Default Ralf Rangnick's Coaching Team

Manchester United set to appoint sports psychologist Sascha Lense and coach Chris Armas as part of Ralf Rangnick's overhaul of backroom staff at Old Trafford with pair awaiting work visas

* Ralf Rangnick has begun his coaching overhaul at Manchester United
* Sportsmail revealed the new interim is set to hire ex-Toronto boss Chris Armas
* Now reports claim German sports psychologist Sascha Lense is also set to join
* Lense knows Rangnick from their time together at German club RB Leipzig

Ralf Rangnick is close to recruiting two new staff for his Manchester United backroom team this week.

Coach Chris Armas and highly-rated sports psychologist Sascha Lense are awaiting work visas ahead of becoming part of Rangnick's new-look staff.

Lense was introduced to players at United's Carrington training base on Monday. The 46-year-old former midfielder previously worked with Rangnick at Schalke and Red Bull Leipzig but will have to wait for clearance on his visa before he can begin applying his well-regarded techniques to United's squad.

Armas, the 49-year-old former New York Red Bulls and Toronto FC coach, has also applied for his work visa ahead of being cleared to join up with Kieran McKenna and Mike Phelan.

Manchester United are reportedly set to hire sports psychologist Sascha Lense as a coach to support Ralf Rangnick. Lense (right) knows United interim boss Rangnick (left) from their time together at RB Leipzig. Lense has held sports psychologist roles as Dynamo Dresden, Leipzig and Schalke

Rangnick is expected to discuss the new additions at his press conference on Tuesday. However, United are awaiting the customary visa process to be completed before confirming the appointments.

Rangnick knows Armas from his work with Red Bull and has been looking to appoint up to three new coaches or analysts as he moves forward, particularly after Michael Carrick left United last week.

Jesse Marsch, who was sacked as manager of Red Bull Leipzig on Sunday, has also been discussed but is understood to hold some reservations about fulfilling a role as assistant again after stepping up to be head coach.

'About the coaching, I'm more than happy to work with them,' explained Rangnick. 'I need their expertise and experience regarding the current squad.

'I want to find one, two or three to join us but due to Brexit regulations, it's not that easy.

'Many of my former colleagues are tied up in long-term contracts with big clubs so they are not available right now. We need to be smart and clever and find the right names, hopefully in one or two weeks but I don't know.'

Armas was sacked as coach of Toronto FC in July after they lost 7-1 to DC United with Toronto president Bill Manning saying: 'When you see a team concede like we did, we just saw no way back outside of making the coaching change.'

However, during his one full season in charge at New York, statistics showed they had the fastest ball recoveries in the MLS, with the highest press, and played the most direct attacking style - traits accustomed with Rangnick's methods.

Former Toronto manager Chris Armas (above) is also set to join the United coaching staff. Rangnick was head of sport and development for Red Bull's clubs in New York and Brazil while Armas was head coach of the American team. Armas only last six months in his role with Toronto, having been fired after an awful 7-1 defeat. Armas will become Rangnick's assistant manager after getting his work permit

Rangnick made a promising start to his interim reign at United winning 1-0 against Crystal Palace. He changed training time immediately last Friday as players came in after 2pm following their 3-2 win over Arsenal on Thursday.

They trained at 3pm as Rangnick implemented his preferred 4-2-2-2 system. They had another training session on Saturday, again at 3pm, which was disrupted by the turbulent weather so they had little more than 45 minutes outside.

Rangnick took time going through video footage and speaking individually to his new players and explaining how they would work in groups as he ensured they were as well prepared as time allowed.

United face Young Boys on Wednesday in the Champions League.

Ralf Rangnick wants to get into the ‘hearts, brains and blood’ of his players, and yesterday it became clear jT

he United boss confirmed the arrival of Sascha Lense, a leading psychologist who had a modest playing career in the German second division, as he stressed the importance of training his players’ brains.st what Manchester United’s new interim manager means.

In his determination to make an impact on this squad as quickly as possible, Rangnick has already enlisted some help in the brains department by appointing United’s first full-time sports psychologist for 20 years.

Not since Sir Alex Ferguson’s former No 2 Steve McClaren brought in Bill Beswick in the late 1990s have United employed an expert in this field, but it was an obvious move for Rangnick.

Rangnick said: ‘I don’t know what the situation is like here, but in Germany most clubs have employed sports psychologists or mental coaches — whatever you would like to call them.

‘For me it is absolutely logical. If you have specialist coaches for goalkeeping, physical education, strikers, fitness, you should also have an expert for the brain.

‘For me it is about helping the players understand that the brain should assist the body, not work against it. The players and everybody in our team should think in the right way.

‘Whenever we speak about football, we know that the major part is up here: what do you think? How do you analyse the situation?

‘I’m very happy to have Sascha on board. For me, it is vital that we should have the best possible person in this job.’

Rangnick has drawn heavily on his contacts at the Red Bull organisation. He worked with Lense at RB Leipzig and has brought in former New York Red Bulls boss Chris Armas as first-team coach, having also sounded out Armas’s successor Gerhard Struber.

Lense and Armas are expected to start before the end of the week once work permits are approved, and their appointments demonstrate Rangnick’s desire to instil a clear philosophy at United.

‘For me, success can only be achieved with development,’ he added. ‘It’s about gaining confidence and believing in the way we are playing.

‘The players have to buy in. I can tell them whatever I want, but I need to convince them.

‘I have to get into their heart, into their brains, into their blood so they make my idea of football their own. The first step has been taken — now it’s the next steps.’

Former Toronto manager Chris Armas (above) is also joining the United coaching staff. Rangnick is looking to bolster his backroom staff as he plots to turn things around at United

That first step was beating Crystal Palace on Sunday. The next one comes on Wednesday night when United face Young Boys in their final Champions League Group F match at Old Trafford, having already qualified for the knockout stage.

It offers Rangnick the chance to rest key players and give others like Dean Henderson and Donny van de Beek rare starts, although Anthony Martial misses out due to a knee injury.

His old friend Thomas Tuchel won the Champions League at Chelsea last season just four months after starting the job, but Rangnick isn’t making any bold predictions now he finds himself in a similar position.

‘It’s too early,’ added Rangnick, whose last game in this competition at Old Trafford ended with a 6-1 aggregate defeat in the 2011 semi-finals with Schalke.

‘Obviously with a club like Manchester United, the ambition is to be as successful as we can be in all competitions,’ he said. ‘But we’ve been here for only a week.’

Manchester United confirm deal for performance analyst Ewan Sharp to join the coaching staff, with the ex-Toronto coach having worked with boss Ralf Rangnick - and new assistant Chris Armas - twice before

* Interim boss Ralf Rangnick has appointed another new coach at Manchester Utd
* Both Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna have left their roles in recent weeks
* Ewan Sharp first worked with Rangnick as an analyst at New York Red Bulls
* He was also a coach at Lokomotiv Moscow, where Rangnick worked before Utd

Ralf Rangnick has continued to make his mark on Manchester United by bringing in Ewan Sharp as the club's new assistant coach and analyst.

Sharp is the third addition to United's back-room staff since Rangnick became interim manager last month following the arrivals of assistant coach Chris Armas and sports psychologist Sascha Lense.

The Scotsman has followed Rangnick to Old Trafford from Lokomotiv Moscow just a month after taking up a coaching role in the Russian capital.

Sharp, who arrived at United's Carrington training ground in the same car as Rangnick to start his new job on Wednesday, has previously worked with Armas at New York Red Bulls and Toronto FC.

His appointment is the latest change to United's coaching set-up since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked last month.

Both of Solskjaer's first-team coaches, Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna, have since left the club. Carrick stepped down after three games as caretaker boss and McKenna has taken over as manager at Ipswich Town.

Sharp was previously part of new United assistant Chris Armas' (centre) staff at Toronto FC

It's unclear if the contracts signed by Sharp, Armas and Lense extend beyond the end of the season when Rangnick's spell as interim manager is due to end and he will take up a two-year consultancy role at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, the majority of United's squad are back in training after the club's last two games were postponed due to a Covid outbreak.

First-team operations resumed on Tuesday and Marcus Rashford said on Wednesday: 'There are only a couple of players left who will be coming in tomorrow so we've pretty much got the full squad back.'

Erik ten Hag must 'engage' with Cristiano Ronaldo to keep him at Man United, insists Ralf Rangnick's assistant Chris Armas... as he insists the wantaway star still has 'so much to give' at Old Trafford

* Chris Armas was assistant to Ralf Rangnick at Manchester United last season
* He worked with Cristiano Ronaldo, who now wants to leave the Red Devils
* Armas has urged Erik ten Hag to take a hands-on approach to keep Ronaldo

Former Manchester United coach Chris Armas has urged Erik ten Hag to take a hands-on approach to ensure Cristiano Ronaldo remains at Old Trafford.

Armas served as assistant to Ralf Rangnick during the German's beleaguered six-month spell as interim manager last season.

He worked alongside Ronaldo, who now wishes to leave the club, after United failed to qualify for the Champions League by missing out on the top four.

Armas has told Sky Sports that Ten Hag must engage with their star player, believing that he still has 'so much to give' to the Red Devils.

The American said: 'He's a big part of the team and he's still a guy that produced so it would be my job to figure out how to get all that talent and all that fire and experience of winning and challenge him as much as I could.

'I think the most important thing is to engage with Cristiano. He's got so much to give, again his commitment to winning and scoring.

'Each guy has their different type of leadership - he can certainly be a leader in his way and my goal like everyone else on the roster was "how can I get the best out of Cristiano?"

'So I do think that's a hands-on approach, it's speaking with him, it's bringing him into the office, it's asking him questions. So he's part of the solutions and part of the success.'

United are hoping for a big improvement this season under new manager Ten Hag, after Rangnick's short spell in charge was widely ridiculed.

A number of reports have suggested that United's players were less than impressed with both Rangnick and his coaching staff.

It was said that former New York Red Bulls and Toronto FC manager Armas was compared to Ted Lasso - the protagonist in the Apple TV+ series where an American college football coach is hired to manage a Premier League side, after only having experience in American football.

Players were less than impressed that much of the sessions were led by Armas and by the emphasis on regular organisational and shape work instead of drills to improve skills.

The club showed signs of improvement when Rangnick first came in, before eventually tailing off again and finishing sixth in the table - 13 points off the top four.

Armas though said that a lot of the stories about unrest behind the scenes at Old Trafford were untrue.

He said: 'So when things are trying to penetrate and negativity comes from the outside - to be honest with you, a lot of it was untrue. It does create negativity.'

Armas added: 'After the Champions League exit, not getting the result at home, we let that one go for sure, you could see the air got sucked out a little bit on what we were doing and it got difficult down that stretch.

'It was disappointing in the end but overall an incredible experience for me.'

Despite his desire to leave the club, Ronaldo has been training with the club and made his return against Spanish outfit Rayo Vallecano on Sunday.

He played just 45 minutes before departing the ground ahead of the full-time whistle.

It has been reported that he will start on the bench for United's opening game of the season against Brighton.
