Leicester City 1-1 Manchester United: five things we learned

Jamie Vardy's self-confidence pays dividends, United continue to stagnate under Van Gaal, and why 1992 isn't such a poisonous milestone in football's history

Jamie Vardy justified those golden boots

Pre-emptive whispers of a £30m January price tag still raise an eyebrow, but there was something of the inevitable about Jamie Vardy's Premier League record-breaking goal shortly before the half-hour at the King Power Stadium. The gold boots he chose for the occasion were a bold move, given football's penchant for schadenfreude, but confidence is clearly part of the Vardy's arsenal.

Aside from the history boy, this was a textbook Leicester City goal. Kasper Schmeichel claimed the ball in the home side's area and immediately launched the ball out - in that distinctly Schmeichel-esque way - to Christian Fuchs on the break. The left-back, suddenly finding himself as an ad-hoc right-winger, then had to find the run of the marauding Vardy. So he did, with an inch-perfect ball in behind the retreating United backline.

14 seconds after the ball had sat in Schmeichel's gloves, Vardy's finish was typically emphatic. Leicester's counter-attacks are so no-nonsense that nothing other than a rifled finish beyond David de Gea was appropriate. Vardy's golden boots had done the business - he may be worth a punt for the more official version in May.

Leicester don't have a defence to match their thrilling forwards

While the all-action Vardy and Mahrez have caught the eye at one end, the 21 goals Leicester have conceded at the other does not bode well for any readjusted season's ambitions. You'd have to go down to 15th in the table - and the Premier League's other surprise package of Chelsea - to find the next most porous defence.

Manchester United's equaliser was as avoidable as it was damning for Leicester. Juan Mata's corner was swung into the perfect area and - with Schmeichel rooted to his line and Shinji Okazaki providing the sort of marking job you'd expect from a striker - Bastian Schweinsteiger's job was alarmingly straightforward from six yards out.

Leicester's you'll-score-two-we'll-score-three approach has served Claudio Ranieri well - and won his side plenty of neutral admirers - but their approaching run of formidable fixtures will tell if it's a sustainable strategy, let alone the remaining 24 games of the Premier League season.

Louis van Gaal had learned his Leicester lesson...

After last season's chaotic capitulation at the King Power had plunged United into "crisis mode", Louis van Gaal did at least have an inkling of what to expect from Leicester's thrilling front-line.

United set themselves up in a 3-5-2 formation - not unfamiliar to Van Gaal's squad - and certainly weren't prepared to commit the same numbers forward as in their 5-3 hammering in this fixture last time. Aside from the buccaneering counter-attack for Vardy's goal, Riyad Mahrez's direct approach certainly gave them concerns - Ashley Young, Daley Blind and Wayne Rooney all had to resort to blocking his path illegally.

Otherwise - for better or worse, given their dour recent showings - United gave Ranieri's men little green space in which to stretch their pacey legs. Van Gaal's ubiquitous clipboard ensured there wasn't to be a repeat of last season's horror show.

...but United fans' patience isn't limitless

While United remained mindful of Leicester's threat, some of their fans would have been forgiven for wondering why any United side should have to be mindful of Leicester's threat. Once the early storm had been weathered, and Schweinsteiger had restored parity, Van Gaal's side enjoyed the lion's share of possession - 69%, in fact - but could do little to worry Leicester's less-than-rock-solid rearguard.

Wayne Rooney represents United in microcosm - shorn of his previous verve, short of ideas and relying on a fading reputation for thrilling moments. If Van Gaal's remit was to steady the Old Trafford ship after David Moyes had run it aground, then that job is complete. Where she sails now is unclear.

1992 is an acceptable footballing milestone

The purists might not like it - indeed, they'll make sarcastic remarks about it whenever they can - but Premier League records are more than just a convenient benchmark for Richard Scudamore and the Sky Sports brand. or Richard Scudamore and the Sky Sports brand.

However, the milestone of 1992 means rather more than simply a cynical rebrand. The breakaway of 22 clubs to form the Premier League was a seismic event for the sport, compounded in Europe by the creation of the game-changing Champions League and, globally, the quite literally game-changing backpass law.

The exploits of Jimmy Dunne and Stan Mortensen - whose 11-game run was long considered the "post-war" record to rather less consternation - haven't been erased from history. But the dramatic advances in football that coincided with the start of the 1990s should be borne in mind.

Sky Sports' 1992 boast of a "whole new ball game" has turned out to be truer than many would like to admit.
