Injury update ahead of West Brom v United

Jose Mourinho has confirmed Eric Bailly will miss Manchester United's Premier League match against West Bromwich Albion, but Chris Smalling is set to return at The Hawthorns.

Bailly suffered a knee injury during Wednesday's 2-1 win over Crystal Palace, though thankfully the boss expects his Ivory Coast international to return at some point over the busy Christmas period.

Smalling has not featured for the Reds since the game at Chelsea on 23 October and the centre-back hopes to be involved against the Baggies on Saturday, when kick-off is scheduled for 17:30 GMT.

Speaking to MUTV at the Aon Training Complex on Friday afternoon, Mourinho began his update by discussing Bailly's availability. "He can’t be in this game but it doesn’t look as serious as we first thought," he said.

"Normally we hope to have him back for Christmas period. Smalling is coming back for this game."

In the pre-match press conference, Mourinho also confirmed that left-back Luke Shaw will definitely miss this weekend's clash with the Baggies, as well as Henrikh Mkhitaryan after the Armenian suffered an ankle injury after scoring his first Old Trafford goal against Tottenham Hotspur last Sunday.

During the media briefing, the manager was also asked if it is impossible to leave 35-year-old Zlatan Ibrahimovic out of the team after scoring eight goals in as many matches, despite his advancing years.

“It is, it is," Mourinho told reporters. "But tomorrow is a last effort, and then they will have a week without football and that week is a week that my players need, especially a guy like him.

"He’s a striker and sometimes, in other positions, you can hide yourself a little bit more and protect yourself with experience and position. As a striker, I think it’s one of the impossible positions where you can hide. He’s doing phenomenal, and tomorrow he’s going to play again, and then one week to rest.”
