CZECH CHALLENGE FOR UNITED RESERVES

Manchester United's Reserves return to action in the Premier League International Cup on Thursday night (kick-off 19:00 GMT) with Sparta Prague bringing a continental flavour to the proceedings at Leigh Sports Village.

The side from the Czech Republic lost 2-1 to Villarreal on Tuesday at St George's Park with Richard Sedlacek's late missed penalty proving costly. The result leaves holders Villarreal level on points with United but they have completed their three games.

Ro-Shaun Williams missed United's FA Youth Cup defeat to Southampton on Monday with a knee injury sustained in training but Callum Gribbin's withdrawal during the Old Trafford tie suggests he could be under consideration for the Reserves.

Interim coach Nicky Butt played with wing-backs at Chelsea in the 3-1 league defeat last time out and it will be interesting to see how the Reds line up in the live MUTV clash.

United finish off the Group B campaign with a game next Thursday at Leigh Sports Village against Middlesbrough, who currently have a 100 per cent record following two 1-0 victories.

Only the two best runners-up join the six group winners in the knockout stages.

Reserves: United 2 Sparta Prague 0

Premier League International Cup | Leigh Sports Village | Scorers: Harrop 21, Redmond 55

Manchester United made it two wins out of two in the Premier League International Cup, comfortably beating Sparta Prague to add to September's victory over Villarreal.

Joshua Harrop's goal in the 21st minute - on his 21st birthday - was enough to send the Reds into half-time in the ascendancy and Devonte Redmond's strike shortly after the break ensured Nicky Butt's team earned the victory their dominance merited.

A notable piece of United team news was the deployment of striker Demi Mitchell at left-back, while Sparta made only two changes to the line-up that started their 2-1 defeat to Villarreal just two days ago. That penultimate group match for the Czech side was played on the very neutral ground of St George's Park, Staffordshire.

Matty Willock was booked as early as the sixth minute after charging into the area and falling into the ground as a defender approached, with the referee deeming it to be simulation. Undeterred by his yellow card, the Reds midfielder was soon taking on the Sparta rearguard again but his shot at the end of a weaving run sailed high over the bar. Birthday boy Harrop had by then produced United's first effort on target with a low drive that forced a fine stop from Patrick Storc.

It seemed inevitable that Willock and Harrop would be involved when the Reds broke the deadlock and Matty made it happen with a perfectly-executed pass between two defenders, through to Josh for a jink around the keeper and a cool finish.

United almost made it 2-0 when Mitchell showed his attacking prowess by whipping in a cross from the left and Redmond's resulting header skimmed off the post.

At the other end, the Reds' centre-back pairing of Axel Tuanzebe and Regan Poole were imperiously marshalling the Czech attack. Even when one of the duo's headed clearances fell to Filip Havelka outside the area, there was still nothing for their keeper Kieran O'Hara to do - the resulting shot flew high into the red seats behind the goal.

The teams reemerged in teeming rain at the start of the second period but there was no let-up from United with the wet conditions, if anything, helping to put the visitors from Prague further on the back foot. The Reds were hungry for a second goal and it came after the instrumental Sean Goss switched the play with a pass out to the left. Mitchell showed electrifying pace to race beyond Karel Tvaroh's sliding challenge, reach the byline and cut the ball back for Redmond to beat Storc with a first-time stab.

Mitchell also tested Storc with a fiercely-struck shot, at the end of a flowing move he had started himself inside United's box - the Prague keeper parried well on that occasion, just as he had done to the other side of his goal when Willock's cross threatened to drift under the bar early in the half.

Sparta strived to end their involvement in the competition with a goal but when Havelka skied a free-kick and Matej Pulkrab headed over from Lukas Kajkovsky's right-flank cross, it seemed O'Hara would go home with his gloves barely marked by the ball. However, he did make one comfortable save in the dying moments when collecting a strike from the visitors' liveliest player Vaclav Dudl.

The Czech team's misery in the inclement Manchester weather was compounded by bookings for Daniel Kostl - for a foul on Harrop, who did well to complete the 90 minutes after a first-half hamstring scare - and for their captain Pulkrab.

Clearly the night in Leigh belonged to United and Butt's men can now look forward to a decisive final group game against table-topping Middlesbrough on Teesside next Thursday evening, three days before Christmas.

United:
O'Hara; Olosunde (El Fitouri), Tuanzebe, Poole, Mitchell; Willock, Goss; Harrop, McTominay, Kehinde (Gribbin); Redmond (Scott). Substitutes not used: M Johnstone, Doughty, Buffonge, Warren.

RESERVES FACE CRUCIAL FINAL TIE AT LEIGH

Manchester United's Reserves have a pre-Christmas outing on Thursday night against Middlesbrough in the Premier League International Cup.

The tie at Leigh Sports Village is the final Group B fixture and pits the top two sides in the table against each other. A draw would be sufficient for leaders United to qualify for the knockout stages but defeat would leave Nicky Butt's men relying on other results to see if six points is enough to progress as one of the two best second-placed sides.

Victories over holders Villarreal and Sparta Prague have left the Reds in pole position and the team has yet to concede a goal in the competition but Boro will provide a real test after also winning both of their games.

Demi Mitchell impressed in a new role at left-back against Sparta and it will be interesting to see if he is retained in that position, while Josh Harrop managed to overcome a hamstring problem during the 2-0 triumph. Axel Tuanzebe and Sean Goss were pictured training with the first-team squad this week but, of course, could still feature as key men for the Reserves.

The crucial match, which kicks off at 19:00 GMT, is being shown exclusively live on MUTV and it is the last fixture at Under-23 level until 9 January, when City provide the opposition in a Manchester derby at Leigh.

RESERVES: UNITED 2 MIDDLESBROUGH 2

Premier League International Cup | Leigh Sports Village | Scorers: Mitchell 59, Goss 72 pen | De Pena 63,83

Manchester United drew with Middlesbrough in the Premier League International Cup to clinch top spot in Group B and qualify for the knockout stages of the competition.

The visitors could also progress as one of the two best second-placed sides as they finished level on seven points with United, but Nicky Butt's side enjoyed a superior goal difference. After Aynsley Pears, son of ex-United and Boro keeper Stephen, saved Josh Harrop's first-half penalty, things really livened up after the break.

Demi Mitchell opened the scoring, only for Carlos de Pena to equalise, and the Uruguayan striker netted again with a free-kick following a successful Sean Goss strike from the spot.

Nicky Butt's side looked confident in possession from the outset and played lots of short, snappy passes. Although a couple of offside decisions went against the hosts in the opening stages, there were no real efforts on goal until Devonte Redmond's header from a Harrop centre forced a first save out of Pears in the 14th minute.

A couple of minutes later, the opening goal should have arrived when Goss's right-wing corner drifted dangerously across the six-yard box before Julien De Sart dived to commit a handball offence at the far post. Harrop has been flawless from the spot this term but, this time, his weak effort was saved by Pears, diving to his left.

Matthew Olosunde collected a Callum Gribbin pass and burst between two defenders to force a fine save out of Pears from a tight angle and, from the resulting corner, Scott McTominay had the ball in the net but was ruled offside.

Another corner from Goss failed to reach Regan Poole at full stretch while a rare attack from the Teessiders towards the end of the first half forced Sam Johnstone into action, with the keeper pushing away a Bryn Morris attempt following a free-kick.

Middlesbrough enjoyed their best spell at the start of the second half as they emerged fired up for the restart. Johnstone saved a De Pena header and Goss made a goal-saving intervention to divert Callum Cooke's effort off target.

So it was a little surprising the breakthrough came at the other end but it was a peach of a strike by Mitchell. The left-back received a pass from Gribbin, cut inside and bent a drive past Pears and in off the underside of the bar. However, the lead lasted only four minutes as, after Johnstone had already beaten out a Cooke shot, Jordan McGhee crossed for De Pena to tap home the equaliser.

A second penalty was awarded to United as Olosunde was sent flying by Matty Elsdon inside the box and Goss won a debate with Harrop over the responsibility of stepping up from 12 yards out before burying the spot-kick for his first goal of the season.

Harrop was booked for sparking a flare-up with a strong tackle on Robbie Tinkler and replaced soon afterwards by DJ Buffonge. Boro refused to concede defeat with Junior Mondal denied by Johnstone and close range. And the visitors got back on level terms again with seven minutes left as De Pena deceived Johnstone by swinging his free-kick directly into the goal at the keeper's near post.

McTominay was unable to finish off a decent chance, with Pears saving, as the Reds saw out the final minutes in convincing fashion to seal progress during this first entry into the competition.

United: S.Johnstone; Olosunde, Poole, Tuanzebe, Mitchell; Goss, Willock; Gribbin (Kehinde 68), McTominay, Harrop (Buffonge 75); Redmond (Scott 81). Subs not used: O’Hara, Warren, Doughty.

UNITED NAME SQUAD FOR UNDER-19 COMPETITION

Manchester United have confirmed a 13-man squad for this week's Sparkasse & VGH Cup tournament in Germany.

The players involved include Tahith Chong - the scorer of a stunning goal at Old Trafford in last month's FA Youth Cup defeat to Southampton - plus Angel Gomes and Ethan Hamilton, who both netted in the Under-18s' final fixture before Christmas, a thrilling 3-2 win at West Brom.

Academy coach Kieran McKenna is in charge of the team for the indoor Under-19s competition with the youngsters keen to show off their skills in a different environment.

United are in a group containing Mainz, Hamburg, Nieste/Staufenberg, Weper, Sparta Gottingen and Hainberg/Grone - the latter will provide the opposition in the opening match on Thursday night.

The event stretches into the weekend and the Reds are entering it for the first time after winning a similar tournament in 2015, when goalkeeper Joel Castro Pereira captained the side to success.

United: Ilias Moutha-Sebtaoui; Jake Barrett, Max Dunne, Lee O'Connor, George Tanner; Aidan Barlow, Indy Boonen, Tahith Chong, Angel Gomes, Ethan Hamilton, Callum Whelan; Joshua Bohui, Nishan Burkart.

RESERVES: UNITED 1 MAN CITY 3

Premier League 2 | Leigh Sports Village | Scorers: Goss 57 | Diaz 51, Buckley-Ricketts 60, Fernandes 71

Manchester United lost the Reserves derby 3-1 to City after being reduced to 10 men early on when Regan Poole was sent off.

Despite holding out until half-time, Brahim Diaz handed the Blues the lead and, although Sean Goss levelled, Isaac Buckley-Ricketts and Paolo Fernandes ensured victory for a team managed by ex-Red Simon Davies.

Soon after a break forward by Matthew Olosunde, it was always going to be an uphill battle for the hosts once Poole was dismissed after only 13 minutes. Referee Anthony Backhouse deemed the Welshman's tackle a two-footed one on Fernandes and, although there was not too much contact with the City man, the Blues' no.10 did take a blow to his right foot and hopped away from the incident.

Backhouse explained his decision to Poole and, following the red card, Nicky Butt replaced Callum Gribbin with Sadiq El Fitouri and moved Goss into a back three alongside Axel Tuanzebe and Olosunde. City almost broke through on 21 minutes when Diaz's brilliant dribble to the edge of the box ended with a shot that flicked Joel Pereira's right-hand post on its way behind.

Diaz was fed inside the box for another chance that forced a fine stop out of Pereira, in his first game back after a loan spell with Belenenses, as he blocked with his legs. With Goss using his intelligence to good effect in his new role and the visitors passing with little penetration, United managed to hold on with that Pereira stop from Diaz the only shot on target in the first half.

The Reds were understandably limited as an attacking force and there were a few nervous moments as half-time approached, particularly when Jadon Sancho worked a one-two and prodded towards Pereira's near post, only for the keeper to stick out a foot and get a key touch to divert it for a corner.

It took City only six minutes to score following the restart, though, as Fernandes got away on the left, tricked Olosunde with a clever dummy and cut the ball back for Diaz to slip a precise finish into the bottom corner of the net.

Olosunde was forced into a vital clearance when United were down to nine men as Demi Mitchell received treatment but a first real United attack of any note since the red card yielded an equaliser. The move started with a Pereira header outside his box before Josh Harrop fed Mitchell on the left. The full-back's skill took him into a position to lay the ball back for Goss, who supplied a perfect side-footed finish.

Parity was only restored for three minutes, however, as the home side lost the ball in attack and were hit by a swift counter, as Fernandes broke. Diaz was stopped by a superb Pereira save in a one-on-one situation, only for Buckley-Ricketts to fire through two players on the line with the rebound.

Goss tested Angus Gunn after showing some neat footwork inside the box but the game was beyond Nicky Butt's side when Olosunde was dispossessed by Fernandes on the edge of his own box and the Spaniard showed no mercy by rifling a third past Pereira.

Harrop drifted a shot wide and Matty Willock drilled off target from a promising position as there was a glimpse of what might have been had the Reds had a full complement of players. However, Sancho hit a post in the closing stages and Butt's side need to recover quickly in next Monday's trip to Anfield to face Liverpool.

United: J. Pereira; Olosunde (Warren 82), Poole, Tuanzebe, Mitchell; Goss, Willock; Gribbin (El Fitouri 18), Redmond (Kehinde 76), Harrop; McTominay. Subs not used: O'Hara, Scott.

Manchester United U23 1-3 Manchester City U23: Paolo Fernandes wraps up victory for visitors against 10-man neighbours

* Regan Poole was sent off early on for Manchester United Under 23s on Monday
* Brahim Diaz gave Manchester City the lead before Sean Goss hit back for hosts
* Isaac Buckley-Ricketts put City in front before Paolo Fernandes added a third

The way this was won will have Pep Guardiola purring when Manchester City’s manager is handed the edited highlights.

Manchester United were briefly in the ascendancy having equalised through Sean Goss early in the second half. The agitated Nicky Butt urged his side forward in search of another before Devante Redmond loosely gave away possession 80 yards from their own goal.

From there City were off, back to front and in Joel Pereira’s net within five seconds. Jadon Sancho - astonishingly still only 16 - started the swift counter, before moving on to Paolo Fernandes.

City flew, Brahim Diaz almost rounding the goalkeeper, the ball eventually dropping for 18-year-old Isaac Buckley-Ricketts. His effort flashed past Pereira, back from a loan spell at Belenenses this week to facilitate Sam Johnstone’s switch to Aston Villa.

Guardiola will certainly be shown that blistering few moments of pace on the ball and movement off it. This is what he means when the Catalan talks of his desire to see every level of their academy playing as the first team is trying.

That quartet were brilliant as the blue half of the this city won the mini-derby, Fernandes smashing a third late on.

They had enjoyed a man advantage for much of the night at Leigh Sports Village, however, after Reegan Poole saw red for a two-footed lunge on the fleet-footed Fernandes in the 13th minute.

Tempers momentarily flared and Butt - United 23s’ interim boss - did not look at the central defender as he trudged off.

United had struggled to exert much pressure before then but held on until just after the break. Fernandes wonderfully drove towards the byline, bamboozling Sadiq El Fitouri in the 50th minute and found Diaz to stroke back where the cross had come from.

Diaz earlier clipped a post when dancing past three home defenders after coming away from his station on the right. City’s attackers are frightening when they get going.

Despite going down to 10-men, Manchester United found an equaliser through Sean Goss

City did concede six minutes after taking the lead though, with the impressive Sean Goss breaking from midfield to latch onto Demetri Mitchell’s fine cross and stab beyond Angus Gunn.

The animated Butt punched the air but would only see his side level until the hour mark as City capitalised on Redmond’s laxness in possession.

Matthew Olusunde was then punished by Fernandes on attempting to dribble out from the back, while Sancho struck a post when slipped through by Diaz. The second-half performance was truly slick, with United obviously inhibited by the early sending off.

City boss Simon Davies left Leigh happy but Guardiola’s real interest will be peaked when he watches that fabulous five seconds.

Tensions arose when Regan Poole was sent off for a challenge on Fernandes

UNITED RESERVES FACE LIVERPOOL AT ANFIELD

Hot on the heels of the draw between Manchester United and Liverpool's senior sides at Old Trafford, the two clubs meet at Reserves level on Monday night at Anfield.

The Premier League 2 encounter provides the perfect platform for the young players at both sides to express themselves with United in the middle of a tough month, with leaders Everton still to come.

Callum Gribbin will hope to start again after his previous outing in the defeat to Manchester City was cut short prematurely when coach Nicky Butt was forced to change his formation after Regan Poole's early red card. Gribbin scored a hat-trick in the 3-3 away draw with Liverpool at Under-18 level earlier in the season.

Ro-Shaun Williams and Joe Riley were still sidelined for the derby with the Blues and Butt was naturally disappointed that the one-man disadvantage was always going to count against his charges.

"The game plan went out of the window straight away," said Butt. "Gribbo had to come off, unfortunately, as he's one of the more attacking players, but we had to consolidate while we got our football going again.

"We need to learn to keep the ball better. We've got to develop players for United who are winning because, ultimately, that is what this club does historically: win trophies and win things. It's part of the development; when you go to 10 men, you've got to put in a real shift and learn your craft.

"It's a tough one against Liverpool but that's what we want. We want to play against the big teams and test ourselves. Monday is a test again but it's one I'm looking forward to."

Manchester United's reserves show Jose Mourinho's side how it's done in 1-0 win against Liverpool counterparts

* Manchester United reserves beat Liverpool's 1-0 with dramatic late goal
* Matty Willock scored with header in stoppage time to claim bragging rights
* Match was tightly fought contest with United coming on strong in final minutes

Manchester United's reserves managed to show Jose Mourinho's senior side how it is supposed to be done against Liverpool.

A Matty Willock header in stoppage time secured Nicky Butt's team a win against their Merseyside counterparts at Anfield.

Sean Goss was the man to provide the killer ball and atoned for an earlier penalty miss, saved by goalkeeper Shamal George.

Matthew Willock (centre) headed in the winner for Manchester United's reserves

The clash between the old rivals was a fiercely fought contest in a largely even affair

The first half was a cagey affair with both teams battling hard for ascendency but failing to create any clear-cut opportunities.

Jack Dunn and Brooks Lennon offered some threat for the hosts in the second 45 minutes as Josh Harrop and Goss continued to impress at the other end.

Gribbin latched on to a Goss pass and was upended in the box for a penalty with 15 minutes remaining.

Where Manchester United failed to be Liverpool at Old Trafford their reserves fared better

George parried the side-footed spot kick away as the home side breathed a sigh of relief.

With stamina beginning to wane for both teams, the match started to open up with more room for the attacking players.

Ultimately it was a free-kick which proved decisive as Goss whipped a ball perfectly onto the head of Willock who wheeled away to celebrate the dramatic winner.

Tampaknya tim reserves lebih beruntung dibanding tim senior

RESERVES: LIVERPOOL 0 UNITED 1

Premier League 2 | Anfield | Scorers: Willock 93

Matty Willock rewarded Manchester United for a strong ending to a tight affair against Liverpool at Anfield by heading home the winner in stoppage time.

Sean Goss, who had earlier seen a penalty saved by Shamal George, provided the assist as Nicky Butt's men showed great resilience and stamina to upset the Merseysiders.

The two teams cancelled each other out completely in the first half with an uneventful 45 minutes punctuated only by a series of free-kicks. Joe Riley was back after an injury lay-off to provide some verve from right-back but there was nothing to choose between the sides in the opening exchanges.

Matty Willock did have a shot blocked at source in the 15th minute by Tom Brewitt after a sweeping pass by Axel Tuanzebe picked out Callum Gribbin on the right and the midfielder played a neat ball inside. That was the closest United came to scoring in the opening half with even the corners at both ends terribly disappointing.

The hosts fared little better with Sam Hart, a former United schoolboy, blazing into the stands from long range after shrugging Gribbin aside to at least register a shot to count in the match statistics. The Hart attempt came four minutes before the break and it is fair to say everybody present at Anfield was hoping for more action in the second half.

Liverpool made two changes at the interval and started to get on top with Jack Dunn producing a wild effort and Brooks Lennon failing to trouble Joel Pereira, who dived to produce a comfortable save. Matthew Olosunde was introduced for Devonte Redmond but Pereira was able to continue despite requiring treatment after being clattered into by Nathan Phillips.

Pereira was definitely the busier of the two keepers, clutching Olosunde's header towards his own goal, and also the first genuine shot on target by Matthew Virtue on 65 minutes. It sparked some pressure from Butt's side with Gribbin latching onto a Josh Harrop through ball, only to side-foot his finish too close to George. Sean Goss then fired a free-kick off target after he was fouled by Brewitt on the edge of the box when moving onto another Harrop pass.

Things really heated up when Gribbin chased a Goss pass and ran clean through on goal before being up-ended by substitute Kane Lewis in the 75th minute. The home side accused the midfielder of diving but the referee pointed to the spot and Lewis escaped with a yellow card rather than a red. With the hosts still fuming, Goss stepped up but was denied by a fine one-handed stop by George.

The match finally opened up as Corey Whelan tested Pereira and Olosunde produced an inviting cross at the other end that was crying out for a finish. United grew stronger as the half wore on and looked more like the champions of last season. Tuanzebe's lung-busting run took him deep into opposition territory, only for his cut-back to fall a little behind DJ Buffonge and the substitute's shot was deflected wide.

From the corner, Tuanzebe managed to head goalwards, only for the ball to be cleared but there was still a sting in the tail. The visitors won a free-kick on the left and Goss delivered, right onto the head of Willock, who nodded home to finally break the deadlock. Leaders Everton are next up but this result will cheer everybody associated with United.

United: J.Pereira; Riley (Kehinde 85), Tuanzebe, Poole, Mitchell; Goss, Redmond (Olosunde 56); Gribbin (Buffonge 85), Willock, Harrop; McTominay. Subs not used: O’Hara, Scott.
