UNITED UNDER-21S AIM TO GO TOP OF THE TABLE

Manchester United will go top of the Barclays Under-21 Premier League table with a win or draw in Thursday night's derby against Manchester City at Leigh Sports Village. Kick-off is at 20:00 GMT.

MUTV will, of course, be screening the match live, while entry for all spectators is free, as the Reds look to follow up Monday's remarkable 7-0 thumping of Norwich City at Old Trafford with another three points to aid the defence of the title.

Warren Joyce is set to welcome several regulars back into his side after first-teamers such as Phil Jones and Memphis Depay started against the Canaries. Adnan Januzaj and Guillermo Varela were both withdrawn due to injury during the first half and will be checked out, although they could also be in contention for the senior squad's trip to Sunderland on Saturday.

"I don’t really know about the injuries," Joyce told MUTV on Monday night. "We’ll have to assess them. Varela’s was just a kick on the ankle so it shouldn’t be too bad and Adnan over stretched so it was just a precaution really. Hopefully, they’ll be fine.

"We are quite thin on the ground with three teams – the first team, the Under-21s and the Under-18s - all playing three games in 48 hours. A lot of the players are involved at each level, like Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, Marcus Rashford, Axel Tuanzebe and Ro-Shaun Williams, so it will be a difficult few days trying to get the players that everybody needs but we know that the players we have will all give 100 per cent and put on a performance."

United are striving to take another big step in the pursuit of more silverware with the team currently on a run of seven wins in eight games with the exception being a 2-0 reverse to Everton behind closed doors.

"The lads have done really really well," added Joyce. "The Everton game was a disaster from start to finish, we were due to play at Southport but, due to a waterlogged pitch, it was moved to Finch Farm at the last minute, which isn’t great preparation for any players on a matchday.

"These players are close to first-team football and we are pushing them into a situation that is not correct, to do that in such circumstances is not helpful for anybody. It was a bad night all round - the environment and the result.

"It was one of the worst I have been involved in at any level, extremely frustrating and something we have spoken about as a group because there are very few positives from an experience like that.

"That’s not just because we didn’t get a good result and lost the game, it’s not one of those games that the Premier League should advocate as the next progression towards first-team football. But, barring the Everton result, we have had some great results recently and we hope that continues against Manchester City."

The Blues are seven points behind the Reds having played the same amount of games and the two Manchester clubs will do battle again on Saturday 20 February at 13:00 GMT. That away clash for United, which will also be live on MUTV, has been moved from the Etihad Stadium to City's Academy Stadium.

UNDER-21S: UNITED 1 MANCHESTER CITY 0

Barclays Under-21 Premier League | 11 February 2016 | Leigh Sports Village | Scorer: Rothwell 16

Manchester United moved to the top of the Barclays Under-21 Premier League table with a 1-0 victory over neighbours City at Leigh Sports Village.

Joe Rothwell scored the only goal on his first start of the season and Warren Joyce will be pleased with the effort his players put into preserving the slender advantage as the Blues rarely looked capable of conjuring up an equaliser.

Will Keane, fresh from five goals in his last outing on Monday against Norwich City, showed his pace when looking to exploit an early error at the back but Angus Gunn was out well to save. The striker then had a shot deflected behind for a corner following a neat turn.

The Reds continued to carry the greater threat and were rewarded with the opening goal. Tim Fosu-Mensah, playing at right-back, launched an enticing through ball into the path of Keane and he sensibly held off Kean Bryan and waited for support from Rothwell, with the midfielder guiding a measured shot into the net.

City managed a couple of efforts from set-pieces - Tosin Adarabioyo forcing a fine save by Joel Pereira and Bryan nodding off target - while full Reds debutant Regan Poole made a determined block to smother an Aleix Garcia drive. However, the home side looked pretty much in control and Josh Harrop had a free-kick pushed out by Gunn and bent an attempt the wrong side of the far post either side of the interval.

Harrop's departure due to injury on 69 minutes allowed Sadiq El Fitouri the chance to feature against his former employers while Marcus Rashford was also introduced to add his speed on the left. Chances were at a premium as the game wore on with United working flat out to deny the Blues any space.

Keane managed to get a sight of goal following a flowing move, which culminated in Fosu-Mensah picking out the centre-forward, but the shot, although containing plenty of punch, flew wide. The excellent Ro-Shaun Williams also blazed an ambitious effort over the bar late on after breaking forward. City finally mustered a couple of chances in injury time but Poole made another wonderful block and Pereira kept out Aleix Garcia as it stayed 1-0.

So it is eight wins out of eight home games for Joyce's side, who are at the summit with a game in hand on second-placed Sunderland.

United: J.Pereira; Fosu-Mensah, Williams, Love, Riley; Poole, Redmond, Rothwell (Rashford 71); Harrop (El Fitouri 69), Keane, Weir. Subs not used: Henderson, McTominay, Mitchell.

VIDEO : ROTHWELL'S DERBY WINNER FOR UNITED U21S

One strike was enough to settle the Under-21 derby in United's favour on Thursday night when Joe Rothwell breached Manchester City's defence with an early breakaway goal.

Our video shows how the Reds built from the back to take the lead at Leigh Sports Village, with Will Keane - the man who scored five in Monday's 7-0 win over Norwich City - turning goal provider to place the final pass perfectly into Rothwell's path.

The Reds' no.7 did the rest to make the score 1-0, while a resolute performance by Warren Joyce's defence kept it that way to ensure United moved above Sunderland at the top of the Barclays Under-21 Premier League.

Nanti dinihari lawan Reading

Under-21s entertain Reading at Leigh

Manchester United's Under-21s continue the title push with a game against Reading at Leigh Sports Village on Monday night, knowing victory will extend the lead at the top to four points over Sunderland.

The 19:00 GMT kick-off is live onMUTV as the Reds strive for a ninth successive home win on the back of victories over Norwich City and Manchester City last week.

Joe Rothwell was the goalscoring hero in the derby as he marked his first start of the Under-21 season with a key contribution.

"It's always a nice feeling to score, especially against your local rivals," he told MUTV. "After having quite a bit of a lay-off, it's nice to come back and score the winner.

"I had to have an operation to have my tonsils taken out and I lost quite a bit of weight, which set me back. I had to train really hard every day to build myself back up and, thankfully, it's paid off. I always try to keep thinking positively and it got me through it.

"The plan is to try to play as many minutes as I can and keep building myself back up and keep scoring goals. Winning the league was always the main plan for us and we'll take some catching. I think we'll do it."

Coach Warren Joyce was delighted with the overall display and the contribution of Rothwell and full debutant Regan Poole, who played in midfield and made a couple of timely blocks inside his own box.

"Regan and Joe haven't played for four or five months," said Joyce. "Pooley didn't have his clearance come through and Joe is coming back from his illness and operation. He's had to work really hard to get his fitness back so it's a pleasing night for some of them.

"It was a good night [against Manchester City]. You get different lessons in every game you play. We equipped ourselves really well and Regan's block in the last minute typified the night, I thought. It was pleasing, given how unbalanced the team was, that we could adapt and give a good account of ourselves."

Reading are having a decent season and sit fourth in the division, 10 points off United having played two games more, while United won the corresponding fixture 3-1 at Wycombe Wanderers' Adams Park.

Default Re: Man United U-21 Matches 2015/16

Jelang pertandingan bentar lagi, simak dulu kondisi kedua tim akhir-akhir ini beserta statistik musim ini.

The Academy has seen a few changes in the past week with U18 coach Paul McGuinness leaving the club, which could see Warren Joyce move down to U18 level, but this has not yet been confirmed. Joyce has brought players to their best, which is why so many have been perceived as good enough to play for the first team, with Paddy McNair, Jesse Lingard, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson and Andreas Pereira have been regularly involved in the first team also with James Weir, Marcus Rashford and Donald Love being involved in recent team, with only Love getting on the pitch.

The U21’s earned the top spot in the league in the last week, now sitting two points ahead of Sunderland, who have led the league throughout the season. Sunderland also play on Monday; facing Middlesbrough, which will mean United will still have a game in hand, meaning they could extend their lead to five points, should they of course win their matches. If Sunderland drop points, United lead could be much more. Reading have played United already this season, losing 3-1 just over a month ago. They were also beat 3-1 by City in their next match.

Currently lying in fourth place, Reading remain a side in good form, although not recently, but I feel United have what they need to ensure a victory, which will keep the pressure on Sunderland. It looks as though United could retain their Barclays U21 Premier League crown, but there are nine matches remaining this season, which could see Sunderland return to the top of the league. In a few weeks time, perhaps United will be in a much better position, which could tell whether they are likely to win the league this season.

UNDER-21S: UNITED 1 READING 0

Barclays Under-21 Premier League | 15 February 2016 | Leigh Sports Village | Scorer: Long og 57

Manchester United maintained a 100 per cent home record in the Barclays Under-21 Premier League with a 1-0 victory over Reading.

Warren Joyce's side were forced to fight all the way for the three points but remain ahead of Sunderland at the summit thanks to an own goal by Sean Long, after James Weir's second-half shot came back off the woodwork.

The Royals made the better start and were a little unlucky not to be ahead at the interval. Jack Stacey and George Evans were off target, while Andrew Novakovich seemed certain to score when his shot rolled past Joel Pereira but bounced back off a post and into the grateful arms of the grounded keeper.

That opportunity came from a rare slip by Ro-Shaun Williams, whose stray pass led to Stacey picking out Novakovich and the striker had another effort moments later when heading an Aaron Kuhl cross goalwards but Pereira plucked it out of the air. Pereira also kept out a swerving drive by Evans from outside the box.

United also mustered attempts with Marcus Rashford failing to find his range, although Niall Keown blocked one of his shots, and Matty Willock charged through with a run of real quality to force a sprawling stop out of Stuart Moore in the 26th minute. The best first-half opening for the Reds fell to Joe Riley but the wing-back flashed a glorious chance over the bar after good work by Weir and Rashford.

It was end-to-end stuff after the restart with plenty of entertainment for the fans at Leigh Sports Village. Leading scorer Rowan Liburd spurned an opportunity for Reading before Willock conjured up a stunning volley that forced a fine save out of Moore.

With both sides attacking with intent, United charged down the left when Rashford invited the overlapping Riley forward. Weir pounced on the cross and, when the ball came back off an upright, it cannoned into the net off Long. The luckless Long made amends by charging down Rashford soon afterwards following a decent run by Joe Rothwell.

A beautiful move then led to Weir placing a left-footed shot wide while Riley found the angle too tight after being released by Rothwell. Reading remained in the game but Pereira stayed alert, confidently claiming a number of catches, and the three-man defence soundly did their jobs.

So a second successive 1-0 triumph was secured, the sort of success that wins titles, although second-placed Sunderland were also victorious in a rearranged game with Middlesbrough.

United U21 vs Reading : J.Pereira; Fosu-Mensah, Williams, Poole; El Fitouri (Warren 88), Weir, Willock, Redmond, Riley; Rothwell; Rashford (McTominay 84). Subs not used: Henderson, Doughty, Mitchell.
