Unai Emery urges Manchester United to keep faith with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as he looks to put another dent in the under-fire boss' Champions League hopes with Villarreal

* Manchester United host Villarreal in the Champions League on Wednesday
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side suffered shock loss to Young Boys on matchday one
* They have lost three of their last four matches amid early season blip in form
* Solskjaer is under intense pressure to deliver success to Old Trafford this season
* But he found an ally in Villarreal boss Unai Emery, himself axed by Arsenal

Villarreal boss Unai Emery has urged Manchester United to show patience with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer despite the club's early-season blip.

Emery, who faces Solskjaer in the Champions League at Old Trafford on Wednesday night, knows just how ruthless the Premier League can be after he was sacked by Arsenal in 2019 following just 18 months in charge at the Emirates.

Solskjaer is under pressure at United after losing three of his last four games including the Group F opener to Young Boys in Switzerland.

Villarreal manager Unai Emery has given his support to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ahead of his team's meeting with Manchester United at Old Trafford on Wednesday night. United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is feeling intense pressure to deliver silverware this season

Although there is no indication whatsoever that his job is under threat, former teammates Rio Ferdinand, Paul Scholes and Teddy Sheringham are among those who have warned that the Norwegian must deliver a trophy this season.

Emery insists there is no reason for United to panic, saying: 'I've lived that when I was in Arsenal. Solskjaer is a former Manchester United player and a head coach who has a lot of support and respect.

'He was in the Champions League last year and reached the Europa League final. This year he has many challenges ahead and it is true that he has had some negative results, but it wouldn't be wise for the club to change the vision they have for the head coach.'

Emery masterminded Villarreal's shock win over United in the Europa League final just four months ago, winning 11-10 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in Gdansk, but he insists that Solskjaer's side will be favourites again on Wednesday.

United can't afford another loss after a shock defeat to Young Boys on matchday one

'If we see the squad one by one and take into account what Manchester United represents in history, they are the clear favourites,' added Emery.

'That team from the final also has Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo, so if they were very good then they have improved even more.

'I'm not afraid of Manchester United – we respect them and respect is important. If you lose respect the other team may take advantage of that.

Individually have very good players – attackers like Edinson Cavani, Anthony Martial and Ronaldo. These are three attackers who could play in any team.

Emery and Solskjaer greet one another during the Spaniard's time as Arsenal manager

'They lost against Young Boys. It was the favourite versus the less favourite, but there was a surprise.

'Tomorrow's Manchester United will be the best Manchester United, they have to prove their power.'

'The subs brought so much energy to the game': Ole Gunnar Solskjaer praised for sending on Jesse Lingard and Edinson Cavani by former Manchester United stars as they help seal dramatic late win over Villarreal

* Manchester United recovered from 1-0 down to secure a late 2-1 victory
* Cristiano Ronaldo scored a stoppage-time winner after Alex Telles equaliser
* Jesse Lingard came off the bench to provide crucial assist for Ronaldo
* Edinson Cavani also impressed in a cameo during the Champions League tie

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been lauded for his late changes which helped Manchester United earn their first Champions League win of the season after last-minute drama at Old Trafford.

United had fell behind at home to Villarreal in the 53rd minute following a Paco Alcacer strike, before Alex Telles equalised with an excellent volley on the hour mark.

But with 15 minutes left, Solskjaer had still failed to call to his bench while his opposite number Unai Emery had already made all five of his substitutions.

The midfielder lays the ball off for Cristiano Ronaldo (out of picture) whose resulting shot helped United defeat Villarreal in stoppage time in the Champions League encounter

The Red Devils found another gear though when Edinson Cavani and Nemanja Matic were introduced, while Jesse Lingard proved crucial when he was brought on a minute before regulation time was up along with Fred.

Lingard combined well with Cristiano Ronaldo following a Cavani cross in the fifth and final minute of stoppage time due to be played, teeing up United's talisman to score a dramatic winning goal at Old Trafford and secure all three points.

Former United midfielder and Champions League winner Owen Hargreaves praised Solskjaer's substitutions, saying they provided the energy to see the Red Devils over the line following a tough encounter with the spirited Spanish side.

'When you have players like Cristiano Ronaldo, and Cavani who came on and really affected the game, Jesse Lingard as well, Ole Gunnar got his subs right,' Hargreaves told BT Sport.

Along with Lingard, Edinson Cavani (left) was also introduced as a late substitute on the night

'He brought on players that could affect the game, they pushed forward, the energy was there, the crowd was up for it, and Cristiano Ronaldo rises to the occasion.'

Fellow pundit and ex-United striker Michael Owen echoed Hargreaves' sentiments, but felt Solskjaer could have benefitted from bringing on Lingard earlier than the 89th minute.

'The changes certainly did work for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The subs brought so much energy to the game. Cavani, Jesse Lingard, I was surprised Lingard wasn’t the first substitute if I'm honest,' Owen added on BT Sport.

'I would’ve preferred to see Jesse Lingard come on earlier, around the hour mark. Cavani did come on but he also brought Matic on, and I was quite surprised at that.

'He eventually did bring Jesse Lingard, who’s playing so well, it just gave energy. They just looked more of a team, there was a lot more movement up front. Cavani was outstanding when he came on.'

Owen believed the introductions of Cavani and Lingard were key to United's victory at Old Trafford, with Solskjaer's side having now picked up their first win following an opening night defeat at Young Boys where Solskjaer by contrast was criticised for his poor use of substitutions in a 2-1 loss in Switzerland.

'It’s not necessarily about tactics, sometimes it’s just about pressure, it’s about running, getting people off their seats, dragging your teammates with you,' he added.

'You’ve got the energy, the impetus when you come on. You’ve got to lift the game, make something happen, and I thought Cavani did that and Jesse Lingard at the end was the icing on the cake.'
