopper has been in sensational form in Shropshire – which has been key to the Shrews’ magnificent campaign so far, with Paul Hurst’s men sitting second in League One and on course for automatic promotion to the Championship. Henderson, who benefited from a spell on loan at Grimsby Town in League Two last term, has kept 11 clean sheets in 24 appearances – all but one of which have been in the league – with his latest shut-out coming in their 1-0 win over struggling Oldham at New Meadow on New Year’s Day.

REDMOND RETURNS FROM SCUNTHORPE

Manchester United midfielder Devonte Redmond has returned to the club following a loan spell at Scunthorpe United.

The 21-year-old's time with the League One side was due to expire on 6 January but, as The Iron are not playing this weekend, he has been allowed to head back to the Aon Training Complex.

Redmond, who made seven appearances for his loan club, did come back to the Reds to appear for Ricky Sbragia's Under-23s side last year to get some more game time and will be looking to kick on in 2018.
