Ander Herrera and Phil Jones join Manchester United growing injury list after last gasp victory over Watford

* Manchester United defeated Watford 2-1 in the Premier League
* Ander Herrera was forced off the field with a hamstring injury in first half
* Phil Jones was replaced with a twisted ankle and is doubtful to face PSV
* Spain midfielder joins likes of Wayne Rooney, Anthony Martial, Marouane Fellaini and Michael Carrick on injury list

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is facing a fully blown injury crisis ahead of the Champions League clash against PSV Eindhoven.

Ander Herrera and Phil Jones both limped off during Saturday's win over Watford with respective hamstring and ankle injuries.

Van Gaal also revealed striker James Wilson sustained a knee injury in training on Friday, causing him to miss the trip to Vicarage Road.

Ander Herrera hold his head after going down injured in Manchester United's victory over Watford

The trio are now doubt for the clash against the Dutch club on Wednesday.

United were already without Wayne Rooney (illness), Anthony Martial (foot), Michael Carrick (ankle), Marouane Fellaini (calf), Antonio Valencia (ankle) and Luke Shaw (broken leg) for the Barclays Premier League clash.

Van Gaal is hopeful Rooney, who was given yesterday off to shake off the bug, will recover in time to face PSV.

Nevertheless, the United manager is facing a selection headache ahead of the midweek clash.

'We are in a lousy period because we have a lot injuries, particularly after the international break,'

'We have a big problem now. Jones and Herrera are not heavy injuries but they are unlikely to play on Wednesday.'

Phil Jones (floor) is also a doubt to face PSV Eindhoven after being taken off with an ankle injury

Herrera, who has started three consecutive games in October after forcing his way into Van Gaal's plans, had only just spoken of taking his opportunities ahead of congested schedule that sees United play 14 games in two months.

Speaking to Manchester Evening News, the 26-year-old said: 'I want to play as many games possible, but I prefer to think about the next game which is Watford away.

'We have a busy schedule approaching which is good for everyone.

'I remember I spoke to Ashley Young earlier in the season and he told me that in England, December and January is a crucial time.

'We want to fight for everything this season - the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup.

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney struggles in the frontline after taking kick from Leicester defender Robert Huth

* Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney was injured against Leicester
* The Red Devils skipper was caught by Robert Huth's boot in 1-1 draw
* Rooney's goal drought continues having scored just twice in the league

Wayne Rooney endured another tough day at the office, struggling to make an impact at the King Power Stadium before going off injured.

The England striker had the fewest touches of Manchester United’s outfield players and spent the final 22 minutes on the bench after sustaining a kick to his chest from Robert Huth.

Louis Van Gaal believes Rooney will be fit for the visit of West Ham United next Saturday, but will want improvement from the 30-year-old in any case.

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney grimaces after receiving a kick to the chest from Robert Huth

‘I don’t think he is injured for next match,’ said Van Gaal. ‘I wanted to change already one of the strikers, then he was limping, that’s why I chose him.

‘But I could have chosen Anthony Martial, both of them were not running in behind. When you have seen the game against Watford, Jesse Lingard was running in behind. You need players running in behind, they didn’t do that. That’s why I wanted to change one of the strikers, but then Rooney was injured.’

Restored to a role up front, the United captain provided little to threaten Leicester City’s defence. He tried an early potshot that was held by Kasper Schmeichel, but then miscued a presentable heading opportunity.]

Rooney lifts his shirt to inspect the damage caused by Huth's boot and was forced off with 22 minutes to play

In the second period he failed to connect to a diving header from four yards out after Bastian Schweinsteiger had brought a fine stop from Schmeichel. In the process Rooney, who was offside in any case, took a boot to the torso from Huth that left him with a visible mark when he came off.

Rooney’s struggles in front of goal were put into sharp relief by Jamie Vardy continuing his scoring streak to an 11th consecutive Premier league game. Vardy now has 14 Premier League goals for the season, a figure Rooney needs the past 15 months to reach.

Van Gaal said the Leicester striker benefitted from a ‘lack of concentration’ from his players at an attacking corner, having shown in pre-game teamtalks how effective Claudio Ranieri’s side are on the counter-attack. United switched to three-at-the-back to try nullify the threat of Vardy’s penetrative running.

‘That’s why I say we gave the goal away,’ said the United manager. ‘When you see the (physical) data against PSV, it is the highest of the season of Manchester United.

‘Then we cannot train Thursday, Friday, then the manager wants to deliver in another shape, I am proud of that match. When you dominate the game.

‘That’s the second time in one week because we had the feeling we could win, that is difficult to cope with.’

Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo sent for scans after dislocating left shoulder again in training

* Marcos Rojo missed a month after dislocating the same shoulder last year
* Manchester United await a call on whether he will require surgery this time
* The Argentinian defender suffered the injury in training on Wednesday
* Manchester United may seek a left back in the January transfer window

Manchester United are waiting to see if Marcos Rojo will need surgery after the Argentina defender dislocated his left shoulder again in training.

Rojo sustained the same injury in the Manchester derby 13 months ago and was sidelined for four weeks, but did not require an operation on that occasion.

The 25-year-old was immediately sent for scans on Wednesday after he suffered a recurrence at the club's Carrington base, and United's medical staff are analysing the results.

Marcos Rojo is awaiting news on whether he will have to undergo surgery after dislocating his left shoulder

It adds to Louis van Gaal's problems at left-back with England defender Luke Shaw already ruled out for the rest of the season after suffering an horrific broken leg against PSV Eindhoven in September.

The United boss could be tempted to go into the transfer market for another left-sided defender next month, although Daley Blind, Matteo Darmian, Ashley Young and Tyler Blackett can all play in that position.

Rojo has made 11 appearances for United this season, and started last in their 0-0 draw at home with PSV in the Champions League.

Marcos Rojo surgery 'a success' as Manchester United star rests up in hospital ... with tea, crackers and a ham sandwich

* Marcos Rojo has undergone successful surgery on dislocated shoulder
* Manchester United out of Champions League after defeat by Wolfsburg
* Chris Smalling and Matteo Darmian joined seven players on injury list

Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo is on the road to recovery after having successful surgery on the shoulder he dislocated during training earlier this month.

The Argentina international shared an Instagram picture from his hospital bed after the operation, accompanied by the caption: ‘My operation was a success. Thank you to my beautiful wife, always with me. Thank you everyone for your messages of love and support.’

Rojo's bedside table was littered with his first meal following the procedure, which included cheese and crackers and a ham sandwich with a choice of tea, water and orange juice to drink.

Rojo's wife Eugenia Lusardo also shared a picture of the pair taken from his hospital bed, with the caption: 'I love my eugelusardo... and slightly numb haha but good!'

The 25-year-old injured his left shoulder during a training session on December 3 - it was the same injury he sustained during the Manchester derby 13 months ago, which kept him sidelined for four months but did not require an operation.

The versatile defender will not return to Champions League football, however, after United were eliminated from the competition following a 3-2 defeat by Wolfsburg in their final Group B game on Tuesday - condemning them to the derided Europa League.

Rojo missed Tuesday's game along with six other first team players including captain Wayne Rooney - while Matteo Darmian and Chris Smalling also picked up strains during the match at the Volswagen Arena.

With Bastian Schweinsteiger also facing a possible three-match ban for an alleged elbow on Winston Reid in United's 0-0 draw versus West Ham last weekend, Louis van Gaal is facing a possible injury crisis as he attempts to quieten fans disgruntled by the team's recent results and low scoring performances.

Despite admitting that United had taken ‘a backward step’ after their Champions League exit, Van Gaal still insists that progress had been made during his time at the club.

Italy full-back Matteo Darmian is also expected to be ruled out for a few weeks after pulling his hamstring

He said: ‘At the moment I cannot defend myself because we are out of the Champions League. Everyone word that I say is the wrong word.

‘But when you see the facts we went further in the Capital One Cup, qualified for Champions League group, we have played all these matches, and are still in a very good position in the league.

‘The facts say we are better than last year. That’s my answer because I can only give facts.

INJURY UPDATE ON SMALLING, HERRERA & ROONEY

*Story updated at 12:30 GMT

Louis van Gaal has revealed Chris Smalling, Ander Herrera and Wayne Rooney have trained all week ahead of Manchester United's Barclays Premier League match against Norwich City, although it remains to seen whether the trio will feature at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Smalling has not featured since hobbling through the latter stages of the 3-2 defeat at Wolfsburg and Rooney has missed the last three outings with an ankle injury sustained in the 1-1 draw at Leicester City. Herrera has also watched the last five games from the stands while recovering from a hamstring problem.

In an interview with MUTV, van Gaal also confirmed Matteo Darmian and Jesse Lingard are both unavailable to face Norwich. Marcos Rojo, Luke Shaw and Antonio Valencia are all long-term absentees, while Bastian Schweinsteiger is still suspended as part of his three-match ban.

“There are more or less three players who are trained this week, for a full week, so that’s not bad,” the manager told MUTV at the Aon Training Complex. “The players who have trained this week are Rooney, Herrera, Smalling and Young is also coming back I think, but we have to wait and see.

"We have to decide if they can play or not because some players like Herrera have already been 'out of the office' for three or four weeks.”

On the fitness of Ashley Young, van Gaal continued: “In the last match he had a slight problem, he was feeling something and we cannot take the risk I think. We have investigated that this week. He shall train today [Friday], so we shall have to wait and see if he is available.

“Lingard is out of the question, and Darmian is out of the question."

Later, in his press conference, van Gaal admitted his captain may return to action: "Rooney has been out for more or less two weeks so it is possible that he will play but we have to wait and see," he said.

Van Gaal also discussed the recent progress of Nick Powell, who has returned to the first-team fold following a lengthy injury lay-off to make several cameo appearances.

“He was also injured for a long time so he’s now recovering and coming in the match rhythm, but now because of the many injuries he cuts his chances and you never know [if he will play against Norwich].”

Padahal Jones sejak jaman Ferguson lumayan, dan digadang-gadang The Next Duncan Edwards, tapi musim ini doi lebih sering cedera

Team news: One back, one out for United

Louis van Gaal has told MUTV that Phil Jones is out of Manchester United's Emirates FA Cup tie with Sheffield United but Jesse Lingard is ready to return to the side.

Jones was withdrawn at half-time of the win over Swansea City last time out with Matteo Darmian entering the fray and prompting a reshuffle at the back.

Ashley Young is in training after also being hurt against the Welsh side while Lingard is an option again after being out since the defeat at Bournemouth in December.

United defenders Luke Shaw, Antonio Valencia and Marcos Rojo remain on the sidelines after surgery, Adnan Januzaj is unlikely to play and another youngster definitely unavailable is Ben Pearson, who is cup-tied after representing Barnsley in the competition.

"Of course, we have the long-term injuries," said the manager. "Shaw, Valencia and Rojo. But Jones is also injured. Then we have to wait and see because I have a lot of players who are in the 'red zone' [in terms of fitness], overloaded, and that I decide later.

"Lingard is coming back from injury. He has trained a full week so he is ready. Young is not injured but he is overloaded and in the 'red zone'. More players are in the 'red zone' and we have to decide if they can play against Sheffield United or not."

In terms of the three long-term absentees, van Gaal was asked if they were making good progress in their recovery.

"I think so," he replied. "They are, all three, going very well. Shaw and Valencia also had a holiday break and they have come back very brightly and they have the spirit to continue so that's also very good. Rojo was here and shall also have a break at the end of January when it is possible for him. But it is going very well."
