Chris Smalling is mistaken for US President Barack Obama on World Cup 2014 mug

* Souvenir stuff-up with Obama photo captioned as defender Chris Smalling
* Shows Obama wearing the England footy top in head and shoulders photo
* Company junior employee now facing demotion after costly blunder

A hilarious blunder at a company producing World Cup merchandise has seen Barack Obama mistaken for England defender Chris Smalling on a set of World Cup mugs.

The U.S. President is pictured wearing the England football top after a junior member of staff was tasked with finding royalty free images of the Three Lions squad.

The head and shoulders photo printed on the mugs show Obama wearing the kit, with the caption 'Chris Smalling World Cup squad Brazil 2014' beneath it.

Can the real Chris Smalling please stand up?: U.S. President Barack Obama cuts a striking figure in his England top, left, but poses little actual similarity to England and Manchester United defender Chris Smalling, right

Barack Obama, pictured bottom left, features as an England left-back according to the set of coffee mugs

Roy Hodgson's England side crashed out of the Brazil World Cup in the group stages after losing their first two matches by a scoreline to 2-1 to both Italy and Uruguay.

It is the Three Lions' earliest World Cup exit since 1958 and, perhaps most humiliatingly, they still have to play Costa Rica in a dead rubber match on Tuesday.

The merchandise company which made the error has now hastily turned to Dorset-based expert clearance resellers Wholesale Clearance UK to try and shift the stock that could have easily appeared in an Only Fools and Horses episode.

Wholesale Clearance managing director Karl Baxter said the company contacted him with the hope of off-loading the stock.

Mr Baxter said he believed a junior member of staff at the Dorset company responsible could be facing demotion after being trusted with the task of sourcing royalty free pictures of each England player to use on the mugs.

He said: 'They passed this onto to their young, bright eyed and bushy tailed new apprentice.

'The designs were proofed and signed off by their boss, who had clearly had a heavy night with the lads playing poker and before he'd had his first vat of coffee the following morning.

'They immediately contacted us and 2,000 of the England items were dispatched to our warehouse. We eagerly unpacked them and, indeed it turned out that the Chris Smalling cup had Barack Obama's head on instead of Chris'.'

Germany boss Joachim Low says England won't progress while there are too many foreign players in the Premier League

* England were knocked out of World Cup early after two defeats to Italy and Uruguay
* Germany face France in quarter-final in the Maracana on Friday

Joachim Low has said that the Premier League has too many foreigners for England to succeed as national team.

Germany have qualified for every World Cup quarter final since 1938 and Loew said that the collaboration between the Bundesliga and German FA was crucial to the success of the national team.

Speaking ahead of Germany’s World Cup quarter-final against France on Friday, the Germany manager said: ‘If England has a problem, it is that their league has a disadvantage because higher percentage of foreigners, so it becomes difficult for national coach to get things moving.

Shamed: England were knocked out of the World Cup early on after two defeats to Italy and Uruguay

'We have changed over recent years because lots of young German players in German clubs are given an advantage over foreigners and we’re benefitting from that. In England many foreigners and perhaps that is not always beneficial.

‘I believe we have a good blend in Germany, a strong league with two or three of best teams in Europe. But I’m not unhappy if players are abroad. We can benefit from Sami Khedira and Mesut Ozil having different influences and cultures and coaches. They benefit personally as well and it helps players to mature.’

Loew expects Mats Hummels to have recovered from the flu and is hoping to field a full- strength side despite a mini-epidemic among their squad. ‘About a third of our team were complaining about sore throats,’ said Loew. ‘We were contaminated and we need to see how that develops. Hummels had a fever but all players are able to train. They’re still slightly suffering but there’s no feeling of exhaustion. I hope they stay stable and there is no worsening overnight.’

Loew is expected to play Philipp Lahm in midfield despite calls to switch him to right back with Andre Schurrle and Mario Goetze battling for the final place in the starting eleven.

Wayne Rooney favourite to be next England captain with Joe Hart and Gary Cahill also in contention

* Steven Gerrard has retired from international football
* Gerrard had been captaining England since 2010
* Wayne Rooney favourite to be next England captain
* Gary Cahill and Joe Hart both in contention for captaincy

Bookmakers have already installed Wayne Rooney as favourite to be England’s next captain in the wake of Steven Gerrard’s international retirement. As if they had much choice.

It’s not through Rooney being the stand-out candidate, rather he is the best of an average bunch - as was painfully obvious with the dismal elimination from the World Cup after just two group games.

Rooney at least has the benefit of previous, short-lived captaincy experience for his country and has been Manchester United’s on-off skipper in recent years.

Obvious choice: Rooney (right) is the bookies' favourite to replace Gerrard (left) as England captain

He may also be in the running to secure the armband full-time now that Rio Ferdinand has left Old Trafford.

That would certainly improve the 28-year-old scouser’s cause in the eyes of England boss Roy Hodgson. If it’s good enough for Louis van Gaal, then it should be good enough for Hodgson.

On the international front, Rooney has played almost 100 games for his country and that sort of experience is invaluable, even if it is the experience of never winning anything.

When he made his senior international debut at the age of just 17 in February 2003, he was England’s youngest international cap. That’s an enviable record, although since eclipsed by Theo Walcott.

Rooney has matured on and off the field since those early days wearing the Three Lions and, as an established figure for club and country, now commands respect among his peers.

But his performance in England’s World Cup defeat by Italy, when cast out in an unfamiliar wide position, may have blotted his copybook in the eyes of the manager. A captain is expected to lead from the front, even when it does not suit, not sulk on the fringes.

If not Rooney, then who? Chelsea defender Gary Cahill is another early front-runner to carry the armband as Hodgson’s side look to banish the bitter memory of their dire campaign in Brazil.

Hodgson wants to rebuild with youth ahead of Euro 2016 and Cahill, like Rooney, is at just the right time in his career for the responsibility.

Hodgson, as a traditionalist, may prefer a defender to be barking orders as captain from the back rather than relying on a striker to get the message through on the field. Forwards can be detached from the action further back and that will form part of Hodgson’s thinking.

While the late, great Bobby Moore is perhaps England’s most well-known and well-loved skipper, there have been strikers who have worn the armband in the post-war years. Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker share the distinction.

If Hodgson does not fancy a striker, he may fancy a goalkeeper even less. Joe Hart is another who tops the list of early favourites, but Ray Clemence or Peter Shilton he is not.

The Manchester City stopper was backed for the England captaincy by fans and pundits alike as far back as 2012, with many favouring a string of emphatic performances. But his form last season dipped and that leaves a question mark over his club future.

City boss Manuel Pellegrini sees £6million summer signing Willy Caballero as providing real competition for Hart next season and it would be a brave England manager who has as his captain a player not even guaranteed first-team football at club level.

Beyond the obvious front-runners, the strength of the England candidates tail off dramatically directly proportional to their number of caps.

Everton duo Leighton Baines and Phil Jagielka have been thrown into the hat, for no other obvious reason, it appears, than they have played for their country.

Daniel Sturridge has yet to prove his maturity and consistency beyond a good season with Liverpool last time around.

And Jack Wilshere’s slender chances would appear to have gone up in smoke with that picture of him partying in Las Vegas so soon after England’s elimination from Brazil. Hart was also in that picture, which may perhaps have done his hopes even more harm than the fact he may not be playing for City next term.

Banyaknya pemain asing di EPL krn harga mereka yg murah tapi berkualitas, sedangkan pemain-pemain Inggris sangat mahal (lihat aja Andy Carroll sama Luke Shaw).
