Gary Neville rues 'a massive missed opportunity' after Man United are knocked out of the FA Cup by Leicester and miss out on a semi-final against Southampton - as 'demoralised' pundit admits he was 'surprised the team was rotated so much'

* Gary Neville was left 'demoralised' after Man United crashed out of the FA Cup
* Leicester breezed past Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's United in the cup quarter final
* Neville feels United missed a great chance to win some silverware this season

Gary Neville has been left 'demoralised' after Manchester United crashed out of the FA Cup against Leicester.

Former Manchester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho continued his hot form in front of goal for the Foxes with a brace as Youri Tielemens scored the pick of the bunch to knock the Red Devils out of the competition at the quarter-final stage.

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer named a very different looking side after returning from Italy where they beat AC Milan in the knockout rounds of the Europa League.

Neville admitted that he was surprised at the number of changes that were made ahead of the tie and feels that Solskjaer missed out on a good chance for a trophy.

'Been a good week, not surprising they go to Milan and do what they did because they are good away from home,' he told the Gary Neville podcast with Sky Sports.

'Beating West Ham last week, and then I'm surprised that the team has been rotated so much.

'I know he has been doing that, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but this was a real chance. You think about the semi final draw that occurred at half time in that game, which meant the winner played Southampton.

'It's not a gimmy against Southampton in the semi final by any stretch of the imagination but what an opportunity. And I do think believe that group of players need to win a trophy under Solskjaer.

Neville admitted that he was surprised at the number of changes that were made ahead of tie. Neville also admitted that the defeat at the King Power has left him feeling 'demoralised'

'Yes, of course, finishing second would be the priority at the start of the season and winning a trophy will now be the priority with that, they only have the Europa League left but that was a real good one today.

'They have a decent record at Leicester and I was in the car listening to the game, get back from behind and think 'here we go' not surprised with United away from home - but then that second and third goes in and it's a massive missed opportunity.'

Neville also admitted that the defeat at the King Power has left him feeling 'demoralised' as United's hunt for silverware with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has taken another backwards step.

'I am demoralised a little bit tonight as a United fan because I do feel that was a really good one to go for this season,' he added.

'And if you want to catch Manchester City, you've got to beat them. Got to beat them in the big game and a big competition.

'Spurs have that chance in a few weeks in a final and if Manchester City are going to be in a final, I know they have Chelsea, then Manchester United have got to be there to stop them.

'You can't rely on other teams to stop them if you are the second best team in the country. If you have a half decent record against City, which United under Solskjaer have, then you've got to be the ones to stop them.

'If you think about in 1999, when Arsenal won the double the year before, we were the only team that could stop them in the semi final and we did stop them, hard work but we did stop them.

'Same in the league, you can't wait for other teams to stop them for you, if you want to catch teams you have to leave one on them and I am disappointed with that tonight.

'I think United fans are disappointed, I have seen the reaction on social media.'

setuju sama Gary, dipertandingan penting (ke semifinal kalo menang), tetapi melakukan beberapa rotasi diposisi 'penting', Bruno, Shaw dan Tominay diistirahatkan. memang sih lawan tanpa Madisson tapi masih ada Albrighton, Tielemans (yg akhirnya ngegol), kalo lawannya 'cuma' Soton/Sheffield masih wajarlah dirotasi, padahal ajang FA ini salah satu yg diharapkan bisa memberikan trophy

Default Re: [FAC] Leicester City 3-1 Manchester United

IAN LADYMAN: Leicester's FA Cup win over Manchester United was a triumph for the collective over the individual... Brendan Rodgers has bought well and coached even better as he holds the key to their future success

* Manchester's United's individuals were no match for Leicester's collective effort
* It is Brendan Rodgers' coaching that is getting Foxes through their injury crisis
* Semi final against Southampton is a huge chance for Rodgers to reach cup final
* Leicester must back their manager's ambition to ensure he stays at the club

When Manchester United made four substitutions with 25 minutes left, Brendan Rodgers looked across at Bruno Fernandes with a smile. United’s cavalry was about to come over the hill and it felt as though it may be time to hang on and hope.

But in the end this was an afternoon when the collective trumped the individual. United’s gathering of disparate internationals – at least that was how they appeared here – were not a match for a Rodgers’ team that continues to grow on the back of clever buying and very good coaching.

This was not easy for Leicester. United are a strange team but they have match winners and can be resilient. An opposing team can never really feel safe.

Even with their superstar substitutions Manchester United were not good enough to win

This was a triumph for the collective over the individual and Brendan Rodgers deserves praise

But it was in the end a more straight forward victory that Rodgers could have hoped for. Leicester had missed a huge chance at 2-1 – Jamie Vardy the culprit of all people – but were the more progressive, more disciplined and more cohesive team throughout.

Rodgers’ squad has struggled with injuries this season but have managed to maintain their place in the top four of the Premier League. Now they are in the semi-final of the FA Cup for the first time since 1982. And this without two of their best attacking players, Harvey Barnes and James Maddison, and the exciting young full-back James Justin.

Good teams, playing under good managers, can survive injury setbacks such as these. Here at the King Power, there was merit to be found in the performances of understudies such as forward Kelechi Iheanacho, who scored twice.

Youri Tielemans was far better in midfield than Fred and Donny van de Beek were for United

Midfielders Wilfred Ndidi and Youri Tielemans were also excellent. Both of those are good enough to get in to a United midfield that looked pedestrian yesterday. Players like the Brazilian Fred – at fault for the first goal – and the mysterious – and not in a good way – Donny van de Beek just looked lost in this game.

Rodgers will relish a semi-final against Southampton. A competitor, the Irishman will smell opportunity. After all his success at Celtic, a chance to contest an FA Cup Final will excite him.

And this Leicester story is all about Rodgers, of course. He is the key to where they are heading. There will be some nervousness around as Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham continue to list. If Mourinho goes, Rodgers will be one of the favourites to replace him in London.

The better news, for Leicester at least, is that Rodgers would take some persuading. It is understood that the 48-year-old has reservations about working for Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy, having assembled an operation at Leicester that he feels he trusts. Rodgers would also be expensive to poach.

Having said that, Leicester will need to look after their manager this summer. If Leicester are to play Champions League football, they will need a deeper squad. Rodgers has been asked to win things and if he is to do so he will need his club to continue to work as ambitiously and shrewdly as they have in recent transfer windows.

This was United’s first domestic defeat on the road since January 2020, a run of 29 games. So it was a surprise but also not a surprise. That says everything about both teams

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admits 'games caught up' with his Manchester United side at Leicester... but boss insists he would NOT have done anything differently after resting star man Bruno Fernandes in lethargic FA Cup quarter-final loss

* Star man Bruno Fernandes, Luke Shaw and striker Edinson Cavani were rested
* The Red Devils faced AC Milan in the Europa League round of 16 on Thursday
* And boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer defended his rotation as Foxes beat them 3-1
* He says all the games and travel finally caught up with his United side

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer blamed tiredness for Manchester United's dismal FA Cup exit at Leicester on Sunday, then warned his players they will have to get used to it.

United were dumped out 3-1 by Leicester, three days after playing in the Europa League in Milan, and their manager said: 'We didn't have the spark and it's understandable.

'The players have been fantastic playing every three days and have been on a great run.

'It caught up with us, all the games and travel. Thursday in Milan was a big night and took a lot out of us and we just didn't have that zip and confidence.

A rotated Manchester United side lost 3-1 to Leicester in the FA Cup quarter-final on Sunday. Star man Bruno Fernandes was left on the bench while United struggled for creativity. But boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insisted he would not do things differently if he had the chance

'But we have to get used to it. If we are to be successful, we have to handle this and hit a higher level. That's what we've been striving towards.'

United were beaten by two goals from former Manchester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho and one from Youri Tielemans.

Chelsea defeated Sheffield United 2-0 on Sunday and will play City in the semis. Leicester face Southampton in the last four and manager Brendan Rodgers said: 'It will be tough but the ambition is there to win the FA Cup.'
