Mourinho reveals early team news for Hull

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has revealed he will bring back some of his big guns for the visit of Hull City in the EFL Cup semi-final first leg at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.

The manager will freshen things up again following the 4-0 win over Reading in the FA Cup and confirmed Antonio Valencia, Ander Herrera, Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic are all set to start against the Tigers, with Liverpool or Southampton awaiting the victors in next month's final.

"I play with the players that didn't play today," said Mourinho after Saturday's cup win. "I played with fresh players and I don't want to say anything about first choice or second choice but we played with fresh players, the players who didn't play against West Ham.

"In the next match against Hull City we are going to play again with fresh players. So it's easy to know our team - Zlatan, Pogba, Herrera, Valencia. The guys that didn't play today."

Of course, the boss is aware of the importance of next weekend's Premier League encounter with Liverpool but remains hungry to win every piece of silverware available.

"Hull face a semi-final, also a big occasion for them, and I don't know maybe for them, it's more important the match they have to play three or four days later in the Premier League [against Bournemouth]," he added.

"We play against Liverpool, a big match for us, but we want to be in the final. So we are going to face this Hull match with everything we have, all the power we have, as we know it's two legs but the second leg is away. If we can do something in the first leg that gives us the advantage, so we will try to do that."

Marcos Rojo could be a doubt for Tuesday's tie after being withdrawn due to an injury in the first half of the win over Reading.

Preview: Manchester United v Hull City

How can I follow the game?
Tuesday's EFL Cup semi-final first leg kicks off at 20:00 GMT and will be broadcast live in the UK on Sky Sports. MUTV subscribers can see all the build-up in Match Day Live from 19:00 GMT and then watch Match Day Review at 22:30 GMT. Fans can also follow the action via ManUtd.com's live blog and the club's official Twitter account @ManUtd.

One step from Wembley...
United fans love a trip to the national stadium and we had two to enjoy last term in the FA Cup. The club did not win the League Cup until 1992 but have now lifted the trophy on four occasions, the last time occurring seven years ago. Jose Mourinho makes no bones about the fact he is targeting every piece of silverware available.

How did we get here?
With sections of the press hoping for a third-round upset at Northampton Town in September, after three successive defeats, they were left disappointed by a comfortable 3-1 win for Mourinho's men. Manchester City, then viewed as all-conquering after a flawless start to the season, suffered their first loss, going down 1-0 in the derby at Old Trafford, thanks to Juan Mata's goal. West Ham United may have held out for a draw in the Premier League the previous weekend, but they were beaten 4-1 in the quarter-final.

Any team news?
Well, Jose has already intimated that Antonio Valencia, Paul Pogba, Ander Herrera and Zlatan Ibrahimovic will start. Liverpool are lying in wait in Sunday's big game but the boss has promised to approach this tie with all the power at his disposal. David De Gea could return in goal, even if Sergio Romero continues to impress when deputising - he has conceded only one goal (an Alex Revell penalty in the Northampton tie) in five games this term. Luke Shaw is now fit again but Marcos Rojo is a major doubt and Eric Bailly remains on international duty with Ivory Coast. For the visitors, Michael Dawson was taken off at the weekend and could add to the injury issues at the heart of the defence. Robert Snodgrass remains a vital cog in midfield, despite reports of a rejected bid from West Ham for his services, while there is also speculation Oumar Niasse, who scored against United's Reserves for Everton earlier this season, could soon arrive.

It's been all change at the KCOM Stadium...
Marco Silva has been dubbed 'a new Mourinho' in some quarters and the manager's fellow countryman won his first game in charge, 2-0 against Swansea City in the FA Cup third round, on Saturday. Ex-Red Mike Phelan lost his job at the Tigers helm last week, despite steering the team into the last four of this competition.

How did we fare last time against them?
We left it late but Marcus Rashford came off the bench to touch home Wayne Rooney's cross in stoppage time back in August and spark huge celebrations in the rain with the joyous away fans.

We're going to see a lot of these Tigers, aren't we?
Yes. With the greatest of respect, let's hope the FA Cup fourth-round draw doesn't pit us against each other. If it did, our upcoming fixture list would read - Hull (H), Liverpool (H), Stoke (A), Hull (A), Hull (H or A) and Hull (H)!

Any ex-Reds in the amber and black stripes? James Weir is regularly in the matchday squad but Will Keane and former junior Alex Bruce are out injured.

What is the word from the United camp? "I know Hull City's new manager," said Mourinho. "He's an intelligent guy and will organise his team well, for sure. But we want to be there [in the final]."

Rivals watch... On Wednesday, it's the first leg of the other semi-final as Southampton face Liverpool at St Mary's Stadium. Jurgen Klopp's side are strong favourites with the bookmakers to progress. Marathonbet have a long list of odds on the competition.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is back to kick start Wembley bid as Jose Mourinho calls on his Manchester United big guns

* Hull City and Manchester United meet in Tuesday's EFL Cup semi-final first leg
* Jose Mourinho won the competition three times during two spells with Chelsea
* The United boss will call on his big guns for the crunch first leg at Old Trafford
* He made nine changes for Saturday's FA Cup third-round victory over Reading

Jose Mourinho will pick his strongest Manchester United team to face Hull City in the EFL Cup on Tuesday night, saying a Wembley final still means everything to him.

Jurgen Klopp was among the managers criticised for playing a weakened side in the FA Cup as a young Liverpool side were held at home by Plymouth. But five days before United face Liverpool in the Premier League at Old Trafford, Mourinho will send out his big guns in the first leg of United's EFL Cup semi-final against Hull.

He said: 'Wembley is Wembley, and I want to go there as many times as I can. You are in competitions to win. We play against Liverpool (on Sunday). It's a big match but we want to be in the final. So we are going to face Hull with all the power we have.'

Nine words were all it took for Mourinho to cut through the perennial debate about English clubs demeaning their domestic cup competitions with under-strength teams.

Does the first piece of silverware he won at Chelsea in 2005 hold a special place in his heart?

'This is a competition, not a question of affection,' came the rather cold reply.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is expected to start Manchester United's EFL Cup clash with Hull City

Therein lies Mourinho's simple philosophy. I'm in it to win it. Three times with Chelsea in the case of the EFL Cup and its various guises down the years.

Of course, the United manager himself made nine changes for Saturday's FA Cup third-round victory at home to Reading. But when you can bring in the likes of Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford, it is more a case of rotating than prioritising.

Mourinho wanted to hold back Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba for the Hull game, even though United have a huge Premier League fixture against Liverpool on Sunday. 'I have affection for every match,' added Mourinho. 'If I lose a friendly match I am not happy, so imagine a competition.

'Honestly, for me Wembley is Wembley, and I want to go there as many times as I can. I won it twice in Cardiff but when it moved to Wembley I think the meaning is even better, so why not try?

'I was never good at choosing competitions, so many times at some of my clubs when it came to April and you have a busy fixture list. But you are in competitions to try to win. I always felt the League Cup is not the FA Cup, but it's a cup.'

Sir Alex Ferguson set the pattern by calling on United's kids in this competition. Louis van Gaal tried it and got humiliated by MK Dons. David Moyes took it a little more seriously but lost out to his current club Sunderland in the semi-finals three years ago. It is hard to see Mourinho suffering a similar upset against a team fighting for Premier League survival.

'Probably Hull face the semi-final also as a big occasion for them,' he added.
'I don't know. Maybe for them the match they have to play three days later in the Premier League (against Bournemouth) is more important.

'We play against Liverpool. It's a big match for us, but we want to be in the final. So we are going to face this Hull match with everything we have, with all the power we have.

'We know that it is two legs but the second leg is away. You can win the first leg and do something that gives you an advantage. We are going to try and do that.'

There is a degree of symmetry about Tuesday night's game. In the opposite dug-out to Mourinho is Marco Silva, a highly rated young Portuguese coach starting out in English football following his appointment at Hull last week.
Comparisons between the two men are inevitable.

But as they prepare to face each other three times over the course of the next 23 days, the United manager believes it is not helpful for his 39-year-old counterpart to be labelled Mourinho Mk II.

'I don't think it is good for Marco to be compared with me,' he said. 'I don't think it's fair but I can see a similar start of career because he was in a small club, Estoril, before he moved to Sporting Lisbon. I was in a small club, Uniao de Leiria, before I moved to Porto, so we had a similar start in Portugal.

'Now he comes to the big one, it's a big opportunity for him. You know it's not easy to come to the Premier League when you are a foreign coach.

'I spoke with him and he knows that he's going to face a difficult challenge. I really wish him well but not a good start — he has to lose three matches.'

Silva got off to a winning start at home to Swansea in the FA Cup on Saturday, but Hull finished the game with midfielders Tom Huddlestone and Jake Livermore in central defence after Michael Dawson was forced off with a shoulder injury.

With Dawson and Harry Maguire rated doubtful, and Curtis Davies and Alex Bruce missing through injury, Silva acknowledged that it is a problem he could do without ahead of Hull's first appearance in the semi-final of this competition.

'It is not normal at the level where we are,' he said. 'But for all these things, for the situation we have in the table, it is very important to give confidence for the people and change the atmosphere here.'

Hull City in defensive crisis ahead of EFL Cup semi-final against Manchester United as boss Marco Silva says number of injuries is 'not normal'

* Hull City have four injured centre-backs ahead of their first EFL Cup semi final
* Tom Huddlestone is likely to fill in alongside fellow midfielder Jake Livermore
* Captain Michael Dawson was forced off against Swansea with a shoulder injury

Hull's uphill battle at Manchester United has been made all the more difficult by the defensive crisis facing newly-appointed boss Marco Silva ahead of Tuesday's EFL Cup semi-final.

Less than a week after being announced as the surprise successor to Mike Phelan, the 39-year-old is preparing to take the Premier League's bottom side to a team on an eight-match winning streak.

As if facing Jose Mourinho's side was not enough, Silva approaches Hull's first-ever semi-final appearance in the competition with an eye-watering list of defensive issues.

Hull have four injured centre-backs meaning Tom Huddlestone is likely to fill in there

Captain Michael Dawson was forced off against Swansea City with a shoulder injury

The Portuguese may have got his reign off to a winning start against Swansea, but Saturday's FA Cup third-round tie laid bare their squad deficiencies as Tom Huddlestone and Jake Livermore ended the 2-0 victory in central defence.

'We finished this game with our backline having a midfielder as a right-back, two midfielders like centre-backs,' Silva said, who deployed David Meyler as a makeshift full-back.

'It is not normal at the level where we are. For all these things, for the situation we have in the table, it is very important to give confidence for the people, change the atmosphere here and I think it is important for us.'

Michael Dawson was forced off against Swansea with a shoulder injury that needs assessing, while Harry Maguire is another doubt for a match that fellow centre-backs Curtis Davies and Alex Bruce will miss through injury.

Ahmed Elmohamady's departure for the African Nations Cup and Moses Odubajo's serious knee injury means Meyler may again be deployed at right-back, although on the other flank Josh Tymon and Andrew Robertson are both available.

Quote:
HULL'S INJURY WOES

The following players will miss Hull City's EFL Cup semi-final against Manchester United due to injury or are doubtful for the game:

Moses Odubajo, Will Keane, Michael Dawson, Harry Maguire, Curtis Davies, Alex Bruce

Dieumerci Mbokani and Ahmed Elmohamady are also unavailable as they are at the Africa Cup of Nations
The latter was one of few to have heard of Silva before his shock appointment at the KCOM Stadium thanks to former Dundee United team-mate Ryan Gauld.

Attacking midfielder Gauld played under the new City boss at Sporting Lisbon and spoke positively about a manager who has made a good early impact on Robertson.

The Scotland left-back said: 'Since the day he came in, it has been a little bit hectic because he came in Thursday and we had the game Saturday.

'He was obviously trying to get his ideas across, we knew he couldn't get them all across by the time Saturday came. We were all realistic.

'He just said to go into it with an open mind and if we do that he can improve it and all the players believe that.

'It's never nice when people lose their jobs, especially the good people who did, unfortunately, but that's the way of the football world. We all know that.

'I suppose we never really had that change under Mick. He kept most of the staff the same - now there is completely new people.

'It is the first time I have ever worked under a foreign manager so it is a wee bit different, but all the players are buying into it.

'All his ideas are coming across well and hopefully we can show that in the coming games.'
