Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Maguire are 'in a power struggle over Manchester United captaincy - with interim boss Ralf Rangnick holding talks with pair about Portuguese superstar taking armband for rest of the season'

* Man United's Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Maguire have reportedly held talks
* The idea with Ronaldo taking the armband would be to take pressure off Maguire
* Maguire is reluctant to, as he doesn't want to permanently lose the captaincy
* There is now growing belief in the dressing room that it will be inevitable that * Ronaldo will replace Maguire as captain, according to the report

Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Maguire are reportedly locked in a power struggle over the Manchester United captaincy at the moment.

The United pair have, according to a report in The Mirror, been in conversation with interim boss Ralf Rangnick about a change of skipper for the rest of this season.

While the idea behind 37-year-old Ronaldo taking the armband is to take pressure off Maguire, the England international is reluctant to agree as he doesn't want to lose the captaincy permanently.

The report details that there is now a growing belief in the dressing room that Ronaldo will take over as captain, while Maguire struggles for form at centre back.

Cristiano Ronaldo (R) and Harry Maguire (L) are reportedly in talks over the Man Utd captaincy. The United pair have been in conversation with Ralf Rangnick about a change of skipper

A source explained: 'Originally, Ronaldo was asking players to back Harry. But the problem is the manager now wants Ronaldo to mentor all these younger players.

'That's left Harry in no man's land, as he's the captain and having to say and follow whatever Ronaldo says, to keep everything sweet.'

Ronaldo has been mentoring the younger players - as per Rangnick's instructions - since the German arrived in November.

Maguire, on the other hand, is said to feel 'marginalised' by Ronaldo's role in the dressing room.

Ronaldo has, publicly, supported Maguire but that vocal backing is said to have lessened in recent weeks.

Earlier this week, Marcus Rashford rubbished claims of disharmony within Man Utd's squad, insisting that they are all pushing in the same direction.

Maguire is reluctant to agree to giving away the armband as he doesn't want to lose the captaincy permanently. Ronaldo has recently been mentoring the younger players - as per Rangnick's instructions. AS also claim that Ronaldo believes Rangnick does not have the ability to manage United

Yet other attempts from elsewhere in the dressing room have reportedly been made to undermine Rangnick and his coaching staff.

Last week it was claimed that some United players refer to Rangnick's No 2, Chris Armas, as Ted Lasso - the hapless coach in an Apple+ TV series.

Spanish outlet AS also claim that five-time Ballon d'Or winner Ronaldo believes Rangnick does not have the ability to manage United and is out of his depth at Old Trafford.

Although Rangnick gushed over Ronaldo's 'amazing' contribution against Brighton on Tuesday and said it was the 37-year-old's best performance in weeks as United returned to winning ways.

'That was an amazing goal,' Rangnick said. 'Not only an important one but an amazing goal.

'I think overall it was a good performance by Cristiano.

'Energetically, he was on there, he was always trying to help the team-mates so I think in the last weeks definitely the best performance by him and a very, very important goal for us.'

Bruno Fernandes denies claims that Manchester United squad are unhappy with Ralf Rangnick's management and insists he's 'NEVER heard someone complain about the tactics'

* Bruno Fernandes has responded to criticism over Ralf Rangnick's management
* Rumours of discontent amongst the Man Utd squad had begun circulating
* Fernandes claims that he's never heard anyone complain about the tactics
* Rangnick has lost just one league game during his tenure as Red Devils boss

Bruno Fernandes has hit back at claims that the Manchester United squad are unhappy with Ralf Rangnick's tactical approach.

Rumblings of discontent within the United camp had emerged in recent weeks, despite Rangnick losing just one Premier League game in his tenure and the Red Devils sitting fourth in the table.

Similarly with previous his manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Fernandes has decided to speak up in defence of his coach.

Speaking before their clash with Atletico Madrid, Fernandes said: ‘About the formation, nobody has to worry about that more than the coach and his staff,’ said Fernandes.

‘We [the players] have to follow what the manager thinks is the best way for us.

‘In this club I never heard someone complain about the tactics and I hope no-one will do that, it is not respectful.’

The United squad travel to Spain today in preparation for their last-16 Champions League tie against the Spanish giants.

Bruno Fernandes hit back at claims that Man Utd players dislike Ralf Rangnick's approach. Rangnick has lost just one of his 15 games so far during his Manchester United tenure

Rumblings of discontent first came to light after Rangnick admitted to letting go of the likes of Anthony Martial and Donny van de Beek because they were unhappy at the club.

The Red Devils are currently in a position to qualify for the Champions League again next year, but with Arsenal and West Ham following them closely, they'll need a big end to the season to secure that fourth spot.

United's only loss under Rangnick came at the beginning of January as his side were bested 1-0 by Wolves at Old Trafford.

'That dressing room needs a strong manager': Rio Ferdinand lays out his requirements for next Manchester United boss - and insists current crop of players have 'seen-off too many' elite bosses

* Manchester United were held by Atletico Madrid in a 1-1 draw on Wednesday
* Rio Ferdinand doubted United's hope of Champions League glory before kick-off
* Amid dressing room leaks and rocky form, Ralf Rangnick is under pressure
* Ferdinand believes United need a Alex Ferguson-like character to take over

Ralf Rangnick doesn't cut it for Rio Ferdinand, with the defender-turned-pundit calling for a 'strong' manager to replaced the German at Manchester United.

The 20-time English champions were behind for 73 minutes in Madrid before Anthony Elanga's late strike levelled against Atletico, teeing-up the Old Trafford last-16 second leg at 1-1.

But Ferdinand has already dismissed United's chances in this season's Champions League, citing the fractured squad's lack of consistency. He's already thinking ahead to Ralf Rangnick's replacement.

'Managers are important,' the former centre-back told BT Sport.

'I didn't think that until Sir Alex left, you could see the manager had run the place from top to bottom and set the tone, set the culture, the philosophy.

'Everything drives from the manager and filters down from him. United are missing that, they need someone to come in and be strong.

'That dressing room has seen-off far too many managers for it not to have a strong manager go in there to deal with the personalities and to really break it down to people.

Manchester United look set to appoint a new manager in the summer in place of Ralf Rangnick. Rio Ferdinand has stressed the importance United make the right appointment this time. Ralf Rangnick has an option to stay on in his contract but fans and players are not impressed. Ferdinand made the bold claim that United need someone like Sir Alex Ferguson to take over

'Say to some: you might not be as good as you think you are, can you do what I want you to do? If you can't I'll find someone else. They're tough conversations but the best managers have them and they're comfortable at it.'

Erik Ten Haag, Mauricio Pochettino, Antonio Conte and Brendan Rodgers are all front-runners to take over from Rangnick.

Despite only taking over in November, the former RB Leipzig coach is facing heavy criticism for failing to fix a decade of mis-management at United.

'How many times have we been down this road,' Michael Owen added, alongside Ferdinand on BT.

'Since Sir Alex they've gone out and got the best man available every single time, Moyes, Van Gaal, Mourinho.

'They've had so many great managers and let's be honest, none of them have really cracked it with the quality they had. Yes you can say they won a League Cup or Europe League, but come on.

'I think United just need someone with a structure, come rain or shine this is how we're going to play.

'I still watch United and still haven't got a clue what they're trying to achieve, I'm left scratching my head. There's something missing.'

Default Re: Manchester United under Rangnick

Flimsy Manchester United are rigged for failure and in need of rescue after YEARS of poor recruitment… as Ralf Rangnick calls on the club to sign 'physical and aggressive' players to complement their technicians

* Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw with Leicester on Saturday afternoon
* The Foxes took the lead through Kelechi Iheanacho before a quick reply by Fred
* The Red Devils are now seventh and drifting away from a potential top four spot

If the hope for these interim months was that Manchester United might tread water before rescue, then the reality is they look an awful lot like a club slipping further beneath the waves.

With each passing game, the disparity between what Ralf Rangnick sees and what he is capable of fixing grows. If that rings as a criticism of his work at Old Trafford, then it should be balanced against recognition that he is operating in a structure rigged for failure by United's busted recruitment system.

To hear him in the aftermath of Saturday's draw with Leicester, a game contested flimsily by United, was to hear a manager with a number of plausible answers and a longing for his employers to allow the next guy, Erik ten Hag or otherwise, to implement them sensibly.

Increasingly, that new manager looks likely to be charged with getting United back into the top four, because lately there has been little to suggest Rangnick can bridge the gap to Arsenal in his final eight games.

Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw with Leicester at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon. The Red Devils have fallen to seventh and are unlikely to make a Champions League spot now. Interim boss Ralf Rangnick called on the club to sign more 'physical and aggressive' players

Based on their form of the past two months, in which they have won only three of eight in the league and gone out of both Europe and the FA Cup, getting as high as fifth might have to be termed a more obtainable target.

Certainly, his most impactful work seems to be taking place behind the microphone rather than on the training pitch, with his latest observations honing in on flaws in the 'DNA' of his squad.

His thoughts were rooted in the sheer volume of challenges lost or shirked against Leicester, particularly when Kelechi Iheanacho scored. In the build-up, Bruno Fernandes leapt out of the way rather than engaging Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall in a meaty tackle, moments after Fred lost a similar duel.

'That is something we have to get better at and even more so for next season,' said Rangnick.

'It has to be a bit in the DNA of a player. It is difficult to change technically great players into a physical, aggressive player and we have a lot of people who are technical players.'

When it was put to Rangnick that United might have too many players lacking in key traits, his answer fed into a call for United to correct their transfer strategy.

'Both Manchester City and Liverpool have been built together and recruited over a period of five or six years,' he said. 'All of them under the premises of how the coaches want to play. I told the board this is what has to happen.

'Whenever the new head coach is clear, it has to be how does he want to play and what kind of players do we need. Then we come back to DNA, speed, physicality and tempo, what do we need? This team does not lack technical players, it can do with more physicality.'

All fixable in Rangnick's estimation across 'two to three' sensible windows rather than 'three or four years', but it is indisputable that they should be doing more with what they currently have.

Much of that falls on Rangnick himself. With Cristiano Ronaldo ill and Edinson Cavani injured, the manager went with Fernandes as a false nine and the experiment was so flawed that it was dropped early in the second half, with Marcus Rashford brought on.

It is a measure of the latter's struggles that he could not get a start, even in the absence of all other strikers.

'It's our job to help him get his confidence back,' said Rangnick. 'We all know Marcus can play better, but in the end there are steps he has to take himself.'

If there was a slender positive for United, it was that Harry Maguire played well after recent tribulations. Along with Fred, who scored their equaliser, he was the home side's best player, though that says little on another of those days when United were lifeless and devoid of tactical identity.

The other bench was happier. 'Each game we are getting back to our level,' said Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers. That makes one side trending in the right direction.

Default Re: Manchester United under Rangnick

Man United's dressing room is 'SPLIT' over 'UNDERWHELMING' Erik ten Hag becoming their boss - with stars preferring Mauricio Pochettino - and players are also 'baffled' by Ralf Rangnick's calls

* Ajax boss Erik ten Hag is currently the favourite to get the Man United job
* Some players though would prefer PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino to get the role
* It's felt that Ten Hag would be an 'underwhelming' choice as manager
* Meanwhile, players are also frustrated with decisions made by Ralf Rangnick
* This includes the decision to start Marcus Rashford on the bench last weekend

Manchester United's dressing room is split over the potential appointment of Erik ten Hag as the club's next permanent manager.

The Ajax boss is the favourite to land the role ahead of other candidates including Paris-Saint Germain manager Mauricio Pochettino.

The Manchester Evening News have reported that while some players are excited about the possibility of being coached by Ten Hag, others in the dressing room view him as an 'underwhelming' replacement to interim boss Ralf Rangnick.

As reported by Sportsmail in February, a number of players at the club would still like to see Pochettino get the role.

Players in Manchester United's dressing room are reportedly split over whether Mauricio Pochettino (left) or Erik ten Hag (right) should become the club's next manager in the summer. United's players are awaiting news of the new boss amid a dismal Premier League season. Ten Hag is favourite to take the role over Pochettino, but some feel he is 'underwhelming'

This is despite PSG's recent collapse in the Champions League which saw them knocked out of the round of 16 by Real Madrid.

Former United players including Gary Neville and Nicky Butt have also given their backing to Pochettino, despite the former admitting that Ten Hag is the heavy favourite.

Despite some feeling that Pochettino should get the job, the club's hierarchy is edging closer towards Ten Hag to become the club's second Dutch permanent manager following Louis van Gaal.

Ten Hag has already spoken with United about a potential move to Old Trafford and the two clubs enjoy a healthy relationship, with former keeper Edwin van der Sar the chief executive at the Dutch side.

Current frustrations within Old Trafford are ever growing, with interim boss Rangnick unable to turn their fortunes around after the shocking start to the season under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Some decisions have left players baffled, including the one not to start Marcus Rashford during the 1-1 draw with Leicester on Saturday.

Rashford is lacking in confidence and game-time but was expected to start against the Foxes in the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani.

Some players have been left 'baffled' by some decisions made by interim boss Ralf Rangnick. One confusing decision was to start bench Marcus Rashford against Leicester on Saturday

However, he only came on as a 55th-minute substitute, with attacking midfielder Bruno Fernandes playing as a false nine in the lack of a true centre forward on the pitch.

Last week, Ten Hag described United as a 'great club with great fans' in an interview conducted after Ajax had given him permission to speak to United.

'Everyone knows each other in the industry,' Ten Hag told Sport1. 'There are always talks with representatives from other clubs, that's normal.

'Manchester United is a great club with great fans. But I can only repeat myself: my full focus is completely on Ajax. We are already planning for the new season.'

Ten Hag has led Ajax to two Eredivisie and KNVB Cup doubles and his side are currently four points ahead in the title race with PSV Eindhoven with six games to go.

Ajax also have to navigate a KNVB Cup final against PSV on April 17.

One upside for United if they opt for Ten Hag is that they would only need to pay Ajax a £1.7m fee to release him from his contract.

Rangnick, meanwhile, has indicated the club had interviewed more than one candidate for the managerial post - and one is believed to be Pochettino. 'I know they have spoken to some people but so far we haven't spoken about the experience and the impressions they have got from those meetings.'

Meanwhile, Pochettino told Foot Mercato after PSG's 5-1 victory over Lorient: 'If it is possible to stay at PSG next season? For the moment, I am not discussing my future with the leaders of the club.

'I have one year left on my contract, but it is important to analyse before making a decision and afterwards of course, we will also respect the decision taken by the club for the future. What will happen will happen.'

Manchester United are seventh in the Premier League and currently looking like they will miss out on Champions League football next season.

Rangnick has warned it could take as much as 18 months to fix the club's many issues in a damning assessment of the team after their draw with Leicester.

The German is to take on a consultancy role at Old Trafford in the summer and he has already made recommendations to the club's board about how a long-term rebuild should be structured.

Dutchman Ten Hag has described Manchester United as a 'great club with great fans'. Rangnick has warned that it could take 18 months to fix Manchester United's many issues. Rangnick also blasted the DNA of United's players after their 1-1 draw with Leicester

'Manchester City and Liverpool… have been built together and recruited over a period of five or six years - all of them under the premise of how the coaches want to play,' Rangnick said. 'I told the board this is what has to happen [at United].

'Whenever the new head coach is clear, it has to be: how does he want to play and what kind of players do we need for that? Then we come back to DNA, speed, physicality, tempo. What do we need? This team does not lack technical players, it can do with more physicality.

'It takes right decisions and [clarity over] where you want to go: what kind of players, what kind of manager and then, in every transfer window, try to get the best possible.

'This is not rocket science. It has to be done and, if that happens, it does not necessarily need three or four years. Maybe in two or three transfer windows, then the situation could be different.'

United's physicality issues were highlighted in their draw with Leicester, as Kelechi Iheanacho opened the scoring with a free header from eight yards out after no one tracked his run and the Foxes had been allowed to burst forward down the left hand side and deliver a cross.

In a damning assessment of the team's current problems, Rangnick blasted the 'DNA' of players and how they needed to be more aggressive.

'There were quite a few moments where I just felt we could have been more dynamic, more physical, more aggressive but we weren't.

'It has to be a bit in the DNA of a player to be honest. It is difficult to challenge a technically great player into a physical, aggressive one and we have a lot of people who are technical players.

'Leicester were aggressive and physical in many parts of the game and we had problems with them. It is difficult to change. I do not think it is to do with mindset - it is to do with the DNA of the players.'

'It's not rocket science!': Manchester United interim boss Ralf Rangnick insists club's fortunes can turn around in two or three transfer windows... if they follow rivals Liverpool's blueprint

* Ralf Rangnick dismissed concerns of Man Utd going 30 years without a title
* Rangnick says Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool has shown how to turn a club around
* Klopp is chasing the Quadruple this year in what could be a unprecedented feat
* Rangnick takes his side to Anfield on Tuesday night in the Premier League

Ralf Rangnick has warned that Manchester United will stay even longer in the Premier League wilderness unless they copy bitter rivals Liverpool and get their recruitment spot on.

Rangnick dismissed concerns that United could go 30 years without a title like Liverpool despite not winning the league since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.

He believes the club could be turned around in two or three transfer windows if United follow the blueprint used by his German compatriot Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.

But Rangnick fears it will be like finding 'a needle in a haystack' if United don't come up with a clear plan and sign the right players as part of a major overhaul that will begin this summer.

Ralf Rangnick dismissed concerns that Manchester United could go 30 years without a title. He says Utd should follow the blueprint used by German compatriot Jurgen Klopp at Anfield. Rangnick says it is 'pretty obvious' what needs to change as he looks to a 'rebuild for the future'. United were beaten 5-0 by Liverpool in October after going four goals down before half-time

'It's not complicated,' said United's interim boss ahead of Tuesday's trip to Anfield.

'It's not rocket science. But in order to have the best possible wind, you need to know what your destination haven is. If you don't know that, it is always difficult.

'I don't think a club like Manchester United can afford to take three or four years in order to achieve that. I don't think that is necessary.

'We spoke about Liverpool earlier on and how long it took them. It will take two or three windows if you know what you are looking for. If you don't know what you are looking for, it is a needle in a haystack.

'If you know what kind of football you want to play and what kind of profiles for each individual position, then it is about finding them and convincing them to come.

'Liverpool finished eighth (after appointing Klopp in October 2015). The year after they didn't play European football at all, so the full focus in Jurgen's second season was on the Premier League and the national cup competitions.

'Then it took two transfer windows. But even in the other transfer windows that came later on, there has been a lot of very good transfers and signings. This is what it's all about.'

Klopp is chasing the Quadruple this season after winning the European Cup in 2019 and ending Liverpool's 30-year title wait a year later.

Asked if United could face a similar scenario, Rangnick said: 'I suppose this will not happen because it is pretty obvious what needs to change. There needs to be a rebuild for the future.' The 63-year-old also hinted at the need for United to address the fitness and conditioning of their squad, comparing their injury list to Liverpool's.

'This is also an issue that worries me a bit, the number of injuries that we currently have,' he added.

'I compare that with Liverpool. Despite them still competing in four competitions, they have no injury problems at all.

'We play only in the Premier League and we have five or six players injured.. This is an issue that needs to be taken care of for the future. Why is that the case? Why does it happen?'

United were hammered 5-0 by Liverpool at Old Trafford in October after going four goals down before half-time. However, Rangnick insists his 'underdogs' will go for victory at Anfield as they continue to battle Arsenal and Tottenham for fourth place.

'We definitely will try and get three points, this is what it's all about. It's about our situation,' he said.

'We are still in the race for fourth, but to stay in it we have to win almost every game. We might be the underdogs for most people, but if we raise our level we have a chance.'

Roy Keane insists his anger towards Manchester United has now turned to sadness after seeing them get thumped at Liverpool.

A brace from Mohamed Salah and goals from Luis Diaz and Sadio Mane sent the Reds top of the Premier League with a 4-0 win against Ralf Rangnick's men at Anfield.

United, meanwhile, dropped to sixth in the table on goal difference as they suffered another huge blow in their bid to qualify for the Champions League.

And former United captain Keane - who won seven league titles during his 12 years at Old Trafford - believes the club at the moment 'does not reflect' the side he used to play for.

Roy Keane insists his anger towards Manchester United has now turned to sadness. United dropped to sixth in the Premier League table after their 4-0 hammering by Liverpool

'It was anger (as a Man United fan) earlier in the season. Now it's just sadness,' Keane told Sky Sports.

'You look at the team today... I didn't think there was any heart there, no soul, no leaders, they lack real quality.

'They're so far off and you look at the United fans tonight... it's just there's no surprise with the scoreline. You felt Liverpool could score anytime they go forward.

'There's disarray at the club from the top, the board, fans have no time for the owners. They need a new manager, they need players in, they need players out.

'It's so sad to see United it's not the club I played for it doesn't reflect the United I played for it's chalk and cheese. They don't play with pride. It's so sad watching this team it really is. A long night.

Keane's former team-mate Gary Neville said before the game he thought United had a one per cent chance of winning at Anfield, but the Irishman added: 'I thought Gary was being ambitious with that.

'You do look back at the history and think United might turn up, the badge, the quality they might have, but it's not there, so the result nor the scoreline is a surprise.

Keane insists the club is in disarray and says the current players do not play with pride. Keane also slammed United's players for lacking 'soul' and 'real quality' at Anfield. Keane slammed Harry Maguire, saying his role in Mohamed Salah's goal was 'not acceptable'. He said Jesse Lingard is not good enough and Marcus Rashford 'played like a child'. Keane slammed Bruno Fernandes too, claiming that his post-match interviews are 'robotic'

'It's the opposite of what you want in a top team. There's no leaders, no characters, when the going gets tough, they just crumble. Two goals in the second half, and the fourth goal was just such bad defending.

'[There was] no fight or determination. It's a long way back for this club. It's like a completely different club to the one I played for. We used to fight with pride, I think that's gone now.'

Keane however was critical of individuals, slamming Harry Maguire for his role in Salah's second goal on the night, while insisting Jesse Lingard is not good enough for the club and claiming Marcus Rashford played 'like a child'.

'You're hearing the same stuff all season ''we need to be a team, we need to do better'' and we're not seeing it,' Keane continued.

'[Bruno] Fernandes is a talented player but they're not a team. They're good individuals. But when they're under the cosh, they don't have the team spirit they need. This United team is well short of talent. They're not as talented as they think.

'The energy, midfield, Rashford's performance tonight, Jesse Lingard - he came on to change the game but he should have left Man United two years ago.

'He's not good enough for Manchester United. Rashford played like a child up front. Okay, he didn't receive great service but the one or two bits in the first half where you think he's through on goal - poor touch.

'Defensively, we were trying to help Maguire before the game [with a back three], that last goal, his passing and defending was not acceptable. What is he doing? He gambles. He gives up.

'It's not good enough for Man United so we again have to talk about a rebuilding job. We have to hope they get good lads, decent quality professionals, [who are] talented and try to compete. Man United fifth or sixth in the league? Unbelievable.'

Keane then took another dig at Fernandes by describing him as 'robotic' in interviews, but said the whole team 'are now on their holidays' and have 'switched off'.

'My experience of United is brilliant characters, people you'd want to be in the trench with. [Bryan] Robson, [Steve] Bruce, [Gary] Pallister, [Paul] Ince, [David] Beckham, [Ryan] Giggs, [Nicky] Butt - brilliant lads,' Keane continued.

'We didn't win every week. But you'd look around before a game and go ''are we going to give everything we have for this club'' and obviously yeah that's the least you'd expect.

'You don't even warm to this team. It's very robotic in interviews. What's the culture at the training ground? What's the culture with the players? Who are helping these lads along?

'I've never heard about so many players wanting to leave. When I played, why would you want to leave? You might dread that you'd be sold, now players want to leave.

'They've already left the building you can tell. Particularly lads with contracts up. [I have] seen it at Everton. They're on their holidays. They've switched off. Come to Anfield, they don't turn up, lose 4-0, shaking hands. They should be hiding.'

United will now attempt to bounce back when they face Arsenal - who now sit in fifth and have played two games fewer than the Red Devils - at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday lunchtime.

Default Re: Manchester United under Rangnick

'I should have done BETTER': Ralf Rangnick takes the blame for Man United's dismal season... as he admits that he has had to make 'compromises' after realising that Cristiano Ronaldo 'is not a pressing monster'

* Ralf Rangnick was placed in charge for the final six months of the season
* He has failed to guide Manchester United to a top-four finish this term
* He has accepted that he should be blamed for his side's failings
* Rangnick has hinted that he should have realised Cristiano Ronaldo would struggle to press from the front

Ralf Rangnick has accepted blame for Manchester United’s collapse this season by acknowledging he shouldn’t have expected a team spearheaded by Cristiano Ronaldo to adopt an energetic press.

Rangnick wanted to bring a high-octane game to Old Trafford when he replaced Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in November but was unable to find a successful Plan B when it became clear the current squad weren’t suited to that.

United have lost their last five away games and need to beat Crystal Palace today to be sure of finishing sixth and avoid dropping into the Europa Conference League next season when Erik ten Hag will be in charge. Rangnick admitted: ‘We never came near to that aggressive, pro-active football I’d normally want to do. It has to do with physicality if you want to play like that. I should have done better and developed this team in a more sustainable way.

‘I am not blaming Cristiano at all, he did great in games, but he is not a pressing monster. Even when he was young, he wasn’t shouting, “The other team has the ball, where can we win balls?”

Ralf Rangnick has admitted that he should have done better during his time at Man United. Rangnick has said he should have accepted Cristiano Ronaldo's lack of pressing sooner. Rangnick fully expects incoming manager Erik ten Hag to make changes to the squad

‘It was the same with quite a few other players so we had to make compromises at one stage. We never found the right balance between what do we need with the ball and without the ball.’

Rangnick will be the Austrian national team manager next season but will retain a smaller role at United as a consultant.

He says the appointment of Ten Hag should at least give United an idea of what type of players they need in the summer transfer window when there will be spaces in the squad with Juan Mata, Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard all leaving.

‘If you saw the way that Erik’s Ajax team play or his Under 23s team at Bayern Munich, it’s pretty obvious how he wants to play and clear what kind of players he needs.

‘There will be changes. I think it’s obvious to everybody, the owners and every supporter, we need to increase and raise the level of quality within the squad.’

It’s a sign of how far United have fallen that the target is qualifying for the Europa League.

They are currently in sixth position two points ahead of West Ham but have an inferior goal difference. West Ham are at Brighton and the ‘prize’ for finishing seventh is going into the Conference League.
