Manchester United given timely boost with Anthony Martial returning to training, as forward harbours faint hopes of making France's World Cup squad after six games out

* Anthony Martial has been out for the club's last six games with a back problem
* Timely boost for Manchester United in final push before season breaks for Qatar
* Erik ten Hag had said he was not sure whether he would play again before break

Anthony Martial gave Manchester United a boost when he returned to first-team training at Carrington on Monday.

United boss Erik ten Hag admitted last week that he wasn’t sure if Martial would be back in action before the World Cup after missing the last six matches with a back injury.

But the Frenchman rejoined his team-mates in training on Monday with four matches still to go before the tournament kicks off.

Martial has revived his United career under Ten Hag following a spell on loan at Sevilla last season, but has made just four appearances after suffering three separate injuries since the Dutchman took over. The 26-year-old tweaked a hamstring in a pre-season friendly against Atletico Madrid and then hurt his back at Everton last month less than half an hour into his return from an achilles problem.

Although Martial has not given up hope of helping France defend the World Cup in Qatar, his former United team-mate Paul Pogba has been ruled out of the tournament with a thigh injury.

Pogba suffered his latest setback while recovering from knee surgery and is yet to play a competitive game for Juventus since rejoining the Italian club as a free agent in the summer.

Anthony Martial has returned to Manchester United training in a timely pre-World Cup boost. The United forward last played for the club in a 2-1 win over Everton at the beginning of October

United on Monday announced plans for a week’s training camp in Spain and a friendly against Cadiz on December 7 as part of their preparations to restart the season after the World Cup.

A second friendly will be confirmed soon and Ten Hag said: ‘It’s a strange season. It’s not like usual as we have a World Cup, but also players will stay behind. We have to train them during those six weeks and we have to give them the right programme so they stay at the right fitness levels.’

Meanwhile, former United defender Gary Neville has stepped down as chief executive of Salford City and handed over the reins to his old team-mate Nicky Butt. Neville, who will remain a co-owner of the League Two team, said: ‘As the club has developed with such pace it needs someone who can concentrate on it and be there every day.’

Raphael Varane 'IS set to be fit for the World Cup' in a huge boost for France boss Didier Deschamps... after the Man United star's chances of making the tournament were plunged into doubt when he came off in tears against Chelsea

* The Manchester United defender went off injured against Chelsea last month
* It had been feared that he would miss this winter's World Cup through injury
* Now believed he will be fit for France's campaign which gets underway on 22nd

Manchester United defender Raphael Varane is set to be fit for the World Cup despite limping off in tears last month against Chelsea.

The defender came off in the second half against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge with a thigh injury and has been undergoing his rehabilitation at Clarefontaine - the French national football centre.

Concerns had grown that Varane, who was key to France's success in Russia in 2018, would not be fit in time for the World Cup owing to the short turnaround time between the season ending and their campaign getting underway.

However, it has since been reported by L’Equipe that the defender's rehab remains on the correct timescale with the national side confident he will be ready to go for the tournament.

France's campaign gets underway on November 22 when they take on Australia.

Varane has resumed running in recent days as his preparations and recovery step up a notch, though it is not expected that he will play in either of United's remaining two games before the break.

Raphael Varane is set to be fit for France's World Cup defence which begins on November 22. The defender was key to their success in 2018 and Didier Deschamps will be relying on him to lead what could be an inexperienced backline

United host Aston Villa in the League Cup on Thursday before a visit to Fulham on Sunday that wraps up their competitive action until December 27 when they welcome Nottingham Forest.

Didier Deschamps is set to name his final 26-man squad on Wednesday with France bidding to become the first country since Brazil in 1962 to retain their crown.

A week ago, Varane posted a photo of himself smiling on his social media captioned: 'Thank you everyone for the kind messages this week. I have been working! Feeling good. Good luck today boys.'

Deschamps will thus be relying on Varane to lead what could be an otherwise quite inexperienced side with the likes of N'Golo Kante and Paul Pogba missing and concerns over the form of Antoine Griezmann.

It was reported by Get French Football News that Varane will start in a 3-4-1-2 formation alongside William Saliba and Benoit Badiashile, neither of whom has played in a major tournament for the national team.

Both Saliba and Badiashile made their international debuts this year.

Jadon Sancho MISSES Manchester United's warm-weather training camp in Spain 'to continue an individual training programme to get him back to his highest level' after being left at home by England

* Jadon Sancho won't be part of the Manchester United squad for their Spain trip
* The winger will instead continue with his own individual training programme
* United will play friendlies against Cadiz and Real Betis during their time in Spain

Jadon Sancho is missing Manchester United’s training camp in Spain to focus on getting over his recent problems.

Sancho was left out of England’s squad for the World Cup having not played for United since October due to illness, and travelled to the Netherlands last month to work with coaches recommended by manager Erik ten Hag.

The 23-year-old also deactivated his social media to concentrate on his family and the second half of the season, according to club sources.

Sancho’s United career has shown signs of taking off under Ten Hag, but he has yet to hit the heights expected of him following a £73million move from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2021.

United confirmed on Sunday that Sancho has not been included in the squad for this week’s camp, which also includes friendlies against Cadiz and Real Betis, because he is ‘continuing his individual training programme as part of a process to get back to his highest level’.

David de Gea, Anthony Martial and Donny van de Beek, three of United’s other stars who missed out on the World Cup, were among the party who travelled to southern Spain on Saturday.

Ten Hag’s side face Cadiz on Wednesday and Real Betis in Seville on Saturday before returning to Carrington to step up their preparations for when the season resumes after the World Cup later this month.

Raphael Varane's injury in the World Cup final 'was only fatigue' and the defender 'could play for Man United again before 2022 is out' despite limping off in extra time for France

* Reports have suggested Raphael Varane's injury on Sunday was only fatigue
* The France defender limped off in extra time during the World Cup final
* He had been struggling with an injury prior to the tournament at Man United
* The 29-year-old could play for his club side again before the end of the year

Manchester United defender Raphael Varane is expected to return to club action soon after an report emerged his injury suffered in the World Cup final isn't serious.

The France man limped off the field in extra time after pulling up when trying to clear a ball, striking fear into United fans having suffered with injury issues this season.

But, according to Manchester Evening News, the injury was only caused by fatigue, and he will be fine to return to playing after he gets back from a break following the tournament.

Varane had missed the last three Premier League games for his club before the World Cup and had feared he would miss the tournament in Qatar with an ankle issue.

But he was fine to play for France, managing an impressive 621 minutes for Didier Deschamps' side as they made it to their second final in as many tournaments.

The defender limped off injured from the World Cup final in extra time playing for France. It has been reported that the issue was only fatigue, and any injury is not though to be serious

It is believed that Varane was one of the players impacted by a virus that plagued the French side in the build-up to Sunday's final, but he recovered in time to start his sixth game out of seven at the Lusail Stadium.

He was substituted for Liverpool's Ibrahima Konate in the 23rd minute of extra time and was offered help back to the dugout by members of France's medical team.

He firstly put his arm round a medic, but then moved away before showing signs of frustration as he walked off the pitch.

Varane collapsed in the 23rd minute of stoppage time when clearing a ball forward. He ended up on the losing side, but is unlikely to play for United on December 27. Varane had struggled with injury issues for United earlier this season but recovered in time for the World Cup

It seems that was in frustration as the scoreline in the game however, with his side 3-2 down having come back from a deficit of 2-0 to take the game past 90 minutes.

United face Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford on December 27 in their first game back after the tournament, a game Varane was expected to miss anyway given France's run to the final.

He could be back to take on Wolves on December 30, with fellow central defender Lisandro Martinez also expected back late having won the World Cup with Argentina.

Man United midfielder Donny van de Beek goes off in tears after suffering HORROR knee injury during his side's win against Bournemouth - in more bad luck for the Dutchman on just his second Premier League start of the season

Manchester United's Donny van de Beek has left the field in tears after receiving a nasty knee injury against Bournemouth.

The midfielder, on just his second Premier League start of the season, was substituted off at the end of the first half on Tuesday evening after Marcos Senesi slipped and slid into his leg.

Surrounded by medical staff, Van de Beek limped off, covering his face to hide his emotion, with manager Erik ten Hag later admitting: ‘We need to wait 24 hours, but it’s not looking good.'

The incident, in the 42nd minute of a game United went on to win 3-0, saw Cherries defender Senesi racing towards the Dutchman to contest a 50-50 tackle.

However, the Argentine centre back slipped on the wet surface, his tucked left knee accidentally smashing into Van de Beek.

Social media footage then shows Van de Beek's right leg crumpling under the tackle in a horror moment.

Van de Beek covered his face as he left the pitch to hide his emotion - it is more bad luck for the 25-year-old on just his second Premier League start of the season for Erik ten Hag's outfit

The former Ajax star, 25, immediately cried out in agony, with team-mates and opponents quickly realising the severity of the injury.

It was only £40million signing Van de Beek's second Premier League start of the season, with just 162 league minutes played across the entire league campaign so far.

And it now seems he will be out for the foreseeable future, with knee injuries involving notoriously long and painstaking recovery processes.

Casemiro, Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford were all on the scoresheet for United, who moved to one point away from champions Manchester City in the table.

Erik ten Hag is still waiting to discover how long Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek is likely to be out for as medical staff assess the severity of his knee injury

* Donny van de Beek picked up the knock against Bournemouth on Tuesday night
* Van de Beek, 25, limped off tearfully and now faces a long spell on the sidelines
* Erik ten Hag admitted that the injury 'does not look good', as they await scans

Manchester United's medical team are still investigating the injury to Donny van de Beek's right knee before they will know how long the Dutchman faces on the sidelines.

Van de Beek hobbled out of Tuesday's win over Bournemouth before half-time in some distress after his leg bent backwards under a challenge from Marcos Senesi who slipped before colliding with the United player.

It was a cruel end to what was only Van de Beek's sixth Premier league start for United in two-and-a-half years at Old Trafford, and Erik ten Hag admitted after the game that the injury 'did not look good'.

Asked for an update ahead of United's FA Cup third-round clash with Everton on Friday night, the manager was still unable to give much clarity over Van de Beek's condition.

'Not really, we are still doing investigations,' said Ten Hag, who confirmed that Anthony Martial is fit after he also went off against Bournemouth.

Ten Hag is hoping to deliver United's first trophy since 2017 as United kick off their FA Cup campaign before facing Charlton Athletic in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup at Old Trafford on Tuesday. His team are fourth in the Premier League and also face Barcelona in a Europa League play-off next month.

The Dutchman agreed that winning silverware can be the launchpad to more success, not least because it gets players into the winning habit and mind-set.

'We have a lot of opportunities to win a trophy, we are still in many competitions,' added Ten Hag. 'To win a trophy is something great. It will give you experience and help you to win more titles and more trophies, maybe also bigger trophies. That is definitely true.

'So first you have to go over the limit and get that experience, because it's always the same players winning trophies and that's not a coincidence.

'It has to do, of course, with his capabilities and often with mentality. I think we have some players in this team who have that experience and can help us.'

Man United given injury concern ahead of Manchester derby this Saturday as Diogo Dalot limps off in League Cup win against Charlton... but boss Erik ten Hag insists it's 'not serious'

* Manchester United face an anxious wait to see the extent of Diogo Dalot's injury

* United will have to see if Dalot recovers in time for Saturday's Manchester derby

Manchester United face an anxious wait to see if Diogo Dalot will recover in time for the Manchester derby on Saturday.

The Red Devils beat League One side Charlton 3-0 at Old Trafford on Tuesday night to reach the Carabao Cup semi-finals, but the right-back limped off after half an hour.

After the match, United manager Ten Hag insisted the injury was 'not serious' but knows he will have to wait and see if Dalot can play in the weekend clash with fierce rivals Manchester City.

He said: 'Diogo Dalot went off before half-time. We have to wait, I think it is not serious but it was a precaution to get him off and not take a risk when we have, on Saturday, an important game.

'We have to see how it develops in the coming hours and then we have to make a clear decision.'

Dalot, 23, has generally been first-choice this season when fit, but was named in a much-changed team to face the Addicks as he looked to build up his match fitness after a short spell out with injury.

His deputy Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who replaced him on Tuesday, has stepped in well for the last three games in Dalot's absence, helping United keep three successive clean sheets.

But Dutch boss Ten Hag will likely want the Portuguese back in the starting XI if possible, and he will have been happy to see Dalot walk down the tunnel unaided after being substituted off.

Including the City clash, United face three games in nine days, with a trip to Crystal Palace on January 18 followed by an away game against Premier League leaders Arsenal on January 22.

Erik ten Hag reveals Luke Shaw missed Man United's 3-0 Carabao Cup thrashing of Nottingham Forest because of illness with the left back also a doubt for Saturday's FA Cup tie against Reading

* Luke Shaw was left out of Man United's Carabao Cup squad on Wednesday
* Tyrell Malacia played in his place and Manchester United eased to a 3-0 win

Luke Shaw was absent from Manchester United's 3-0 win at Nottingham Forest Wednesday night in the Carabao Cup because of an illness, Erik ten Hag revealed after the match.

The defender, who's been in fine form since the World Cup, sparked injury concerns when he was left out of the squad for the first-leg of the semi finals without explanation.

Ten Hag said after the match, however, that the player was sick rather than injured, although it remains to be seen if he will be available for Saturday's FA Cup clash with Reading.

'Difficult to say how that develops,' ten Hag said when asked about Shaw's availability after Wednesday's victory. 'We have to wait to see how that develops in hours and days.'

Any further absences from Shaw would likely see Tyrell Malacia retain his spot at left-back, where he performed admirably during the comfortable win at the City Ground.

Luke Shaw could be sidelined for Manchester United's match against Reading on Saturday. Erik ten Hag revealed after the match that Shaw was currently battling an illness

Marcus Rashford opened the scoring in the sixth minute with a cool left-footed finish after a slaloming run through the defence, before Wout Weghorst and Bruno Fernandes added to the tally.

Even against Championship opposition, Shaw missing out this weekend would be a blow for ten Hag and United.

After enduring a tough initial period under the Dutchman, the England international has emerged as a trusted favourite of the new manager, providing attacking impetus at left-back and even parterning Raphael Varane at centre-back on multiple occasions after the World Cup.

He's started 15 of a possible 20 league games for United this season.

Christian Eriksen leaves Old Trafford on crutches after suffering an ankle injury during Manchester United's FA Cup win over Reading - as Erik ten Hag admits the Red Devils won't know the severity of it until at least Monday

* Christian Eriksen will undergo tests to determine the length of his injury
* The Manchester United midfielder left Old Trafford on crutches on Saturday
* Footage has shown Eriksen wearing a protective boot and using a walking aid

Christian Eriksen will undergo a scan to determine the extent of his injury after being seen leaving Old Trafford on crutches following Saturday's FA Cup victory over Reading.

The Danish midfielder is waiting to find out how long he faces on the sidelines with concerning footage shared by a fan on Twitter showing him hobbling out of Manchester United's home ground.

Eriksen can be seen wearing a grey protective boot and using the aid of two crutches as he exits the stadium after being caught by Reading striker Andy Carroll.

United's midfield star could now face a lengthy spell on the periphery of Erik ten Hag's squad having been caught late in a challenge that saw him subbed off and head for immediate treatment.

United's dominant 3-1 fourth round cup win over the Championship side on Saturday evening maintains United's status as the only Premier League side left in four competitions.

Eriksen looks in pain as he tries to recover from Carroll's tackle and is later forced to sub off. Eriksen was forced off through injury in the 57th minute against Reading on Saturday

But, the post-game footage of Eriksen will concern United supporters given the midfielder's impressive performances have been crucial to the team's success this season.

The video has quickly gathered over one million views on Twitter as a stern-looking Eriksen keeps his left foot raised in the air while using crutches to hold himself up as he makes his way to the team coach.

Man United manager Ten Hag confirmed he didn't know how long Eriksen's injury break could be, admitting in Saturday's post-match press conference that a diagnosis couldn't be made until Sunday.

The Dutchman explained: 'It's always difficult to say in this moment so short after the game has finished.

'But it's an ankle [injury]. We have to see what is the diagnosis, so it costs us a minimum of 24 hours before we know that and then I can say more.'

The 30-year-old has gone under the radar as one of the steals of the summer transfer window, making 30 appearances in all competitions for the Reds so far this season and registering two goals and nine assists in the process.

But Eriksen is now a major concern for United's upcoming Carabao Cup second-leg clash with Nottingham Forest, however even more worryingly could miss key fixtures against Crystal Palace, Leeds, Barcelona, and Liverpool in the Premier League.

United lack a natural replacement for the playmaker with Fred and Scott McTominay the most likely of options available to Ten Hag and his backroom staff.

Caroll nih jadi agent Liverpool, biar United pemainnya pada cedera, dapat kartu merah karena 2x kartu kuning, menekel Eriksen dan Casemiro, untung Casemiro gak ikutan cedera. semoga Eriksen gak cedera lama, apalagi jadwal United masih padat dan masih berlaga di 4 kompetisi. semoga Fred bisa menggantikan posisi Eriksen sementara tanpa celah

Manchester United suffer huge injury blow as Christian Eriksen is ruled out for THREE MONTHS with ankle injury... leaving his club fuming at Andy Carroll in a statement over his late tackle

* Christian Eriksen has been a mainstay in the Manchester United team this term
* Danish midfielder suffered an ankle injury in the victory against Reading
* Scans have revealed it is a significant one and he could be out until early May

Manchester United have suffered a huge injury blow, with Christian Eriksen set for at least three months out after suffering an ankle injury from Andy Carroll's reckless lunge on Saturday.

The 30-year-old midfielder suffered the issue after Carroll tackled him from behind in the 3-1 FA Cup win and he was later seen leaving Old Trafford on crutches.

Scan results have confirmed United's fears that the playmaker will face a long lay-off.

United are hugely upset by the incident and released a statement on the club's website. It read: 'Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen is expected to be out of action for an extended period because of an ankle injury sustained in our Emirates FA Cup victory over Reading on Saturday.

'Our Danish midfielder was withdrawn in the second half of the 3-1 win, after being caught by a tackle from Reading striker Andy Carroll, who was later sent off for two bookable offences.'

Christian Eriksen (bottom right) is out for three months with an ankle injury suffered after Andy Carroll (left) lunged in with a clumsy challenge from behind on Saturday. Erik ten Hag and United are disappointed by the foul Andy Carroll committed

The club retain hope that he could play again before the end of the season and his return is likely to come in late April or early May if rehabilitation goes to plan.

It was immediately clear that damage had been done on Saturday in the second half as Eriksen yelled in pain and was later seen departing the ground using crutches and wearing a protective boot.

Ten Hag, speaking about the injury in his press conference on Tuesday, said: 'Of course, he's disappointed, we are disappointed, but it happens in top football and you have to deal with it.

'As you said, on deadline day it's different, you can't make policy on such bad injuries but we have players in the midfield department, good players, we have players who can fill the gap.

Carroll was sent off for two bookable offences including this horrible attempt to get the. Eriksen will be a big miss for United and has been key to their strong form recently. Fred could be the beneficiary with more regular game time in the starting line-up

'I think you can never fill that (gap) because every player has his own characteristics, identification, another player will always fill in in a diff way but it doesn't mean you have to be less successful.

'It's quite clear Eriksen brings top quality to our squad and he has some specifics that are hard to replace, such as his impacts in the final third with his final ball.'

The Dutchman suggested it will be Fred, scorer of the third goal for United on Saturday, who will replace Eriksen in the months ahead.

He added: 'He is playing together with Casemiro in the Brazil squad, one of the best in the world.

‘They (Brazil) have so many choices they can make, but they play together and that tells something about the quality Fred has and what he can contribute to the team.

‘When he came on in the last game he scores a goal. He has a lot of qualities and they're a good combination, Casemiro and Fred.’

Eriksen's spell on the sidelines will be his longest absence since he collapsed on the pitch in June 2021. He was revived and had an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator, allowing him to continue his football career.

He has been key to United this season, providing seven assists in 19 matches, with the club fourth in the league.
