Victor Lindelof is ruled out of Manchester United's Champions League clash at Atalanta... with centre-back picking up a knock in training ahead of crucial match

* Victor Lindelof played as part of a back three in the win against Tottenham
* But he will not be available against Atalanta after picking up a knock in training
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could therefore be tempted into changing his formation
* Paul Pogba, Amad Diallo and Anthony Martial however are all on the plane

Manchester United have suffered another defensive injury this season after Victor Lindelof was ruled out of their crucial Champions League clash against Atalanta on Tuesday.

The club confirmed the Sweden international - who was part of the back three that started the 3-0 win at Tottenham on Saturday - has not travelled to Italy after picking up a knock in training on Monday.

It comes as a blow to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but has not resulted in the fully-fledged crisis United would have faced had he suffered the injury while Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane - his centre-back partners at the weekend - were still out.

Victor Lindelof has been ruled out of Manchester United's European clash at Atalanta. The Swede started as part of United's back three in their win against Tottenham on Saturday. He had also played the full 90 minutes in all of United's Champions League games this term

But the injury to the 27-year-old Swede - who has played the full 90 minutes in all three of United's European fixtures so far this term - could force Solskjaer to change his system at the back once more, though Eric Bailly is a like-for-like replacement.

Meanwhile, Paul Pogba will be available to Solskjaer as his three-match ban following his dismissal in the 5-0 hammering by Liverpool only applies to domestic competitions.

Amad Diallo is also on the plane for the match against his former club while fellow forward Anthony Martial is also in the 25-man squad.

United lifted slightly lifted the pressure on under-fire boss Solskjaer at the weekend with their victory in north London, and will now look to take another step towards qualification for the last 16 of the Champions League in Bergamo.

It is a blow for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (R), but not the full-blown crisis it would have been had Raphael Varane (R) also still been injured

But Solskjaer warned his Manchester United players that 'one swallow doesn't make a summer' as they try to build on the morale-boosting win over Tottenham.

'The next one is the one that matters and we've been looking and working to get consistency,' he said.

'We know that when we get that consistency, we well get results and performances.

'As I said, one swallow doesn't make a summer and it's important we keep focusing on what we did well in that game and improve on what we didn't do as well.

Paul Pogba has made the trip to Bergamo with his three-match ban only applying domestically

'It's relentless with games every three games, and it's a chance tomorrow to prove that we can go again.'

The Norwegian's side currently sit top of Group F, and have endured a topsy-turvy ride so far on the continent this term.

Their only away trip in Europe in 2021-22 ended in a shock defeat at Young Boys, before Cristiano Ronaldo-inspired comebacks saw them come from behind to beat both Villarreal and Atalanta.

Manchester United are dealt ANOTHER injury blow as Raphael Varane is forced off against Atalanta with hamstring issue that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admits 'doesn't look good'

* Raphael Varane was forced off injured during Man United's clash with Atalanta
* The French defender limped off the pitch after just 38 minutes of action in Italy
* As a result, Mason Greenwood was brought as a replacement by the United boss
* The news will come as a blow to Man United - who had just seen Varane return

Manchester United suffered another injury blow after Raphael Varane was forced off with a hamstring injury during their Champions League clash with Atalanta on Tuesday night.

The French defender went down in the 38th minute of the 2-2 draw and received medical attention on the pitch. He initially claimed he could continue on, but later signalled to the bench to be substituted.

After the game, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted the problem 'didn't look good'.

He said: 'He felt his hamstring. We have to look at him tomorrow but he felt his hamstring as he ran there tightening up.

'He didn't want to risk anything so first assessment doesn't look good but we'll assess him again tomorrow and fingers crossed.'

As a result, Mason Greenwood was brought on and Manchester United reverted to a back four formation against the Serie A side.

The news will come as a substantial blow for Manchester United - who had just seen Varane return to their squad after recovering from a quad injury.

Varane sustained the injury while away on international duty with France last month and missed out on five of United's Premier League fixtures as a result.

One of the game he missed included Manchester United's embarrassing 5-0 defeat to Liverpool.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will now face a headache head of Saturday's home clash with Manchester City at Old Trafford as both Varane and Victor Lindelof could be ruled out

Varane picked up the injury by lengthening his stride to cut out a low cross from Gavi during France's game against Spain.

It seemed innocuous but the United centre-half signalled towards the bench immediately as he sat on the floor asking for treatment.

The injury came as a substantial blow for Manchester United - considering they paid £40million to attain his services from Real Madrid over summer.

As a result, Varane has made just made just nine appearance for Manchester United so far this season.

Nevertheless, Varane did return to action for United against Tottenham on the weekend and started their Champions League fixture against Atalanta.

The return of Varane was vital for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer considering Victor Lindelof was ruled out injured after picking up as knock in training. Solskjaer was also forced to start Eric Bailly in defence on Tuesday night.

The United manager will now face a headache head of Saturday's home clash with Manchester City at Old Trafford.

Raphael Varane will be out for a MONTH with hamstring injury sustained against Atalanta as Manchester United suffer huge blow ahead of Saturday's derby

* Raphael Varane was forced off injured during Man United's clash with Atalanta
* The French defender limped off the pitch after just 38 minutes of action in Italy
* As a result, Mason Greenwood was brought on as a replacement by United
* The influential Varane will now miss a month of action with his hamstring issue

Raphael Varane will miss the Manchester derby at Old Trafford this weekend after it was confirmed that he will be out of action for a month.

Varane suffered a hamstring injury in Manchester United's draw with Atalanta in the Champions League on Tuesday in only his second game back after recovering from a groin problem.

The former Real Madrid defender had scans on Wednesday and will now miss Saturday's derby clash with Manchester City as well as the games against Watford, Villarreal, Chelsea and Arsenal after the international break.

That is a major blow for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer considering United leaked 11 goals in three games during Varane's recent absence.

Solskjaer could also be without Victor Lindelof against City after he missed the Atalanta game through injury, depriving United of two of the back three that kept a clean sheet at Tottenham last weekend.

The United boss may have to change the 3-4-1-2 formation he lined up with against Spurs and Atalanta, although Luke Shaw could be used as a centre back alongside Harry Maguire and Eric Bailly.

Shaw responded to United staying top of the group with a late equaliser in Bergamo by reminding his team-mates that they were in a similar position last season but dropped into the Europa League after losing their last two games to Paris Saint-Germain and RB Leipzig.

'We obviously learned from last year. We need to really, we don't want to be in that situation again,' said Shaw.

'We need to take charge. We can't relax just because we beat Spurs 3-0 and got an okay point in Italy, we need to keep improving.'

Meanwhile, United winger Tahith Chong's loan spell at Birmingham has been cut short after he underwent surgery on a thigh tendon problem that will keep him out for up to five months.

Tahith Chong returns to Manchester United after suffering a groin injury on loan at Birmingham City with the winger expected to miss four to five months after undergoing surgery

* Tahith Chong suffered a groin injury during a Birmingham City training session
* The Manchester United youngster had impressed on loan at Birmingham
* Chong returns to United after undergoing a surgery following his injury

Tahith Chong has been sent back to Manchester United after suffering a groin injury on loan at Birmingham City.

The 21-year-old has been getting regular football at the Championship side, earning himself plenty of plaudits for his performances.

But both clubs have confirmed the loan spell has come to an end after he suffered the injury during a training session.

Birmingham manager Lee Bowyer claimed that the 21-year-old went down during a session with no-one near him.

Tahith Chong's loan spell at Birmingham City has come to an end following a groin injury. Chong had been earning plaudits for some impressive displays for the Championship side. Chong will return to Manchester United after undergoing surgery following his injury. Birmingham City boss Lee Bowyer has described Chong's departure as a 'massive loss'

United confirmed on their official website: 'Tahith has undergone surgery to repair a ruptured thigh tendon, the operation went well, and he will return to Manchester United to complete an expected four to five month rehabilitation.'

During the 2020/21 season, Chong spent the first half of the season on loan at Werder Bremen in a deal which was cut short, before he joined Club Brugge for the second part of the campaign.

He was loaned out again to Bowyer's side on a season-long loan deal in which he made 13 appearances and provided three assists.

The former Leeds and Newcastle player has admitted that it is a massive loss for the side who are 13th in the Championship.

Bowyer told the club's official website: 'Unfortunately, he had to have an operation today, 16 weeks he's now out for.

'Something so small as well, the way it happened. Standing on the side of the pitch, a five-yard pass into the pitch. No-one near him, no challenges or anything and he has damaged his groin area.

'It's a massive loss, everyone knows what he has been like since he has been here. He has been a massive player for us.

'So it's tough to take but the most important thing now for Tahith is he gets his rehab right, which he will do. He will go back to Manchester United now and they will look after him.

'He has been great here, we are definitely going to miss him.'

Paul Pogba suffers a thigh injury during France training as Man United midfielder hobbles off during shooting drill in a big scare to Didier Deschamps ahead of their World Cup qualifiers

* Paul Pogba hobbled off the pitch with a thigh injury during France training
* Pogba yelled out a groan during a shooting drill at their Clairefontaine base
* France face Kazakhstan on Saturday and then Finland on November 16

Paul Pogba could face a prolonged spell on the sidelines after suffering an apparent thigh injury, while on international duty.

The midfielder has missed Manchester United's last two Premier League matches due to suspension and may now miss France's upcoming World Cup qualifiers due to a muscular problem.

Pogba pulled up during a one-on-one shooting drill with the national side at their Clairefontaine training base on Monday.

Paul Pogba suffered a thigh problem during France training on Monday - in a big injury concern

He suffered the injury during an one-on-one shooting drill at their Clairefontaine training base. However, as soon as he took the shot, Pogba immediately pulled up lame with a muscle issue

Teed up for a shot on the edge of the area by France manager Didier Deschamps, the 28-year-old yelled out with pain as he struck the ball.

He immediately limped and held his right left - indicating to Deschamps that the issue was around the thigh area.

To minimalise the threat of any further injury, a hobbling Pogba was taken off the pitch as he was accompanied by a member of staff to a car before being driven away.

The injury will come of frustration to Deschamps as it was only Pogba and Bayern Munich right back Benjamin Pavard in training, with the rest of the squad given the day off after playing at the weekend.

France manager Didier Deschamps went over to check on the stricken midfielder. Pogba was unable to continue the session and had to be assisted off the pitch by a coach. He was one of only two France players to train on Monday - having not played for Man United

Les Bleus have two World Cup qualifiers in the current international break with a home clash against Kazakhstan on Saturday and then a trip to Finland on November 16.

Four days later, under-performing United head to Watford in the Premier League - although Pogba will serve the final of this three-match domestic ban.

After that, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's stuttering side head to Villarreal in the Champions League on November 23.

Edinson Cavani confirms he has a tendon injury which kept him out of Manchester United's woeful defeat by Man City... and reveals it's the same issue that saw him miss the start of the season

* Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani has confirmed he has a tendon injury
* The injury saw him miss United's woeful defeat by rivals Man City on Saturday
* Cavani has revealed that it's similar to the issues he had at the start of the season
* The 34-year-old is expected to return to action after the international break

Edinson Cavani has suffered another setback after he confirmed he is getting treatment for a tendon injury.

The 34-year-old has been plagued by injuries since joining United and even missed the first few weeks of the club's start to the season with a similar injury.

Cavani most recently starred in United's solid 3-0 win over Tottenham last month before going to make a substitute appearance against Atalanta in the Champions League but was forced to miss their most recent outing – a woeful 2-0 defeat at the hands of local rivals Manchester City.

United supporters questioned where Cavani was in the build-up to Saturday's defeat by City and now the man himself has confirmed that he has picked up another injury.

Speaking to local newspaper El Observador back in his homeland of Uruguay, Cavani revealed: 'The issue was like this. Before starting the season, I had discomfort in the tendon.

'It made me spend a couple of weeks out until I began to gain some minutes [on the pitch] in my team. I had to go back to the national team, always with a bit of pain, but with the hope that it would disappear.

'It was improving but, after Tottenham, it started coming back.

Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani confirms he has a tendon injury in another setback. Cavani revealed that it's similar to the issues that kept him out at the start of the season. The Uruguayan forward is expected to return after the international break

'They are difficult injuries,' he admitted. 'And I decided to have the treatment so that it does not continue to get worse, and to recover as soon as possible to be fit for my team and the national team.'

It's more bad news for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who learned that Paul Pogba could be out of action for the rest of the year after sustaining a thigh injury on international duty with France.

Sportsmail understands the Manchester United midfielder will be out for between six and eight weeks, delivering another hammer blow to under-pressure Norwegian.

Pogba still has one game of a three-match domestic suspension to serve following his red card against Liverpool last month, so he would have been unavailable for the trip to Watford after the international break anyway.

But the 28-year-old could miss a further 11 games if the injury keeps him sidelined through a busy Christmas fixture programme and into the New Year.

Pogba damaged a muscle in his right thigh attempting a shot in training on Monday night and was forced to withdraw from the squad for France's World Cup qualifiers against Kazakhstan and Finland.

A statement from the French Football Federation said: 'Paul Pogba has suffered an injury to the quadriceps of the right thigh and is forced to miss the next two matches. To replace him, Didier Deschamps called on Jordan Veretout.'

United later confirmed: 'Paul Pogba has been released from the French national team following a thigh muscle injury sustained in training. He will return to Manchester for treatment and further evaluation.'

Pogba and Cavani join Raphael Varane on United's injury list, with the former Real Madrid man out for up to five weeks with the hamstring injury he suffered in last week's Champions League draw with Atalanta in Italy.

The United boss is under intense pressure following a run of six defeats in 12 games and desperately needs his best players fit as he battles to save his job.

Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof says he is aiming to be 'back with the guys soon' as the Swede offers a positive health update after his worrying heart episode against Norwich and positive Covid test

* Victor Lindelof has not played for Manchester United since December 11
* He shared an update on his Instagram story and hopes to be back soon
* Defender is currently self isolating having tested positive for coronavirus

Manchester United centre-back Victor Lindelof has provided an update on his health and revealed he hopes to be 'back with the guys' soon.

The Swedish international has not played for the Red Devils since the 1-0 win at Norwich on December 11, a match where he had to be replaced in the second half due to breathing difficulties.

A subsequent Covid-19 outbreak at Old Trafford saw United have an enforced 16-day break before they returned to Premier League action with a 1-1 draw at Newcastle on Monday, but Lindelof was absent from the squad.

Interim boss Ralf Rangnick confirmed the defender had tested positive for coronavirus but the 27-year-old is in good spirits despite currently self-isolating at his home.

Victor Lindelof thanked fans for their well wishes and he remains in isolation

Lindelof, in an update on his Instagram story on Wednesday, said: 'Hi everyone, I just wanted to check in real quick and first of all say thank you for all your messages in these past couple of weeks and obviously the past couple of days as well.

'I've seen it so I just wanted to say that I really appreciate it, so thank you so much for that.

Lindelof has not been in action since December 11 and had an 'episode' during the match. Lindelof had a worrying incident with his breathing against Norwich earlier this month

'At the moment, I'm just home. I feel fine so hopefully I can be back with the guys soon.'

Lindelof was given a heart monitor after his substitution at Carrow Road but United confirmed he had 'recovered well from the episode' during a statement on Monday which revealed the centre-back had now contracted Covid-19.

He will remain unavailable for Thursday's home fixture with Burnley.

Paul Pogba is closing in on a long-awaited return in a major boost to Man United's top four battle, with Ralf Rangnick to make a late decision on whether superstar midfielder will play against Middlesbrough

* Ralf Rangnick and his staff will decide if the star plays against Middlesbrough

Paul Pogba is closing in on his long-awaited return to action to provide Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick with a key fitness boost.

United staff will make a late decision on whether Pogba is available to be selected for Friday night’s FA Cup tie against Middlesbrough as they take a cautious approach to his return from a long term thigh injury.

But it is understood that Pogba is now very close to being ruled fit enough to make his return to first team action.

If Pogba is not risked against Boro, he could come back into contention for next week’s Premier League fixtures against Burnley or Southampton.

Paul Pogba is closing in on his long-awaited return at Manchester United after his thigh injury. Interim boss Ralf Rangnick will decide if Pogba is fit enough to play against Middlesbrough. Pogba's comeback will hand United a major boost in their bid to finish inside the top four

Either way, the imminent return of Pogba will come as significant boost to United, who have been without their France midfielder since November.

Pogba hasn’t played for United since the 2-2 Champions League draw against Atalanta on November 2 after sustaining the injury during the previous international break.

The 28-year-old's long-term future at Old Trafford is uncertain with his contract due to expire at the end of the season. Nevertheless, Rangnick is likely to rely on Pogba between now and the end of the campaign as he looks to guide United to a top-four finish.

Paul Pogba is set to return from his three-month injury lay-off in Man United's Friday FA Cup tie with Middlesbrough... but Edinson Cavani, Eric Bailly, Alex Telles and Victor Lindelof will miss clash

* Manchester United host Middlesbrough in the FA Cup fourth round on Friday
* Ralf Rangnick confirmed Paul Pogba will feature in the squad and may start

* United will be missing a number of regular starters for the Old Trafford tie

Paul Pogba is set to return from his three-month injury lay-off when Manchester United play Middlesbrough in the FA Cup on Friday night and could even start the match.

The French midfielder has not featured for United since the Champions League draw against Atalanta on November 2 after suffering a thigh injury on international duty with France.

Pogba, 28, was initially rehabilitating in Dubai before returning to Manchester to rejoin training and United's interim manager Ralf Rangnick confirmed he is nearing a return.

'Paul will be part of the group. He might even be in the starting XI,' he said ahead of the Middlesbrough game. 'There are still a couple of players missing out.'

Manchester United are set to welcome Paul Pogba back after a three month injury absence. The midfielder's return will come as a boost for Ralf Rangnick with other players missing. Pogba pictured in United training on Wednesday as he closes in on a return

Pogba's contract expires in the summer and Rangnick has spoken previously about how the midfielder will wish to impress suitors Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus and Real Madrid between now and the end of the season.

He hasn't scored for United this season but has contributed seven assists in 13 appearances.

The returning Pogba should offer United a boost ahead of a crucial phase of the season.

As well as seeking progress in the FA Cup against Championship opposition on Friday night, Rangnick's side will be aiming to keep hold of fourth spot in the Premier League.

They leapfrogged West Ham into the final Champions League position thanks to Marcus Rashford's stoppage time winner last time out.

United also take on Atletico Madrid in the last-16 of the Champions League, with the first leg in Spain on February 23.

Rangnick confirmed that Jesse Lingard has been given a few days off 'to clear his mind' after failing to secure a loan move away on transfer deadline day despite offers from Newcastle and West Ham.

Striker Edinson Cavani also asked to delay his return from Uruguay where he played in World Cup qualifying wins over Paraguay and Venezuela.

Victor Lindelof has been ill, Eric Bailly returned from the Africa Cup of Nations with an ankle injury, and Luke Shaw will return at left-back because Alex Telles played 90 minutes of Brazil's World Cup qualifier against Paraguay on Wednesday.

'Paul will be part of the group he might even be in the starting XI,' said Rangnick. 'Edi Cavani will only return at the weekend. He contacted me to ask if he could have two more days at home. He won't be part of the group.

'Lindelof has been ill the whole week and hasn't trained. Same with Jesse, he asked to have a few days off to clear his mind. He will be back next week and part of the whole squad again.

'Eric Bailly came back yesterday and has a swollen ankle so won't be part of the squad. Luke will be playing because Alex Telles played 90 minutes for Brazil.'

Eric Bailly returns to training following a swollen ankle injury in boost to a Manchester United defence which has kept just two clean sheets this year

Manchester United's leaky defence has been bolstered by the return of Eric Bailly to training.

The Ivorian has not played for United this year having been away at the Africa Cup of Nations and also suffering an injury to his ankle.

His return is a welcome boost to Ralf Rangnick whose side has kept just two clean sheets this year and only West Ham have conceded more goals than them from any team in the top six.

Interim boss Rangnick said Bailly would not feature in Tuesday's game against Brighton having only returned to training on Monday.

Bailly has played in just four league games for United this season.

The club has kept just five clean sheets this season and of all the teams in the top six, only West Ham have conceded more.

As well as the Ivorian, Fred and Alex Telles are available once more having recovered from Covid-19.

A win at home to Brighton would see United overtake West Ham back into fourth place.
