Colombia talisman James Rodriguez has emerged as the star player at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and there is sure to be significant interest from Europe’s leading clubs this summer.

However, with Premier League clubs facing stiff competition from Real Madrid for his signature, there may be pangs of regret at Old Trafford after it emerged that Manchester United have twice turned down the chance to sign the brilliant Colombian playmaker.

United have had an extensive scouting system in place in South America and Rodriguez was firmly on the club’s radar as an 18-year-old in 2010 when he was starring for Argentine side Club Atletico Banfield.

United were approached by agents around the time that the club bought Javier Hernandez from Guadalajara but senior officials did not respond when Rodriguez would have been available for as little as £5million.

To rub salt into the wounds, United then bought the unknown £7.4m winger Bebe just over a month later but he has started just three games in four years since signing for the club.

Rodriguez, meanwhile, went on to sign for Porto for a fee in the region of £4m, where he won three league title and the Europa League under the management of Andre Villas-Boas as his development continued apace.

United’s interest was then reignited in 2013 but they were put off by an asking price that approached £40m, while there were also complications with third-party ownership that made any deal incredibly difficult to pull off.

French club Monaco made the big money move for Rodriguez, who joined the French club in a joint £60m deal for him and Porto team-mate Joao Moutinho last summer.

Now, with United boasting a number of players who operate most effectively in the ‘number 10’ position, including Juan Mata, Wayne Rooney and in the long term, Adnan Januzaj, it would seem very unlikely that Rodriguez will one day surface as a Manchester United player.

However, Monaco are braced for for a battle to keep hold of the Colombian this summer, with Napoli and Real Madrid registering an interest in the 22-year-old.

Although the French side will play in the UEFA Champions League next season, it may not be enough to persuade Rodriguez to stay, with his heart seemingly set on a move to Spain.

‘It would be a dream to play in Spain, one of the best leagues in the world,’ he is reported to have told Spanish radio station Cadena Cope.

When pressed whether he would prefer Barcelona, Atletico Madrid or Real Madrid, he replied: ‘I like Madrid more.’

Manchester United Transfer News: Arturo Vidal Boost, Latest on William Carvalho



Manchester United have already completed the signings of Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw, and now Red Devils supremo Ed Woodward is looking to add some more star names to the rebuilding of the deposed champions' squad.

Two players very much on United's radar are Arturo Vidal and William Carvalho. Both midfielders would be ideal for the club's current needs and would be welcomed with open arms by the faithful.

Here we take a look at the latest news surrounding both potential deals.

Arturo Vidal



With Chile now out of the World Cup after a strong showing—knocking out world champions Spain and taking hosts Brazil to a penalty shootout—the future of midfield general Arturo Vidal will now come into question once again.

Juventus are unlikely sellers, so any move for the player would have to run into the tens of millions.

However, TuttoSport suggests Vidal would be more open to a move to United than European rivals Real Madrid, boosting the Red Devils' chances of capturing him.

Vidal performed heroically for Chile in the World Cup despite suffering pain from a leg injury throughout the competition. He once again proved why he is considered the best midfielder of his type currently in world football.

Jack De Menezes of The Independent now claims United are willing to offer the player the huge sum of £250,000 a week in wages to join them.

But Vidal has publicly spoken about his desire to remain with Juve in recent months. He said to FourFourTwo (h/t Andres Garavaglia of Sky Sports):

I am going to stay at Juventus, I don't listen to anything that is being said from Spain. The president Agnelli has asked me to win the Champions League next season, and, as I have said many times, I am happy in Turin and my family is fine. For that reason I have no desire to listen to the speculation people are talking about.

Securing Vidal would be the biggest transfer in Manchester United history, and this point will not have escaped Ed Woodward as he looks to build a team with Louis van Gaal that will win the Premier League next season.

Vidal alongside Herrera would give United a dream central midfield and immediately put them back into contention for trophies after a disappointing campaign last year under David Moyes.

William Carvalho



Manchester United have reportedly taken steps to secure the transfer of William Carvalho from Sporting Lisbon.

David Kent of the Mail Online writes that United have sent a delegation to Portugal to complete the transfer of the player, making him the club's third major signing in recent days.

The player's buyout clause is set at £37.5 million, and United believe this is over-priced for the 22-year-old, per Kent. Hence a negotiation is still necessary.

Carvalho's reputation has exploded in the past year with many of Europe's top clubs taking an interest in him. He featured 29 times for Lisbon last season, per WhoScored.com, and featured twice for Portugal as they were eliminated at the group stage of the World Cup in Brazil.

Carvalho is a young player, and the Premier League might be a tough environment for him to hit the ground running. He has all the desired attributes of a top-class defensive midfielder, but he might take some time to settle down at Old Trafford.

But as United build for the future, his capture could end up being a clever piece of business by the club. They have already lost the talents of Paul Pogba, and signing Carvalho would improve United's midfield stock immeasurably.

Blow for Man United? Inter Milan enter race for Benfica star

Inter Milan are ready to hijack Manchester United’s move for Argentine winger Nicolas Gaitan.



Reports in Portugal over the weekend claimed United have finally opened talks with Benfica over Gaitan. The Old Trafford giants have tracked the 26-year-old since the 2011/12 season.

With negotiations underway, United have seemingly jumped ahead of rivals Liverpool and Zenit St Petersburg, who are also on his trail, but they will now have to fend off interest from Italy too.

Inter coach Walter Mazzarri has been given the green light to make major changes to his squad following his side’s fifth-place finish last term and he has urged his sporting director Piero Ausilio to pursue a deal for Gaitan.
