Seagulls. Terminators. Bags of ****. Most footballers choose to let their feet do the talking but Eric Cantona is one of few Premiership legends as elegent in speech as they were on the pitch. His brilliant soundbites only added to the enigma that was the genius Frenchman, capturing the imagination of football fans across the nation with his cryptic and often bizarre statements. With this week marking 20 years since his arrival at Manchester United, what better reason to revisit some of his most amazing quotes?

"When the seagulls follow the trawler, it's because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea. Thank you very much." (1995)
Given community service and a lengthly spell on the sidelines for United after attacking a supporter with that kung-fu kick, Cantona offered up only one response to questions at a press conference in front of the national media, a quote that seventeen years later lives on in infamy.

Living for the day Cantona replaces Arnie at the helm of one of the greatest action series of all time? Most footballers ease into a life of golfing and the odd bit of punditry when they retire. Not Eric, who in 2010 tried to instigate a collapse of France's financial district, urging the nation to withdraw all their money from their bank accounts.

When George Best died in 2005, there were plenty of eulogies given to one of football's most troubled talents, but none as poetic and touching as that of his Manchester United compatriot Cantona.

Manchester United’s kitman, Albert Morgan, mush have more than his fair share of stories to tell about our club and players, having joined the club in 1996.

Albert has reflected on one of our greatest ever players, Eric Cantona, and can sum up the great man in one word.

“Iconic,” he said. “There will never be another and I don’t want there to be because he is a top man. He helped others, and when he was banned he was absolutely fantastic with the young lads at The Cliff. I’d like to meet up with a few of those kids that he coached and talked to just to see what kind of impact he had on their lives.”

Albert clearly thinks a lot of Cantona and recalls a funny occasion when the Frenchman showed up for a fancy do wearing an out of the ordinary outfit.

“We see Eric, when he’s around he goes out of his way to come in and see everybody,” he added. “He’s very human, very humble and he doesn’t like any fuss – Eric’s just Eric. I have one abiding memory of Eric – I can always remember him walking into the dressing room one night and all the lads had their suits on. Eric comes walking in, he had a nice blue suit on with a lovely pair of tan shoes, and these were in the days when you’d only wear black shoes with a suit. With this he had a nice blue three quarter length Crombie overcoat and a pink beret. If I’d worn it they’d have sent me to the madhouse but Eric looked a million dollars and I’ll never forget Steve Bruce sat on the other side of the dressing room reading his programme – he just looked up and went “Ooh aah”. And that sums up Eric for me.”

One of Albert’s friends lived around the corner from Cantona and reported back on what he used to get up to at the local pub.

“Eric was a nice guy and loved a joke but he was a very private man,” he said. “I didn’t see it myself but a friend of mine used to live around the corner from him in Worsley and apparently Eric used to go into one of the local pubs, The Bridgewater, and it was one of these very loud pubs with a booth in the back. Eric was never out lapping up the attention – he used to go out the back and play dominos with the old lads and they loved him. He’d get himself a Coca-Cola and go sit in the back with the old guys. Apparently they worshipped the ground he walked on.”

KOMPAS.com - Striker legendaris Manchester United Eric Cantona mengungkapkan kekagumannya untuk Pelatih Real Madrid Jose Mourinho. Pembesut asal Portugal adalah alasan utama Eric The King, sebutan Cantona, terus mengikuti perkembangan kubu Santiago Bernabeu.

"Barcelona adalah satu dari sedikit tim yang menarik perhatian saya, dan tentu saja Manchester United. Dan kemudian Real Madrid, karena mereka memiliki pelatih seperti Mourinho," sebut Cantona kepada Le Matin, Sabtu (23/3/2013).

"Saya bukan penggemar gaya permainannya (Mourinho), tetapi ia memiliki kepribadian luar biasa. Ia berintelegensia tinggi, karismanya luar biasa, dan caranya spesial saat menata tim. Ia bilang, pelatih butuh menjadi aktor dan saya setuju dengannya," timpalnya lagi.

Mourinho memang fenomenal. Pada musim pertamanya menyetir Madrid, pria berusia 50 tahun itu telah memberikan trofi Copa del Rey dan musim selanjutnya, gelar kampiun Liga BBVA. Kini, Los Blancos dalam trek berikutnya untuk meraih trofi kesepuluh mereka di ajang Liga Champions.

"Tak selalu penting menunjukkan emosi ketika dikelilingi para pemain. Semuanya adalah tentang apa yang perlu dilihat dan didengar oleh pemain," sambung Cantona.

"Apakah itu menguntungkan bagi pelatih ketika masuk ke kamar ganti dalam keadaan frustrasi dan lalu melemparkan tempat minuman? Semuanya tergantung situasi saat itu dan Mourinho paham benar apa yang harus dilakukan menghadapi setiap keadaan," tutur pria kelahiran Marseille, 46 tahun lalu itu.

Menurut Cantona, Mourinho menarik semua perhatian menuju ke arahnya. Bukan karena egonya, tetapi ia ingin mengangkat beban tekanan dari para pemainnya.

"Orang-orang membicarakan Mourinho, di mana ada tim lain berstatus juara dunia. Saya sangat mengagumi apa yang dilakukannya," pungkas Cantona.

Pemain Liverpool lainnya, Neil Ruddock yang tak dimainkan dan memungut kaos itu.”Neil Ruddock mengambil kaos itu dan bertanya ke Barnes, apakah dia boleh menyimpannya sebagai kenang-kenangan.
