Re: [UEL] Manchester United vs Ajax Amsterdam
Manchester United will play in their blue kit for the Europa League final against Ajax... just as they did in 1968 when they beat Benfica at Wembley
* Manchester United take on Ajax in the Europa League final on Wednesday * United have been drawn as the away side for the fixture in Stockholm * Ajax will walk on to the pitch in their famous red and white strip * United won their first European Cup playing in blue in 1968 against Benfica Manchester United will take on Ajax in the Europa League final wearing their blue kit after being drawn as the away team. Wednesday's match-up in Stockholm will decide which of the two sides will be competing in next season's Champions League. Ajax will walk on to the pitch of Stockholm's Friends Arena in their famous red and white stripes. It shouldn't be viewed as a disadvantage for United, though. They won their first European final in 1968 against Benfica wearing blue. Bobby Charlton scored twice, with George Best and Brian Kidd getting one each, as United triumphed 4-1 at Wembley. Although manager Jose Mourinho hasn't spoken about good or bad omens, he believes Wednesday night will be the culmination of a draining season. Manchester United will play in their blue kit for the Europa League final on Wednesday He said: 'Everybody goes. We have a few on crutches but everybody goes. 'A fantastic group of players with fantastic spirit. A difficult run and lots of matches. 'We spent more time travelling and in hotels than at home because 60-something matches means 140 days in hotels. 'So half the year we spent together and that's only possible when the spirit is amazing. 'So everyone is going to be there. A few we have on crutches. Ashley Young for sure, Marcos Rojo, Zlatan Ibrahimovic. But we all go together.' Code:

Re: [UEL] Manchester United vs Ajax Amsterdam
UEFA STATEMENT ON STOCKHOLM FINAL SECURITY Following the terrible incident at the Manchester Arena, UEFA has released the following statement regarding security at Wednesday's UEFA Europa League final in Stockholm, Sweden... "There is currently no specific intelligence which might suggest that any of the UEFA Europa League Final activities in Stockholm may be the target of attacks. "UEFA has been closely working with local authorities and the Swedish FA for many months and the terrorist risk had been taken into account since the very beginning of the project. Furthermore, a number of additional security measures were implemented following the attacks in Stockholm last April. "Due to the tight security arrangements, UEFA urges fans to arrive at the stadium as early as possible, as detailed checks will be made at the entrances, resulting in potential delays in accessing the stadium." www.manutd.com |

Re: [UEL] Manchester United vs Ajax Amsterdam
United arrive in Stockholm
Having expressed his sincere condolences for those affected by the tragedy in Manchester, Jose Mourinho talked on Tuesday about the job his players have to do in the UEFA Europa League final. The Reds arrived in Stockholm in mid-afternoon and continued preparations for the final with a visit to the Friends Arena, the venue for Wednesday’s match with AFC Ajax. Mourinho and his playing squad took part in a walk around the ground, joined by the suspended Eric Bailly and the injured Marcos Rojo, Luke Shaw and Ashley Young. United’s usual pre-match press conference did not take place after the club took the decision to cancel it under the circumstances. Earlier, the Reds’ manager, coaches and players had paid an emotional tribute to the victims of the Manchester Arena attack with a minute's silence at the Aon Training Complex. Ajax’s evening training session at the Friends Arena was also preceded by their players and staff bowing their heads quietly as a mark of respect. Ed Woodward, United’s executive vice-chairman, spoke to MUTV and revealed there will be another minute’s silence before the match on Wednesday night, and confirmed the players will wear black armbands. Meanwhile, back at Old Trafford, the club confirmed that the Megastore, Museum, Red Cafe and Stadium Tour would remain closed for a second day, on Wednesday, the day of the final. While the people of Manchester remain very much in the minds of Jose and his players, attentions will turn to the UEFA Europa League final on Wednesday and the conclusion of the team's 2016/17 campaign. Manchester United squad vs Ajax revealed
Man Utd players have arrived in Stockholm for the Europa League final vs Ajax and Jose Mourinho's walkabout confirmed his squad. Jose Mourinho has taken a 20-man Manchester United squad to Stockholm for the Europa League final against Ajax. Antonio Valencia has travelled after he was rested for the last three Premier League fixtures of the season and Timothy Fosu-Mensah could make the matchday squad after he came through unscathed on his only league start of the campaign. Axel Tuanzebe, who has lined up in the last four league fixtures, also flew over with United while injured trio Luke Shaw, Ashley Young and Marcos Rojo were in attendance on crutches. However, there was no sign of Zlatan Ibrahimovic as the United squad entered the stadium after Mourinho insisted he would travel to his homeland for the Wednesday night final. "Everybody goes," Mourinho said on Friday. "We have a few on crutches but everybody goes. Fantastic group of players, fantastic spirit since the beginning of the season, different run, lots of matches. Quote:

The club decided against holding a pre-match press conference in the wake of the attack on Manchester on Monday night. Quote:
Uefa confirmed a minute's silence would be held before the final and United will don black armbands in memory of the victims. Ajax coach Peter Bosz showed empathy with United's situation "What happened yesterday evening in Manchester is something we all feel in Ajax and on behalf of all of us at Ajax we express our sympathies with the victims that fell," Bosz said. "The feeling that prevails is the final does not have the glow it should have. "Tomorrow evening should be a football feast but because of the events in Manchester we are affected. It is horrible. My sympathies are heartfelt." Quote:
"It affects us but I try to let it affect us as little as possible. I say you can only be nervous about things you can control and these are things we can not control." When Bosz was asked if the game should go ahead, he replied: "That is not up to us. I am just a coach and other people have to decide. I am here for the game and it is terrible but it is up to other people to decide that." In a statement, Uefa said: "Following last night's attack in Manchester, Uefa has confirmed that a minute's silence will be observed prior to the Uefa Europa League final in Stockholm on Wednesday night. "The opening ceremony will also be considerably reduced as a mark of respect for the victims of the Manchester attack." Re: [UEL] Manchester United vs Ajax Amsterdam
FINAL OPPONENTS AJAX: FIVE THINGS WE LEARNED Manchester United's Europa League final opponents Ajax conducted a press conference and open training session at the Friends Arena on Tuesday evening. ManUtd.com was there to pick out the key points... AJAX’S THOUGHTS WITH MANCHESTER Ajax coach Peter Bosz began his press conference by addressing the assembled media. “I’d like to say something about what happened in Manchester yesterday,” he began in English. “I’ll do it in Dutch because I want to find the right words, and that’s already difficult.” He continued in Dutch: “Our thoughts are with the victims and their families. The terrible events have cast a shadow over the game. Of course, it will be a match that both teams want to win, but it will not be the football festival everyone hoped for.” The Ajax players went on to take part in a period of silence before their open training session at the Friends Arena. UEFA have confirmed there will be a minute’s silence before the final, the planned opening ceremony has been considerably reduced and both teams will wear black armbands. DOLBERG IS THE PLAYER TO WATCH Kasper Dolberg was an Under-19 player at the start of the season but is now Ajax’s top scorer with 22 goals. “His development has been incredible – he’s still only 19 but has big potential,” said Bosz. Asked whether he could be the new Zlatan Ibrtahimovic, the coach replied: “I hope not because I hate comparisons – I don’t believe there’s another Zlatan or [Dennis] Bergkamp. Kasper has his own identity, personality and qualities and I’m glad of it.” ‘WE’LL PLAY OUR OWN WAY’ “We can only beat Manchester United if we play our own game,” declared Bosz. “We’ve developed a style of playing this season that I’d call the ‘Ajax way’ and if we do that tomorrow, we have a chance.” Midfielder Lasse Schone added: “We’re two different teams with different styles of football but we have to be true to ourselves. We’ve shown throughout the season that we can handle the pressure.” YOUNGSTERS NOT OVERAWED Ajax’s vibrant team gave a glimpse of the quick, forward-thinking game they could play tonight during an open training session in which they showed plenty of tricks, flicks and pace. Ex-Reds goalkeeper Raimond van der Gouw, who is working as a pundit with MUTV in Stockholm, told us he’s a fan of Ajax stopper Andre Onana, describing him as an “explosive sweeper keeper”. The 21-year-old Cameroonian spent a lot of the training session practising his footwork and making close-range saves. IBRA WILL BE MISSED Ibrahimovic is ruled out of a meeting with his former club in his homeland but he's set to be in Stockholm to support the Reds, along with fellow absentees Marcos Rojo, Luke Shaw and Ashley Young. “Zlatan is a part of Ajax history,” said Bosz. “He’s had an unbelievable career and he’s still performing for a big club at his age. He should have played but he’s injured – that’s a fact. We’ll miss him tomorrow.” www.manutd.com |
