EARLY TEAM NEWS FOR ANDERLECHT CLASH

Jose Mourinho could welcome back two first-team stars for Manchester United's crucial Europa League quarter-final first leg against Anderlecht.

Goalkeeper David De Gea missed Sunday's 3-0 victory at Sunderland with a hip problem and right-back Antonio Valencia has been absent for the last two games after also sitting out Tuesday's draw with Everton.

Speaking to MUTV after the win at the Stadium of Light, Mourinho says he expects Valencia to be ready for Thursday's European test in Brussels.

“We played with the players available [against Sunderland]," he said. "Not one single player stayed in Manchester because we were thinking about resting them, or because we were thinking about rotation or about Anderlecht. Not at all.

“These are the players available at the moment and, when I look to the others, I just expect Valencia to be ready to play and no more, I don't think. I don't think any one of the other boys will be ready to play.”

Mourinho was without six players on Sunday, as De Gea joined Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Ashley Young, Juan Mata and captain Wayne Rooney in missing the Sunderland clash. The boss later gave a more detailed update on the Spanish stopper, however, after he was replaced by Sergio Romero for the match.

Romero - who impressed again in the absence of De Gea - has been a regular in the Europa League this season. And while Mourinho admits that De Gea's injury is "not serious", he suggested that the Argentinian could retain his place against Anderlecht.

“De Gea's injury is not serious and Romero every time he plays he plays so well," he added. “The fans are used to having Romero in goal in the competition [the Europa League] - that becomes the most important competition for us after winning the League Cup.

“The Europa League is the competition we can still win, so when Sergio plays in the Europa League and when we are giving him this confidence to play, it’s because we know that his answer is positive and today he looked like he was really comfortable.”

The Reds will fly out to Belgium on Wednesday, when Mourinho could provide a further update on his squad in his pre-match press conference. As always, our reporters will also be there to provide live updates of his media briefing, as well as build-up to the game.

PREVIEW: ANDERLECHT V MANCHESTER UNITED

So, Stockholm's in sight... Yes, Manchester United return to continental action on Thursday, as the Reds travel to the Belgian capital of Brussels to take on Anderlecht in the Europa League. This quarter-final, first-leg clash at Constant Vanden Stock Stadium represents a first meeting between the sides in almost 17 years and could prove crucial ahead of the return leg at Old Trafford next week. With next month's final in Sweden now within touching distance, United will be keen to build an advantage here.

When and where can I watch it? The match, which kicks off at 20:05 BST, will be screened live on BT Sport 2 in the UK. Fans can also follow the action with ManUtd.com's live match blog and via the club’s Twitter account, @ManUtd, while MUTV subscribers can tune in to Match Day Live at 19:00 BST for build-up to the game and then live radio commentary, before watching the full 90 minutes from midnight.

What's the early team news? Speaking to MUTV after Sunday's win over Sunderland, Jose Mourinho said he expects Antonio Valencia to be available for selection after the Ecuadorian sat out United's last two games. Valencia was one of seven first-team absentees at the Stadium of Light, alongside David De Gea, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Ashley Young, Juan Mata and captain Wayne Rooney. The boss later explained that while De Gea's hip problem is "not serious", Sergio Romero may retain his place after keeping his ninth clean sheet of the season at the weekend. Mourinho could provide a further injury update during his pre-match press conference on Wednesday, when the squad is set to fly out to Belgium.

How did we get here? Having been denied Champions League qualification by United's Round of 16 opponents FC Rostov, who beat them in the qualifying round, Anderlecht then finished second in Europa League Group C, behind Saint-Etienne, who we beat at the Round of 32 stage. In the first knockout round, Rene Weiler's men saw off Zenit St. Petersburg on away goals, before setting up Thursday's tie with a 2-0 aggregate victory over Cypriot side Apoel Nicosia. United also finished second at the group stage, before beating Saint-Etienne 4-0 on aggregate and getting past Rostov last month. Mourinho's side head into the match buoyed by the 3-0 victory at the Stadium of Light, a result which extended the Reds' unbeaten run in the Premier League to 21 games, while Anderlecht were held to a goalless draw at home to Gent on their most recent domestic outing.

We've met before, right? Yes. And though we've only come up against Anderlecht on six previous occasions, there have been some significant games between the teams. The Belgian side were our first-ever European opponents when United travelled to Brussels in September 1956, but it was the reverse fixture a fortnight later which will live long in the memory. In a game played at Manchester City's Maine Road (due to the absence of floodlights at Old Trafford), the Reds ran out 10-0 winners, with four goals coming from striker Dennis Viollet. After the victory - which remains the biggest in United's history - manager Matt Busby hailed the performance as "the finest exhibition of teamwork I had ever seen from any side either at club or international level". Our most recent encounter came during the Champions League group stages in 2000/01, when a hat-trick from Andy Cole set the tone for an eventual 5-1 win at Old Trafford, before a 2-1 defeat in Belgium a month later.

Who's their danger man? Anderlecht are a team brimming with young, talented footballers and several members of their first-team squad have reportedly attracted interest from English clubs. One such player is 19-year-old Youri Tielemans, a Belgian central midfielder who is already making waves for club and country. Tielemans became the youngest Belgian to play in the Champions League in October 2013 and scored three goals in this season’s Europa League group stages, before being given the captain’s armband for both legs of the Round of 32 tie against Zenit. "It's already extraordinary that we have been able to enjoy three seasons of such talent," Anderlecht’s sporting director Herman van Holsbeeck admitted in January, and it appears there’s plenty more to come from the youngster. Elsewhere, look out for striker Lukasz Teodorczyk; the Polish frontman has scored a hatful of goals since joining the club on loan from Dynamo Kiev last summer, including five in the Europa League.

Who else is in action? There are three other quarter-final ties taking place on Thursday evening, all of which also kick off at 20:05 BST...

Ajax v Schalke
Celta Vigo v Genk
Lyon v Besiktas

GET TO KNOW UNITED'S OPPONENTS ANDERLECHT

Manchester United make the trip to Brussels to face RSC Anderlecht in the Europa League on Thursday, but who are the Belgian side and what can the Reds expect in the quarter-final tie?

Who are they? Founded in 1908, Anderlecht play their football at the Constant Vanden Stock Stadium in Brussels, which first opened in 1983 and holds 21,845 fans for European matches. But the club are in the process of switching to a bigger home and are due to move to the 60,000-capacity Eurostadium, which will also be the home of the Belgium national team and host fixtures at Euro 2020, when construction work is completed in 2019. Anderlecht are the most successful Belgian club in history, with more European trophies (five) and Belgian top-flight title wins (33) than any other team. Their full name is Royal Sporting Club Anderlecht and their nickname is the 'Purple and Whites', which reflects the colours of the club's traditional home kit.

How did they get here? Anderlecht's European journey this season began as early as July in the Champions League but there was disappointment at the first hurdle as FC Rostov, whom the Reds beat last month to reach the last eight of the Europa League, claimed a 4-2 win over two legs in the third qualifying round tie. It meant the Belgians dropped into the secondary European competition and faced a play-off tie against Czech side Slavia Prague, which they easily navigated with a 6-0 aggregate win to reach the group stages. In Group C, they were pitted against German outfit Mainz 05, Gabala FC of Azerbaijan and French side Saint-Etienne, the latter of whom the Reds knocked out in the Round of 32 stage of the competition. Anderlecht progressed to the knockout stages in second place with a respectable record of 11 points from six games – winning three, drawing two and losing just once. They looked to be heading out in the Round of 16 after Russian outfit Zenit Saint Petersburg overturned a 2-0 first-leg defeat to lead 3-0 in the second leg, before a dramatic late header from Kiese Thelin took Anderlecht through on away goals. Apoel Nicosia of Cyprus presented a tough challenge in the last round but two 1-0 wins saw the Belgians advance to their first European quarter-final in 20 years.

What's their current form like? After narrowly finishing top of the newly-named Belgian First Division A in the regular league season, two points ahead of fierce rivals Club Brugge, Anderlecht have begun the Championship play-offs campaign, where the top six teams in the division play each other twice to determine who will qualify for next season’s Champions League and Europa League respectively. They've got off to a good start with four points from the first two games, a 2-1 win away at Zulte Waregem followed by a goalless draw at home to Gent last weekend. They have also fared well on home soil in Europe in recent months, winning five of their last six games.

Who's their boss? Anderlecht’s manager is Rene Weiler, who is in his first season in charge after replacing Albanian coach Besnik Hasi last summer. The 43-year-old spent his first two years of coaching with German second-tier outfit FC Nurnberg before arriving in Belgium. The former defender, who was capped once by Switzerland, established his reputation in his home country with Schaffhausen and Aarau.

Who are the players to look out for? Considered one of the brightest young prospects in world football, 19-year-old Belgian playmaker Youri Tielemans seems destined for the very top, with a number of top European clubs reportedly tracking his progress. An intelligent all-round midfielder with an excellent range of passing, Tielemans was voted Belgian Young Player of the Year in 2013 and 2014, and made his senior international debut last November. Captain Sofiane Hanni is one of the club's more creative players, with the French-born Algerian notching several assists already in this season's competition, and he was last season's Belgian Footballer of the Year after scoring an impressive 17 goals from midfield for former club KV Mechelen. The highly-rated Nicolae Stanciu became the most expensive signing made by a Belgian club when joining Anderlecht last summer from Steaua Bucharest in his native Romania, where he made a name for himself as a technically-sound player with an eye for goal, and is another player the Reds must be wary of.

Have they faced the Reds before? Well, Anderlecht were the opposition on a landmark occasion for the Reds in our first-ever European game back in September 1956, as goals in either half from Dennis Viollet and Tommy Taylor gave Matt Busby's team a 2-0 win in front of 35,000 fans at the former Emile Verse Stadium. The second leg of the preliminary round tie, however, was a memorable experience which went down in history as a rampant United annihilated the Belgians with a 10-0 win at Manchester City's former Maine Road ground, which remains the Reds' biggest competitive victory to date, to storm into the first-round proper of the European Cup.

What's their record like against English teams? It would be fair to say Anderlecht have a mixed record historically when it comes to facing opponents from England in Europe. The aforementioned demolition by the Reds aside, the Belgians have only won seven of their 32 games against English teams, drawing five and losing 20. They have also never tasted victory on English soil on 15 previous trips – including, most recently, a 2-1 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane in the Europa League group stages last season, having won by the same scoreline at home. However, Anderlecht have faced English opponents three times in major finals and achieved one notable triumph in their home city of Brussels, beating West Ham United 4-2 in a thrilling contest at Heysel Stadium. The others ended in disappointment: a 4-3 defeat by Arsenal over two legs in their first ever European final in 1970 and an agonising loss on penalties against Spurs in the 1984 UEFA Cup showpiece, following a 2-2 draw.

What's their overall history in Europe? Anderlecht have a chequered recent history in European competitions but enjoyed plenty of success during arguably the most successful period in the club's history, claiming five trophies on the continental stage between 1974 and 1984. During that memorable decade, the Purple and Whites won two European Cup Winners' Cups, two European Super Cups and one UEFA Cup. Meanwhile, Anderlecht’s last European quarter-final was in the 1996/97 UEFA Cup, where they lost to Inter Milan, just six years after being eliminated at the same stage by another Serie A side in Roma.
