Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho unsure if Wayne Rooney will start Europa League tie with Zorya Luhansk: 'He can’t afford to have a performance that is not really good'

Jose Mourinho is ready to send a full-strength side out against Zorya Luhansk, but is delaying a decision as to whether Wayne Rooney starts because his captain ‘can’t afford’ a sub-par performance.

The Manchester United manager said at Carrington on Wednesday afternoon that Rooney needs protection from the glare of criticism.

Mourinho also revealed the United captain had missed training earlier this week and discussions will be had as to whether he is fresh enough to play a part.

‘He didn’t train on Tuesday,’ Mourinho said. ‘He did a little bit of a session on Monday. He had a back problem. Today (Wednesday) was the first time he had a training session with the other players.

‘The training session’s intensity and complexity was reduced because we have a game tomorrow (Thursday).

'I was completely convinced from playing him tomorrow from the beginning with his situation in the last couple of games but I’m not sure I will do that because of the situation you create to him.

'I think he really can’t afford to have a performance that is not really good. I’m here to protect him and not to put him in different situations. I have to analyse the best thing for him is to start the game.

'I’m going to discuss that with him and the medical staff and decide if he starts or is on the bench.’

Henrikh Mkhitaryan is set to miss out alongside Luke Shaw, who was sent home from training with a fever.

Mourinho believes United must win at Old Trafford on Thursday night if they want to progress through to the knock-out stages.

‘To be honest, we have to win,’ he added. ‘If we don’t, we have four matches and I’d say you’d have to win all the last four which is difficult. Tomorrow is very important.

‘I watched their matches against Fenerbahce and Dynamo Kiev. I chose two big ones, one at home, one away against two difficult opponents. I know what I saw, what I analysed.

‘One of my assistants went to watch the Fenerbahce game live and another one saw Dynamo. I watched on television. We tried to collect the proper information to give to our players. Their style, their philosophy. Yes, I think we’re prepared.’

Mourinho's United face a voyage into the unknown on Thursday night when they host Luhansk.

The Ukrainian side are playing in just their fourth European campaign in their 93-year history and have never faced an English side, but currently sit second in their domestic league ahead of powerhouse Kiev.

United trained at their Carrington base on Wednesday ahead of their second Group A game, in which Mourinho's side will be looking to bounce back from defeat at Feyenoord in the opening round of matches.
