DE GEA COULD FACE THE GUNNERS

Louis van Gaal is hopeful goalkeeper David De Gea will return to face Arsenal on Sunday after missing Manchester United's last three games.

The Spain international was injured in the warm-up of the Reds' Europa League first leg tie away to Midtjylland eight days ago and has since been receiving treatment.

Van Gaal said at the time he believed De Gea's problem was not too serious and the manager hopes he will be able to call upon the stopper at Old Trafford this weekend, but there remains a doubt over defender Chris Smalling, who sat out Thursday night's 5-1 second-leg win over the Danish side.

"I expect [David can return] because I saw the way he was today," said van Gaal during a briefing with reporters after Thursday night's win. "Chris is a question mark, but you never know," he added.

Further question marks remain over the fitness of Anthony Martial, who the Reds lost in the warm-up before the second leg, but there was some positive injury news with the return to action of Marcos Rojo after nearly three months out, and both Antonio Valencia and Marouane Fellaini are seemingly not too far away from full fitness either.

Asked whether Martial would be available against Arsene Wenger's side, van Gaal admitted: "I don’t know because it has happened before the match. I’ve talked with him. I have talked with the physiotherapist that already had control of him. I cannot say, but it is not as heavy as everybody thinks, but you never know.

"I’m very happy with Marcos that he played 10 or 15 minutes and how he showed already his form and shape, he was very good. But I have to build him up in the games and that’s not so easy, because he only had two training sessions with me. On the first day, he was with the second team and, on the second day, he was with us. So I take also a risk to do that, but I think that I have to do that now with 15 minutes and then 30 minutes and like that and I hope we can build him up.

"Valencia is also coming back and Fellaini too - in the month of March, a lot of players are coming back and then we have a strong selection again."

Hahaha iya, pemain muda dapat berkah graduated ke tim utama karena banyaknya pemain utama yang cedera akibat kelelahan.

Btw mungkin ceritanya bakal beda kalau Martial ga cedera pas pemanasan, bisa saja United ga lolos UEL & semalem kalah lawan Arsenal

Sebenarnya nggak salah2 juga punya skuat minim. Tapi manajer musti pinter2 fisik dan mental pemainnya. Rotasi pemain jadi kewajiban menurutku. Bukan hanya demi menjaga fisik saja tapi mental juga. Jangan sampe pemain jadi jenuh yang malah membuat performanya stagnan atau malah drop.

Sejauh ini Van Gaal hanya menggunakan pemain itu2 saja. Contoh paling tampak ya duo CB Smalling dan Blind. Smalling nyaris main terus musim ini. Blind malah lebih parah. Jadi nggak heran klo sekarang mereka kecapean dan mudah cedera.

Klo aku bilang dulu pas pertandingan piala FA, aku menunggu ada junior yang tampil. Bukan hanya demi kesempatan pemain muda tapi agar pemain senior bisa istirahat. Ternyata terus main dan main terus.

Donald Love became the latest defender to join Manchester United's lengthy injury list when he limped off playing for the Under 21s on Monday.

The 21-year-old full back, who had made his debut in the 2-1 defeat by Midtjylland in the Europa League, went off with a suspected hamstring injury.

Love grimaced on the bench as he received treatment and was replaced by Sadiq El-Fitouri during the game against Middlesbrough.

The Old Trafford club already had 13 first-team players out, prompting manager Louis van Gaal to call upon some of his younger players, including breakout sensation Marcus Rashford.

Fellow defender Joe Riley was substituted at half-time as Louis van Gaal only wanted him to play 45 minutes as he is expected to be in the first-team squad for Wednesday's home game against Watford in the Premier League.

Adnan Januzaj lasted 15 minutes longer before he was substituted in another pre-planned move.

A second-half penalty by Brazilian midfielder Andreas Pereira and a Nathan McGinley own goal secured a 2-1 victory for United's Under 21s at Hartlepool United's Victoria Park.

Van Gaal expects duo to return

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has revealed Anthony Martial and Matteo Darmian are ready to return to action in Wednesday's Barclays Premier League clash with Watford.

French striker Martial felt his hamstring in the warm-up to the Europa League second-leg clash with Midtjylland and has seen Marcus Rashford deputise in remarkable fashion, with four goals in his first two appearances. Darmian will also face competition for a right-back place with Guillermo Varela one of the stand-out performers in the victory over Arsenal, although either could also operate on the opposite flank.

A late decision will be made on the availability of Chris Smalling, who has been out since picking up an injury during a collision with the advertising hoardings during the Emirates FA Cup tie with Shrewsbury Town.

"Players are coming back in March, I think," the boss told MUTV. "We need players who are coming back because our programme is very full.

"Martial can play and also Darmian can play. Maybe Chris Smalling can play. We have to wait and see for tomorrow."

Michael Carrick has been filling in at centre-back alongside Daley Blind in the absence of Smalling while left-back Marcos Rojo hobbled off at the weekend.

"We have to build players up," van Gaal added. "You have seen how I did it with Marcos Rojo - 20 minutes and, the second time, 60 minutes, though he did not reach that. So it's not so easy. Playing in the second team is also a possibility.

"It was a kick [for Rojo]. A lot of players receive kicks and they can play the next match."

United are looking to record a fourth successive victory in all competitions after a timely return to form, with the 3-2 win over the Gunners thrilling the Old Trafford crowd on Sunday, and the overall picture on the injury front is looking more positive too.

"[Marouane] Fellaini and [Antonio] Valencia are the first ones to come back, I think," added van Gaal at his pre-match press conference. "Except, of course, Martial and Smalling and Darmian - they are coming back, maybe already tomorrow. It depends how they feel tomorrow, but the chance is there that one of these three players already plays.

"Fellaini shall come into the last step of the process of team training, and also Valencia today has trained with the group, so they are coming back. Wayne Rooney is still in a brace."

Trio on the way back for United

Phil Jones, Antonio Valencia and Marouane Fellaini are on the way back for Manchester United but Louis van Gaal may opt to select them in the Under-21 side rather than Sunday's Barclays Premier League clash at West Brom.


The boss will assess his options for the trip to The Hawthorns but could have the trio available with Valencia and Jones offering defensive reinforcements while Fellaini scored his first goal for the club at the Baggies' home ground last season.


In an exclusive interview with MUTV, van Gaal said: "Players are coming back but then, normally, they cannot play a match because the rhythm of the game is much higher. So, we have to train more and let them play in the second team. Maybe because I’m forced because of the circumstances to take a risk, like I have done with Marcos Rojo but, when I’m not forced to, then I shall not do that.


"A lot [of players] can do that [make Sunday’s squad] but it’s also what I have already told - I don’t want to take a risk. Valencia is coming back, Fellaini is coming back, Jones is coming back. A lot of players are coming back, and I have said that in former press conferences."


The Under-21s' next outing is a behind-closed-doors clash with Oldham Athletic in the Manchester Senior Cup on Monday.


Meanwhile, Ashley Young and Bastian Schweinsteiger could also return this month and Will Keane is on the mend after undergoing a groin operation earlier this week.


"Will had a fantastic operation, like Ashley Young," said the manager. "It was more or less the same operation. He is coming back on Tuesday and I'm hoping he comes back as quickly as Ashley because he's also coming back in March. Schweinsteiger may train with the first team next week."
