Hoops striker Johnson out for the season
ESPN - September 17, 2012

Queens Park Rangers striker Andrew Johnson has been ruled out for the "majority of the season" with an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Johnson, 31, picked up the knee problem during Saturday's 0-0 draw with Chelsea at Loftus Road and was forced off before half-time.

QPR manager Mark Hughes expressed his concern after the match and now a series of scans have revealed the full extent of the problem.

"Andy Johnson suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury against Chelsea and is likely to be sidelined for the majority of the season,'' QPR posted on their official Twitter account.

Defender Fabio da Silva also suffered an injury but Hughes expects the on-loan Manchester United full-back to return from his hamstring problem in two weeks.

Kelly set to be out until 2013
ESPN - September 24, 2012

Liverpool defender Martin Kelly does not expect to play again this year after twisting his knee against Manchester United on Sunday.

Kelly had to leave the field late in the contest, which was won 2-1 by United. His absence contributed to Liverpool finishing the game with nine men after Jonjo Shelvey's earlier red card.

The Liverpool defender will have a scan to discover the full extent of the damage on Monday, and is remaining upbeat despite the fact he knows he has played his last game of the calendar year.

"Hoping for the best but fearing the worst, got my scan at eight, then will let you guys know," Kelly tweeted.

"What I can say is it's not the worst injury I've had, and for sure I'll be fighting for my place next year when I'm back fitter and stronger."

Injury worries for Liverpool

Liverpool are awaiting medical reports on Fabio Borini, Daniel Agger and Martin Kelly, who picked up injuries during Sunday’s 2-1 loss to Manchester United.

Borini came off at half time with an ankle injury, Agger picked up a knee injury late in the second half, while Kelly also hobbled off moments before the final whistle with a knee injury.

“Fabio had a badly swollen ankle and was struggling to put any sort of force on the floor, so we’ll assess that tomorrow (Monday) and see how he is,” coach Brendan Rodgers to the club’s website. “It looked badly bruised at half-time.

“Daniel Agger we’ll need to wait and see. It didn’t look so good with his knee, and some of the medics were saying he may have a problem with his medial ligament, but we’ll to assess that over the next 24 hours and look at it again tomorrow (Monday).”

All three players have been regulars under Brendan Rodgers and their absence will be a blow for the side that is trying to get back to winning ways.

John Terry not ready to return
Press Association - November 30, 2012

John Terry could travel to the Club World Cup before making his Chelsea comeback, interim manager Rafael Benitez said Friday.

Benitez said Terry was pushing himself to return from the knee injury that has sidelined him for almost three weeks.

"He's pushing -- 'I want to be there, I want to be involved' -- but still he will need some time," Benitez said. "It's a knee, not just a muscle. You have to see the reaction when you turn. You cannot put him in a position where he could get injured again."

But the Spaniard was not prepared to risk the defender in Saturday's Premier League game at West Ham or Wednesday's Champions League clash with Nordsjaelland.

Chelsea has one more match after that, next weekend's trip to Sunderland, before flying to Japan for its bid to be crowned world champions.

Asked if Terry could travel without having returned, Benitez said: "Yeah, it could be. It's a question of confidence. When you forget you have that problem in your knee is when you are ready."

Terry has seen just 130 minutes of first-team football since the beginning of October because of a combination of his racism ban and injury.

Benitez has been impressed by the 31-year-old's mentality since his own appointment as Chelsea boss.

"Early this morning, he was in front of me walking on to the pitch and he didn't know I was following him," Benitez said. "Three young players were coming along and the way he approached them was quite positive."

Frank Lampard could also travel to the Club World Cup before returning from the calf problem that has ruled him out for more than a month.

Benitez said Chelsea had missed its captain and vice-captain, whose absence coincided with the alarming slump that saw Roberto Di Matteo sacked as manager.

"You have to analyze what has been happening in the last month, but you can see these players with this character and leadership can be helpful when things are wrong," Benitez said.

Fulham's Ruiz out for four more weeks
ESPN - December 6, 2012

Fulham will be without attacker Bryan Ruiz for at least four more weeks after he suffered a setback in his recovery from a hamstring injury.

The Cottagers had expected to welcome back Ruiz - who suffered the injury in the 3-1 home defeat to Sunderland last month - against Newcastle on Monday.

But they now say the 27-year-old will not return to action until January, with manager Martin Jol explaining: "He came back on Monday, then he had a setback and he will be out for at least four weeks.

Bryan Ruiz: Injury setback

"It is the same injury. He was in the final stage of his rehabilitation and he aggravated his hamstring muscle again. He has had intensive screening and that highlighted some problems."

Costa Rica international Ruiz will undergo further treatment, and Jol said: "He had this hamstring injury before, and now we've found out it is a structural thing.

"We had a second opinion and hopefully we have found a solution now, but he needs treatment and he will be out for the next four weeks.

"Hopefully he will be fine in four weeks, but of course it is a big disappointment."

Ruiz, who took time to settle in at Craven Cottage, had been a key player in Fulham's strong start to the season.

"Bryan was a vital player for us and every time he played, like against Arsenal, Southampton and Wigan, he was quite important, but we've got other players," Jol said. "Good luck to him, and he will be back after Christmas."

Romeu out for six months
ESPNSoccernet - December 11, 2012

Chelsea midfielder Oriol Romeu is expected to be out for six months after undergoing surgery on Monday, the club has announced.

Romeu suffered a knee injury in the first half of the Blues' 3-1 win over Sunderland on the weekend, and missed the team's trip to Japan for the FIFA Club World Cup this week.

Following anterior cruciate reconstruction surgery and medial meniscus repair, Chelsea staff determined the 21-year-old would not likely return until next May.

Chelsea midfielder Oriol Romeu has been a key figure under Rafael Benitez

Romeu has made 22 Premier League appearances since moving to Stamford Bridge from Barcelona in the summer of 2011.

George Saville, a 19-year-old midfielder who came up through the club's youth academy, has been added to the squad for the tournament in Japan.

Chelsea are also missing club captain John Terry through injury as they aim to win their first trophy and the control of interim manager Rafael Benitez.

The European champions' first match sees them face Mexican side Monterrey, the defending CONCACAF Champions League holders, in Yokohama on Thursday.

Newcastle United's Hatem Ben Arfa suffers fresh injury setback

Louise Taylor
guardian.co.uk

Alan Pardew talks of his Newcastle United side absorbing "blow after blow" and the latest hefty punch of an injury-hit season came their way on Thursday when it emerged that hamstring trouble will almost certainly rule Hatem Ben Arfa out of Saturday's home game with Manchester City.

After sitting out four matches with a hamstring strain Ben Arfa returned to Pardew's team for Monday night's 2-1 defeat at Fulham, scoring Newcastle's goal, but subsequent scans have caused concern. "It's an unusual situation," said Pardew. "Hatem isn't feeling any symptoms but the scan shows that his hamstring's not very well."

The loss of his most creative player is the last thing Newcastle's manager needs at a time when his 14th-placed side have won only one of their last nine games. "We look weak with the injuries we've sustained and we may need to bring in a player or two next month," said Pardew. "We're in the market, as I'm sure a few other clubs will be too. I think there'll be movement in this window."

For the moment, though, he is demanding more from his existing personnel. "We're a good side that's under-performing," he said. "There are reasons for that but we can't accept them."

At least he continues to be backed by Mike Ashley, Newcastle's owner. "I want to look Mike in the eye with great results under my belt but at the minute I can't. I'm looking at him in the eye and I've got tricky results," said Pardew.

"But he understands why. Mike has been very supportive and now we look to the window. He's put me under no pressure in this period, other than to say: 'Can I help you?' The only pressures are external pressures from our fans and the media."

Some supporters are questioning whether the recent signing of eight-year contracts has bred complacency among Pardew and his staff. "The fans are getting a little bit of a misconception about us because there have been suggestions that we're not working as hard as before, which is absolutely ridiculous," he said. "It's not about money, it's not about

Darren Bent ruled out of Aston Villa's Christmas programme with injury

Press Association
guardian.co.uk

The Aston Villa striker Darren Bent has been ruled out of the club's Christmas programme with a hamstring injury suffered during the midweek Capital One Cup game at Norwich, the club have confirmed.

Bent limped out of the quarter-final tie at Carrow Road after only half an hour – his first start for six weeks.

The England international underwent a scan on Wednesday and the Villa manager Paul Lambert is resigned to being without the club's record signing "for a few weeks". Lambert said: "He went for a scan on Wednesday and he has got a problem with his hamstring which will keep him out for a few weeks."

Asked if he was out of the Christmas matches, the Scot added: "Yes, probably, the way it is looking, yes. I think a few weeks. Maybe four weeks, I'd say, before we see him back."

It is another setback for Bent in a year to forget which saw him start as England's number one striker but lose his place in the first XI at Villa this season. An ankle injury ruled him out of the final three months of last season and Euro 2012.

Bent started the new campaign in the Villa lineup but a further ankle setback and the form of Christian Benteke meant he slipped down the pecking order. Meanwhile, the Villa captain Ron Vlaar is to undergo a scan on Friday on the calf problem which has sidelined the central defender for the past month.

Samir Nasri could miss festive period for Manchester City

Jamie Jackson
guardian.co.uk

Samir Nasri could miss the majority of the festive period for Manchester City following a groin injury suffered during Saturday's 3-1 win at Newcastle United.

The midfielder is a major doubt for the weekend visit of Reading with the club fearful he could be out for longer as Roberto Mancini attempts to close the six-point gap to the Premier League leaders Manchester United.

The Frenchman had been impressive for City in the first half against Newcastle before suffering the problem and being replaced after 37 minutes.

After Reading, City travel to Sunderland and Norwich City, before finishing the holiday fixtures with the visit of Stoke City on 1 January.
