Hull caretaker manager Mike Phelan warns his side that celebrations will be at a minimum without investment

* Mike Phelan insists that Hull have no chance without additions to the side
* The caretaker manager inspired his players to beat Leicester on Saturday
* Hull fans have protested at the club's hierarchy on a number of occasions
* Former boss Steve Bruce resigned in July due a lack of squad investment

Hull caretaker manager Mike Phelan has warned the club's morale-boosting start to the season will be unsustainable without new signings.

The Tigers conjured the unlikeliest of 2-1 victories over champions Leicester in the first match of the Premier League season, to a background of fan protests, injury problems and Steve Bruce's departure.

Bruce was highly frustrated by the club's ponderous approach to recruitment before walking out and they remain the only top-flight side who have yet to sign a senior player.

Mike Phelan has warned Hull their celebrations can't last without investment to the squad

On Saturday that left Phelan with just 13 first-teamers, augmented by five academy players on a threadbare bench - and he admits things cannot go on like that.

Whether new arrivals are signed off by the unpopular Allam family, or the Chinese consortium currently involved in takeover talks, is not important to Phelan as long as they come.

'There has to be new players coming into a football club,' he told BBC Radio 5 Live's Sportsweek.

Phelan insists the current Hull players need help and that they will fall behind otherwise

'The club won't be able to sustain a push in the Premier League without the influx of new players.

'Everyone is doing it and Hull City are a little bit behind in bringing new players. Everything boils down to whatever stage the owners are at with the sale of the club but movement has to be made quickly.

'It's not too long to go now before the transfer deadline. It's important we get some answers.'

Robert Snodgrass was the Tigers' match-winner against Leicester, burying a first-time drive in the 57th minute.

A remarkable synchronised bicycle kick from Adama Diomande and Abel Hernandez had already been cancelled out by Riyad Mahrez's penalty, and Snodgrass hailed the heart his team showed to hang in for victory.

'We were the underdogs and everybody was tipping us to lose the game but when that happens there is something about this squad that makes us dig deep,' he said.

'We stick together as a unit - we don't let what people are saying about us affect us. We wanted to show what got us to the Premier League in the first place - hard work and determination - because that is what this squad is built on.

'We rolled our sleeves up and we were ready for a battle.'

Foxes skipper Wes Morgan conceded his side were off the pace as they became the first ever Premier League champions to start their title defence with defeat.

'Obviously we're very disappointed. We showed a lot of rust and I felt we were second best throughout,' he said.

'I felt we just didn't kick on from 1-1 and we probably dropped off if anything. Hull were winning first balls and we weren't picking up any second balls.

'We need to learn from the errors and get it right for the next game.'

Mike Phelan speaks for the first time as new Hull City manager and admits after appointment saga: 'It's been a while in coming'

* Phelan has been confirmed as Hull City's new permanent manager
* Sir Alex Ferguson's former assistant was named temporary manager this summer after Steve Bruce walked away
* 'It's been a while in coming, but I'm happy with the position,' he said
* The Tigers are currently 15th in the Premier League table

Mike Phelan has finally been confirmed as permanent manager of Hull City - 83 days after replacing Steve Bruce as caretaker boss.

Bruce was installed at Aston Villa this week and his first appointment has been that of Hull coach Stephen Clemence, leaving Phelan without an assistant boss. Phelan, though, is set to keep goalkeeping coach Gary Walsh.

The former Manchester United No.2 had expected to be handed the permanent job far sooner after defying the odds to win the first three matches of the season following a turbulent summer in which Bruce quit and no new players arrived before the last week of August.

Hull City have confirmed the appointment of Mike Phelan as their permanent manager

Progress has stalled since and Hull have lost four of the last five in the Premier League.

Phelan, however, remained in talks with the owning Allam family and has now signed a £1.5million deal until the end of this campaign.

‘It's been a while in coming, but I'm happy with the position I am now in and looking forward to the challenge ahead,’ said the 54-year-old.

‘It has taken time but things have to be done correctly with these matters. What is important now is that we move forward and help this squad of players be successful for this football club.

‘It's exciting to step over that threshold into management, and I'm looking forward to working with this group of players that has done so well so far.

‘The support I have received from everyone has been magnificent and I want that to continue because the challenges ahead are huge.

The fans have been excellent through the last few months and the players have given me their full backing.’

Hull take on Bournemouth on Saturday and academy boss Tony Pennock will travel as part of the back-room team.

Hull City sack Mike Phelan as manager after fallout over club's plan for the transfer window

* Mike Phelan was sacked as manager of struggling Hull City on Tuesday night
* Phelan lasted just 82 days in his first job as manager of the Tigers
* Hull are bottom of the Premier League after 20 games this season

Mike Phelan was sacked as Hull City boss after a row about January spending.

The former Manchester United assistant lasted just 82 days in his first job as manager, having been appointed in October after three months in caretaker charge.

But Phelan had become frustrated over the club's refusal to commit to investment in his playing squad and a statement on Tuesday night confirmed they had parted company.

Mike Phelan was sacked as manager of Hull City on Tuesday after falling out with the board

Former Birmingham City boss Gary Rowett is the man the Premier League's bottom club want to appoint. Rowett - sacked by Birmingham last month - was on Hull's shortlist in the summer Steve Bruce resigned, but when a proposed takeover of Chinese investors collapsed, the owning Allam family decided to stick with Phelan.

Wales boss Chris Coleman had been their preferred choice and he did consider an offer. Coleman, though, is set to remain in charge of the national team.

Hull have now been up for sale for 1,000 days and appear no closer to finding a suitable buyer.

The Allams are reluctant to spend this month despite the club's position.

Phelan's side had gone nine without victory and had won just one of the last 18 league matches.

Supporters continue to protest against how the club is run and the Allams could find it difficult to land their top managerial targets.

Hull City sacked Mike Phelan for 'fresh approach' and hope to have new boss in charge of weekend's FA Cup clash

* Mike Phelan was sacked as manager of struggling Hull City on Tuesday night
* The club's vice-chairman Ehab Allam said the strugglers want 'fresh approach'
* Hull expect to have new boss in charge of Saturday's FA Cup third-round game
* Phelan lasted just 82 days in his first job as boss of relegation-threatened side

Hull City expect to have their new manager in place for the weekend's FA Cup fixture against Swansea after opting to sack Mike Phelan on Tuesday for 'a fresh approach'.

The former Manchester United assistant lasted just 82 days in his first job as the No 1, having been appointed in October after three months in caretaker charge.

Phelan only had 13 Premier League games in charge as Hull City manager before leaving

And vice-chairman, Ehab Allam, released a statement on Wednesday explaining the reasons behind Phelan's surprise departure and said the club hope to have the new manager in charge for the FA third round clash with the Swans on Saturday.

'It was after a great amount of consideration that we took the decision to part company with Mike Phelan on Tuesday and I would like to place on record my thanks to Mike for his efforts during his period as head coach,' he said.

'Despite the difficult circumstances, the team made a positive start to the season and money was made available to strengthen the squad ahead of the transfer deadline with a significant investment made in the signing of six new players.

'However, results have been on the decline since that time and although there have been some positive performances in recent weeks, we sit bottom of the Premier League.

'I felt now was the right time to take a fresh approach and give this club and squad of players the best possible chance of retaining Premier League status.

'I expect to have a new management team in place ahead of the weekend.'

Hull dropped to bottom of the Premier League on Tuesday following Swansea's win at Crystal Palace, giving the new boss an even harder task of avoiding relegation.

Allam, however, maintains his belief that Hull, who are three points from safety with 20 matches played, can remain in the top-flight with at least two January signings.

'I maintain the belief that the current squad, with two or three key additions during the current transfer window, is good enough to survive in this division,' he added.

'I acknowledge that our position in the table will make recruitment more challenging, however all of our efforts are now focused on enhancing the existing squad with Premier League survival our priority.'

Phelan was sacked as City boss after a row about January spending, becoming frustrated over the club's refusal to commit to investment in his playing squad.

Kasihan Mike Phelan, hanya bertahan selama 82 hari saja di Hull City.
Semoga pengalaman singkat tersebut tidak membuatnya kapok untuk berkarir sebagai manajer klub

PHELAN BACKS REDS IN CELTA VIGO SEMI-FINAL

Ex-Manchester United player, coach and assistant-manager Mike Phelan has backed the Reds to secure a positive result from Thursday’s Europa League semi-final, first leg at Celta Vigo.

Phelan was a long-term member of Sir Alex Ferguson’s backroom staff between the years 2001 and 2013, during which time the club developed a formula for success in European away matches.

You can’t win every game, naturally, but those United teams were generally impressive when playing the first leg away. Results like the 2-0 quarter-final win at AS Roma in 2008, the 3-2 last-eight success at AC Milan in 2010 and the 2-0 semi-final victory at FC Schalke in 2011 are all highlighted below.

Jose Mourinho's men face a testing game against La Liga side Celta on Thursday night, but Phelan is confident the Reds can secure a positive result ahead of finishing the semi-final tie at Old Trafford.

“Going away in Europe is a different challenge,” Phelan explained during his weekend visit to Beijing for the club’s #ILOVEUNITED event. “You have got to get everything prepared properly, you have got to be in the right frame of mind, you have got to have the right players available for that game.

"But you have also got to be patient. It is a two-legged affair and you are away from home first, so the importance is to be in the tie for the second leg. That is the experience we gained over the years.

“Jose will be solid, he will be diligent to the fact that Celta Vigo have been one of the better teams in the competition and he will know his stuff. He’s been at the highest level, he knows what Europe is all about, knows how to conduct himself and he knows how to motivate the players for a semi-final tie.”

FIVE CLASSIC FIRST-LEG AWAY WINS

Lille 0 United 1, Champions League second round, 20/02/2007
This was a perfect result in France, although it was not without controversy after the Lille players angrily left the pitch following Ryan Giggs's late winner from a quick free-kick. The home side claimed it wasn’t a protest, but Sir Alex said: “I have never seen that before in all my years in football.”

Roma 0 United 2, Champions League quarter-final, 01/04/2008

Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney scored vital away goals to leave the Italians in shock. “We can't take anything for granted, but we definitely feel like we can reach the semi-finals," said Ferguson. “It was a marvellous result. We showed discipline and composure on the ball.”

AC Milan 2 United 3, Champions League second round, 16/02/2010
United secured a first win at the San Siro but it wasn’t easy. Ronaldinho broke the deadlock, Paul Scholes levelled and two Rooney headers put the Reds ahead, before Clarence Seedorf struck late on. David Beckham played for the Italians and conceded “Rooney is obviously on fire again.”

Chelsea 0 United 1, Champions League quarter-final, 06/04/2011
Okay, this was in England, but the rules remained the same and Rooney's away goal was key. United were well organised and industrious, frustrating Carlo Ancelotti's Blues, who were denied appeals for a late spot-kick. “It was the first penalty decision we've got here in seven years, so we're due one,” Sir Alex said.

Schalke 0 United 2, Champions League semi-final, 26/04/2011
Schalke had beaten Inter Milan 7-3, but they couldn’t match the Reds as Giggs and Rooney scored. The margin would have been greater, too, without Manuel Neuer’s heroics. “Anyone who saw this gulf in class will not believe in a miracle at Old Trafford,” wrote German newspaper Bild.
