Manchester - Manchester United menggasak Stoke City 4-0 di laga terakir musim ini. Tapi itu tak cukup mengantarkan 'Setan Merah' ke tahta juara. MU harus puas menuntaskan musim ini di posisi dua.

Bertanding dengan tuntutan menang agar setidaknya bisa memelihara persaingan dengan Chelsea, Minggu (9/5/2010), MU unggul duluan lewat Darren Fletcher dan kemudian disusul gol Ryan Giggs beberapa menit berselang.

MU yang tampil dominan di Old Trafford kemudian menambah gol lagi pada babak kedua, kali ini lewat gol bunuh diri Danny Higginbotham. Park Ji Sung kemudian menggenapkan skor jadi 4-0.

Meski begitu, tiga poin tambahan ini tak berarti apa-apa karena Chelsea tidak terpeleset saat menjamu Wigan dan pesta gol 8-0. Alhasil, Chelsea jadi juara Liga Primer sementara MU hanya ada di posisi dua dengan selisih satu poin.

Jalannya Pertandingan

Wayne Rooney melepas umpan ke arah Dimitar Berbatov pada menit enam. Dari sudut sempit Berbatov melepaskan tembakan yang mengenai bek lawan dan meluncur ke luar lapangan.

Pada menit 11, serangan dibangun MU dari sisi kiri. Nani menggiring bola dan kemudian mengirim umpan silang ke muka gawang. Berbatov ada di tiang jauh dan tak terkawal kendati tandukannya masih mengudara dari sasaran.

Enam menit kemudian, Patrick Evra berpacu masuk ke kotak penalti Stoke dan kemudian menerima umpan Paul Scholes. Tapi Danny Higginbotham berhasil menghadang sepakannya.

Pada menit 22 lagi-lagi Berbatov dapat peluang. Dari umpan silang Nani, Berbatov meneruskan dengan tandukan yang hanya menghantam mistar dan memantul ke luar lapangan.

MU akhirnya unggul pada menit 31. Dari tendangan penjuru sundulan Nemanja Vidic masih bisa dihadan pemain lawan, tapi bola kemudian dikuasai Darren Fletcher yang bisa menceploskan bola.

Enam menit kemudian Ryan Giggs membuat skor menjadi 2-0 setelah sepakannya di dalam kotak penalti usai menerima umpan Berbatov tak kuasa ditahan Asmir Begovic. Namun, di saat yang sama Chelsea juga telah unggul dengan skor yang sama.

Skor kembali berubah pada menit 54 setelah tendangan Rooney dari sisi kanan gawang yang dimaksudkan sebagai umpan malah disambar Danny Higginbotham untuk masuk ke dalam gawangnya sendiri.

Rory Delap mengancam pada menit 74 dan tandukannya memaksa Edwin van der sar berjibaku menyelamatkan gawang. Tiga menit kemudian, si kiper Belanda juga dipaksa terbang untuk mencegah bola masuk ke dalam gawang.

Park membuat MU memperbesar keungulan jadi 4-0 di menit ke-84 usai tandukannya menyambut tendangan penjuru tak bisa ditahan pemain lawan. Tapi sekali lagi, skor 8-0 yang sementara ini dicatatkan Chelsea sudah membuat kans MU jadi juara pupus.

ALEX FERGUSON has played down fears about Wayne Rooney's fitness ahead of the World Cup.

The Manchester United striker limped out of the action 13 minutes from the end of the 4-0 win over Stoke.

It sparked immediate fears about his health ahead of Fabio Capello's provisional squad being announced on Tuesday.

But United boss Ferguson stressed he was not too concerned about the 24-year-old.

The Scot said: "He has aggravated his groin again. I don't think it is serious. I think he will be OK for England."

Sir Alex Ferguson was gracious but defiant after seeing his hopes of a fourth consecutive title crushed by Carlo Ancelotti's free-scoring Chelsea side.

United's title rivals beat Wigan Athletic 8-0 home, to render academic the Reds' own emphatic victory, 4-0 over Stoke City on the Old Trafford turf.

"I didn't know what the Chelsea score was [during the second half] to be honest. But at half-time I accepted the fact they were going to be champions," Sir Alex told MUTV.

Gary Caldwell's red card and Frank Lampard's subsequent penalty conversion to put Chelsea 2-0 up after 32 minutes meant the rest of the afternoon's activity in West London and Manchester was largely a formality.

"We felt it would be difficult for Wigan to get something at Stamford Bridge and when we heard they were down to ten men, all our hopes evaporated then," admitted Sir Alex.

"We applaud Chelsea in winning the title. We know hard it is to win it - it's the hardest league in the world and we've won it for the last three years. I congratulate Carlo Ancelotti on a wonderful achievement. He's a good manager and a good guy."

Sir Alex will swiftly turn his thoughts to challenging Chelsea for the 2010/11 championship.

"We won the last three titles before this one. That was fantastic and the players have been great. We'll come back next year, that's exactly what Manchester United do."

Earlier, the manager went on the pitch for the traditional end-of-season speech to the Old Trafford crowd.

"The players and the supporters have always been magnificent and you've been magnificent again," he said.

"I think we can be proud that we've challenged hard for a fourth title in a row. Next season we'll go again and bring back the title to the best place in the world."
