Re: United All-Time Transfer List
24/09/2014 - ManUtd.com, A Marshall & C Thompson
Reds' spending spree Twenty-five years ago, Alex Ferguson embarked on an unprecedented spending spree to revitalise his Manchester United*squad and introduce five new English players into his side. Many an eyebrow was raised at the expenditure, even if the approximate £6.5million outlay*appears chickenfeed compared to today's prices, but it was a conscious effort to end a spell of four seasons without a trophy. It paid off as the Scot landed his first piece of silverware at the club in the following May with the quintet all starting against Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final and replay. Mike Phelan - Signed from Norwich City, 01/07/1989, £750,000. Norwich City's captain was out of contract at Carrow Road after rejecting fresh terms and was understood to be keen to return to his Lancashire roots. Before the Bosman Ruling, a sizeable fee would still be required with Everton pursuing rival interest as they sought to replace Peter Reid. Ferguson won the chase for his services with a tribunal fixing the fee and he was unveiled on the same day as Neil Webb. Neil Webb - Signed from Nottingham Forest, 01/07/1989, £1.5million. United had trailed the classy midfielder for some time but struggled to make contact with Brian Clough as the wily Forest boss was reluctant to entertain calls from Old Trafford. The 1,000th player to represent England became available when his deal expired but £1.5million was the final sum demanded by the tribunal. Forest chairman Maurice Roworth commented afterwards: "If United want to sell him back to us for £1.7million, we will buy him tomorrow." Gary Pallister - Signed from Middlesbrough, 30/08/1989, £2.3million. After losing out to Liverpool in the race to sign Swedish stopper Glenn Hysen, and failing to secure Martin Keown’s services from Everton, Ferguson made it his mission to land Middlesbrough’s highly-rated defender. The trouble was Boro were in no mood to sell and a 24-year-old Second Division player with only a season’s top-flight experience would become involved in the most expensive transfer between to British clubs. Bids of £1.8million and £2million were rebuffed before the Middlesbrough board finally sanctioned the sale. "In the end, I decided to get him no matter what the cost," conceded Ferguson. Pallister had submitted a written transfer request in an attempt to accelerate the negotiations and signed a six-year deal at United. Paul Ince - Signed from West Ham United, 13/09/1989, £800,000 + £5k per game. If you want a dictionary definition of a controversial transfer, then it is probably this one. Ince*wanted*the move and, in a misguided attempt to get the ball rolling, was pictured wearing a United shirt in a tabloid newspaper – which did not go down well with Ferguson or the West Ham fans. It was dramatically announced that the £2million+ move was off due to a medical showing up a pelvic problem. The England Under-21 international sought a second opinion and faced an anxious wait until a compromise was reached. A hire-purchase deal of £800,000 plus an extra £5,000 per game during his contract was agreed with the Hammers. "It has been the longest two weeks of my life and I'm relieved it’s all over," he said. Danny Wallace -*Signed from Southampton, 18/09/1989, £1.2million. With Trevor Steven opting to join Rangers, a wide midfielder was still on the manager’s hit-list and Wallace had slapped in a transfer request as four clubs jostled for his signature. Despite Arsenal and Tottenham showing interest, he talked over the move north with his wife and agreed a five-year contract, even with Spurs boss Terry Venables waiting in the wings to see if the move collapsed. |

Re: United All-Time Transfer List
23/09/2014 - ManUtd.com, Sean Mullan Spending spree: 1996 Inspired by Louis van Gaal's summer additions, we're looking back at other close-season spending sprees. After starting with the five captures in 1989 (above post), we cast our minds back to summer 1996 when the Reds once again signed five players. By then Alex Ferguson had become renowned for making minor adjustments to his squad with one or two signings during the off-season, but on this occasion, with the Reds having won a second league and cup double the season before, he bolstered his options across all areas of the pitch. Raimond van der Gouw - Signed from Vitesse Arnhem, 01/07/1996, £500,000 Ferguson was on the hunt for a reliable back-up to regular no.1 Peter Schmeichel and found his man in a 'pony-tailed Dutchman' recommended by a United scout. Arriving in a cut-price (cut ponytail) deal with his contract having expired, van der Gouw said on his arrival: "I have always wanted to play in England. To come to Old Trafford is a dream for me." Ferguson was similarly pleased with the deal, enthusing: "He is a really experienced player who will strengthen our squad in a vital area." Ronny Johnsen - Signed from Besiktas, 10/07/1996, £1.2million Johnsen had signed for Besiktas in summer 1995 and later that same year Ferguson made an enquiry into the defender's availability, after only half as season in Turkey. However, the player turned down the move initially, explaining later: "They wanted me to come over but I was doing very well at Besiktas. I never regretted saying no, and at the same time I had a good feeling that it was going to come later." He proved to be right, eventually sealing his move as Norway's then-most expensive defender. Karel Poborsky - Signed from Slavia Prague, 24/07/1996, £3.5million Poborsky was a key player in the Czech Republic side that caught the eye with their run to the final of Euro '96, scoring one of the goals of the tournament with a glorious lobbed finish against Portugal. Ferguson, however, was more taken by his performance against Italy, and one of football's finest ever defenders, during the group stages. "It was his display against Paolo Maldini that impressed me," said the Reds boss. "He gave him a really hard time." Jordi Cruyff - Signed from Barcelona, 26/07/1996, £1.4million Cruyff came through the youth ranks at Barça, making his senior debut under father and legendary Dutch forward Johan. He made a bright start, with nine goals in his first season, but fell out of favour once his dad was sacked. As a result, he made the switch to the Theatre of Dreams, saying just prior to his arrival: "United have always been regarded as one of Europe's biggest clubs and you would always expect them to be in the running for honours. I'm certainly interested in what they've got to offer." Ole Gunnar Solskjaer - Signed from Molde, 18/09/1989, £1.5million The then-prodigious young striker established himself as Norway's brightest young talent with 31 goals in only 38 games and had begun to attract interest from around Europe, with Cagliari and Hamburg both keen on securing his signature. Molde manager*Åge Hareide offered Solskjaer to Premier League pair Everton and Manchester City but neither were prepared to take the risk, and so Ferguson, who had missed out on signing Alan Shearer, made his move with a £1.5m swoop, which still ranks as one of the greatest bargains in United history. |
