Exclusive - Neville tells United: 'Away goal will be crucial'

Gary Neville has told talkSPORT an away goal against Schalke will help Manchester United end their terrible Champions League record against German opposition and reach next month’s Wembley final.

The Red Devils have won just once against Bundesliga opposition in the competition, against Bayern Munich in the 1999 final, and will face a genuine test to improve that record against the tournament underdogs.

The Germans have been inspired by Spanish legend Raul in their run to the last four, but Neville is confident his former team can end their recent hoodoo.

He said: “The record against German opposition has not been great. We’ve had difficult experiences against Leverkusen, Dortmund and Munich and the players who’ve been around a long time will understand that. They’ll understand the Germans are very efficient and know how to win.”

Neville is expecting a tight affair at the Veltins Arena, but insists it’s vital his former team-mates grab an away goal to take back to Old Trafford for next week’s second leg.

He said: “I’m sure the manager will be saying the same things as he always says. Make sure you defend well, keep possession and most importantly score a goal because you don’t want to go back to Old Trafford having not scored a goal.

“It will be a very different game away than at home. At Old Trafford in front of 76,000 it’s always high tempo, incessant pressure from the first minute to the last and it becomes very difficult for teams to compete against that because they don’t seem to get it in their own leagues.

“Tonight will be more about the counter-attack, getting in amongst their players, stopping them playing and respecting the fact we’re going to someone else’s ground where they’re strong.

“We’ll be more expansive next week but we still have to maintain that threat during the [away] game so the likes of Nani, Giggs, Valencia, Rooney, Hernandaez, whoever is playing, will need to make sure they go and get a goal for us.”
