Default Re: [EL] FC Rostov V Manchester United

Is Rostov our toughest European away?

Manchester United will be cheered on by 238 ticket-holding fans during Thursday’s Europa League tie against FC Rostov, which emphasises the difficulty of the journey to Russia.

This Round of 16 tie was drawn out of the hat less than two weeks ago on Friday 24 February, and that gave match-going fans very little time to make travel arrangements. Specifically, that included the task of gaining a Russian visa at least seven days before this week's first leg in Eastern Europe.

The tally of 238 is among United's smallest travelling contingents in recent European competition and less than a third of the 900 fans who made the trip to Odessa for this season’s Group A win at Zorya Luhansk.

As recently as the 2015/16 season, some 805 hardy supporters were in attendance for the Champions League draw at CSKA Moscow, while 804 later witnessed the Europa League tie at FC Midtjylland.

A BUSY TIME FOR UNITED’S AWAY FANS
United returned to Old Trafford on Saturday following three vintage away days at Ewood Park, Stade Geoffroy-Guichard and Wembley Stadium – and 720 committed Reds made it to every game!

Nick Howard, a 25-year-old supporter from Cheadle Hulme (pictured third from right), was among that devoted group who saw the consecutive wins over Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup fifth round, Saint-Etienne in the Europa League Round of 32 and, of course, Southampton in the EFL Cup final. He spoke to United Review to reflect on his memorable week of match-going action.

“I have gone home and away for years,” Nick told us. “I've grown up watching us win all sorts of trophies but I can honestly say that was one of my greatest-ever weeks following the Reds.

“Ewood Park was very nostalgic because that was my first-ever away day many years ago, and we obviously won the 19th title there. There was a great atmosphere in the Golden Cup Inn and the noise inside the stadium was great, even with the home fans protesting at the Venky’s ownership.

“We started our journey to France by flying to Paris, taking a train to Lyon and then boarding another to Saint-Etienne. We mixed with local fans and traded football stories, before experiencing one of the best atmospheres of my life. Yes, their flags and chants were choreographed, but there was a real sense of community and they have a great fanbase for a provincial town. I loved it!

“Then there was Wembley, of course. We got the train from Stockport on Sunday morning and later sat in the singing section to see Zlatan win us the cup. Watching us lift a trophy was a reward for all the hard miles! I was physically drained on Monday, with a hoarse voice in meetings, but I had a huge smile after a big week with United. It cost me £1,000 all in, but I’d happily do it all over again.”

Due to the short notice, Nick was unable to organise his trip to Rostov and is envious of his two friends who are travelling this week. "I was extremely jealous when they were telling me about their plans," he says. "I'm gutted I'm not going myself, but the turnaround was too quick. I'm already eyeing up flights for the quarter-finals and the rest of the competition."

UNITED'S TRAVELLING SQUAD FOR FC ROSTOV TIE

Jose Mourinho has named a 20-man travelling squad for Manchester United's Europa League match against FC Rostov on Thursday evening.

The Reds flew out of Manchester Airport, bound for Russia, on Tuesday afternoon in preparation for the Round of 16 first leg at the Olimp-2 Stadium, where kick-off is scheduled for 18:00 GMT.

In this first-ever meeting between United and Rostov, Mourinho is keen to see his side establish what could be a crucial advantage ahead of next Thursday's second leg at Old Trafford.

UNITED'S TRAVELLING SQUAD IN FULL

De Gea, Romero, O'Hara; Valencia, Jones, Rojo, Smalling, Blind, Darmian, Young; Carrick, Herrera, Fellaini, Pogba, Mata, Lingard, Mkhitaryan; Martial, Rashford, Ibrahimovic.

TELL US MORE ABOUT THE GROUP

Eric Bailly has not travelled to Russia due to the one-match suspension that he earned as a result of his dismissal in United's last European match, away to Saint-Etienne.

Luke Shaw and Wayne Rooney are not in the group after starting against Bournemouth on Saturday, while Bastian Schweinsteiger has stayed at home, presumably with the minor injury that the boss revealed last Friday.

On a positive front, Henrikh Mkhitaryan has returned to the group and could feature for the first time since suffering an injury moments after scoring the only goal in last month's win in France.

Meylan Fredy Ismawan - detikSport

Wayne Rooney not included in Manchester United squad heading to Rostov for UEFA Europa League tie but Henrikh Mkhitaryan does make trip

* Manchester United are flying out to Rostov for their Europa League tie
* Captain Wayne Rooney not included in the 20-man travelling squad
* Henrikh Mkhitaryan has recovered well enough from his injury to travel
* Eric Bailly is suspended for the first leg of the last 16 tie at the Olimp-2 Stadium

Wayne Rooney has not been included in the Manchester United squad travelling to Russia for their UEFA Europa League tie with Rostov.

The United captain was not among the 20-player party who flew out of Manchester Airport, bound for Rostov-on-Don in south-west Russia, on Tuesday afternoon.

Rooney may be needed when United play Chelsea in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup on Monday night, because Zlatan Ibrahimovic has accepted a three-match ban following his elbow on Bournemouth's Tyrone Mings at the weekend.

Wayne Rooney drives to Manchester United's training ground at Carrington on Tuesday morning - but he won't be making the trip to Rostov in the UEFA Europa League

Left-back Luke Shaw and midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger are also not included, while defender Eric Bailly is suspended following his red card in the second leg of United's last-32 tie with Saint-Etienne.

However, Jose Mourinho and his team are boosted by the return of Henrikh Mkhitaryan following the hamstring injury the Armenian suffered in France.

26-goal leading scorer Ibrahimovic is also included as he remains eligible for European competition despite his domestic suspension.

Rostov is uncharted territory for the Reds, though it is around 470km from Volgograd, where United played in the UEFA Cup back in 1995. Their other three visits to the country have been to Moscow.

United will play at the 15,000-capacity Olimp-2 Stadium in Rostov-on-Don on Thursday night, with around 400 of their fans making the round trip of some 3,744 miles from Manchester.

Club officials have been warned not to wear colours of attract attention to themselves while in Rostov for fear of being targeted by hooligans.

Russia has a serious hooligan problem and United officials are conscious that English fans may be set upon following events in Marseille at the European Championship last year.

The travelling fans have been told to remain on two streets, which will be guarded by police, and to use the shuttle buses laid on to escort them to the stadium.

Rostov, who are currently seventh in the Russian Premier League table, thrashed bottom side Tom Tomsk 6-0 on their return following the winter break on Friday night.

The club qualified for the Champions League for the first time this season, having beaten Anderlecht and Ajax in qualifying rounds.

They ultimately finished third in Group D below Bayern Munich - whom they beat 3-2 at home - and Atletico Madrid, but ahead of PSV Eindhoven.

In the Europa League round of 32, they beat Czech side Sparta Prague 5-1 on aggregate.

The long distance draw is something of a nightmare for United, who play at Mourinho's former club Chelsea in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup on Monday night and then play the return with Rostov at Old Trafford next Thursday night.

United have included 20-year-old goalkeeper Kieran O'Hara in their 20-man squad.

The Manchester-born stopper has yet to make a first-team appearance for the Old Trafford club, whom he joined as a youth team player in 2012 from local club Urmston Town.

During his time with the club, O'Hara has had loan spells at Trafford, AFC Fylde, Morecambe, Stockport County and Morecambe.

Rostov manager Ivan Daniliants tells Manchester United their pitch was WORSE when they beat Sparta Prague

* Jose Mourinho has criticised the state of the the pitch at the Olimp-2 Stadium
* Rostov boss Ivan Daniliants says it was worse when they beat Sparta Prague
* Daniliants has told Mourinho that players can get injured on any type of pitch
* Manchester United face Rostov in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 tie

Rostov manager Ivan Daniliants has responded to Jose Mourinho's criticism of the pitch at the Olimp-2 Stadium by telling the Manchester United manager that it was worse when Sparta Prague played in the last round of the Europa League.

Daniliants also reminded Mourinho that injuries happen in all football games amid concerns that United's stars could be hurt in Thursday's last 16 first-leg tie in Russia.

Mourinho was fiercely critical of the playing surface when United inspected it on Wednesday morning before training, but Daniliants insisted that it was UEFA's decision to go ahead with the game.

Referring to Rostov's 4-0 win at home Sparta in mid-February, he said: 'There were no incidents on this pitch before because we already played against Sparta Prague and the pitch was actually worse.

'We understand that it's not a decision of our club it's UEFA's decision to play match. For sure we would like to play on better pitch like Wembley.

The pitch at the Olimp-2 Stadium is in poor condition ahead of Thursday's Europa League tie

'We understand that players can be injured. Football is a contact sport and maybe players get injured anyway on the best pitches with the best weather conditions. We would like to play on best fields but it's not our decision.

'It will be the same pitch for Rostov as Manchester United. Yes we understand that our rivals are not used to playing in a pitch of this condition, we could see that on TV at Wembley or Manchester. But it will be the same reality for us as them.'

Rostov manager Ivan Daniliants says their pitch was worse when they beat Sparta Prague

On the match itself, Daniliants added: 'All the players are preparing for the game tomorrow and I will decide my line-up tomorrow.

'For us, all the matches in the qualifying for the Champions League and the group stage were very important. We understand the level of our opponent level is higher than our level.'

Manchester United's Europa League match against Rostov WILL go ahead despite pitch complaint, say UEFA

* Manchester United face Rostov in the last 16 of the Europa League on Thursday
* The team have arrived in Russia to prepare for the game and have complained about the state of the pitch at the Stadion Olimp 2
* Jose Mourinho has said: 'It's still hard for me to believe that we are going to play'
* UEFA say the game will proceed, even if the surface isn't in a 'perfect condition'

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho's wish to have the Europa League clash at Rostov called off due to the state of the pitch has fallen on deaf ears, with UEFA confirming it will go ahead as planned despite the surface not being in 'perfect condition'.

Having described the last-16 tie as a 'bad draw in every aspect', the United manager's feelings only worsened upon inspection of the Olimp-2 stadium surface ahead of the first leg.

A close up of the pitch Olimp-2 stadium surface that United will play on in two days' time

Mourinho compared the pitch to the Bird's Nest quagmire that saw United's money-spinning pre-season friendly against Manchester City in Beijing called off last summer.

But United will have to play on this sandy, loose surface as UEFA has confirmed the last-16 first leg will go ahead as planned.

A statement from European football's governing body to Press Association Sport said: 'A pitch inspection has been carried out by the match officials on Wednesday.

'The playing surface may not be in perfect condition, but has been deemed playable. The match will go ahead as scheduled.'

Such news is unlikely to surprise Mourinho given United have already made the long schlep to Russia, yet it will no doubt stick in the craw given his misgivings ahead of the tie.

'It's still hard for me to believe that we are going to play (there),' United's visibly-angered manager said at the pre-match press conference.

'I know that we have to, but it is hard for me to believe we are going to play (on Thursday) on that field - if you can call it a field.

'And I don't know what team to play, really. I don't know if Henrikh Mkhitaryan is going to play, I don't know.

'I have now a lot to think (about) because I was expecting something more playable.

'In a very similar pitch in the summer in China, we and Manchester City decided not to play. But it looks like we have to play.'

This is not the first time Mourinho has been irked by UEFA's decision to deem a surface playable in United's Europa League run.

The Portuguese was not happy with the governing body for making United play the group-stage decider at Zorya Luhansk on a frozen pitch and was unimpressed by the surface in St Etienne last month.

'I didn't have any contact with anyone until now (about the pitch),' Mourinho said of his communication with UEFA before the press conference.

'I just had a quick contact with one gentleman from UEFA when I was looking at the pitch.

'And when I told him about my concerns, the gentleman just told me, 'The players are insured, if something happens no problem'.'

It is a claim as extraordinary as the state of the pitch that United trained on ahead of the match.

Assistant manager Rui Faria posed for a photo with a section of the turf in disbelief, while bemused players Marcos Rojo and Ander Herrera bounced the ball on the rock-hard surface.

Rostov trained at their nearby training ground in order to avoid unnecessary damage to the Olimp-2 surface, which defender Daley Blind acknowledged was far from ideal for player safety and performance.

'I've just been outside on the pitch and to be honest it's not the best,' he said. 'It's not good. Maybe the quality of the game will be a bit different.

'But it doesn't have to be an excuse for us. We have to concentrate and play the game and try to win - that's what we're here for.

'The pitch is not good, maybe for safety as well. But that's not what you have in your mind.

'You have to be fully concentrated and focused on the game.

'In the end it's not an excuse. We want to try to play a good game. That's what we're here for and that's the most important thing.'

Seeing the pitch first-hand has Mourinho reconsidering his team selection, with the United boss only confirming that top scorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic, banned for three domestic matches, will start on Thursday.

It is shaping up to be a difficult night against a Rostov side that have already beaten Bayern Munich and Ajax at the Olimp-2 stadium this season.

A sell-out crowd lies in wait and Rostov manager Ivan Daniliants cared little for Mourinho's complaints about the pitch.

'There were no incidents on this pitch before because we already played against Sparta Prague and the pitch was actually worse,' he said.

'We understand that it's not a decision of our club, it's UEFA's decision to play match. For sure we would like to play on better pitch like Wembley.'
