TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR LADIES 1 UNITED WOMEN 5

Manchester United Women extended their lead at the top of the FA Women's Championship to four points, defeating second-placed Tottenham Hotspur Ladies 5-1 at the Cheshunt Stadium.

Two first-half goals from Katie Zelem and a third from Mollie Green at the start of the second period set Casey Stoney's team on track, before late headers from Jess Sigsworth and Leah Galton made absolutely sure of the points.

The top-of-the-table clash started brightly, with both sides keen to get forward from the outset and Spurs demonstrating why they have been the Reds’ main challengers throughout the season.

It was United who opened the scoring though, with just three minutes on the clock. Zelem picked the ball up just outside the area and took aim with a long-range effort. Spurs goalkeeper Chloe Morgan couldn’t get to it as it looped over her and into the net on a blustery day in north London to send the travelling 'Barmy Army' - inevitably already in good voice prior to kick-off - wild behind the goal.

It was 2-0 soon after, Zelem again the scorer. Our no.10 converted emphatically from the penalty spot after a lively Leah Galton was fouled by Megan Wynne.

Karen Hills’ side pressed high as they looked to respond; Spurs' top scorer Rianna Dean charged down Siobhan Chamberlain to create a half-chance and Coral Haines’ fierce effort from distance flew just over.

The hosts did pull a goal back through captain Jenna Schillaci just before half-time. Galton, in her haste to get back to defend, gave away a free-kick on the right wing. Aided by the wind, Schillaci’s delivery into the box evaded everyone, including Chamberlain.

United were perhaps lucky to still be ahead at the break. Set pieces again caused problems for the Reds' rearguard and Spurs' Renee Hector found herself in space in the area. The centre-back was unable to connect well enough with Emma Beckett’s teasing delivery and couldn’t direct her effort on target to test Chamberlain.

Green made it 3-1 to United less than a minute after the restart, applying a first-time finish to Galton’s low cross from the left.

That goal seemed to halt any attacking momentum Spurs had gathered just before the interval and the second half was really then all about the Reds.

Lizzie Arnot, who came on for Charlie Devlin just after the hour mark, did brilliantly to skip past Ashley Neville on the right and deliver a pinpoint cross to Sigsworth who nodded in United’s fourth.

Galton rounded off the scoring, directing a powerful header in from Zelem’s free-kick.

This emphatic result means the Reds are four points clear at the top of the Championship; four matches remain, one of which is a game in hand over Spurs Ladies.

Stoney's side will now have more than a fortnight's break before returning to action with a home fixture against Aston Villa Ladies on Wednesday 17 April. Kick-off at Leigh Sports Village is scheduled for 19:00 BST and tickets are on sale from www.manutd.com/womenstickets.

Man United 7-0 Crystal Palace: Hosts seal Women's Championship in debut season as Lauren James scores four

* Manchester United sealed Championship title with 7-0 win over Crystal Palace
* Lauren James hit four as Lizzie Arnot, Leah Galton and Jess Sigsworth also struck
* In their first season as a team, the club have scored 88 goals in 18 games

Manchester United clinched the second-tier Women's Championship title with a 7-0 victory over Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Lauren James scored four goals while Lizzie Arnot, Leah Galton and Jess Sigsworth also netted.

In their debut season, United have netted 88 goals in 18 league matches and conceded just seven times - sealing the championship with two games remaining.

Manchester United won the Women's Championship with a 7-0 victory over Crystal Palace

It has been a record-breaking season for the club in their very first campaign together

United's promotion to the Women's Super League had already been clinched in the previous game.

However, it has to be ratified by the English Football Association, with the club expected to meet the licensing criteria.

The club initially axed their women's team in 2015, but applied for a place in the league in March 2018.

Led by former England captain Casey Stoney, the club recruited 21 new signings including England left-back Alex Greenwood and goalkeeper Siobhan Chamberlain.

Such has been the success of the venture - including a Women's League Cup group stage record crowd of 4,835 in their first game against Reading - that there are talks over holding games at Old Trafford next season.

Subject to ratification, the side will be playing in the Women's Super League next season

STONEY AND ARNOT PREVIEW UNITED WOMEN V MILLWALL

With promotion and the FA Women's Championship title sealed, Manchester United Women are looking to end a record-breaking campaign on a high.

On Sunday, Casey Stoney's side hit the road for our final away day of the season against Millwall Lionesses at Princes Park (kick-off 14:00 BST), with the aim of racking up another three points in a stellar season for the Reds. We will be hoping for a repeat of our 8-0 victory over the Lionesses at Leigh Sports Village in November, which included a hat-trick for Mollie Green.

Speaking to MUTV ahead of the game, the boss took time out to praise the players' efforts in a Championship campaign which has only seen United drop points in two games, but she was clear that the high standards must remain going into the final two fixtures of the season.

“It’s great to have won the league with two games to spare,” Casey said. “There was never any doubt in this group of players that we’d do it. It was just a case of when, really. They’ve worked really hard this season.

”There are two games for them to go and enjoy now, but it doesn’t mean we drop our standards. There are still six points available and we want to take them all. Our standards stay high, we’ve set them new challenges now over the next two games, in terms of what we want to achieve and they want to achieve it too. So it’s about that and we’ll be relentless in what we do moving forward.“

Sunday's hosts currently occupy last place in the division having managed just a solitary win to their name over the course of the season, coming against London Bees. Despite Millwall's position at the foot of the table, Chris Phillips' side will remain in the Women's Championship due to there being no relegation from the second tier of the women's game.

Lizzie Arnot, who was on the scoresheet in our title-clincher against Crystal Palace Ladies last week, is confident that the squad will not get complacent after the highs of last week as the former Hibernian winger reflected on her debut campaign in a United shirt.

“We’ve played Millwall before,” the 23-year-old said. “We know how they play and we’re just hoping that we can continue the form that we’ve had the last few games and get some goals as well.

”It’s been great,“ she added. ”It’s obviously been challenging in different ways, but that’s what I came here for – the challenge. I’ve enjoyed every minute and yeah, I’m just hoping to push on now.“

With Stoney's Reds already getting a taste of top-flight football this season with cup ties against Arsenal, West Ham, Everton, Brighton and Reading, Casey and Lizzie are confident the squad have what it takes when we make our top-flight bow next season.

“We've wanted to play WSL football and now we need to make sure we prepare for that,” Casey said. “We’re going to recruit and we’re going to make sure that the players are ready and they’ve shown that they’re capable already of competing with the sides in that division. Now we need to do consistently, so we will prepare the team to do that.”

Meanwhile, Arnot added:“We want to play in the WSL and challenge ourselves and that’s the main thing as a footballer. You want to play the best teams week in and week out and yeah, we cannot wait.”

MILLWALL LIONESSES 0 UNITED WOMEN 5

There was no let up by Manchester United Women at Millwall Lionesses, as the champions of the FA Women’s Championship won 5-0 in south-east London.

The penultimate match of the season brought a debut for Emily Ramsey in goal, though the 18-year-old was barely troubled by the hosts. At the other end of the pitch, Amy Turner, captain for the day, and Martha Harris netted their first goals for the club.

United soon got into the stride, Katie Zelem opening the scoring from the penalty spot after seven minutes. Leah Galton took on Lia Cataldo in the box, the latter lunging in and fouling our number 11. Zelem buried the spot kick to take her FAWC goal tally into double figures for the season.

It was 2-0 six minutes later when Turner nodded in from a typically precise Zelem corner, to get the United coaching staff and substitiutes on their feet in celebration. Her defensive partner Millie has already scored twice this season, including the opener against Aston Villa in the recent win that secured promotion.

Soon after, Lizzie Arnot’s clever work on the right created the opening for the third goal with 23 minutes played. The Scot waltzed past the home defence, pulling the ball back for former Millwall attacker Charlie Devlin to score against her old club.

Zelem was a constant threat in a comfortable first half, dictating play, stinging the palms of Lionesses goalkeeper Rhiannon Stewart and firing just over on a couple of occasions.

When referee Lauren Hott pointed to the spot after a foul on Harris in the area, again by Cataldo, Zelem handed the ball to our no.2. Harris stepped up and calmly slotted past Stewart, despite some mind games by the Millwall goalkeeper.

The second half followed the same pattern as the first in all but goals, with relentless United pressure and possession. Millie Turner had two opportunities within a minute of each other, heading over and then into the hands of Stewart, before a fierce shot from Zelem was blocked.

Jess Sigsworth and Mollie Green replaced Devlin and Toone respectively with half an hour to go, and Sigsworth netted her 16th league goal of the season from a corner.

All in all, it was a routine afternoon for the champions in London, ahead of the final match of the season and trophy presentation at Leigh Sports Village on Saturday 11 May.
