Antonio Valencia set to miss start of season for Manchester United - so Jose Mourinho could bring Ashley Young back early from holiday

* Antonio Valencia suffered a calf injury against San Jose Earthquakes
* New signing Diogo Dalot is also injured and will miss the start of the season
* Jose Mourinho has suggested he will ask Ashley Young to deputise at right back
* Young played in the World Cup but has been asked to return early from holiday

Antonio Valencia will miss the start of the Premier League season after picking up a suspected torn calf muscle against San Jose Earthquakes.

With summer signing Diogo Dalot also recovering from injury, Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho revealed that Ashley Young has been asked to return early from holiday to deputise.

Young played five games for England as they reached the semi-final of the World Cup, although he sat out the third place play-off on June 14.

Antonio Valencia will miss start of the season after a calf injury against San Jose Earthquakes. Valencia was Man United's only fit senior right back, with new signing Diogo Dalot also injured

Mourinho said: 'Valencia is injured and he will be injured for the beginning of the Premier League. Diogo Dalot is also in the recovering phase, he will not be ready for the beginning of the Premier League.'

He added: 'Ashley Young is a possibility to play right back but he is on holiday. I don't know if he fancies to be back for that and put himself to be available for the team or stay on holiday.'

Mourinho also believes Victor Lindelof could fill in, although the Sweden centre-back is also on holiday after his country lost to England in the quarter-finals.

Jose Mourinho sees Ashley Young as an option at right back, although he is still on holiday

He said: 'Victor Lindelof is a possibility. He is not a right back but he's a possibility. He starts training next Monday and I will send people to Manchester to train with Victor. It makes no sense for him to come to the US.'

Another solution would be retaining the services of Matteo Darmian, although the full back has made it clear he wishes to leave for regular game time.

Mourinho admitted he would not stand in Darmian's way if an acceptable bid was made.

He said: 'Matteo wants to leave, and I think when a player wants to leave, if the right offer arrives you have to try to be human and let the player follow his instinct,' said Mourinho.

'But not at any price and until now the offers we got for Matteo are not even close to being accepted.

'So if Matteo leaves, he leaves because the right offer arrives and if he stays, yes you are right, he can be important for us.'

Jose Mourinho confirmed Matteo Darmian will be allowed to leave if the club's valuation is met

Jose Mourinho confirms Nemanja Matic will miss start of the Premier League season after undergoing surgery in Philadelphia

* Nemanja Matic is set to miss the beginning of the Premier League season
* Jose Mourinho confirmed the news after Manchester United's loss to Liverpool
* Antonio Valencia has already been sent home from US with a torn calf muscle

Nemanja Matic has undergone surgery in America and will miss the start of the season for Manchester United.

Manager Jose Mourinho revealed the news after his side were beaten 4-1 in Michigan in the fourth match of their US tour.

Mourinho did not specify what the problem is, but it’s known that Matic was sent for scans shortly after joining up with his teammates in Los Angeles last week.

Captain Antonio Valencia has already had to fly home from tour with a torn calf muscle, while new £19million signing Diogo Dalot will not be ready until September due to a knee injury.

United’s problems continued in Michigan as Chris Smalling withdrew after the warm-up, forcing Eric Bailly tro step in, and Luke Shaw was also unavailable.

‘Smalling? I've no idea,’ said Mourinho. ‘Shaw? I've no idea. Matic had a surgery. He came from the World Cup with an injury and the time he had to rest in the holiday was not enough to resolve the problem.

Jose Mourinho has confirmed Nemanja Matic will miss the start of the season through injury. The United boss did not specify the problem, but said the Serbian had undergone surgery

‘He went to Philadelphia for a top world specialist in relation to these kind of injuries, and he didn't leave the clinic. He had immediately surgery not to lose more time. So no Matic.’

Explaining Bailly’s decision to step in and replace Smalling, Mourinho added: ‘He's a team boy, a great boy, and an honest man; honest to put everything for the team.

‘That is why we still have him and why he is going to stay with us because football teams need people like him and (Ander) Herrera. These kind of players where the club is more important than anything else.’

JONES FORCED OFF AGAINST TOTTENHAM WITH AN INJURY

Jose Mourinho does not yet know the severity of the injury that forced Phil Jones to exit Manchester United’s Premier League defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on Monday night.

The England international made his first appearance of the season against Spurs and made an encouraging start, as part of a back three that also included Chris Smalling and the versatile Ander Herrera.

However, the evening ended in frustration for the former Blackburn Rovers defender when he picked up a suspected hamstring injury in the second half, leading to Victor Lindelof taking his place on 58 minutes.

Jones walked straight down the tunnel after being replaced and, speaking after the final whistle, the manager gave this update to Sky Sports:

“I don't know what Phil Jones has – maybe a hamstring but I did not speak yet to know what it is – but we have Smalling, Lindelof and Eric Bailly.”

United’s next match in the Premier League is against Burnley at Turf Moor on Sunday. It remains to be seen whether Jones will be fit.

Luke Shaw could return to action in Manchester United's games against Young Boys or Wolves after sustaining nasty head injury on England duty

* Luke Shaw hopes to be back in contention for Manchester United next week
* Shaw suffered a nasty head injury in England's defeat to Spain on Saturday
* The left-back has been at Carrington this week undergoing assessments
* He is understood to be targeting a return to action in next week's games
* United face Young Boys on Wednesday and Wolves on the Saturday

Luke Shaw hopes to be back in contention for Manchester United next week after suffering a nasty head injury while on England duty.

The left back received treatment for almost seven minutes on the Wembley pitch following a collision with Spain’s Dani Carvajal during Saturday’s Nations League defeat.

United said on their official website that suggestions Shaw is ‘obliged to serve a mandatory seven-day concussion period of absence’ were unconfirmed.

That could put Shaw in the frame for the weekend trip to Watford — the scene of his public rebuke by Jose Mourinho two years ago — although it is understood the left back is targeting next week for his comeback.

United travel to Bern for their opening Champions League group game with Young Boys on Wednesday.

Shaw has been at Carrington this week being assessed by United’s medical team, while summer signing Diogo Dalot has recovered from knee surgery.

Dalot played for the Under 23s last Friday and has trained for the past fortnight.

Marcos Rojo's injury woes continue as Manchester United defender hobbles off during U23s game on Friday night

* Marcos Rojo hobbled off in his comeback game for Manchester United's U23s
* The defender had not played since suffering an injury during the World Cup
* He lasted around 55 minutes against Reading before coming off at Old Trafford
* Diogo Dalot continued his recovery from a knee issue with another 90 minutes

Marcos Rojo suffered another injury setback on Friday night as he hobbled off during his comeback game for Manchester United's Under-23 side.

The defender had not played since suffering an injury during Argentina's World Cup round-of-16 defeat to France earlier this summer.

And despite efforts to step up his fitness ahead of a potential first-team return, Rojo had to be replaced by Regan Poole before the hour mark at Old Trafford.

A frustrated Rojo headed straight down the tunnel with a team medic after failing to complete 90 minutes for Ricky Sbragia's side in the Premier League 2 clash.

Despite Rojo's anger, there was at least some positive news on the injury front as summer signing Diogo Dalot made his second appearance for the reserve team at right back.

The 19-year-old also played against Stoke two weeks ago as he looks to step up his recovery from a knee problem.

Mourinho and his United squad were spotted at Stockport train station on Friday as they headed south on the eve of their Premier League clash with Watford.

The Portuguese boss eased the pressure on himself with a 2-0 victory over Burnley before the international break and he will be desperate to pick up all three points against the Hornets, who have made a perfect start to the new season.

And ahead of Saturday's clash at Vicarage Road, the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez, Marcus Rashford and Fred were pictured arriving at United's Carrington base for a training session before going to Stockport.

Nemanja Matic could return for Manchester United in Carabao Cup clash against Derby as he reveals abdominal surgery was 'the only way to fix the problem'

* Nemanja Matic is targeting a return against Derby in the Carabao Cup
* Matic missed Manchester United's draw with Wolves through injury on Saturday
* The Serbian international has been routinely plagued by an abdominal problem
* Matic told Inside United surgery was the only option to fix the troubling problem

Nemanja Matic is targeting a return in Manchester United's Carabao Cup against Derby on Tuesday, as he finally looks to put his injury problems behind him.

Matic missed United's 1-1 draw with Wolves on Saturday as he continues to suffer with abdominal issues that stem back to last season.

He underwent surgery over the summer, and with the midfielder set for his latest comeback, Matic has revealed that the procedure was the only way to fix the problem long-term.

'I'd had this injury for a few months and, when I went to America, in the first training session, I didn't feel well and I asked the doctor to see what he could do,' Matic told official club magazine Inside United.

'I had the operation in Philadelphia as, after the scan, the doctor recommended surgery as the only way to fix the problem. I feel good now.

'I could see I couldn't give my best because this injury was serious. It was painful so I needed to fix it. Sometimes, you can play through the pain and I played the last few months of the season with the pain but I think, for this season, it was better to fix the problem.

'I didn't want to spend time during the season fixing it as I need to be ready for the season that we have.'

A £40million signing from Chelsea in 2017, Matic has quickly become a key cog in Jose Mourinho's Manchester United team.

He made 36 league appearances for the club as they finished second last season, before featuring for Serbia on a further three occasions for his native Serbia at the World Cup.

After Derby on Tuesday, United face West Ham in the Premier League over the weekend as part of a gruelling schedule of four games in 12 days.

Luke Shaw doubtful for England duty after suffering knock in Manchester United's dramatic win over Newcastle

* England may be without Luke Shaw against Croatia and Spain in Nations League
* Left-back suffered minor injury in Manchester United's victory over Newcastle
* Shaw revealed strong words were said at half-time as side mounted comeback

Luke Shaw is a doubt for England’s games against Croatia and Spain in the Nations League after picking up an injury in Manchester United’s win over Newcastle.

The United left-back will be assessed when Gareth Southgate’s squad meets up on Monday to prepare for the first match in Croatia on Friday before England face Spain in Seville three days later.

The injury could leave the Three Lions boss with a defensive crisis, following news that Danny Rose was also a doubt with a groin injury.

Shaw played a full 90 minutes with the unspecified injury as United came from behind to beat Newcastle 3-2, and afterwards revealed that Jose Mourinho and his players were involved in a frank half-time exchange in the dressing-room.

Luke Shaw may miss England's Nations League double header with an unspecified injury. Shaw praised the impact of the supporters in helping the team mount an unlikely comeback

‘A lot of strong words were said in the changing-room at half-time and everything that was said was correct and needed,’ said Shaw.

‘I’m sure there were a lot of happy people around the world watching that and loving every single moment of it, but the team spirit is very strong here. The half-time team talk was very strong but it gave us a kick up a backside.

‘To be 2-0 down at home to Newcastle is really bad and it (the talk) helped us. We came out different with the changes and everything. The way we played in the second half was much quicker, much more direct, more like the United you saw in the old days and we need to do that more.

‘There is no reason why we shouldn’t be like that with the quality that we have. I’ve said many times after games that we have so much quality but we are not utilising that.

‘But as soon as we kicked off (for the second half) something inside of me felt it was meant to be – we were meant to come back and win.

‘The fans were amazing, especially in the second half and that really pushed us on. It was a massive factor. Especially with the bad results recently, they have been really good to us so you could say this was payback.

‘We should be winning these games, but obviously we keep everyone on the edge of their seats.

‘It is a good day for us, a good win that was much needed before the international break. I think it is most important for us to remember that second half, to keep it within our group to remember what we did.

‘We need to do that every single game from the start to the final whistle. If we keep that momentum, that hunger and that passion we should be winning more games comfortably.

‘We’re very happy. Now we go off to our national teams and different people have rests.’

Nemanja Matic doubtful for Chelsea return after Manchester United midfielder withdraws from Serbia's Nations League squad with injury

* Nemanja Matic has pulled out of Serbia duty with an unspecified injury
* The midfielder misses Nations League clashes with Montenegro and Romania
* He may also miss Manchester United's trip to Chelsea after international break

Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic may miss out on a return to Chelsea next month after withdrawing from Serbia duty because of an unspecified injury.

United confirmed Matic had returned to the club 'to complete his rehabilitation', ruling him out of the Nations League fixtures in Montenegro and Romania this week.

He could also be sidelined for United's crunch Stamford Bridge clash when they return to action after the international break.

Manchester United's Nemanja Matic has withdrawn from Serbia duty because of injury

Matic made more than 150 appearances for Chelsea across two spells before linking up once again with former Blues boss Jose Mourinho last year.

Serbia, meanwhile, must do without two of their most experienced players, with captain Aleksandar Kolarov also ruled out because of injury.

Goalkeeper Marko Dmitrovic said on the Serbian Football Association's website: 'Sure we'll miss them. They are our two captains and the best players, but in this team we have a lot of quality players who are ready to replace them in their absence.

'Ehoever runs on the field in Podgorica, I am sure that on the individual and collective plan, we will do our best to achieve good results.'

The news of Matic arriving back at United early comes a day after full-back Luke Shaw pulled out of the England squad for their double header against Croatia and Spain.

Romelu Lukaku in race to be fit for derby after Manchester United hit by Alexis Sanchez injury blow

* Lukaku missed the wins over Juve and Bournemouth due hamstring injury
* The striker has returned to light training ahead of Sunday's derby at the Etihad
* Sanchez sustained a thigh strain during the Champions League victory in Turin

Romelu Lukaku has returned to light training as he races to be fit for the Manchester derby at the Etihad on Sunday.

However, United have a fresh injury concern after Alexis Sanchez sustained a thigh strain in the stunning Champions League win over Juventus in Turin.

Lukaku picked up hamstring injury a week ago and missed the wins over Juve and Bournemouth. United’s £75million striker had already paid the price for scoring just four goals in 14 appearances this season after he was dropped to the bench by Jose Mourinho for the win over Everton.

Romelu Lukaku has returned to light training ahead of the Manchester derby on Sunday

But Mourinho wants Lukaku’s power against Manchester City in this weekend’s Etihad derby and will wait to see if the big Belgian can prove his fitness over the next 24 hours. He will give an update on the striker’s progress on Friday lunchtime.

Mourinho admitted before the 2-1 win over Juve that he didn’t know if Lukaku would recover in time, but it’s understood the 25-year-old was able to take part in a light workout at Carrington while his teammates were on Champions League duty.

Sanchez has led the line in Lukaku’s absence but may also be a doubt for the derby after suffering a dead leg in Italy.

The Chilean was seen applying ice to his thigh after coming off in the 79th minute and was in some discomfort afterwards.

At least Anthony Martial continues to progress following a turbulent summer that saw him fall out with Mourinho and refuse to sign a new contract.

The forward. 22, is now set to agree a new five-year deal to coincide with his upturn in form, and was recalled to the France squad on Thursday to face Holland and Uruguay this month.
