United's England captains
28/08/2014 12:00 - ManUtd.com, Callum Thompson United's England captains Wayne Rooney has become Manchester United's fourth permanent England captain. The Reds striker has taken over the international honour from Steven Gerrard and will lead both club and country - the first player to perform that dual role since Bryan Robson. David Beckham and Rio Ferdinand are the other United men to have been installed as the Three Lions' skipper during their time at Old Trafford. A number of former Reds have captained the country with Ray Wilkins doing so on 10 occasions when Robson was sidelined. Paul Ince, Sir Bobby Charlton and, of course, Rooney himself have also had the responsibility when the permanent skipper was absent. * Phil Neville, Gary Neville and Michael Carrick have all worn the armband for England at some stage during a game. |

Re: United's England captains
06/09/2014 09:24 - ManUtd.com, Mark Froggatt Beckham hails Rooney as England captain David Beckham claims Wayne Rooney can be England's "inspiration" as captain and believes the Manchester United striker will flourish in his new role. Treble-winner Beckham earned 59 of his 115 caps as England skipper and notably wore the armband when a 17-year-old Rooney made his debut against Australia in 2003. During a visit to St George’s Park, England’s training base, the football icon heaped praise on his former team-mate. “He’s one of the most experienced players in the team now,” Beckham told the FA’s official website. “He’s now the most respected players in the team. "Young players will look up to Wayne for inspiration. He’s a player who wears his heart on his sleeve. People want to see that passion. You fight for every ball and celebrate every goal you score, or every goal you set up. “That’s what Wayne’s all about. Wayne’s such a great talent, such a great player, people love him, fans love him and it’s great to see him with the armband. It’s something I know he’ll cherish.” Expanding on the role of England captain, Becks continued: “At times [the England captaincy is] underestimated, but you really know how important it is when you’re part of the squad or you are England captain. “In our country it means more than anywhere else. To be a captain of the England team was the proudest moment in my career, and people really respect that, they really understand how important it is when you’re involved in and around the England team.” Rooney scored the only goal in Wednesday’s friendly win over Norway and will wear the armband next during Monday’s European Championship qualifying match in Switzerland.
