Jones is United's August star

Manchester United fans around the world have voted Phil Jones their Player of the Month for August, highlighting his consistent start to the season.

While results on the pitch weren’t ideal, the 22-year-old caught the eye while playing every minute of three Barclays Premier League matches to earn 46 per cent of votes cast on ManUtd.com and its six foreign language sites, placing him ahead of fellow nominees Tyler Blackett and Wayne Rooney.

After receiving his trophy at the Aon Training Complex, Jones offered a frank assessment of his and United’s campaign so far. “I think I have had a steady start to the season,” he explained. “Obviously the results have not been what we wanted, far from it, so we need to improve and hopefully win on Sunday to get our first win on the board and really kick on from there.”

Jones also reserved words of praise for Blackett, who has made a fine start to his senior career:*"He has got a big future if he keeps playing the way he is playing and progressing under the manager."

Rooney wins Goal of the Month accolade

Wayne Rooney's acrobatic effort against Swansea City has been voted Manchester United's Goal of the Month for August by the fans.

The Reds captain's strike may have ultimately proved in vain as the Welsh side ran out 2-1 victors on the opening day but it was rated the best goal from our shortlist of six.

James Wilson*was runner-up for his remarkable solo run and*shot against neighbours City in the Manchester Senior Cup final, with the team effort in the tour victory over Real Madrid, finished off by Ashley Young, in third place.

Ander Herrera*| Appearances: 3, Goals: 2, Assists: 1
The Basque playmaker is verging on old hat now in comparison to more recent arrivals Di Maria, Falcao and Daley Blind, but that is simply testament to how well he has settled into United's midfield. As long as he remains fit, taking that central spot off him will be a tall order. Ander recently revealed his admiration for Paul Scholes, and the legendary midfield master would be proud of Herrera's bite in the tackle and penchant for getting forward to score goals. He is proving that he was well worth the wait to sign him.

Rafael |*Appearances: 3, Assists: 1, Clean sheets: 1
The Brazilian is something of an adopted Mancunian after six years in the first team, and his let-me-at-'em style and attacking intent are great to watch. His first game since March, against QPR, showed that his urgency is a boon down the right in a diamond formation that encourages him to bomb forward. On the wrong end of a frustrating penalty call at Leicester, he didn't dwell on it and gave another strong showing against West Ham, creating Wayne Rooney's goal and claiming the Man of the Match award.

The Argentinian is not lacking in star quality and after a subtly impressive debut against Burnley in August, he really began to shine in September. His home debut in the 4-0 win over QPR offered up his first strike for the club, a part in all four goals and a landslide victory in our Man of the Match poll. At Leicester City he conjured a moment of pure magic for a brilliantly inventive lobbed goal – which may make our Goal of the Month competition something of a formality. More than that, he's just a joy to watch: wiry and wily, creative and cunning.
