It's been an impressive start to the 2017/18 season from Manchester United and along with some fantastic results, we witnessed some wonderful goals too.

The first three strikes for our Goal of the Month poll are all from the same first-team game - United's 4-0 win over West Ham. Romelu Lukaku’s debut Old Trafford goal for the Reds is the first on the list after he slammed in off the post in United’s Premier League opener.Anthony Martial and

Paul Pogba’s strikes are also included for your consideration, as the pacy forward brought a lightning fast counterattack to its conclusion with a calm finish, while the midfield maestro hammered home from distance in the 90th-minute to bring the curtain down on a superb Reds performance.

The next goal comes from Demi Mitchell, after the young left-back curled in a fine free-kick in the Under-23s’ 1-0 win at Leicester City in the Premier League 2.

Three more memorable first-team strikes are also included the poll following the 4-0 win over Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium.Lukaku is in there again

after he found himself in space to coolly slot past Lukasz Fabianski in the 80th-minute, before Pogba was played in just two minutes later to chip over the oncoming keeper. Martial is the penultimate name on the list after firing home with consummate ease following a fine break from his compatriot Pogba for United's fourth goal.

The final strike featured in this month’s poll comes from Nishan Burkart who headed home from Millen Baars' right-wing cross in the Under-18s’ 2-1 victory over Stoke City at The Cliff.

Vote: United's August Player of the Month

A number of Manchester United players could have been nominated for the club’s Player of the Month award after a great start to the season. But there can only be three and, after much thought, Phil Jones, Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba have emerged as our August candidates.

Now, your votes in our live Twitter poll will decide which of the triumvirate wins the trophy. Before you state your opinion via @ManUtd, we encourage you to assess each of the worthy contenders…

PHIL JONES


Summary of his month: The England international was suspended for the UEFA Super Cup defeat to Real Madrid, but started all three of the Premier League wins over West Ham United, Swansea City and Leicester City alongside Eric Bailly, keeping cleans sheets each time. He looks set to enjoy a superb campaign at centre-back now that his recent injury problems are seemingly behind him.


The standout moment: Let’s be honest, we were all a little worried about Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez scoring on his Old Trafford return, but all fears were extinguished by a commanding performance from Jones as he handled the Mexican ex-Red with impressive ease. Well played!


Key statistic: Jones finished the month of August with the highest passing accuracy rate of any United player who started in the Premier League, with a whopping 94 per cent (150 from 161).


Mourinho is happy: "He's potentially a very good player,” the boss said. “He's still young. He's still in a learning age but for years and years and years he was injury-prone. If we manage to have him safe and protected from injuries, I think potentially he's everything I like in a central defender.”

NEMANJA MATIC


Summary of his month: Our summer signing from Chelsea made an eye-catching debut against Real Madrid in Macedonia, hitting the shot that led to Romelu Lukaku’s goal. He was voted Man of the Match following his Old Trafford bow against the Hammers and two more solid displays followed, against the Swans and Foxes, adding further evidence to the belief that he is a certified hit.


The standout moment: Nemanja’s job in central midfield is fairly simple: win the ball back and release our attacking players at pace. He did just that against West Ham on the opening day of the league season, robbing Angelo Ogbonna of possession and moving the ball to Marcus Rashford, who then provided the pass from which Lukaku opened the scoring. It was all done in eight seconds, too.
Key statistic: Matic completed the most successful tackles of any Red in August, with 11 to his name.


The other Nemanja is impressed: “Matic a very good signing for us,” Vidic told us at the weekend. “He's a top player for the position and I'm surprised that Antonio Conte let him go. He played most of their games last season and did really well, so I didn't expect him to be sold to one of their biggest rivals. The way he's played in his first few games suggests he is a proper United player.”

PAUL POGBA


Summary of his month: The arrival of the defensively-minded Matic appears to have unleashed our confident France international, who scored his first goal of the season against West Ham and bagged another excellent finish at Swansea, where he also claimed an assist for compatriot Anthony Martial. In his second season after the return from Juventus, the stage is set for Paul to dominate 2017/18.


The standout moment: Pogba has previously described last season’s goal at Swansea as his best in a United shirt, but this month’s chipped effort at the Liberty Stadium was arguably just as good. It capped the end of a fearsome attack up the right wing, with a fine assist from Henrikh Mkhitaryan.


Key statistic: Pogba was involved in six of United's 11 goals, tallying four assists and two goals.


Matic has vowed to fight for him: “I think we play together very well,” our Serbian summer signing told us. “We help each other. He always plays next to me. We are there on the pitch to fight for each other. We will continue like this and I’m happy to have him in the team.”

PLAYER OF THE MONTH

Paul Pogba has claimed Manchester United's first Player of the Month award of 2017/18 after enjoying an impressive August.

More than 160,000 fans voted in our poll on Twitter and, after a close battle, Pogba came out on top as he narrowly beat team-mates Nemanja Matic and Phil Jones to take the accolade.

It was an unforgettable month for Pogba, who scored two goals, recorded one assist and was named Man of the Match twice as his influential displays helped the Reds claim maximum points from the first three league games to end the month top of the table.

The Frenchman scored in the 4-0 victories over West Ham United and Swansea City, set up Anthony Martial's effort against the Swans and his eye-catching performance at the Liberty Stadium earned him Man of the Match before he was also selected as our star player in the 2-0 win over Leicester at Old Trafford.

His brilliant effort against the Hammers on the opening weekend ensured he entered an exclusive goalscorers club, while his stunning clipped finish against Swansea also won the club's Goal of the Month prize for August too.

To top off a fine first month of the campaign, the 24-year-old scooped the Europa League's Player of the Season award for 2016/17 following his significant contribution to United's success in the competition last term.

Pogba also claimed the final Player of the Month prize of last season in May after ending last term in fine form, including a goal in the Europa League final success over Ajax in Stockholm. Congratulations Paul!

Vote: September's Player of the Month

It was a close-run thing, but we can confirm four nominees for September's Player-of-the Month award at Manchester United.

After a fabulous spell, it was too difficult to whittle the shortlist down to our usual three names so Marouane Fellaini, Romelu Lukaku, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford all make the cut. Phil Jones, Nemanja Matic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan also picked up votes.

Marouane Fellaini - Appearances/Goals: 3 (1) / 3
The big Belgian missed the only game where United have dropped points this term, at Stoke City, due to injury, but came off the bench to good effect by scoring in the Champions League opener with Basel. He performed well against his former club Everton and in the victory at Southampton, but his finest display of the month came last Saturday. He not only scored twice against Crystal Palace but also picked up our Man-of-the-Match award.


Romelu Lukaku - Appearances/Goals: 6 / 7
The Reds' leading marksman just cannot stop finding the net. He sat out the Carabao Cup triumph over Burton Albion but was on the scoresheet in all of the other matches. A first-half brace at CSKA Moscow followed a strike on his Champions League group-stage bow versus Basel and his confidence is sky high at the moment. It is remarkable to think, had Kasper Schmeichel not saved his penalty in the Leicester City clash, he would have scored in every single game so far this term.


Anthony Martial - Appearances/Goals: 3 (3) / 3
Currently in terrific form, the 21-year-old has been unplayable at times and he thrilled Old Trafford with his display against Burton. Even when coming off the bench, he has instantly produced the goods and came up with another assist in the win over Palace. He expertly converted penalties in the convincing victories against Everton and CSKA Moscow, playing a part in all four goals in the Russian capital, and has been leaving defenders trailing in his wake with a series of spellbinding dribbles.


Marcus Rashford - Appearances/Goals: 5 (2) / 4
The youngster has showed his class throughout September after being credited with a goal at Stoke when he deflected in Paul Pogba's header. He came off the bench to net on his Champions League bow, against Basel, and ran Burton ragged in the Carabao Cup, netting twice and setting up Martial's strike. The forward's defensive work drew praise at Southampton in a gritty 1-0 win and, of course, he claimed the assist for two of the goals in the victory over Palace.
