Default Re: David Beckham

David Beckham was out of breath and limping, but the England midfielder remains Los Angeles Galaxy's brightest star

David Beckham sat on a bench in the LA Galaxy locker room at Qwest Field stadium here on Sunday night looking uncomfortable with the scenes unfolding around him.

The Galaxy’s all-white strip was discarded on the floor, trampled on by reporters and camera crews trying to grab a word with Major League Soccer’s highest-paid star.

The 34-year-old midfielder has been largely shielded from the American practice of allowing the media to enter the dressing room to speak with players after the match and looked ill at ease.

Breathless: Beckham shows the strain during LA Galaxy's MLS Cup final defeat

Not that I blame him: it feels extremely odd to walk into what in Britain is considered a sanctuary and ask for post-match analysis while surreptitiously trying to avoid looking at anything you shouldn’t.

Beckham was wearing the navy pinstriped trousers of his cup final suit, a gift to the team from fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger, and winced as he pulled a brown sock over his tender right ankle. His pristine white shirt was still on the peg, his tattoos exposed.

He stood up, turned his back to the media and coughed violently, the asthma that caused him to draw heavily on an inhaler after the game having taken its toll. He looked much slimmer than the powerful athlete of old.

Beckham had three injections in his right ankle to play in the MLS Cup Final against Real Salt Lake on Sunday night but the painkillers wore off after 50 minutes of the two-hour match, which the Galaxy lost 5-4 on penalties after extra-time after the score had been level at 1-1 at 90 minutes.

He said: ‘It got worse and worse during the game but that’s what happens when you get an injury like that. It’s part of it.

Athletes who have overcome asthma

‘It’s the end of the (MLS) season now. I’ll have rehabilitation and just give it a little bit of rest because it’s been like this for a few rampant weeks. Bone bruising is one of those injuries that doesn’t really go away until you just rest it and take some time off, so I’m just going to have to do that over the next few weeks.’

In the last 15 minutes, Beckham was limping but he stayed on the pitch because the Galaxy had used all three of their substitutes.

He still volunteered to take — and convert — his side’s first penalty, but hobbled back to the centre circle and then ventured into Salt Lake’s dressing room to congratulate
the new league champions.

Salt Lake captain Kyle Beckerman said: ‘He’s a class act, he really is. I wouldn’t expect that from anybody and for him to come in here and congratulate us — he’s just a class act, top drawer. He’s done a lot for our league. And I know it wasn’t easy for him to lose this game. He wanted it just as much as everybody else. He came and congratulated us, and that was big time.’

There may be other chances for Beckham to become the second Englishman to win championships in three different countries (Trevor Steven did so in England, Scotland and France). But now his attention turns to AC Milan and England.

Moving on: Beckham must quickly get over his American failure with a loan move to Serie A giants AC Milan on the cards for December until the end of the season

Beckham is set to rejoin the Italian club on December 28, knowing he must impress again in Serie A to have a chance of making Fabio Capello’s World Cup squad.

‘Hopefully my ankle will be all right for then,’ he said.

Can he play at altitude?

In the intervening weeks, Beckham will spend America’s Thanksgiving holiday with his
family and then travel 10,000 miles to South Africa, where he will be an ambassador for England’s 2018 World Cup bid at the draw for next year’s tournament in Cape Town on December 4.

It’s not immediately obvious when his much-needed rest is going to happen, but Beckham was not in the mood to countenance the thought of failure in Milan.

He said: ‘It was a challenge the last time I went there. People said that I’d maybe play only one or two games and I ended up playing every one apart from one.

‘I’m going to go there, I’m going to work hard with the team and, hopefully, I can play some part.

‘Whether people still want to question my commitment, nothing like that’s going to make me lose any sleep, so if people still want to do it, then let them do it. I’ve gone past that.’

After Milan and ‘hopefully’ a fourth World Cup for England, Beckham has insisted he will return to the Galaxy to see out the remaining 18 months of his £20million, five-year contract.

If Sunday night was about proving his commitment to the American side, he certainly
succeeded. Even on one leg, Beckham was the best player on the pitch. He was wasted on the right wing but pinged the ball around with typical elegance and accuracy, even if the player to whom it was directed wasn’t always on the same wavelength.

An 81st-minute free kick to the hapless Edson Buddle was a prime example.

Beckham anticipated Buddle’s run to the far post and took a quick free kick that the striker failed to control.

Class act: Real Salt Lake skipper Kyle Beckerman (R) paid tribute to Beckham

Landon Donovan, the USA striker who criticised Beckham so vehemently six months ago, was similarly disappointing, particularly for a player voted the MLS’s most valuable of 2009.

The 27-year-old did provide an exquisite cross for Mike Magee to put the Galaxy 1-0 up after 41 minutes, but his play lacked discipline and his penalty was just awful — chipped over the bar into Row Z.

Galaxy’s defending for Real Salt Lake’s equaliser — a 64th-minute strike from Robbie Findley after Yura Movsisyan’s shot had been blocked by Donovan Ricketts — was equally poor, but nothing should be taken away from Salt Lake’s achievement. They sneaked into the play-offs in eighth place and walked away with the big prize.
What Beckham will do next

But I expected more. The artificial pitch didn’t help as the ball skidded and skipped off the surface but, in the city which boasts the original Starbucks — and 490 of the brand’s coffee shops, we were served a cold, decaffeinated, skinny latte instead of the feisty espresso we so desired.

The pre-match entertainment in nearby Occidental Park and the four-block ‘March to the Match’ had successfully drummed up excitement among the 46,011 fans — mostly 30-something men, teenage girls and families with children sporting Seattle Sounders colours — and I was beginning to think I might quite like American soccer.

It was slightly bewildering to see such a neutral crowd at a nation’s cup final but, as twinkling pieces of metallic paper cascaded down from the roof during the national anthem, I started to think a star-spangled pitch wasn’t such a bad idea after all.

But, unfortunately, when the red carpet was removed and the razzle-dazzle died down, there was little of substance underneath.

Beckham was running on empty but still managed to run the show.

You just wonder how long he can keep putting his body on the line.

Setiap Hari, Victoria Beckham Wajib Dandan 2,5 Jam!
Eny Kartikawati - detikhot

"Victoria merasa bibirnya hilang jika ia tersenyum," begitu kata sumber.

Hall of Fame: David Beckham
-footballtransfertavern.co-

David Beckham has shown the world something it didn’t know before – slow wingers can succeed at the very top level. Well, as long as they have something more to offer. Beckham’s name is now one of the, if not THE, most famous names in football and he’s even known outside of football for successful advertising careers and his personal life – though that’s not quite why he deserves a place in the Hall of Fame. Beckham has played for massive clubs like Manchester United, Real Madrid and AC Milan and introduced himself to the world with one of the best goals a youngster has ever scored in world football. And then followed a career full of success which made a name for the Leytonstone boy lad. Take a bow son…

Early Life:

Beckham was born in Leytonstone, London, on the 2nd of May 1975. He played football in the park as a child and always dreamed of becoming a professional footballer, having a real passion for the sport and for Manchester United which he had picked up from his parents who were fanatical about the club. He attended one of Bobby Charlton’s football schools in Manchester and was even a mascot at Old Trafford. After playing for a youth team his father coached Beckham moved to Brimsdown Rovers youth team and, after trials with several clubs, he moved to Tottenham’s school of excellence. Manchester United saw his potential though and moved quickly to sign Beckham on schoolboy terms as a fourteen year old in 1989. He officially joined their youth team in 1991 though.

Manchester United:

Beckham is still remembered fondly as one of “Fergie’s Fledglings” – a bunch of young players who came through the ranks at Man United at the same time which also included Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt and the Neville Brothers. “You’ll never win anything with kids” declared Alan Hansen but Alex Ferguson’s youngsters would go on to prove him wrong. Beckham was part of United’s FA Youth Cup winning side of 1992 and made his first team debut later that year in a League Cup clash with Brighton. Beckham helped United’s reserves win their league in 1994 before moving to Preston on loan to get some first team experience where he impressed (even scoring directly from a corner) before returning to United to finally take his place in the Man U first team. Beckham scored in the first game of the 1995/6 season against Aston Villa and quickly established himself as first choice right midfielder – playing deeper due to his lack of pace but still having a tremendous eye for a cross, set piece or finish – his accuracy was amazing. He was also a hell of a free kick taker. Fergie’s Fledglings flew to a double of the FA Cup and league title to make names of themselves. The following season Beckham, now wearing the number 10 shirt formerly worn by Mark Hughes, scored from near the halfway line against Wimbledon on the opening day, making sure everyone would know him. It was the beginning of the best of Beckham.

Beckham was voted PFA Young Player of the Year following another successful season where United won the league once more. In the summer of 1997 Eric Cantona retired and Beckham quickly took on his Number 7 shirt which he went on to make even more famous. Beckham continued as a first choice regular at Old Trafford, contributing goals and assists aplenty. A few more years of great success at the club followed and Beckham was a massive fan favourite at the club. Things deteriorated though as Beckham fell out with Alex Ferguson over his wife Victoria (formerly a member of the Spice Girls) and their relationship would get worse over the following years. Beckham then did well to get over a bad metatarsal injury and managed his best goals tally for the club in 2001/02 when he notched 16 goals in 42 games. The next season things got worse though as Ferguson regularly dropped him in favour of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and even famously kicked a boot at Beckham in the aftermath of an FA Cup defeat against Arsenal. No player is bigger than the club and Beckham’s departure was imminent. He left the club in 2003 having won six Premiership titles, two FA Cups, a Champion’s League and an Intercontinental Cup and having scored 61 goals in 265 appearances in the league for United over 8 years. The fans were horrified to see him go.

Real Madrid:

Beckham snubbed interest from Barcelona to join the Catalans arch-rivals Real Madrid for £25 million in the summer of 2003. Real Madrid had a poor season in 2003/04 but Beckham impressed and quickly became a fans favourite for the club. The club again failed to win anything the next season but Beckham continued to impress. However, under next manager Fabio Capello Beckham lost favour and found himself having to earn a place in the squad – this he did remarkably well, proving Capello wrong to have dropped him and eventually proving an important asset for Real as they won the league for the first time in a few years. Beckham had already agreed a move to America to play for LA Galaxy back in January but Real were keen to keep him and tried to change the player’s mind. Beckham couldn’t be swayed though and moved to the MLS, eager to make football a bigger sport in the U.S.

LA Galaxy:

Unsurprisingly the massive name signing of Beckham drew a lot of attention at Galaxy and he was immediately taken into the hearts of the club’s fans while opposition fans also flocked to see him in action. Despite injury problems Beckham did well for the club. However, the timings of the seasons in America led to Beckham worrying that he would lose his spot in the England squad as he was desperate to reach 100 international appearances and also to remain a part of the England team as long as he physically could. He trained with Arsenal before agreeing a loan spell with AC Milan to help keep him fit. This didn’t go down well with Galaxy fans though who started to doubt Beckham’s commitment to the team as he missed part of their season to play for Milan and his return saw him vilified and even get into altercations with fans. Recently another loan spell at Milan was agreed as Beckham clearly is not happy at Galaxy any more.

AC Milan:

Beckham joined Milan on loan in January 2009 and quickly established himself as an important player in Carlo Ancelotti’s ageing team, scoring and assisting on a number of occasions and generally impressing to the point where Milan wanted to sign him permanently. A deal couldn’t be agreed with Galaxy though and Beckham returned to America as mentioned. He feels more at home in Italy though and was eager to secure a return to Milan which has now been arranged for January.

International Career:

Beckham made his international debut in 1996 and a long, successful international career has followed with major ups and downs. The ups would undoubtedly be his crucial goals for England – his dramatic last minute free kick goal in a 2001 World Cup play-off put England into the upcoming World Cup and made him a national hero whilst he’s also managed to score several other important goals including being involved in England’s winning goal in the World Cup 2006 clash with Paraguay. His international career has had its bad moments though; he was controversially sent off against Argentina during the 1998 World Cup and was vilified as a villain in England afterwards as the decision contributed to England being eliminated from the tournament. He was also a casualty when Steve McLaren became England boss and decided to show his authority by removing the veteran Beckham from his side – McLaren later had to back down and call up Beckham once more though as England struggled under McLaren’s leadership. He’s also missed important penalties against France and Portugal in big competitions. Beckham reached a century of international caps in March 2008. He has made 115 appearances for his country, scoring 17 times.

Beckham is, in one word, a superstar – his name is synonymous with football; he’s known worldwide as not just a footballer but a style icon and one of the most famous men on the planet. His career has been extremely successful and he’s been highly impressive at three of the world’s biggest clubs and even now, in his later years, he continues to impress and could yet make the World cup in South Africa this summer – he’ll want to – Beckham’s a driven individual who has the lifelong abilities of accuracy and being a world class free kick taker. A lack of pace has never hindered Beckham’s progression and he will always be considered one of the best footballers of all times. A legend of both international and club scenes – children everywhere would love to be the next Beckham – the man’s a star in every sense of the word.

Kangen Old Trafford, Beckham Ingin Lawan MU

LOS ANGELES, KOMPAS.com - Gelandang pinjaman AC Milan, David Beckham, berharap bisa bertemu bekas klubnya Manchester United di babak 16 besar Liga Champions. Ia ingin bermain lagi di atas rumput Stadion Old Trafford.

Beckham: Bring on United
-fourfourtwo.com-

MILAN - AC Milan's David Beckham wants to play former club Manchester United when the draw for February's Champions League last 16 is made on Friday.

The 34-year-old, who joins Milan in January for a second loan spell from the Los Angeles Galaxy to try to secure his England World Cup place, left United in 2003 having won the 1999 European Cup with his boyhood club.

"I would really like it if we draw my old club. Since I left in 2003 I have not gone back to play at Old Trafford (as a club player)," he told Wednesday's Gazzetta dello Sport from Los Angeles.

"Seven years have gone by and I want it to happen. Me against United, great no? It would be very difficult but also very exciting."

Beckham, who acknowledged he might not walk straight into the side at the second-placed Serie A club, also said he wanted England to meet Italy in the World Cup final next July.

Asked if England were among the favourites for South Africa, he said: "Yes, we can say it without any problems. England are a very ambitious team, however they are not the only ones."

David Beckham Can Expect 'Hero's Welcome' When AC Milan Play Manchester United - Teddy Sheringham
-goal.com-

Former striker backs fans to give Becks a positive reaction at Old Trafford…

Manchester United have been drawn against AC Milan in the knock-out phase of the Champions League, meaning that David Beckham is set to face his former club.

Teddy Sheringham, the man whose late goal helped clinch the trophy for United back in 1999, believes that the midfielder will receive a warm welcome from the United fans.

"Without a doubt, he was a top player, an icon, the supporters will love him coming back to say his goodbyes and see him on the pitch," Sheringham told The Daily Mirror.

Beckham is set to link up with the Rossoneri again after Christmas, in a second loan spell from parent club LA Galaxy.

Sheringham feels that the prospect of a return to Old Trafford will provide the midfielder with extra motivation.

"He'll be getting fit for that tie," he added.

"He will want to play in that and go back to Manchester United, take all the adulation – and turn Manchester United over as well!"
